Song for this chapter: Unity by Alan Walker ft the Walkers. Video in the media.
Elyon's POV
It's been a week since resumption. A week since I resumed this school and so far, I'm loving it even more. Mateo has been my go-to guy, always there whenever I have difficulty in anything.
Skye and Jamal settled their fight, probably at home anyway because the day after the fight at the cafeteria, they came back to school like themselves again, an obviously inseparable twins.
Though, I noticed that Jamal came to school earlier than he did on Monday but Mateo filled me in on his therapy days. He would also have at least a cup of coffee with him every morning before we go to school, but I didn't question that, telling myself constantly that it wasn't any of my business.
The table was now tension-free, well apart from Somadina and Vanessa's constant bickering as well as Jamal taking his drug right in front of me and not caring that Skye would constantly shoot warning daggers at him. Mateo would also notice this and they to get my attention away from the pair, which I was grateful for.
Classes have started and at the moment, we art students were having literature class. Actually we've been having the class for about forty to forty five minutes now and it's been nothing short of fun. The young female teacher, Miss Amure was really engaging.
"I'm so grateful that all of you passed last session's exam. Did any of you repeat?" She asked.
"No ma'am. We are too good to repeat. That question is meant for the science class. Does guys are a pack of numskulls." One guy from the back said and everyone laughed, including me. It's was Tejiri that spoke, popularly known as T. J.
"Tejiri, that's not a very nice thing to say, especially coming from you. It's not like you were not promoted on probation yourself." A girl right behind me, Esosa deadpanned.
"Yeah!!!" Everyone in the class hollered, as T. J looked down in mock shame.
"At least I got promoted sha." He shrugged nonchalantly.
"It's okay, it's alright. It's like you people have not grown past your childish banters." As soon as she said that, the bell went off indicating that her period was over.
"Okay, you people have succeeded in wasting my time. From next week, we'll start reading our Literature text, Faceless. Everyone should bring their own copy. Have a nice day." Miss Amure said and left the class. Immediately, the class was thrown into disarray. I looked at Mateo who was arranging his books in his locker.
"Hey, are we going to Music class?" I asked him. He looked at me and nodded.
"Yes. Apparently, it's just four of people that are offering music, the rest are going to be on free period. So, we'll be going to the music studio." Mateo explained and I nodded, getting my music note, my purse and my phone from my locker.
"Who are the others?" I asked him.
"That would be me and her." Esosa's voice came from behind me and I looked at the other person she was pointing at. It was Semilore, the rather quiet girl from the back of the class who just waved at me. I looked at Mateo.
"So, you are the only guy?" I asked him and his lips turned in that mischievous smirk I've gotten familiar with.
"What can I say, the ladies can't resist me." He gloated and I scoffed while Esosa rolled her eyes.
"Abi you are the one that can't resist us? Semi and I joined way before you even thought of joining. So don't flatter yourself." Esosa said with a bit of sass.
"Busted." Semilore stuck her tongue out to Mateo who in turn rolled his eyes.
"You must always spoil my paro in front of fine girls." He grumbled and I laughed.
"Oya let's go before the teacher punishes us for late coming," I said and we went out of the class.

We got to a building that was separate from the senior block. It was pained white and blue. I've gotten accustomed to the way the school was. Every lab or studio were not merged to the school building but was different on their own. It was like entering another building being divided into different labs and studios. I noticed that last week when I went to the visual art studio.
When I officially spoke to Jamal. I smiled as I reminisced the encounter again.
"We are here," Mateo announced as he opened the door and I came into a very large room.
Forget, this school gets doper and doper by the day.
The room wasn't like any music studio I've seen. It wasn't your typical high school music studio, it was way better. There were about sixteen benches and on the benches were several musical instruments, ranging from violin, flute, clarinet, saxophone (all kinds), trumpet, trombone and tuba. At the end of the room was a door that led to only God knows where. Semilore went ahead to carry a violin and started playing an unfamiliar song but it sounded beautiful.
"I don't know why you'll call this school boring because this is super dope!" I marveled, looking around.
"You haven't seen the best part, yet. Come on." Mateo nudged me, took my hand and led to the door spotted earlier and I followed behind him.
We entered the room and my eyes went huge. Now this was just mind-blowing. It was a recording studio. Like an high classed, eye quality recording studio. It had everything. A very good computer, a digital audio workstation, a solid audio interface, a studio microphone and headphones.
"How do y'all keep blowing my mind like this. This is amazing!" I looked at Mateo who had his eyes on me the whole time, a smile playing on his lips. I suddenly felt self conscious by the way he was looking at me. "What?" I asked him, feeling suddenly shy.
"You light up so beautiful when you are excited. Maybe I should keep bursting your brain more often." He stated with teasing evident in his voice and I laughed.
"Please do. I'm not complaining." I replied, looking at the sound system. The door inside the studio opened.
"Mateo, I..." I looked up at the sound of the very familiar voice that has been giving me goosebumps all week. He stopped his words half way and was staring at me too.
Jamal.

Jamal's POV
I was inside the studio when I heard voices from the other room, where the orchestra used to practice. I continued strumming on my guitar because I knew it was the students offering music that had come for their class. Apparently, the music teacher wasn't around and had left the key for me.
I heard a very familiar voice and stopped playing. The voice that has been on my mind for more than a week now. I tried to listen intently but It was hazy. I sat back down and sighed.
I'm hearing things now. I'm finally running mad.
I hissed as my mood switched immediately. I rummaged my bag for my drug and bottle water and went into the toilet. Looking at myself in the mirror, I threw two tablets in my mouth and downed the bottle of water in one go.
I looked at myself in the mirror again, noticing the eye bags and fatigue written all over my face. Because of the constant nightmares, I've resulted to staying up all night, leading to insomnia. At weekends, mum would give me sleeping tablets that would make me sleep for twelve hours, but on school nights, she couldn't doze me so that I won't miss school. So I resulted in drinking coffee every morning.
I heard voices from the studio, mostly Mateo's. It was reasonable that he was in the studio, since he was the one that operated most of the equipments there. I rinsed my face with water from the faucet and used my face towel to dab the water off it as I opened the door.
"Mateo, I..." I removed the towel face and my words got caught in my throat. I wasn't hallucinating after all. I heard her voice. She was here...and she was staring at me.
Gosh, can she stop looking at me like that?
"Jamal, hi." She spoke first and I was grateful because I suddenly became tongue-tied.
"Hi..." I practically crocked out and cringed at how I sounded like a frog was stuck in my throat.
"Guy, Awfa. Where is Uncle Tega?" Mateo's voice cut through whatever bubble was about to form and I looked at him, getting my act together.
"He's not around, but he gave me the key. That's why I'm in here." I replied. Elyon's gaze was on my hand and I followed her gaze to see that she was looking at my drug. I quickly shoved it into my bag and saw how fast she looked away when she noticed she was caught staring.
"How come he gave you the key? You are not even offering Music." Mateo's slightly annoyed voice pierced my thoughts again. I looked at him and sigh. Mateo was the closest thing to a best friend to me, which made me know some nasty characters he had that people might not see. One of which was blowing little things out of proportion, like now.
"I don't know why. Probably because I use the studio more than y'all do. But here..." I took the key of the studio and tossed it to him, which he caught easily. "You can have the key. I should probably excuse you guys." I made to sling my bag over my shoulder.
"You don't have to." Elyon's voice stopped me and I looked at her. Mateo was also frowning at her.
"We are supposed to be having a class right now," Mateo said.
"Yes, but the teacher isn't here and technical students are having free period as well. So let's just have fun." Elyon smiled at me and automatically my lips stretched in a small smile.
"Whatever," Mateo mumbled and began to set up the sound system. I looked at Elyon again and saw that she was taking Mateo some questions about the sound system.
These two are getting pretty close. I frowned as I decided to push the thought to the back of my mind. I dropped my bag and sat down, picking my guitar again.
"Elyon, I want to test something. Can you go into the booth?" Mateo asked. I looked up.
"Okay, but what should I do?" She asked.
"Sing." Mateo and Elyon looked at me and that was when I realized I was the one spoke. I looked down and looked up again, there eyes still on me. "Ignore what I said." I looked away
"I don't mind singing." She shrugged with a smile.
"That settles it then." Mateo smiled and Elyon entered the booth. I watched her every move
Watched how she placed the head phones on and moved closer to the microphone. I moved closer to where Mateo was as he began to press some buttons.
"It's been a while, so forgive me if I sound a bit rusty." She giggled.
"Don't worry. I'm sure you'll sound amazing." Mateo winked at her and I unconsciously rolled my eyes. Always trying to charm the ladies. "Sing Unity by Alan Walker." He added and she nodded. I just sat back down and watched her, carefully.
Elyon cleared her throat and exhaled into the microphone. Mateo pressed a button and increased the volume on the audio mixer. The intro of the song started and Mateo gave her a signal to start.
In the dark of night
Damn! That was my first thought immediately her voice came out. It sounded like melted chocolate and I felt myself getting transfixed. I sat up.
The stars light up the sky
We see them flying free
That's just like you and me
As soon as she sang that line, she looked right at me and immediately I had goosebumps all over and my mouth became dry. Mateo was too busy with making sound magic, he didn't notice whatever chemistry bubble Elyon and I were building.
Everyone is lonely sometimes
But I would walk a thousand miles
To see your eyes
She stared at me through her lashes and I gulped, feeling the breath being knocked right out of me. Was she doing this intentionally? It felt so serene. So divine.
You are not alone, we are family
Hold me, let's escape all this reality
You are my symphony
By your side, we are Unity
You are my energy
My guiding light, we are Unity
We are Unity
We are Unity
Is she singing this song for me? It feels like it's for me.
"Wow! Now you are the one bursting my brain." Mateo voice tore through the little bubble and Elyon looked away from me to smile at him.
I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding and watched as she came out of the booth and Mateo enveloped her in a hug. She didn't expect it as her expression became a surprised one. I, on the other, was still awestruck from the intensity her song brought to me.
"Jamal." Mateo's voice jerked me away from my reverie and I looked up. "How was it? Did you like it?" He asked me. I looked at Elyon who had her eyes on me, biting against her lower lips and I gulped.
Nope, I can't stay here.
"It was good. I need to go." I rambled, grabbed my bag, and rushed out of the room.
"What's his problem?" I heard Mateo say. I saw Esosa and Semilore and they waved at me. I waved back and rushed out of room totally, breathing in the fresh air from outside. Just like a brick, the move I made in there hit me and I cringed when I realized what I just did.
Dick move, Jamal. Dick move. I grimaced.
