Chapter 34

Say no to Suicide.

___________________________________

Third Person POV

Chaos.

Everywhere was Chaotic.

Trying to get rid of the mass of students seemed futile because everyone stayed rooted to the ground.

Where are the prefects when you need them?

Or the teachers even.

Everyone was surprised. Someone as cool and collected as Mateo Seyifunmi Craig had slit his wrist and stabbed his side, trying to kill himself right inside the Male lavatory. No one had seen that coming a mile away.

Absolutely no one.

Just when you think you know someone, they tend to surprise you.

No one really knew him. They only thought they did.

"Fuck!" Jamal was on his knees, his shirt off from his body and pressed against Mateo's bleeding side to stop the bleeding. Soon, the shirt was already soiled with blood.

Vanessa had gone to alert the teachers and Somadina was trying to get rid of the crowd. Elyon was holding Skye, turning her face away from the horrid sight. Soon, the sound of sirens blaring was heard signaling the coming of an ambulance and it became louder as the ambulance got closer.

Vanessa came, leading Mr Kohol who in turn was leading a team of paramedics with a Gurney. Soon a train of teachers came and tried to get rid of the students. This was more effective as students didn't want to get into trouble. They began to disperse, the event of the past minute at the tips of their tongue.

"Move aside!" Mr Kohol yelled Jamal as he led a team of paramedics carrying a gurney towards Mateo's pale body.

Jamal stood up from the ground, shirt and hand soiled with blood and blood stains his white singlet vest. He looked to his eyes and his eyes met Elyon's. She saw the horror lying beneath his brown orbs and became extra terrified. Skye still had her face buried in Elyon's shoulder, weeping profusely.

Mateo's body was lifted from the floor to the gurney and the paramedics carried him away to the ambulance waiting downstairs. Mr Kohol turned around, looking tired and exhausted.

"You three," he pointed to Jamal, Skye and Elyon. "You are coming along with me to the hospital." He ordered before looking and Soma and Vanessa.

"Make sure you get someone to clean this place up. You can do it yourselves. This news must not leave the senior's block. Am I clear?!" He snapped.

"Yes sir!" They chorused and left the place, after telling the trio that they would help get their bags home.

"I can't go, I can't go." Skye kept chanting, tears cascading from her eyes. Elyon looked at Jamal for help and Jamal in turn looked at his sister.

"We have to, Skye. Don't think about anything else. We need to be there for Mateo." Jamal told her, trying to convince her.

"Are you coming or I should leave you!" Mr Kohol asked furiously.

"I'd go ahead and try to stall him. You try to convince her to come with. Mateo needs her there." Elyon stated and went ahead, leaving Jamal and Skye.

"Hey, look at me." Jamal cupped her face in his hands and turned her head to look at him. Blood marks smeared on her clear skin but no one gives a shit at the moment.

"I know what you are thinking and I understand why you feel that way. But you need to pull yourself together because Mateo needs us. Please Skye." Jamal pleaded. Skye nodded and Jamal pulled her along.

They got to Mr Kohol's car and soon they were on the way to the hospital.

****

They got to the hospital just in time to see the paramedics pull Mateo out with the gurney towards the entrance of the hospital. They rushed out of the car, following the nurse and doctor who hand taken over the gurney and were pushing it towards the theatre. They made to go further but a nurse stopped them.

"I'm sorry, you can't go further than this." She explained to them and Jamal groaned in frustration.

"The three of you should go take a seat. I need to call his father and inform him." Mr Kohol said and moved away from the three of them, phone in his hands.

Jamal didn't take a seat. He resulted to pacing the length and breath of the hall way. Elyon had settled to leaning against the wall. Skye plopped down on one of the chairs, looking exhausted and disheveled. She had cried so much, her eyes were swollen and blood shot. Burying her head in her hands, she began to breath loudly, like she was hyperventilating. Elyon noticed this and looked at Skye.

"Skye?" She called but Skye didn't answer, her breathing becoming more erratic. An alarm went off in Elyon's head. "Skye! Jamal, come quick." She screamed, rushing over to Skye. Jamal stopped his pacing abruptly and rushed to where is girlfriend was trying to calm his sister.

"Skye, hey!" Elyon quickly moved away from the way and Jamal took a kneeling position in front of Skye. "Look at me, Skye. Calm down and look at me." He cooed softly but that didn't stop her erratic breathing.

"Get a nurse, fast!" He told Elyon who took off. He turned to focus on his sister who had tears cascading from her eyes as she kept breathing heavily. He cupped her face in his hands, forcing her to look at him.

"Skye..." He called to her.

"I caused it. I caused it." She kept chanting but Jamal shook his head.

"You didn't cause anything. I need you to breath with me, okay? Breath with me." He said softly and she nodded, her eyes becoming droopy, showing that she was losing consciousness. Jamal cursed.

Where the fuck is Elyon and the nurses?! He thought then turned to his sister.

"Hey, stay with me." He patted her cheeks gently, trying to get her to stay awake but Skye was giving into unconsciousness.

On cue, Elyon and a train of nurses started making it down the hall way with a gurney and a can of oxygen. As soon as they got to the spot, Jamal lifted an unconscious Skye to the gurney. A nurse placed an oxygen mask on her nose and they began to wheel her away, Jamal and Elyon following behind. They got to an empty ward and took her in, the nurse stopping Jamal and Elyon from going any further in.

"You need to wait outside." She told them and Jamal looked at her like she has gone bananas.

"I should wait outside? My twin sister is unconscious and I should fucking wait outside! You must be tripping!" He snapped, scaring the young nurse who was obviously shorter than him.

"Jamal, you need to calm down." Elyon clasped him blood stained hands in hers but he jerked away forcefully, the force making Elyon to almost trip.

"Don't tell me to calm down!" He snapped at her and walked away towards the toilet. Elyon sighed, watching him as he entered the toilet and slammed the door behind him.

Jamal's POV

I leaned against the basin with my hands, my back crunched over as I tried to catch my breath. The room that reeked of antiseptic didn't help matters. I raised my head to take a look at my self in the mirror and saw how weak I looked, how drained I looked. The blood of my best friend was still on my hands and some marks were on my face.

Sighing and pulling off my singlet vest at the same time, I turned on the faucet and squirted liquid soap on my hands. I began to rinse the blood off, my mind in turmoil. I was still trying to wrap my head around the events of the past hour but it seemed impossible, very impossible.

My best friend slit his own wrist and stabbed his side.

My sister is unconscious because she thinks, somehow, she had caused this.

I just yelled at the love of my life because I couldn't get my shit together.

Everything seemed so unreal, something I have never thought of happening, especially to Mateo.

The events of the past hour has made me question the level of friendship I had with Mateo. How come I didn't see through his facade. How can I be best friends with someone for more than ten years and still know nothing about him while he knew absolutely everything about me?.

"Jamal..." A knock on the door and Elyon's voice snapped me out of my train of thoughts. A knock came again."Are you in there?" She asked again.

"Yes." Was my simple reply. The knob turned as she opened the door, making her way in. She came in completely and bolted the door, preventing anyone from coming in. I couldn't bring myself to look at her after the stunt I pulled but I saw everything through the mirror.

"Are you okay?" She asked me, standing at arms length with her hand folded across her chest. I didn't respond, my head hung down. I heard her sigh before I felt her hand wrap around my bare middle. I sighed, suddenly feeling lightheaded.

That familiar magic touch.

"I'm sorry." I muttered but she only hummed in response, hands still wrapped around me.

I sucked in a breath when I felt her lips press against my bare back. Goosebumps suddenly appeared on my skin, my heart began to thump loudly. She didn't seem to be fazed at my reaction to her touch. She kept pressing dainty kisses and butterfly kisses to my back. My hand gripped the edge of the basin as I fought back a groan that was about to escape from my lips.

She was trying to make me forget for a little while, like always.

"I've never felt so useless in my life." I told her, her soft breathing fanning the skin of my back as we didn't change our position.

"My best friend was battling with shit and I had no fücking idea until it got to this stage." I continued. "Not just that, My sister is unconscious and I decided to snap at you."

"I'm not angry with you, Jamal." She finally responded, her hands still wrapped around my middle. I sighed, standing up right and turned around to face her. She had a ghost of a smile on her face.

"What I did wasn't cool. I snapped at you and pushed you..." I told her and she scoffed out a laugh, interrupting me.

"And I'm not complaining." She stated, her hands not leaving it's place around my waist. She looked at me in the eyes, unwavering.

"Considering the situation we are in at the moment, whatever reaction you give, I'll take it. I understand what you are going through, at least a fraction of it and your lash outs are justified. I just need you to understand that none of what is happening is your fault." She stated but I disagreed, shaking my head.

"I should have known something was up with Mateo. I should have at least seen something, anything. He was doing therapy. He was fine! What went wrong." I asked frantically.

"Hey, chill. Look at me." Elyon brought her dainty fingers to my face. "Mateo is complicated. He has BPD, a very complex disorder which makes it difficult to read him even if you tried." She explained.

"He should have spoken up." I chocked, tears welling up in my throat.

"It's not that easy. Unlike you, you had your family stand by you through out your traumatic experience but we can't say about Mateo because we don't know. You said yourself, he and his mum are not close. Uncle Taju is trying but he can't be everywhere at the same time-

Mateo needs more than just therapy, he needs love and he found that in Skye even though he didn't know. Everything that has happened in the past month leading to this point has just been a bunch of unfortunate events, none of which is any body's fault, especially not yours." She stated matter-of-factly, her gaze not wavering from mine. I found my lips spread up in a smile.

"I like it when you talk like this." I stated and she chuckled.

"You had better. I'm trying to make you feel better." She said. I cocked my head playfully to the side.

"Well, there is one more thing that can make me feel better." I whispered, my hands coming to wrap around her waist, pulling her closer. She giggled, her palm still cradling my face.

"Oh yeah? What's that?" She wiggled her eyebrows goofily and I laughed.

"How about I show you, hmm." I told her, leaning in and letting my nose graze hers gently before pressing my lips against hers.

This kiss was slow, like we were memorizing what it felt like again. Elyon's fingers caressed the back of my neck as she patted her lips, giving me the go ahead to taste her. Pulling her bottom lip between my lips, my tongue sensually explored hers, passionately. My hand wrapped tightly around her waist, pulling her body against mine.

I love Elyon.

She brought out the best in me. She made me happy.

And I didn't want to loose that happiness.

Not for any reason...

And definitely not for anyone.

She tugged against my lips as she pulled away slightly, pressed her forehead against mine and nuzzled her nose with mine. I pulled her impossibly closer, flushing her body against mine. We tried to catch our breath. Tongue tied, I moved my hand to cup her face.

"I love you." I muttered, not sure of what else to say. I looked into her eyes, saw a fleck of surprise but it was gone as quickly as it had appeared. A small smile spread across her face.

"You can tell me how much you love me when we are not standing in a toilet." She teased and I couldn't help but laugh. I wasn't going to rush her to say it back. I just needed her to know.

"Where is my son!" The familiar voice yelled interrupted us. Elyon and I exchanged a looked before we dashed out.

****

Uncle Taju had come in frantic and disorientated. His eyes were blood shot and his breathing was erratic. He was shouting at a nurse who in turn was trying to calm him down when Elyon and I came out the lavatory. I tried to calm him down the best way I could but man was a mess.

A big mess.

It wasn't easy knowing your son was fighting for his life, barely hanging by a thread.

The doctor came out of the theatre and gave us some not so great. Mateo's wrist had been stitched and bandaged but the stab at his side wasn't coming off easy. Apparently, the sharp object he had used to stab himself had cut deep into his system, damaging a blood vessel. He needed blood and he needed one fast.

Unfortunately, uncle Taju was no match.

"What's his blood group?" Elyon asked the doctor.

"After the test, we found out that he's a B- and you his father is a AB which isn't compatible." The doctor said, his voice going a notch lower.

"Use me then. I'm O." I said. Elyon looked at me like I had gone crazy.

"What?!" She exclaimed.

"Jamal, you don't have to. You have done enough by being here. I won't put you through this. If anything happens to you, your parents will never forgive me." Uncle Taju pleaded. I placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Uncle Taju, nothing will happen to me. Mateo is my best friend. This is what I can do for him at this point. I'll be fine." I assured him then went to Elyon placing a dainty kiss on her forehead. "I'll be okay. Stay here with Uncle Taju." With that, I left with the doctor.

****

After giving blood, I was pretty weak and was placed on bed rest. The hospital called my parents and mum nearly shouted the whole place down. But dad succeeded in calming out down and now they were with me, along with Elyon and uncle Taju which was after they made sure Skye was okay.

"I can't believe you kept all these from us these past hours. You could have called immediately Skye passed out!" Mum was still pretty upset I didn't put a call to them since.

"I didn't want you to worry." I told them weakly.

"We are your parents for a reason. You should tell us these things. We are supposed to be worried." Dad reasoned.

"I'm sorry." I apologized. Dad sighed and faced a very quiet Uncle Taju before standing up and motioning for both of them to talk outside. Elyon held to my hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. From the corner of my eyes, I saw mum smile at the gesture.

****

Skye woke up a day after but she was placed on bed rest. Exam was around the corner and we had this much problems piled up as well. Mateo had not gained consciousness but the operation was successful and he was already in his private ward. Elyon's parents had to stop her from coming to the hospital so she could focus on her exam which was well understandable. She still kept in touch anyway.

I nodded my head in greeting as I walked past the nurses on duty, making my way to Skye's ward with a nylon bag in my hand. I knocked on the already opened door when I got there, popping my head in with a smile playing on my lips.

"Hey you." I called, walking in. Skye was sitting up against the bed, her books piled up by her side, studying. She looked up at the sound of my voice.

"Hey back." She smiled slightly.

"How are you feeling?" I asked her, settling beside her on the bed.

"Sick of this place actually. But I have to be here." She said the last part quietly but I heard anyway.

"You want to be here when he wakes up." I stated and she nodded slowly.

"I feel I owe it to him, after what I did. It's my fault that he is here." She said quietly.

"It's no body's fault that he is here, especially not yours. Mateo had a lot of demons he was battling with and he barely let anyone in. This is not your fault." I told her matter-of-factly, like I've been trying to do.

"Then why do I feel like shit?!" She chocked. "He needed me and I gave up on him. Just like that. I could have saved him." She began to cry. I pulled her close to me and hugged her.

"No one has the power to save a fellow man, Skye. Except God. So let's had everything over to him." I cooed softly and she nodded.

After she calmed down I tried to make her eat. Uncle Taju came in with food packs as well for us after which he sat with us, engaging us in a conversation. He has been trying to keep himself busy, trying not to think that is son is in Coma.

On cue, a nurse ran into the room.

"Mr Taju Craig?" He called and Uncle Taju stood up immediately.

"Yes?"

"He's awake.

A/N

I'm sad.

Hearing the new of Chadwick Boseman's death on Saturday was not a good thing at all. I cried. It's still very painful. Man was a hero! It has been tough coming to terms with the fact that I'd watch a Marvel movie and not see the great Black Panther. I've decided to pay tribute to him by watching all his movies this week. I believe he's in better place now.

Rest on King.🙅🏾🙅🏾

Okay... I feel this chapter is a bit rushed and that's because I'm sleepy and at the same time I really wanted to publish this chapter. I apologize in case of any grammatical or typo error.

So Mateo is finally awake. Let's hope and pray he stays awake.

This book is coming to an end gradually.

Do you think this is the end?

Let me know your speculations in the comment box. Also, more details about Mateo's back story would be revealed in the next chapter. Let's see how it goes.

BTW; I still have three more papers to go and my defense. Wish me luck and pray for me.

See you whenever.
