"I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THIS, 'LENA." Violet muttered nervously.
She and Elena sat with their backs against the wall of the basement, waiting for Elijah to wake.
It had been about 10 minutes since Elena pulled out the dagger and about 5 since said doppelgänger woke up Violet. The blonde was not happy to say the least. After waking up in the middle of the night because of that dream and then not being able to fall back asleep for hours, Violet was in no mood to get up and deal with more Original drama.
"You wanted to find out why you can't die right? Elijah is your best chance to find that out." Elena persuaded. Violet sighed in defeat. Her friend was right. At the moment, Elijah is the only one who could give her the answers she needed.
The room fell silent as the two stared at the currently desiccated Original. Suddenly, Elijah's body began to move, his back arching violently as his muscles cracked.
The two girl hurried over, kneeling beside him and attempting to calm him down. "Elijah. Elijah, shh, it's okay."
The Original looked up at the brunette with wide, disbelieving eyes. "Katerina."
Looking at her once more, Elijah's body fell limp as he seemed to go unconscious for a few seconds before his body lurched once again. He stood up, gasping for breath as his bones popped. "I can't-I can't breathe!"
Elijah stumbled to the ground, holding himself up at the last minute. "What's happened to me?"
Violet moved out of the way quickly as Elijah sped to the door only to be blocked by an invisible barrier. The girls go to help him, holding him up as best as they can. "I can't-I can't be in this house."
Realization dawned on Violet. "You haven't been invited in." Elijah looked up at the girls. "You need to get me out of here." Before either of them could move, the vampire sped out of the house, the girls following quickly after.
When they finally reached him, he was crouched down on the ground in the doorway of the entrance. He stood to lunge at the girls but was once again stopped by a barrier. Breathing heavily, Elijah glared up at them. "What happened?"
Violet and Elena shushed him, pointing up and then to their ears. "We'll tell you. Not here." Elena spoke quietly. "Can I trust you?"
"Can I trust you?" Elijah whispered back with an icy tone.
Taking a deep breath, Elena held out the dagger that was previously buried in his heart. Hesitantly, Elijah took the dagger in his hand, giving the teenage girls a weary look.
━
Elena drove her car to the Lockwood mansion, Elijah in the passenger seat, draining a blood bag, and Violet in the back, tapping her foot nervously.
"You look better." Elena commented once they were parked outside of the large house.
"Where did you get the dagger?" Elijah asked, ignoring her previous statement. "I'll tell you everything. But we have to work together, Elijah. I need your word."
The Original kept his demeanor calm but Violet could sense him beginning to get agitated. "Your ability to make demands has long passed."
"No demands. Me and Violet are offering you our help. And in return we want yours." The nobleman glanced at the blonde girl. "And why should I even consider this?"
"The same reason you haven't killed me. You need my help to kill Klaus. And I need you." She replied.
Suddenly, the brunettes phone begin to vibrate, the screen reading Stefan at the top. "Where are you? Are you okay? Is Violet with you?" Stefan spoke, not letting Elena say a simple greeting.
"Yes I'm fine." She answered with a sigh. "Where's Elijah?"
"Elijah and Violet are both right here." Elena told him. "Where? I'm on my way."
"No, Stefan. Elijah, Violet and I need some time alone." Elijah propped his elbow on the door, listening to the phone call with interest.
"Listen to me, he'll use you to get to Klaus."
Violet snapped her fingers, getting Elena's attention. 'Put him on speaker' the blonde mouthed. Elena complied and held the phone in between them. "Elijah is a noble man, Stefan. He lives by a code of honor. We can trust him." She paused and took a breath. "He knows that we would be incredibly stupid to betray him again. By removing the dagger, Elena and I have proven ourselves."
"You can't do this alone." Stefan replied after a moment.
Elena took over once more. "This is my decision, Stefan. Please respect it. And, make sure Damon doesn't do anything stupid. I'll be in touch." And then she quickly pressed the small red button on the screen, ending the call.
━
"He's here." Elena told Elijah with a shaky voice.
The mans eyebrows furrowed in concern. "Klaus is here?" The two girls nodded. "He's taken over Alaric's body."
"Of course he has." Elijah said, irritated. "One of his favorite tricks."
"Well what are his other tricks? What is going to do next?" Elena asked. "You're the only one who knows him." Violet added.
"Yes, I do."
━
The three now stood in front of the Lockwood Mansion, Elijah lifting his hand to ring the doorbell. Seconds later, a dressed up Carol Lockwood answered the door.
"Elijah! Elena, Violet, what are you doing here? What happened?" The woman asked as she looked at Elijah's torn up and burned suit in confusion.
"I've had a bit of an incident, Carol. I'm hoping you could help." He said.
Carol began to shake her head. "Well I'm on my way to a meeting so I-"
"It won't take but a minute of your time." Elijah compelled. Carol smiled brightly. "Of course. Anything you need."
"Thank you." Elijah spoke as the three of them entered the house. "Well, first things first. I'm going to need a change of clothing."
Carol closed the front door. "Well we can try one of my husbands suits, I haven't boxed them up yet." She said quietly. "Wonderful."
As the mayor walked up the stairs, Elena and Violet looked at Elijah, confused. "How did you know she's not on vervain?" Violet whispered.
"Cause I'm the one who got her off it." He replied. "Right before you and your friends killed me. Twice."
"If it's an consolation, I had nothing to do with either of those plans. They don't really like to tell me all of their plans." Violet spoke, giving a pointed look to Elena. The brunette only shrugged, making Violet roll her eyes.
Looking at the girls exchange in amusement, Elijah began to walk away. If you'll excuse me, I'll be down in a moment."
Elijah, looking as good as ever with a new suit and hair fixed up, sat with Elena and Violet after the mayor had left for her meeting.
"So I assume that the Martin witches are no longer with us?" Elena looked down guiltily. "No, I'm sorry."
"And Katerina, she would've been released from my compulsion when I died." Elijah said. Violet sighed. "Klaus took her. We think she may be dead."
The Original smirked. "I doubt that. Not Klaus' style. Death would be too easy for her after what she did."
"I don't understand," Elena began. "You say you want Klaus dead, but you still make Katherine pay for betraying him." Realizing that was her friend was saying was true, Violet looked at Elijah as well, curious for an answer.
"I have my own reasons for wanting Katerina to pay. There was a time, I would've done anything for Klaus."
Elijah began to explain when Katherine and Klaus first met, how it was Klaus' birthday and the most surprising thing of all: Klaus and Elijah were brothers.
"Yes, Klaus is my brother." Violet and Elena's jaws dropped. "We heard that. Still processing." Elena said as her and Violet tried to grasp the idea of the two men being sibling.
"I'm a little behind on the times but I believe the term you're searching for is 'OMG'."
━
"There's a whole family of Originals?" Elena asked in disbelief.
"My father was a wealthy land owner in a village in Eastern Europe. Our mother bore seven children." Elijah told them as he fixed the collar of his suit in the mirror.
Elena stood. "So, your parents were human?"
"Our whole family was. Our origin as vampires is a very long story, Elena." He paused. "Just know, we're the oldest vampires in the world. We are the Original Family and from us, all vampires were created."
"Right, but Klaus is your brother." Elena said. Yes, Elena, he just said that. Violet thought as she rolled her eyes. The blonde really just wanted to figure out what Elijah knew about her, as selfish as it sounded.
"And you want him dead?"
"I need some air." Elijah suddenly said. "I'm still feeling a tad...dead. Come."
The Original led the girls out to the many acres of land the Lockwoods own.
"So as you've seen, nothing can kill an Original. Not sun, not fire, not even a werewolf bite. Only the wood from one tree; a tree my family made sure burned." Elijah explained.
"That's where the white ash from the dagger comes from." Elena stated in realization. "Yes."
"The witches wouldn't allow anything truly immortal to walk the earth. Every creature needs to have a weakness to maintain balance."
Violet looked up at Elijah. "So if the sun cant kill an Original, why is Klaus so adamant on breaking the sun and the moon curse?"
Elijah smirked. "The curse of the sun and the moon. It's all so...biblical-sounding, do you think?" He asked them, looking amused.
"What's so funny?"
He then began to tell about the time when him and Klaus were reminiscing about Klaus' 'aztec drawings'.
"I don't understand. So, Klaus drew the Aztec sketches about the curse?" Elena questioned.
"Roman scrolls, African tribal etchings, and any other culture or continent we felt like planting in it."
The brunette shook her head softly, still confused. "But why?"
Elijah leaned on one of his feet. "Easiest way to discover the existence of a doppelgänger or to get your hands on some long lost moon stone, was to have every single member of a warring species looking out for it."
"So, it's not Aztec at all?" Violet asked.
"The curse of the sun and the moon," Elijah said looking down to both of the girls. "...is fake. It doesn't exist."
"What?" Violet and Elena ran after him, both completely confused.
"Klaus and I faked the sun and the moon curse, dating back over a thousand years." He explained.
"But if there's no curse-"
"There's a curse. Just not that one." He told her. "The real ones much worse. It a curse placed on Klaus."
Elena sighed. "What are you talking about?"
"Klaus has been trying to break it for the last thousand years and you were his only hope."
Violet was growing more impatient by the minute. More than anything, she wanted to know why she couldn't die and why for some reason Klaus was after her. She wanted the answers she's been deprived of ever since that night that Elijah came to Elena's house.
"Ok, I don't mean to be rude or selfish," Violet said catching the other twos attention. She sighed. "Could you please explain to me why I can't die? And why Klaus seems to interested in me?"
Elena and Elijah stared sympathetically at the smaller girl. Neither of them could imagine what she had been going through. To have death reach out and take you in its arms only to wake up alive and well. Then to have a psychotic Original vampire show interest in you and have to live with the fear that he would do something to you. Elena knew what Klaus wanted with her. She knew why Klaus wanted her dead but Violet had no idea why Klaus insisted on taunting her.
Elijah sighed through his nose. "Violet, what I'm about to tell you, is something not you, nor anyone else will ever be prepared for. Do you understand that?"
Violet nodded rapidly. "I just need to know why." She told him quietly.
The Original looked up at the sky and then back to her. "You and Klaus were bound by the witches to be together. When our mother made us vampires, her and the other witches in the village created what you would call soulmates. Humans would be pared randomly to a immortal creature. They're very rare and only happen every few centuries but they do occur and unfortunately, you were pared with Klaus."
Violet'a breath hitched and she heard Elena gasp. "Klaus and I...are s-soulmates?" Violet whispered, her heart beginning to hammer against her chest.
Elijah nodded and then continued to explain. "When soulmates are pared, the two get visions of each other in the form of dreams. Visions of what would be in the future when they would meet and fall in love. You've had dreams of someone unfamiliar, correct?" Violet stiffly nodded.
"I had one last night, actually." Elijah raised his eyebrows and gestured for her to continue. "It was of me and who I'm guessing is Klaus. He painted a picture of me, and it looked amazing. I kept calling him Nik." She paused. "We looked really in love."
The Original looked at her and nodded understandingly. "His full name is Niklaus. Our younger siblings, Rebekah and Kol call him by the same nickname." He explained.
"Niklaus, he would always draw pictures of a girl. He said that he would see her in his dreams, and she would treat him with such kindness and love like no one else has. That girl was you." His brown eyes stared into Violet's hazel ones, feeling sympathy when he saw the genuine fear in them.
"He has been waiting for you for a thousand years, and although now you may think it's impossible, you will fall in love with him one day."
Violet's vision began blur, tears welling up, not from sadness but from this overwhelming news that one day, she would be in love with the worlds most psychotic Original vampire.
"So what's gonna happen to me? What is he going to do?" She whimpered.
"I can assure, as sadistic and frightening Klaus can be, he would never dream of hurting you. You're his soulmate, the person he was meant to be with. Niklaus would never let himself or anyone lay a hand on you." Elijah reassured her. And it may have helped her worry less for her safety, but it didn't get rid of the fear she had for the man that was her soulmate.
The three of them were silent for several seconds. Elijah was allowing them to take in the information, especially Violet who he could tell was overwhelmed.
"Wait," Elena broke the silence. "So, why can't Violet die? She died with vampire blood in her system, yet she woke up perfectly fine and still human."
Elijah sighed heavily. "The witch that first had brought up the idea of pairing soulmates together, believed that neither of the two should go without at least meeting the other. So the human soulmate would not die until they met the immortal soulmate and vice versa."
"So, all I have to do is meet Klaus in person for me to be able to die?" Violet questioned.
Elijah nodded. "Precisely."
Another silence fell upon them until the sound of a vibrating phone pulled everyone from their thoughts.
Elijah pulled Elena's phone from his suit, looking annoyed. "Your phone will not stop its incessant buzzing. Answer it, please."
Elena answered her phone with a sigh. "Stefan- what's wrong?" A look of dread came onto her face. "No. No, no, no, no. Ok, I'll be right there."
The brunette quickly hung up. "Klaus went after Jenna. I have to go to her"
"I'm afraid that wasn't part of today's arrangement." Elijah told her with a glare. "She's my family, Elijah! I have to."
Worrying that Elijah would say no, Violet quickly spoke up. "I'll stay here while Elena goes. So that you know she'll come back."
"I'll be back." Elena reassured him. "You have my word."
"That doesn't mean anything to me until you live up to it."
Elena gave him a grateful look. "Thank you." She whispered before running off towards the house.
Once the doppelgänger was out of earshot, Violet turned to face Elijah again. "So what's the real reason I can't die?"
The man raised an eyebrow. "And what makes you think I was being untruthful before?"
"If there's anything I've learned these past few months, is that witches love to make things more complicated than they need to be. Only having to meet Klaus would be too easy. That can't be the truth."
Elijah gave her an amused smirked. "What a smart girl you are." His usual stoic expression was back as he looked down to her. "Because humans could only be paired with immortal beings, their lives are tied together. The only way for you to die, is for Klaus to die."
Violet didn't say anything. She couldn't say anything. How is she supposed to react when told that along with the demise of the man trying to kill her best friend, will be hers as well.
"How will I die?" She asked quietly. When Elijah didn't respond, she repeated her question. "How will I die? When you kill Klaus, how will I die?"
Elijah let out a defeated sigh and began to walk again, gesturing for Violet to follow. "When the immortal soulmate dies, the connection the two soulmates share is severed. After they die, the first time the human soulmate falls asleep, they die from the same wounds their soulmate had. Let's say Klaus' heart is ripped out; the first time you fall asleep, a hole will start to form in your chest and your heart would stop beating." Violet swallowed thickly, the image of her laying in bed as a hole the size of a fist begins to open in her chest stuck in her mind.
"Were you ever going to tell anyone? You knew what was gonna happen when you finally get to kill Klaus. Would you ever have said anything?" She asked, her voice cracking a bit.
Elijah looked at her with a slight guilty expression. "At first I wasn't. Surely, knowing that you would die, your friends would not have gone through with the plan. But, Violet," The Original looked her in the eyes, showing her that everything he was saying was genuine. "You are a smart, sweet girl and you do not deserve what will come to you because the witches decided to paired you with my brother. If you wish to tell your friends what will happen, then you may do so."
Violet looked up at the sky, trying to blink away the tears that were welling up. With a shaky sigh, she shook her head. "No. Like you said, if they know that I'll die, they'll back out of the plan. But backing out means that Elena will die and I could never forgive myself for that. I'd rather die knowing that my best friend is safe than live knowing that if I had just sacrificed myself, she would still be alive and well."
━
After Elena had come back and Elijah explained Klaus' curse, the doppelgänger drive the three back to the Salvatore house.
Violet, needing some time to think to herself, quietly walked up the stairs and to the room she had been staying in while Elijah and Elena went to find Stefan and Damon. Changing into some comfortable clothes, Violet tucked herself into the bed, staring at the wall for what seemed like hours before someone knocked on her door.
"Come in." She said quietly, though whoever it was seemed to hear her as the door creaked open and revealed Stefan.
"Hey." He greeted. The blonde girl sat up in her bed, motioning for the vampire to enter. "What do you need?"
Stefan sat at the edge of the bed. "I just wanted to see how you were doing. Elena told us about Klaus. How you are apparently soulmates. That's a lot to take in, so I wanted to come check up on you. How are you doing?" He asked softly.
Violet wiped the smeared makeup from under her eyes and sighed. "I'm okay. I promise."
The green-eyed vampire gave her a look. "Violet, you can talk to me. I know that there's a lot going on right now but, if you need to talk you have me. You have me, you have Damon, and Elena and Caroline and everyone else. I promise that you can talk to any of use when there's something on your mind."
Violet chuckled as tears began to well in her eyes and she wasn't able to stop them from falling freely. Stefan was quick to pull her into his embrace, rubbing her shoulder comfortingly as she sobbed into his chest.
"Why does this have to happen to me, Stefan?" She whimpered out. The vampire shushed her and pulled her closer. "I promise Violet, nothing is going to happen to you. Nothing is going to happen to anyone. Klaus is going to die, and you're going to be okay."
But Violet could only sob harder, because he didn't know how wrong he was.
