01 - the odds are never in our favor

(TW: talks about attempted suicide!)

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

Klaus Mikaelson wakes up from his deep slumber thinking he was still in his bed, just to realize he was sitting up and could also feel the lights from behind his closed eyelids but he remembered closing his curtains last night.

He stretch's his arm out to the right seeing if he could feel the dead body of last nights dinner but he didn't instead he found a chair?

Klaus finally snaps his eyes open to take in an entirety new setting then his bed room.

A theater, a very grand theater filled with thousands of red seats, gold detailing in the walls, all in all it looked expensive and very grand.

He looked around to find his siblings on chairs to except they where all still unconscious?Asleep? He didn't know and when he tried to get up he also realized that he couldn't and he was stuck to the chair. He spent a while trying to get out of the chair before a voice stopped him.

"Would you please stop trying to get out of your chair? Do you not realize that you're stuck?" The random voice said, which confused the Mikaelson man greatly.

"Who are you?" He questioned with a slight raid of his eyebrows as he finally stopped squirming around trying to get out a chair that he obviously could not.

"My name is Ginger." The voice said, the person being a ginger headed woman, dressed in a pink gown that made it seem like she was going to a ball with a ridiculous tiny pink hat on her head, her entire eyelid and around her eye was covered in pink and white eyeshadow and a crazy looking wedge eyeliner, with massive fake eyelashes with gems on them.

"We should wake your siblings before I tell you all what in the world you're doing here." Ginger said with a hum, and her pointer finger on her chin before she quickly smiles and snaps her fingers immediately waking the others up.

"What in the bloody hell?!" Rebekah questioned confused before she's sees her older brother,"Nik what did you do? What witch did you piss off this time?" She immediately questioned him with a frown on her face and an annoyed tone in her voice.

"This time I didn't do anything." Klaus denied with an equally annoyed tone.

She then quickly turns to her other brother, "Kol what witch did you piss off?!?" She immediately questioned him.

"I didn't piss off anyone! How about you ask him!!" Kol quickly denied while pointing to Klaus before he start arguing with his sister. "Do you have memorie lost you wanker!?! I already asked nik!!" She immediately started arguing back with him, the two now going back and forth.

"Children please." Elijah said slightly annoyed while trying to break the two up before quickly giving up and settling into his seat and looking at Ginger with a uninterested look on his face:

"Alright, settle down will you all." Ginger said with a slight forced smile and the Mikaelson's unexpectedly actually shut up.

"Now it's time for you to ask the question." Ginger excitedly says with a large smile now on her face.

Kol puts his hand in the air slowly,"Who dressed you?" He asked while looking at the pink gown and Ginger's smile faltered a bit before becoming large again.

"No you silly boy. Anyone else?" She asked while looking around at the others.

"What are we doing here?" Klaus asked the question most of them wanted to know- well besides of course Kol, who is still wondering who did ginger so dirty that they put her in that dress.

"Finally! You all have been selected to watch the future of one of your soulmates." Ginger finally answered after a bit, very excited.

"Who?" Rebekah immediately questioned, her face going serious as she sits up in her seat straighter.

After all the women wanted someone to love and with her brother daggering her every time she finds love , there is no way in hell he could keep soulmates apart.

"Him." Ginger lets out a small breath before she simply pointed to Klaus.

"Him!" Rebekah shouted out raged.

"Him?" Kol asked genuinely confused.

Elijah however just wanted to know where the book he was reading was.

"Yup, now I'd really liked to start so let me wake the last few people before we begin and no more questions." Ginger said before snapping her fingers and 4 gasp fill the theater.

Everyone looking back to see,Hayley Marshall, Freya Mikaelson, Davina Clair, and Marcel Gerard.

"Marcel?" Rebekah questioned, stunned.

"Who is she?" Kol asked pointing to Freya with a confused face, "Your older sister." Ginger simply replied as if it wasn't shockingly new news.

"Our what?!?" The Mikaelson immediately questioned, they too are stunned.

"Kol, if you want to sit by Davina, please do." Ginger excitedly said, with a large smile on her face like always.

"Why would I want to do that?" Kol questioned confused, confused being the only thing he seems to be feeling right now.

Davina also seems to wanna know as she looks intrigued.

"Let's just say, you're each other's future." Ginger reply's while smiling gently, Kol's eyes widened finally somewhat understanding what the woman was attempting to say as did Davina's.

After a little bit of thinking, seemingly lost for words, the young witch decides to slowly stand up from her seat and make her way next to Kol awkwardly.

She gives Kol a gently smile as her cheeks redden, he gives her a shocked but small smile back. While that happens Ginger also explains the Elijah should do the same with Hayley which brought more shocking news.

Marcel decides to make his way next to Rebekah who is still looking at him in shock.

Klaus however is staring ahead of him still in shock, he, Klaus Mikaelson, the devil himself is gonna have a soulmate. How is that possible?

"Okay! Now that, that has happened, I'm gonna say again, you're all here to watch the early life of Klaus soulmate!" Ginger said happily,"Isn't that just exciting?!" The hyper woman asked with a large grin.

Everyone still in shock, confused and with so many other emotions just nod their heads and Ginger gives them one last smile before proofing away and the lights go down and the large theater room goes dark.

The large, dark screen starts becoming lighter, lets the games begin.

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

Hope. Hope is something that people hold onto when they're in a bad place in life. Hope is something that helps people get to the end when they believe. Hope is something that everyone should hold onto.

Sometimes you have to let hope go and realize that not everything in the world is all sunshine and rainbows, and at some point come to the realization that even if you have the slightest bit of hope, it won't help you, no matter how much you believe.

Marlene Everdeen, a fifteen year old brunette girl stands in front of her slightly broken mirror. Looking at herself, dressed in a white dress shirt that is tucked into her slightly long skirt that stops by her knees, her dirty flats on her feet, and the braid crown she had done herself.

Everyone in the theater watches, mesmerized on how someone as young as fourteen could look that stunning, although Rebekah winced slightly at the outfit Marlena has on, she makes a mental note to take her shopping at some point.

Klaus still in denial, refusing to look at her face, not only was she fifteen right now but he also still couldn't come to terms with the fact that someone was made for him, that he was made for someone.

To him that just wasn't possible, someone as innocent as that girl could not be his, the devil himself, other half, it just wasn't possible.

Marlena has the slightest bit of hope left in her, a fifteen year old, only has a slight bit of hope left. Today was the day of The Reaping.

A day that hunts people. A day that everyone is terrified of. Parents terrified for their children, children terrified for what their future holds, in which most cases include death.

Today marks day one of something so gruesome, tragic and heartbreaking.

The annual Hunger games.

The thing that people in the capital find to be entertaining. A time every year, a male and female tribute is picked from each district between the ages of twelve and eighteen to fight to the death until a lone victor remains.

Everyone in the theater has the mouth open, in shock.

How could anyone want that??
How could anyone make that happen??
How could people find that entertaining to watch??
Children fighting for their life's!

Not even Klaus can fathom why anyone in their right mind would do something like that to innocent beings.

After getting many of the younger children Marlena has taken under her wing and babysits dressed and ready, she herself went home and had gotten herself ready.

Standing in front of her mirror every year seems to be something Marlena finds her self doing.

The creek from Marlena's wooden bedroom door is heard, she snaps her head to said door just to find the woman she calls mother, even if they don't share blood, blood doesn't make you family.

"You look gorgeous my dearest Marlena." Abigail Whitney, a beautiful dark headed older lady smiled, dressed in a similar dress to Marlena except it was sky blue and a long length down her legs down to her calves.

"Thank you mama." Marlena gave a slight smile, not her usual bright smile. Abigail signs, her smile going away as she walks up and behind Marlena and places her hands on the smaller girls shoulders, trying to bring any form of comfort even though nothing can take away how Marlena feels but she appreciates the attempt.

"Okay darling, let's not wallow in sadness, let's get a move on it." Abigail sates, giving Marlena's shoulders a soft squeeze before pulling away and walking out of the room.

After watching her mother walk out her bedroom, Marlene turns back to the mirror, taking one last quick look before signing softly, her eyes slightly dull.

Marlena turns on her hill and walks out her bedroom, following her mother out the rundown wooden home and down the dirt road where multiple other children and their parents walk also.

After separating from her mother Marlena gets into the long line, having now reaching the front she holds out her hand, the women sitting on a chair behind the table pricks Marlena's finger with a device making blood come out, she presses the younger girls finger onto a sheet where other prints of blood also lay.

"This is terrible." Davina says with soft eyes as she shakes her head at the scene.

"Who in their sick mind came up with this? And it's an annual thing!" Rebekah follows Davina in complaints.

The rest of them just shake their heads at the sight of children with zero emotion on their face except maybe two, sadness? Frightens? They couldn't say, maybe all the above.

Marlena makes her way to the group of girls her age, pushing through the body's of other girls and making her way to the front of them all.

A woman dressed in a soft green suit, ruffles going up the pants legs and bigger puffs on the shoulder sleeves, a vest like thing strapped to her torso with leaves of all different types of colors. Green heels to match. Along with her hair in a crazy up due with a headband that also had leaves on it.

"Okay honestly, What is it with these women and their outfits!" Kol shouts as he threw his arms in the air.

Rebekah couldn't help but agree as she winced at the outfit choices, the other lowly making their own opinions on the outfits.

Klaus shook his head at the fact that his siblings were talking about fucking outfits right now.

Davina giggled slightly at Kol, making a smile slowly come onto Kol's face.

"Welcome! Happy Hunger Games to you all. And, may the odds be ever in your favor." The woman known as Esme Valkount speaks, a wide smile on her face.

"Now, the time has come for us to select one courageous young man and woman for the honor of representing District 7 in the 69th Annual Hunger Games. As usual, ladies first." Esme continues as she moves over to the pool of names, and draws a piece of paper. She goes back to the microphone and opens it.

The silence is loud as she opens the small piece of paper, everyone holding their breath hoping and praying they don't get picked and have another year to continue their lives as is.

"Marlena Everdeen!" Esme calls out, the smile still wide on her face as she begins clapping,"Come on up sweetie!" Esme continues.

"Of course it's her." Klaus muttered under his breath, suddenly already feeling protective of the girl.

Once he realized what he said, he shook is head, attempting to get rid of the protective thoughts as his siblings shook there head at him.

Lot's of gasp follow and slight protest come from the district 7 people as Marlena with her head held high, walks to the middle where the walk way is, two peace keepers stand behind her following, a hand placed on her lower back as she walks up the stairs with no emotion on her face, her eyes tell a different story, that she's actually terrified.

That little bit a hope she had left vanished the moment her name left Esme's mouth.

"Hello dear." Esme greets her with a even brighter smile as Marlena stands next to her, she doesn't greet her back, no smile, she doesn't even look at her she just stands there looking out into the large crowd.

"Why is she so happy?" Elijah asked with a frown.

"I don't know, maybe because she along with most of these people are bat shit crazy." Rebekah sarcastically says with a smile before her smile drops.

If you couldn't tell she's still salty that they aren't watching her mates early life, and she just so happens to take a small part of the rage out on her brother.

Esme's smile slowly disappears before quickly returning to her wide smile,"Now, time for the boy's." The older woman says as she walks to the other large clear bowl and pulls out a name.

"Billy Stone!" Esme calls out into the microphone, and immediately a young dark skinned boy who Marlena assumed was Billy, who looks about 12 years old burst into tears, immediately screaming for his mother. And an older woman standing with the parents who Marlena assumed was the boys mother also screamed and cried for her baby boy.

Marcel winced, the little boy look like a younger him and he just couldn't help but see himself in the other dark skinned boy.

He didn't move a muscle as he cry's his eyes out, then two peace keepers grab's Billy by his arms practically dragging him into the walkway and up the same steps Marlena went up.

"Poor thing." Rebekah says with a frown, the others also have frowns.

They knew how cruel people can be, they know probably better than anyone but this was a small child. Only 12 years old.

The peace keepers made him stand on the other side of Esme before leaving the stage.

"Well, that was depressing, and sure took up some time!" Esme says with a small laugh as the younger boy continues to cry on the left side of her.

"Okay what is wrong with this woman!" Kol shouts throwing his hands up in the air again, the others shushing him.

"Here we are, our tributes from District 7. Well come on you two, shake hands!" Esme told them excitedly,

Marlena didn't move an inch, neither did the young boy but he was too busy crying his eyes out still. Finally Marlena turns to him slightly and places her hand gently on the younger boys shoulder before quickly removing it and placing her arm back at her side.

Perhaps it was the babysitter in her that couldn't help but wanna comfort the smaller boy.

Marcel smiled a bit, happy that the little boy had some sort of comfort even if it wasn't much.

The people of district 7 stay silent still as they lift their hand in a 3 finger salute which is a sign of admiration, gratitude and saying goodbye to someone they care about.

"That's nice. Maybe we should come up with our own sign that say's, 'sorry we killed you but you sure were tasty'" Rebekah said looking at Klaus who does nothing but roll his eyes and turn back to the screen.

"Sassy." Rebekah commented with a smirk.

"We- well then!" Esme stutters before continuing,"Happy hunger games, and may the odds be ever in your favor!" Esme says happily as she gives one last rushed clap.

As peace keepers bring Marlena and Billy into the justice building, holding them by the arm. She snatched her arm away from the peace keeper sending them a large glare.

If looks could kill they would be dead.

Klaus couldn't help but smirk at that before it quickly goes away and his face returned to emotionless. His siblings once again shaking their head at him.

One of them goes a different way with Billy and the other shoves Marlena into a room that has one window, a lone couch and a single green plant.

She paced around the room knowing that she would have to say goodbye to her mother, as soon as that though comes to mind the door burst open, her mother rushing in with tears streaming down her face.

"3 minutes." A peace keeper said before the door shut.

"Only 3 minutes, why not just add 2 more. There literally gonna fight to the death, the least they could do is give these young people more time with their family's." Kol says with a shake of his head.

"Why do you have so much to say?" Rebekah asked as she sent him a glare for talking.

"Oh and you don't?" Kol replied with a raised eyebrow and the caused an argument to break out,

"Children please," Elijah said once again, already done with his siblings antics.

They surprisingly stop and send each other one last glare before looking back at the screen.

"Oh sweetheart!" Abigail cried out as she hugged her daughter tightly.

"Mama I know how you feel right now, but it's gonna be okay, you're gonna be okay, don't worry about me." Marlena quickly talked as she hugged her mother just as tight.

"Just- Ju- Just please take care of yourself." Marlena rushed out as she pulls away placing her hands on her mother's shoulder.

Everyone frowned at the shakiness in her voice.

When Abigail's husband died she was in a very, very bad place. She was angry all the time. Didn't eat. Didn't shower. She was just so angry at the world. It got so bad that she almost took her own life.

Marlena caught her mother just as she was about to cut her wrist in the wooden bathtub with a knife from the kitchen.

The only way Marlena knew was she had just came home from from hunting, ready to help her mother cook dinner, after placing her makeshift bow down is when she realized the knife her mother loved to use and her mother was no where to be found, and with the bathroom door closed.

Marlena just knew.

Everyone frowns, they seem to be doing that a lot.
Marlena was only 14 right now, how traumatizing that could've been for such a young girl.

Abigail just cried as she brought her daughter back into a tight hug,"Mama promise me!" Marlena says more urgent, as tears welled in her eyes and yet she didn't let them fall.

A peace keeper burst into the room and dragged Abigail by her arms,"Promise me!" Marlena shouted as she followed the peace keeper dragging her mother to the door.

The last thing Marlena heard was her mother's cry's, she didn't promise. Why didn't she promise her?!

As Marlena sat down on the small couch, her head in her hands she finally broke down into tears as she had one thing running through her mind as the young girl, alone at last, finally began to let panic sink in.

The odds are never in our favor.

"What the actual hell are we in for." Kol breaks the silence as the screen turns dark.

The others sit quietly, thinking the same thing.
