prologue

The jolting of her body awakened Winona Martin from her slumber. She groggily opened her tired eyes to see the whizzing of trees as the car drove by them. "... always sleeping. It's ridiculous. Lazy bum." Elaine Martin sat in the driver's seat beside Winona. The radio was playing lowly and Elaine tapped her fingers on the steering wheel along to the beat of the song.

She glanced over at Winona, who was slowly sitting up, and smirked. "Good, you're finally awake," she commented. "How long have I been asleep?" Winona questioned. "I don't know. A while," Elaine answered. Winona rolled her eyes and sat up completely.

"You know, if you're gonna talk shit, you should make sure I'm actually asleep," Winona said. Elaine gave her a quick glance before looking back at the road in front of her. "I wasn't talking shit," she said. Winona scoffed in disbelief, "No need to lie El, I heard you."

"But--" Elaine is cut off by Winona turning up the music. "I love this song!" The younger girl said. Winona began singing along to the song and Elaine turned it down. "Hey! Don't kill my vibe!" Winona complained. "It's too loud," Elaine defended.

Winona looked out of the window at her side. "Where are we going anyway?" She asked. "Right now? To a grocery store to stock up on some food. Then we're meeting up with someone who can help us get across the border," Elaine answered. Winona sighed, "So we're finally gonna get out of this stupid country?" Elaine smiled and nodded.

Winona turned her attention back to the window, watching the objects whiz by. When they got to the grocery store, Elaine parked the car in an empty spot before turning to Winona. "Okay, we're gonna keep a low profile. Try not to attract attention to us," the girl said.

Winona scoffed, "Me? What about you?" The Asian girl rolled her eyes. "Just shut up and do as I say," she retorted. "You know, just because you're older than me, does not mean you can tell me what to do," Winona said as Elaine turned off the car's ignition.

"That's exactly what it means," Elaine responded before opening the driver's side door and stepping out of the car. Winona glowered at the girl as she too stepped out of the vehicle. Elaine locked the car and began walking into the Wal-Mart, Winona trudging behind her.

"Grab a kart and go get whatever you want, I'll do the same," Elaine said. "Whatever," Winona mumbled. She grabbed a shopping kart and began walking to the chip aisle. "Don't get too much junk food!" Elaine called after her sister. Winona ignored her and continued her journey to the aisle.

Once she reached it, she grabbed multiple bags of Lays and Doritos. She then made her way to the soda aisle. She grabbed two twelve packs of Sprite and two packs of Coca Cola for Elaine. "Her shoes are so cute." Winona turned around and looked for the source of the loud voice. She scrunched up her face in confusion and turned back around.

After getting more things, some healthy, she found herself in an aisle full of wine. She made her way through the aisle as she tried to reach another. "They have alcohol in Mexico," she muttered as she looked at one of the bottles. Winona's eyes began to burn and she blinked profusely. "Looking a little young to be looking at wine." Winona turned around and saw a woman looking at her. The woman turned away when she met Winona's gaze.

"Excuse me?" The girl questioned. The woman turned to her with a smile, one that Winona wasn't sure was real. "What did you say?" Winona asked. "I didn't say anything," the woman denied. "You sure? Because I could've sworn that I heard you say that I looked a little young to be looking at wine," Winona said.

The woman's mouth fell agape as she looked at the girl in mild horror. "What the hell? I didn't say that out loud." Winona's face contorted into one of confusion as she heard the woman's voice again. And that was because she didn't see the woman's mouth move as she spoke. The two stepped away from each other. The woman scurried out of the aisle and Winona began to make her way out of it as well.

"I swear if James doesn't text me back..." Winona's head whipped around and she looked in every direction. "I cannot believe that she doesn't like pickles." Her eyes were still burning and her vision began to blur.

"I really hope mom doesn't find out about this party." Winona stopped pushing the cart and looked around the store. No one was paying her any attention. "I could really go for a burger right now."

"Parker is so cute."

"That bitch needs to lay off on the donuts."

"Fuck Sydney. She ain't shit."

"I need to catch up on Stranger Things."

The multiple voices in her head grew louder and louder with each word. By now, her eyes were on fire. Winona abandoned her kart and began running through the store, looking for Elaine. She bumped into someone as she ran, muttering an apology as she continued. "Watch out!" Winona grew frantic as more voices entered her head.

She let out a cry of pain and clamped her hands over her ears, hoping that it would help muffle the voices. It didn't. Winona squeezed her eyes shut as she sunk down to her knees. She pressed her hands harder onto her ears. "Excuse me Miss, are you all right?" It was a man. Winona opened her eyes to look at him. He would've looked normal except for the fact that he was silver. In fact, everything looked silver. Winona rubbed her eyes, hoping that the strange hue would go away. It didn't.

She closed her eyes again. The voices got louder and their words began to jumble together. In a matter of seconds, the numerous thoughts began screaming. And so did she. Winona let out an ear piercing shriek, a shriek that she had never heard come out of her mouth before. The kind of scream that you would think made glass break.

The man in front of her covered his ears. He grunted in pain as she screamed so loudly and high pitched. Her eyes shout open and she could see people around her covering their ears as well. Some shelves in the nearby aisles were thrown backward as her scream grew louder. The man in front of her was thrown off his feet.

She tried to stop. Tried to make the noise coming out of her mouth seize. But she couldn't. It wouldn't stop. A woman was running away from her, her ears bleeding. She could hear glass shattering and things breaking. But she couldn't stop screaming. "Winnie!" A voice yelled over her shrieks. She knew it was Elaine. The older girl rushed over to her sister, her own hands covering her ears. "Winnie, stop!" Elaine tried.

Elaine's eyes closed as she fought the pain. She released her ears and grabbed Winona's face. "Stop!" She yelled loudly. Her ears were bleeding as well and that seemed to get Winona to slowly stop screaming.

Winona could hear a slight ringing in her ears as she looked around the grocery store. She had caused a lot more damage than she had thought. Her teary eyes looked in front of her at the man whose body lay still. Her breathing picked up as she scampered over to him. His whole face was bloody. Blood began drying around his ears, nose, and eyes.

The girl placed two fingers on his neck and checked for a pulse. She couldn't find one. "Oh my God," she muttered over and over again. "Winnie, we have to go," Elaine said. She grabbed onto her arm and began pulling her off of the ground. "Come on. Come on!" Elaine exclaimed.

Winona could see the terror in the people's eyes as she and Elaine ran out of the Wal-Mart. The two quickly entered the car and Elaine started it up. She sped out of the parking lot and drove down the road. Neither girl said anything as Elaine drove. Winona wasn't sure where they were going and she didn't care. As long as they were far away from that store, she was fine with wherever.

Winona sat on a bed in a motel room. The TV was on and she was watching the news. "I had thought something and it's like she heard it. She knew what I was thinking and it freaked me out. Later on there was this scream. It was so loud I thought my eardrums would burst. Low and behold it was the mind reader," the woman from the wine aisle said.

Winona scowled at the screen before looking away. Elaine walked out of the bathroom and into the room. She glanced at the TV as the news reporter began talking about the two girls, their faces plastered on the screen. Elaine picked up the remote and turned off the TV.

The younger girl was looking down at her hands. Elaine sighed and took a seat next to Winona on the bed. "Hey, it's gonna be okay," she said softly. "I killed someone," Winona whispered. "It was an accident," Elaine responded. "Doesn't matter. I still killed him. He's still dead. Now the police are after us," she retorted.

"You didn't mean to do it, Win. It's not like you could control it. It just happened," Elaine said. Winona rubbed her face with her hands and sighed. "This is all my fault," she muttered. A loud knock on the room door halted Elaine's next words. Both girls froze. Elaine placed a finger to her lips.

Another knock sounded, this one more forceful than the first. "Police, open up!" A male voice called. Winona's eyes widened and she grew frantic. "Get your bag!" Elaine whisper shouted. Winona did as she was told and grabbed her bag. Another pounding knock was heard. "We know you're in there, open the door or we'll open it ourselves!" Another voice yelled.

Elaine ushered her sister into the bathroom. She locked the door behind her and scurried to the window above the toilet. She stood on the toilet and pushed the window open. "Go!" Elaine urged. She stepped off of the toilet and allowed Winona to get on. The girl threw her backpack out of the window. She then pulled herself up and pushed herself out of the window, landing on her feet.

She grabbed her backpack waited a moment and saw Elaine's bag land on the ground. Elaine came next and pushed herself out of the window. She landed on her feet and picked up her backpack. The two girls began running away from the motel room. When they made it to the stairs, they saw more police officers.

"Hey!" One of them shouted, drawing the attention of the rest of the officers. "Run!" Winona yelled. The two girls ran down the stairs and into the parking lot. The police officers followed quickly behind them. Elaine pulled out the car keys as they ran.

A large black van pulled up in front of them, causing the girls to skid to a stop. Men stepped out of the vehicle, all holding weapons. Winona was certain of one thing, those men were not the police. Elaine stepped backward and toward her sister. She slipped the car keys into Winona's hand.

"Put your hands on your heads and get on the ground!" A bald man called. "I'm gonna handle this. You get to the car and I'll meet you there," Elaine muttered. "I'm not leaving you alone," Winona interjected. "Just do it!" And with that Elaine twisted her hand around, allowing for the electricity to gather in it.

"Stop! Get down on the ground now!" The same man yelled. They were all holding their guns up, pointing them at Elaine. Elaine threw her hand out, allowing the electricity to leave it and soar towards the men. They all dove out of the way as the electricity struck their vehicle.

"Go now!" Elaine shouted. Winona turned in another direction and began running to their car. She looked behind her to see some police officers and the other men chasing after her. She pushed a trashcan over and into their path and continued running. She reached the car and unlocked it quickly.

She slid into the vehicle and shoved the key into the ignition, starting the car. She pulled out of the parking spot and drove back to where Elaine was. Winona rolled down the window. "Elaine, come on!" She hollered. Elaine's eyes met hers and she threw one more burst of electricity before running to the car.

As she got closer to the car, Elaine's body jolted slightly before she fell to the ground. Winona's eyes widened and she saw one of the men holding a strange looking gun. "Elaine!" Winona yelled. She scampered out of the car and attempted to get to her sister but Elaine shook her head. "Winona go!" She called weakly. The police were running to where Winona stood then.

She shook her head, tears falling from her eyes. "Go! Now!" Elaine commanded. Winona reluctantly got back into the car and slammed the door shut. She put the car in drive and began driving out of the parking lot. The police shot at her car as she sped out of the parking lot.

The other officers began running to their own vehicles but were stopped. "No! Let her go," the bald man, Jace Turner, commanded. "But sir--" one of his colleagues began before he was interrupted. "Let her go. It's safer this way. But don't worry, we will find her," Jace said.

He turned back to Elaine who lay unconscious on the ground. "Get her in the van," he commanded.
