chapter twenty two

Clarice was driving the large van that contained the Struckers, Winona, and Sonya. Winona tapped her foot anxiously before resorting to bouncing her leg up and down. Lauren placed a hand on her knee to stop it from bouncing. "Don't worry. It's gonna be okay," she assured. Winona shook her head. "I'm not so sure about that," she replied.

"We can do this," Lauren tried. "It's just this plan, it's risky, you know?" Winona said. Lauren nodded in understanding. "Well, you and I make a good team. We got this," Lauren said. Winona sent her a smile though it wasn't genuine. Reed pulled out his ringing phone and answered it.

"Copy that. We're en route. We're almost at the power substation... Okay, be safe out there," Reed said before hanging up. Winona took a deep breath and released it slowly. We got this. We can do this. She always felt uneasy with the unknown. None of them knew what exactly was gonna happen in there and that scared her.

Anything could go wrong at any moment if they weren't careful. "What we're doing here, it's a parent's worst nightmare," Caitlin spoke. "We can handle--" Caitlin cut Andy off. "Andy, we know. We know you can. We're doing this because we trust you," she said. Winona felt awkward being in the middle of their family moment and was grateful when Clarice spoke.

"Hey, guys, heads up. We're here," she informed. Winona took another intake of air and slowly released it. Clarice continued driving until she reached a parking lot. She pulled the van to a stop and parked it, turning off the ignition. It was now or never. Everyone stood from their seats and began getting ready.

Reed called Sage and put the phone on speaker. "Yeah," came Sage's voice. "We're ready," Reed informed. "Okay. Bypassing firewall. And you should have picture in three, two, one," Sage was saying. Winona zipped up her jacket, feeling cold suddenly. The computer screen lit up and the cameras could be seen on it.

"Okay. It's working," Reed said. "Looped the camera feeds so security won't see our team. But they'll notice eventually, so be quick," Sage said and Reed hung up the phone. "Okay, guys. I'm gonna need some room here, kid," Clarice said as she readied herself to open up a portal. "Uh, yeah," Andy said, backing away from her.

Clarice's hands came together and she began pulling them apart. The portal opened up much more quicker than it used to. She was getting better at this, Winona thought. A proud smile made its way onto her face. The Strucker children began hugging their parents goodbye. "Um, guys? It's a little trickier than holding an elevator. Can we hurry this up please?" Clarice said.

The Struckers pulled away from one another. "Winona?" Caitlin called as she prepared to enter the portal. Winona stopped and turned to her. Caitlin had an unsure look on her face. "Don't worry. I'll keep them safe," Winona assured. Caitlin allowed herself to smile and shook her head.

"I was going to say be careful. But thank you for the reassurance," the blonde woman said before pulling her into a hug. The hug was brief but needed on both ends. Winona sent her a smile and turned back to the portal as Andy and Lauren began going through. Reed gave Winona a reassuring squeeze on the shoulder and she flashed him a quick smile before following after Lauren who had just gone through the portal.

Sonya went in after Winona and Clarice was obviously the last to go through. They all stood briefly and looked around the area before beginning to follow behind Sonya. She used the key card information to get them into the building. They came to a chain fence and Sonya pushed it open, pausing and looking up at a black camera on the wall.

A hand went to the earpiece in her ear. "Hey. Can you hear me okay? We made it inside," Sonya said before waiting for a response. "All right, we're going in," the redhead said after a moment. The five began walking forward, Winona looked around to make sure that there was nobody else there. Sonya stopped suddenly, causing the rest of the group to halt in their movements.

They all moved against the walls as some people walked past the door that was in front of them. Sonya held up a hand and Winona involuntarily held her breath. She kept her eyes trained on the door as the people walked by. None of them looked in their direction, much to her relief.

Sonya motioned for them to follow her and they began walking again. The redhead carefully opened the door and they all entered the hallway. They looked down both ends, Winona preparing herself in case someone were to come out unexpectedly. "Sure you know where you're going?" Lauren asked Sonya uneasily.

"Um, pretty sure. The guard I borrowed the memory from had only been here a few times, so it's a little hazy," Sonya replied. She didn't sound sure at all, which made Winona nervous. Sonya turned right and began walking down the corridor. "Maybe we should go the other way?" Winona suggested unsurely.

"No. I'm almost positive that it's this way," came Sonya's reply. "The transformer we need to take out is in the middle of the building," Clarice informed. "So why didn't you just portal us there?" Andy asked. Winona rolled her eyes at the question, awaiting Clarice's response that she was sure would be sassy. Sonya held up a hand and Winona pushed herself onto the wall next to Lauren.

"Can you make a portal through a hundred walls into a room you've never seen before and land safely next to a high-voltage transformer?" Clarice asked him. Sonya wiggled her fingers to beckon them all forward. "No," Andy said. "Yeah. Neither can I," the purple haired girl replied. A smile graced Winona's features. The four continued following after Sonya.

Winona really wished that the transformer was closer so that they could get out of there. Once again, Sonya held up a hand to stop the group. A security guard with dark skin and a bald head stepped out of a room and Sonya walked forward. "What are you doing here?" He asked them. Sonya was quick to respond.

"Oh, did they not call? From the front desk?" She asked, walking forward until she was standing in front of him. He eyed her cautiously before responding. "No, I didn't get a call. Hang on just a sec," he said, beginning to pull out his walkie talkie. "Come on. You remember me," the redhead said before blowing air out of her mouth. A pinkish purple mist emitted from her lips and went into the man's face.

His head tilted back slightly as he breathed it in. "I would not wanna be on the receiving end of that," Winona muttered and Lauren nodded in agreement. Clarice sent her a look and Winona smiled. "Sorry," she said. She turned her attention back to the two many feet in front of her. Sonya sucked the mist back into her mouth and the security guard looked at her.

He had a dazed expression on his face as Sonya spoke. "Or maybe you don't remember," she said. The man looked past her and began walking forward. Winona watched his every motion. He pulled out his gun and she took a protective stance in front of the Struckers. Lauren held up an arm.

The guard looked at his gun and walkie before throwing them into the trash and walking past them. Winona grew relieved once he was gone. They all began walking again. Sonya led them down different hallways. They were all careful and on high alert. Winona felt a little at ease knowing that the Strucker parents were watching their backs using the cameras.

But she couldn't relax just yet. They needed to destroy the transformer and get the hell out of there. "Got it. Thanks," Sonya said into the earpiece. They continued going forward. Every once in a while, Winona would turn to watch their backs, making sure that no one was following them. She took every precaution possible.

Sonya led them all to a staircase and they all ascended it. They came to another hallway and Winona was growing annoyed with how big the building was. This hallway was a little different than the others. This confused her but she didn't think too much about it. She had more pressing matters to think about. Like getting out of this thing alive.

It wasn't too long after that Sonya reached for her earpiece and stopped. "Wait, I don't understand. What's going on?" The redhead spoke. An uneasy feeling washed over Winona and she began looking around. Sonya listened for a moment before turning to face them. "We gotta go. Now," she said before turning and running. The rest followed after her.

"What the hell is going on?" Clarice asked as the five ran around a corner. "They know we're here. They're coming for us," Sonya called back to them. "Shit," Winona said as she took up running at the back. Her head continuously turned to make sure that no one was coming from behind. An alarm sounded and began blaring loudly.

They ran down an unfamiliar hallway. "What about the power transformer?" Lauren asked. "There's no time! Clarice, you gotta get us out," Sonya replied hastily. They all came to a stop as Clarice spoke. "I don't even know where we are in this building. I don't know which direction," she said. She then began attempting to open a portal but all that came out were sparks.

Clarice turned to face another direction as she panted. "The-the, there's too many hallways, I don't know," Clarice panicked. "Hurry please!" Lauren cried. "I-I-I know, I'm trying," Clarice said. "Clarice calm down. It's okay. You can do this," Winona said. Her eyes held panic as the alarm continued to blare.

"Okay. Okay I got it," Clarice said. Winona let out a relieved breath. "Guys!" Andy shouted, his finger pointing ahead of them. One of the metallic spider robots was coming. "Guys! Hey, guys, guys!" Lauren looked at her brother. "Andy!" She screamed. "Uh, yeah, m-move, move," he said, holding out an arm. Winona and Clarice moved out of his way. He held up both arms and began grunting. He pulled his hands apart and a pipe exploded.

They all watched with wide eyes. Red lights shone through the steam from the pipe and the robot stood proudly. Winona's head whipped to Clarice's direction. She couldn't open the portal. Clarice turned to them all quickly. "Run!" She shouted. They all obliged and took off running. A grunt and thud caused Winona to turn around.

"Clarice!" She shouted. The metallic robot came and pinned Clarice down. "No!" Winona and Sonya shouted. Clarice looked at one of the spider's legs before looking up at them. "Go! Go!" Clarice yelled. Sonya had to pull Winona away when she went to help Clarice. The redhead yanked her arm. "Come on. Come on!" She urged, though she too was reluctant to leave Clarice.

The remaining four continued down the hallway. She could faintly hear footsteps bounding behind them and turned to see men with guns running to catch up to them. She turned back to face the others as they continued to run. "Keep going!" She exclaimed before stopping abruptly and turning to face the agents. "Winnie, no!" Lauren yelled but she was ignored. "Go!" Winona yelled. "Winona!" That was Sonya. The agents were catching up.

"Go now!" She shouted, turning to face her friends. They did as she said and she turned back to where the agents were fast approaching. "Get down on the ground!" One exclaimed. There were four of them. Winona concentrated, her eyes turning silver as she got into their minds. "Drop your guns," she commanded. They involuntarily did as they were told.

She lifted up a hand, wisps of energy gathered in it. It began building up. She sent it forward at one of them, rendering him unconscious. She tried to do the same thing to the other three but it didn't work. Instead, she concentrated harder and was able to knock them out using just her mind before turning around and running again. She slid to a stop as more agents came in front of her.

Winona turned the other way and more were there. Some of them branched out, going after Sonya, Lauren, and Andy. The agents yelled at her to get down on the ground but she didn't move. She desperately looked for a way out but there was none. A thought formed in her mind and it was in that moment that she knew what she had to do.

She quickly took a deep breath and concentrated, closing her eyes. She remembered John's words about fear. When you let fear control you, you won't be effective in what you do. She began to let it all go. The fear. The anger. She could feel something building up inside of her, the agents' words fading away. When she opened her eyes, she looked at the guards stood around her, all pointing their weapons.

Winona's mouth opened and she let out an ear piercing scream. The same scream that was heard in the grocery store. The scream that Clarice referred to as a siren scream. The same scream that hadn't left her lips in over a year. She wasn't afraid anymore. The agents' guns slowly fell out of their hands. They cried out, clamping their hands over their ears. Some slowly fell to the ground.

Winona's scream grew louder and the men were thrown backward and away from her. She then quickly felt something pierce the skin on her back before shocks of electricity were sent through her body. The scream died on her lips as her body jerked erratically. She cried out before falling to the floor.

The electricity seized and she twitched a few times before stopping. Something was pulled out of her back and her breathing slowed slightly. She then breathed heavily, anger coursing through her veins. One of the agents took her hands and pinned them behind her back. She could see a shiny black shoe before she was roughly pulled to her knees. Another agent came and clamped something around her neck.

Winona looked at the agent in front of her distastefully, hate filling her body as he spoke into his walkie talkie. She hoped that she was able to cause a long enough distraction. That Sonya, Andy, and Lauren had gotten out. Winona was hauled to her feet and the agents began leading her down the hallway.
