54. Goodbye

PAT STOOD BESIDE THE WINDOW, "Okay, I see him coming out of the fog," Pat said. Micheal sat at the chair, finishing his drink and placing his cigarette in his mouth. They watched as Tommy walked into the room.

"How was the flight?"

"They say it's the future, i'm not so sure. Whiskey" he sat. "Hello, Micheal"

"Tommy" he nodded.

"Give me another" Tommy instructed, finishing his drink. "Cassidy, it's a pleasure to see you again."

"And you, Tommy."

"We want you to take us to where the opium is being stored," Micheal said. "And then we will provide you with the bankers draft for the full amount" Connor spoke.

"Five million dollars" Tommy said. "Five million dollars" Micheal repeated, taking his hat and walking outside.

"I'll go with Tommy, you boys follow behind"

"I'll wait here then..i suppose." Cassidy spoke, guilt in her stomach.

Tommy got to the car and Micheal felt about his pockets. "Shit, forgot me cigarettes" he said, walking back inside. Tommy got inside the car, closing the door.

Micheal hadn't forgot his cigarettes..

The men in the other car watched carefully from behind.

Micheal sat, taking his hat off and placing his gun on the table. Tommy looked down at his pocket watch, watching the seconds go down.

"You're not shooting him are you?" She whispered. "You're fucking blowing him up."

Michael's heart pounded.

Tommy sat patiently, looking at the steering wheel.

Micheal jumped as a loud bang sounded, smashing the windows of the pub. Glass shattered everywhere. He slowly lifted him head, breathing heavily. "Mum, it's done. It's over. May god forgive me"

"Stay here,"

Micheal looked over his shoulder, walking outside, freezing when he saw that Tommy's car was perfectly fine and the other one was up in flames.

Tommy got out the car, gun in hand. He pointed it. "Johnny, Johnny where are you?" he shouted.

Johnny Dogs walked round.

"I changed the ticker like you said, Tom. Tell me i've done a good thing here Tom."

Micheal looked between the two. "Goodbye Micheal"

"Goodbye Johnny, you're a good man."

"I'm gonna go look at the fog, Tom" Johnny nodded, walking off. "I knew that the second you left Cassidy in that pub, you were going to try kill me, Micheal." Tommy said, staring at him coldly. "Anyone could've known. Micheal Gray never exposes Cassidy James to danger"

"Speak to me. Speak to me Micheal." Tommy said. "You killed her" Micheal said. "Polly made her own choices, Micheal"

"No. No one close to you makes a choice without your opinion Tom. Not Arthur, not me, not Ada. We can't escape you. Your lethal hand is always on our shoulders. Thomas if you're going to kill me, you promise me one thing, let one good thing come from your actions..you let Cassidy and my daughter go free, let her get away from all of this."

"Polly was half of me, still visits me in my dreams. She'll visit me no more" he said before sending a bullet into Michael's body. His body flew backwards, hitting the floor. "I have no limitations" he whispered.

Cassidy jumped up from her seat, running outside and letting a scream leave her mouth as she saw Micheal laying there. She watched as Tommy walked back through the fog. "No, no..Micheal. Come one, Micheal," She shouted, rushing to his side and pulling his body up to hers. Time began moving in slow motion as the weather was tempestuous but his eyes remained seraphic. Tears fell from her eyes rapidly as her heart ached. He looked at her with gentle, cold eyes.

"Don't go, Michael please don't go." Her voice cracked.

"Cassidy you have to let me go this time. I'm sorry, i'm so so sorry." He struggled to get his words out as he looked as if he was choking. "Give my little girl my love, yeah?" He forced a smile, holding her hand right as he struggled to breath.

Then his eyes closed and his heart stopped as blood covered both their bodies.

A blood curdling scream left Cassidy's mouth as she sobbed harder than she ever had before. She leaned down, placing a head on his chest and taking both his hands in hers. "Micheal come back, you love me, you said you wouldn't leave," she croaked.

Her heart had broken. It felt as though it had shattered into a million pieces. "Me and Adeline need you, come back." She begged, holding his limp and cold body.

-

Cassidy held Adeline who too sobbed in her mothers arms. Isiah sat with tears eyes as he stood. "Micheal..he er..gave me this, incase it went wrong." He held out a piece of paper.

Cassidy's whole body hurt as she took the paper from his hands, her hands shaking.

My dearest Cassidy,
When i first met you, i knew you'd either complete me or completely destroy me. And i'm so glad that it was the first one. Cassidy, you completed every part of me. And i'm so sorry that you had to receive this letter because you and i both know that time moves slower when you miss somebody. Cassidy i have loved you ever since i laid eyes on you and i apologise for all the hurt i have caused. You deserve happiness and i hope you can find that without me. And i understand this will hurt more than anything because we were not supposed to get attached. I love you Cassie. And i love Adeline too, give her my love, give her the love you got from me. This is my last goodbye, to our good memories and our bad. To the stupid jokes we'd laugh at and the jokes we never quite got. And to all the what-if's and all the plans we made. Cassidy, you were my beginning, my middle and my end. I'm sorry i could only be your beginning.

- Micheal.

Cassidy's eyes blurred with tears as she folded up the paper and covered her face. Isiah placed an arm around the two girls, hugging them. "He loved us, Isiah, he said he wouldn't leave. He promised,"

-

Adeline sat on the edge of her bed, her father's jacket draped over her body. "Adeline," she heard a whisper. She sat up, frightened, looking around and almost screaming when she saw Micheal sat on her bed. "My girl, smile, please." He begged.

"But you're dead.."

"Yes. I am, i'm dead. But i need you to smile, i don't want you to be sad. Be happy, do it for your mother."

She lunged forward, wrapping her arms around him and collapsing under him, her eyes burning. He was dead yet it felt like he was actually hugging her. "Do you remember when Polly died? And you said you could see her? Well you can see me too, i'm not here my darling. You have a gift. Adeline, you can see spirits," he whispered. "So whenever you need me i'll be there, not real, but there. And i'll be watching, i'll be making sure everything is okay."

"Why did you leave?"

"I had no choice," He whispered, rubbing her back. "But you'll do just fine without me, i promise. Isiah will stay around, he'll be there. And I love you, don't forget that." He said.

-

Cassidy sat with shaky hands, a pile of letters in her hand which she'd found stashed away in one of Michael's hand. All dated from different times. Letters he'd wrote for her but never given her.

Each and every one of them expressed his love and care for her. Some expressed his apologies for what he'd done over the years.

Her hand gripped a particular letter tightly. One from whilst he was in America all then years ago. He'd sent it after he'd gotten with Gina, he'd admitted his still existing love for her. But he hadn't sent it. Why hadn't he sent it? Why hadn't he sent any of them.

Her eyes scanned the words over and over again, her heart hurting.

He really did write like he was running out of time.

-

And with that, Cassidy James and Micheal Gray's story came to a tragic end. Where Cassidy was left to her own devices once more. Adeline left without a father, again. Although life went on, it would never be the same again.

Cassidy never thought she'd experience pain as terrible as the one she'd been feeling after Michael's death. The only thing that kept her holding on was Adeline.
