Isaac paced around in his small cell, desperately trying not to focus on how it vaguely reminded him of the ice box his father used to lock him in for hours on end. He needed to focus on trying to connect with Meilani again and make sure she was okay. Time was like an imaginary thing to him right now as he had no sense of how long it'd actually been since the last time he'd heard her voice. An odd feeling bubbled in the pit of his stomach and he couldn't tell what it was.
It was almost . . . animalistic.
The door to Isaac's cage suddenly unlatched and opened up, revealing the back corridors to Isaac. His ears perked up to listen for anything that was nearby but he couldn't really hear anything besides the water that dripped down from the ceilings. He slowly approached the door and pushed it opened all the way, his wolf eyes aiding him in seeing the dark corridors that had small patches of light thanks to the moonlight that shined down from above.
"Lans, is that you?" Isaac called, quietly making his way through the maze of corridors and keeping his ears trained for any sound that can indicate where Meilani was. He still couldn't hear her thoughts but he felt a sudden tug in a direction like she was down that way. Figuring it was because of their bond, Isaac followed the tug into a set of corridors that lead to a small opening that must lead to the front part of the church that Kate dragged Isaac and Meilani to.
However, Isaac froze in the middle of the corridor when he saw a Berserker perched in the small, darkened opening. Its low growls echoed off the stone walls of the church and it stared at Isaac like he was its next meal. He was stunned for a moment because the warm feeling that always seemed to blossom in his stomach when he was around Meilani raged inside of him. Her scent was even strong in the area but he couldn't see her anywhere.
Isaac turned to run in the other direction in the hopes that Meilani was down the other corridors he passed nearby but he was met with the Berserker once again. Now that he was close to the Berserker he realized how short it was and he was momentarily confused. The Berserkers were usually taller than him so where did this little one come from? The Berserker used Isaac's distracted moment to grab him by the front of his t-shirt and slam him into the stone walls on either side of them, raining down rubble from the force used. Isaac groaned in pain and tried to swipe his claws at the Berserker but he was easily blocked and slammed one more time before he was dropped to the ground.
Isaac winced as a white hot pain shot down his spine and his eyes widened when his fell onto the arm of the Berserker. There on its right arm was a tattoo of two thick bands . . . the same tattoo that Meilani had gotten to represent Stiles and Scott while Scott had gotten the wolf head for Meilani on his own bicep. His eyes flickered from the tattoo and up to the Berserker's face to see Meilani's brown eyes staring at him through the animal skull mask.
"Lans?"
"Isaac, you have to run! I'm trapped in here and I can't move my own body. She wants me to hurt you."
Isaac blinked as he heard Meilani's voice inside his head once again, the frightened tilt to her tone not matching the hard expression he currently received from the true alpha. He didn't get much time to answer as he was once again grabbed the front of his shirt and slammed down to the ground this time, Meilani holding him down with a loud, threatening growl. Small pants left Isaac's lips as he turned on his side to watch Meilani walk over to the archway and Kate enter the small area they were in.
"I'm going to have to do a better job of covering that up," Kate announced, running her fingers over Meilani's exposed tattoo. She circled Isaac with a taunting smirk as he glared up at her.
"What did you do to Meilani?" Isaac growled at her, his yellow eyes flashing dangerously at her.
"How," Kate corrected Isaac as she continued to walk around him, her heeled boots clicking against the stone flooring. "That's . . . that's the better story. You see, when I first got away from the Calaveras, I had no idea where to go. But something kept pulling me here, to the temple of Tezcatlipoca. His name means smoking mirror and this place is a temple of the smoking mirror. Obsidian. When I got here, I found the Berserkers waiting for me. They helped me survive. I didn't know quite why until just recently."
Kate scoffed and paused in front of Isaac with a chilling smile as the wolf inaudibly gulped at the sight. He really did not like where this story was going. "Until I decided to trust someone I never thought I'd trust. It was then that I found out I could not only control the Berserkers, but I could create them. They call me La Loba. The Bone Woman. We let you out because I needed to trust her loyalty. Did you know that Meilani became an Alpha without having to kill anyone? She's been through quite a lot without ever having to kill. I think it's time to change that and what better person to start with than her mate?"
Isaac scrambled back when he saw Meilani reach for the curve blade from the bone chest plate she wore, her thoughts no longer echoing around in his mind as she was probably too far gone now to even have her own thoughts. All he could hear now was the low, rumbling growls that came from Meilani and he continued to scramble away from her as she advanced on him, shaking his head. "Lans, come on! It's me. It's Isaac!"
Sadly for Isaac, his words went right over Meilani's head as she cornered him against a massive rock. She raised her hand that held the blade in it and arched her arm down, jamming the blade deep into Isaac's thigh as he howled in pain. He gasped out when Meilani not so gently ripped the blade back out and followed after Kate when she was done to go do whatever it is that Kate planned for her next.
Isaac groaned as he moved his leg, another shockwave of pain shoot up his thigh where Meilani had stabbed him. He wasn't even entirely sure how long it had been since Meilani left with Kate, but he could feel his head begin to hurt from the loss of blood. No matter what he did, the wound wouldn't heal and Isaac wondered if it was the weapon or him that made it difficult to heal.
"Come on, Isaac, don't be so weak."
Isaac startled at the sudden voice and his eyes snapped up to see his father perched on the rock across from him. He pressed himself back further into the rock behind him at the sight of the man that only brought him pain and misery, especially after Isaac's brother died in combat. It was like he blamed Isaac for his death and Isaac's mom leaving them, like he could control either one of things from not happening.
Mr. Lahey chuckled condescendingly at Isaac as he watched the boy struggle, dropping down from the rock he was sat on and walking closer to him. "You see, this is what I've always tried to tell you. You're just some weak, spineless little boy. No wonder a girl like Meilani doesn't give you a second glance. Why would she?"
"Shut up!" Isaac yelled, clutching his hands around his head and breathing heavily. He tried desperately to block out his father's words because he needed to focus on the healing instead. He needed to get better and get to Meilani so he can try to get her back. Isaac made a promise to both Stiles and himself that he would have made sure she was okay and he wasn't going back on that promise. Not ever.
"Even for a werewolf you're weak! You can't even heal a simple stab wound. How are you ever going to protect your friends if you can't even protect yourself? Maybe they would be better off without you. You're just a burden on them like you were to me!"
Isaac let out a thundering growl as his eyes flashed yellow and glared at his father, chest heaving in angry pants. In a blink, Mr. Lahey was gone and through the raging anger that coursed through him, Isaac could feel the stab wound in his leg begin to heal. His yellow eyes glanced down to his leg where the skin slowly begin to close over once again and he slowly got to his feet. He tested his weight on his leg to make sure it was okay enough to at least run around on and, besides a slight ache where the wound still healed, Isaac was okay.
Blowing out a breath and shifting his eyes back to its normal blue, Isaac ran in the direction he had originally been going in when he went to find Meilani. He knew he had to get outside of the church to find Meilani and with all the corridors, who knew how long it would take him to get out? He felt like he was in a corn maze and that every other corridor was a dead end, making him go in another direction.
After what felt like forever, Isaac could hear two voices shouting in the distance and he followed the voice to see a beam of flashlight up ahead. He rushed towards the light and smirked slightly when he scared Stiles and Scott, who spazzed and stumbled back from Isaac.
"For fucks sake," Stiles cursed, pressing a hand to his chest and glared at Isaac who didn't falter once. "Even after that minor attack, I'm still gonna ask . . . are you okay?"
"Aww, you do care about me," Isaac mused, trying to lighten the mood but faltered when Stiles just stared at him. "Look, it's not me you should be worrying about. It's Meilani. The Berserker? Yeah, it's her. Kate did it to her."
Stiles' heart stopped in his chest and his hands grew clammy at the thought of his girlfriend being one of those things. His friends were currently shooting and fighting against Meilani and they didn't even know it. "What are you talking about, Isaac?"
"Kate. She made her into one of them. I don't know how, but it's her. I saw the band tattoo when she attacked me. If they don't know it, they could kill her."
Scott stiffened as a thought crossed his mind, only one member of the pack not being here with them. One member of the pack that was important when it came to sensing the death around them like a beacon. "That's why Lydia isn't here. They won't know they're killing Meilani."
"Shit, we have to go," Isaac breathed, not even giving Scott or Stiles to get a word in. He pushed past the two and ran in the direction that the two boys came from. He perked his ears up for any sound of fight and followed the low clanging of swords and low growls when he was close enough. Leading Scott and Stiles through multiple different corridors and roundabouts, Isaac froze outside of what looked like the room that all the sermons were held in, the dusty altar up ahead where Liam and Chris fought off one of the Berserkers together.
Stiles' eyes widened when he saw Malia raise one of the weapons from the Berserkers in her hand above the small looking Berserker in Chris and Liam's grip. "Wait, wait, wait! Malia, stop!"
Isaac barreled past Stiles and gripped onto Malia's wrist before she could bring the weapon down on a subdued Meilani. "Malia, stop! It's Meilani. It's Meilani."
Liam's eyes snapped over to the mask that rested over Meilani's face and he gasped when he saw the face of his Alpha behind the animal mask. His moment of hesitation was long enough for Meilani to growl and shove Liam and Chris away from her, sending Liam sliding across the stone flooring.
Stiles glanced down at Liam who stopped at his feet and shifted his gaze over to Meilani who still growled, continuing to advance on Kira next who gripped onto her katana unsurely. He cursed under his breath and rushed over to Meilani, trying to stop her from killing her best friend. "Baby, it's me! You have to - " he was cut off when Meilani shot her hand forward, punching Stiles and sending him sliding across the floor.
With Liam being the next closest thing to her, he was lifted up for the front of his shirt and pressed against the stone pillar behind him by his throat. He struggled against the strong grip of his Alpha as he flailed his legs to try and get free, but it was no use. "Meilani. Meilani, Meilani, listen, listen, listen! You're not a monster! You're a werewolf! Like me. You're my Alpha and I'm your Beta."
Meilani's eyes were hard for a second longer before her eyes softened at the sight of her Beta. Her mind slowly but surely caught up to her human side and she quickly dropped Liam when she realized she was choking him. She stumbled back from the pack and whined as the animal side of her was stripped away and she ripped off the bone chest plate, the armor around her arms and a bright white light emitted from the skull mask when she ripped it off in half, revealing her Alpha side underneath. It left her in her thick strapped black tank-top and the bottom half of the Berserker outfit. Her Alpha eyes glowed dangerously at Peter, knowing he had something to do with this.
"You. The only one who knew as much as Argent about Berserkers. About the Nagual. You taught Kate. You helped her. All for power," Meilani accused darkly, her fists curling tightly at her sides.
"For my family's power," Peter barked back as if that made whatever he did any better. "To be rightfully inherited by me. Not usurped by some idiot teenage girl, so incorruptible, she won't even shed the blood of her enemies even when justified. You don't deserve your power." His eyes suddenly shifted to blue and his voice began to take on a deep, echoey type. "Not power like this."
Malia shifted and growled at her father, going to attack him for trying to kill her best friend but was overpowered instantly. She flew backwards and crashed into the crate on the side, breaking through it with a yelp of pain.
"Oh, sorry, sweetheart. We'll talk about this later."
Meilani shot her hand out when Kira went to attack Peter next, stopping her from moving where she was with her katana. She stepped forward to take a stance against Peter while her friends, brother and boyfriend watched with tense gazes. This was a fight between her and Peter, not her friends. Meilani had to do this fight with him alone.
"In case you forgot, Meilani, you were my Beta first. It was my bite that changed your life and my bite that can end it."
Meilani took another threatening step forward, showing no ounce of fear as she squared her shoulders. "Then, end it, Peter. I dare you to try, but I can assure you that you might end first before you even end me."
Peter let out an angry howl and leapt into the air to attack Meilani, the young Alpha leaping into the air next to crash into him and take him to the ground. She flipped back onto her feet once they both crashed down and took a slashing claw to Peter who jumped back to avoid getting cut. She swung her right arm around to try and punch him, but Peter blocked it and punched her in the stomach.
Meilani groaned and dodged his next attack, dropping to her knees to punch him in the side. He got another punch in and Meilani back flipped away from Peter to put a distance between them so she could get her bearings again. She effectively blocked both of Peter's attacks and then just narrowly missed the third punch he tried to throw her way.
"Come on, Meilani. Come on!"
"Oh, you're really asking for it," Meilani huffed at him, charing at him and clawing at his chest. She got one slash in before she was grabbed by the front of her shirt and thrown into the stone pillar to their right. She crashed to the ground along with the rubble from the broken parts of the pillar.
Peter didn't give Meilani a chance to get up as he grabbed her once again and threw her into the adjacent pillar. He grabbed her up once again pinned her to the pillar he just threw her out, holding her by back of her head. "Fight like an Alpha, Meilani. Come on!"
Meilani snarled and used the momentum that Peter used to spin her around towards the other pillar to leap up and push her feet off the pillar. She dropped back to the ground on the other side of Peter and flung him into the pillar instead. She jumped up and came down with her fist on Peter's chest over and over and over. Grabbing him by the front of his shirt, Meilani went to attack him once again, but Peter overpowered her and got all of the hits in.
Peter cracked his neck from side to side as he stood above Meilani who had dropped down to one of her knees, breathing heavily. "You want to defeat me? You're going to have to kill me!" He growled in her ear, throwing her across the room and sent her slamming into the top of the wall across the way.
Meilani whimpered in pain as she tried to move her aching limbs, freezing when she saw Liam move forward to attack Peter for hurting his Alpha. Before Meilani could open her mouth to stop Liam, Peter already had noticed Liam and grabbed the nearest pew, chucking it at the young Beta. Isaac was quick to grab Liam and cover him before he could get hit by the broken bits of wood as it rained down on them.
That was the end of Meilani's patience for Peter as she shoved back to her feet and charged at him, this time blocking every punch Peter threw her way. No matter what Peter threw at her, she blocked and dodged like she knew it was coming. She backed Peter up far enough until she could send an uppercut punch to this chin, sending him flying over the altar and crashing into the pile of crates against the wall behind it. She leapt up onto the altar, standing tall above him with a dark gaze.
"You were never an Alpha, Peter, but you were always a monster," Meilani snapped, leaping down from the altar and stabbing her claws into his cheek with brute force. She slowly stood back up to her feet when Peter didn't move and turned to face her friends who had all huddled together at the other end of the altar.
It was over. It was finally over.
The next morning came fairly quickly and the pack stood outside with Chris, Parrish and the Calaveras who had came to help fight off Kate and the Berserkers. Peter was passed out in the back of the van that Braeden drove down to Mexico and Chris handed off his weapon to one of the others to hold onto in case Peter were to wake up on their drive back to Beacon Hills. A trip that Chris wouldn't be making back with them.
"Okay, there's enough yellow wolfsbane in there to get Peter back to Beacon Hills, but be careful."
"You're really going with them?" Meilani asked, her eyes flickering between Chris and the Calaveras that stood behind him near their own cars.
"I made a deal with the Calaveras weeks ago. They'll leave you alone. All of you, but only if I help them catch Kate," Chris explained.
"What if you can't?" Kira spoke up next from where she leant against the front of the Church with Scott who had his arm wrapped around her.
Chris nodded determinedly as his shoulders squared. "I'll find her. Someone has to."
Meilani sighed as she watched Chris walk away with the Calaveras, hating that the man had only just gotten back from France and was already leaving again. She leant into Stiles' side when he walked up next to her, bringing her into him and pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. A small black and blue rested beneath his eye where Meilani had hit him. She still felt horrible any time she looked at him but he assured her it was okay. That he would just tell people that they should see the other guy.
She was just glad all her friends were safe and okay. That's all Meilani could ask for.
The last thing on Meilani's list was to explain to Finstock why Scott and Kira weren't at the game and why the whole pack missed practice with Isaac, Stiles, Scott and Liam. Meilani had an excuse for missing the game, but not the excuse for missing practice so she already knew Finstock wanted to crucify her for missing both since she was team captain. Well, she did have an excuse for missing the practice but Finstock couldn't know that real reason.
"Uh, then Stiles said that Scott and Kira were stuck in Mexico which is why they missed the game. Uh, so Meilani, Stiles, Isaac and I went down to Mexico to drive them back from Mexico and that's why we all missed practice. 'Cause . . . we were all in Mexico," Liam sheepishly explained to Finstock, taking a step back from the man when he glared at him.
"You took Kira on a date to Mexico?" Finstock asked Scott, his gaze leaving Liam so he could focus on Scott who shifted on his feet nervously.
"It was our first real date," Scott lamely replied, smiling innocently at Finstock.
"In Mexico?"
"They wanted to do something special, Coach," Isaac defended Scott quickly, placing a hand on the McCall male's shoulder. "He really went above and beyond for that girl."
Finstock hummed and nodded his head, crossing his arms across his chest. "Okay, I believe you."
"Really?" Liam asked with a beaming smile.
"Absolutely not," Finstock shot down, causing Liam's face to fall. "But I've had experiences south of the border that would knock the genitals off you. Still, let me be clear to all of you. This kid's the best talent I've seen in years. So Liam's your responsibility now. You are gonna stick together. You're gonna look out for each other and you're gonna have each other's backs. You got it?"
Meilani smiled brightly at Finstock and wrapped her arms around Liam's neck from behind him and hugged him close, leaning her head on top of his. Her Beta brought his hands up to hold onto her arms that wrapped around his neck and chuckled when she pulled him closer.
"We already do, Coach. Nothing will ever happen to Liam or anyone else while I'm around."
