¹ WELCOME TO AMERICAN HIGH
━
IT WAS A CRISP SUMMER MORNING as audrey kinch parked her bike in the school's parking lot.
it was september, and today, audrey had started her freshman year of highschool. though she talked herself through everything, she was still nervous.
she had waited for this year to come since she was in second grade.
but being here.. in the moment? it made her want to throw up and run back home. the school was filled with nothing but a few academics, delinquents and just a handful of kids who sat in between
shutting her eyes and sighed, the girl locked her bike before turning around and staring at the school's front entrance. the smell of fresh air and gas filling her senses.
the dark haired girl made her way up to the main doors, before walking to the bench near the cafeteria. she glanced around before seeing a familiar head of light brown curly hair. "lilith." she smiled, walking up to the girl.
"lilyyyyy" audrey smiled slightly, putting her hands on the girl's shoulder. "hiii," the light haired brunette spun around, curling her single index finger as a wave.
"where's marina?" she asked, as lilith pulled out her phone, "she's not here yet." she replied, taking out one of her earphones and handing it to audrey. "tv girl."
"sweet." audrey nodded, taking the earphone and placing it in her ear.
suddenly, two hands placed themselves on each of the girl's shoulders. "hellooo," marina smiled, her dark bangs covering her eyebrows.
"rina!" lilith smiled, hugging their friend. "damn okay audrey, no hug for me?" marina asked, looking at audrey. "some day." audrey chuckled, patting the girl's cheek.
"oh, alright then, lily here's a stick of gum for you." marina smirked, handing the girl a stick of mint gum. lilith smiled in response, "thank yewwwwww,"
"and here's some air in my palm for you audrey, hope your day is just full of sunshine." marina tilted her head, "wow all this over a hug." audrey rolled her eyes, grabbing the back of marina's beg before hugging her tight.
"i was kidding you doofus." audrey laughed as marina slid a stick of gum into her hands, "doofus." she whispered, as she pulled away; grazing audrey's jaw with her index finger.
"doofus rizz." lilith blurted as marina burst into laughter, "SHUT UP," marina laughed, slamming her hands onto her thighs.
"that one was a kneeslapper, fo sho." audrey said in a western accent while popping the gum into her mouth. "MMMMMM, mint, my favorite." she aggressively chewed the gum in lilith's face.
"okay, alright–" lily grinned, her hands on audrey's shoulders. before anyone could say anything more; the ringing of the bell replaced the noisy hallways signaling for people to start making their way to their classes.
audrey turned as she waved goodbye to the two girls, "see you two crackheads later."
━
as audrey walked to her first period class, she read her schedule thoroughly.
she had mixed biology. sophomores and freshman were both in the class.
but she wasn't advanced? so why was she taking mixed biology?
the girl shrugged it off as neared the entrance to her classroom, hoping to be early enough to catch a seat to herself in the back of the classroom.
as she piled into her class, she noticed bigger kids and children she knew from middle school alike. everyone was talking with someone else when she scanned the room.
every seat from at least the back three rows has been taken, making the girl sigh deeply.
she looked around to see a few kids in the front chatting, and others keeping to themselves. before her eyes landed on a person who looked like the thoughts running through her head were also running through his.
she stared at the boy, his raven curly hair, and his pale skin.. he looked like something out of a fairytale. though he hadn't been looking at her, but at his phone, she felt he had sensed her looking and moved into the class and away from the door.
quietly, she sat down in the fourth row from the back, on the edge of a stool as other kids loudly laughed and talked with their peers. she continued to think about the boy, and how nobody else was thinking about him.
after a few moments of enduring the painful sounds that the class as a whole decided to bring into play, excited for the first day, audrey decided to take out her earbuds, plugging them into her phone.
she scrolled through her playlists, finding one that would distract her through everything.
she rested her head on her hands, at least content with the fact that the teacher wasn't paying attention to much anything.
maybe american high wasn't as bad as she thought.
━
a few hours into the day, audrey was already tired of school. she wished it was still summer break so she could sleep in and paint.
she groaned as she prepared her backpack for the next class. the girl made her away towards her fourth period; math.
oh how she hated this class from the bottom of her heart. she felt as if every time she walked through the door into room one-o-four that she was on the verge of dissolving into a dust so fine that it could be considered an atom.
she felt like her eyeballs could pop out and her body could fizz onto the floor.
she hated math.
nonetheless, the girl unpacked her bag, getting out her notebook, pencil case and current read; frankenstein. she tossed her backpack into the bins behind her before sitting down at her seat near the window.
she flipped through her notebook for the homework she had completed the night prior, staring at the sheet of blank paper.
another homework assignment left unfinished due to her important self-taught italian lessons.
the girl exhaled sharply, closing her notebook and flipping through her book. she gently placed her bookmark on the end of her chable as her eyes skimmed the page for the last sentence she remembered reading.
as ms. gallen–audrey's algebra one math teacher–started to write down some examples of algebra one problems on the board, audrey glanced occasionally up from her pages to write down the problems, and then the answers once the teacher had written them down as well.
she looked out through the window, resting her cheek on her palm as she stared at the grassy fields outside.
she felt so sleepy before she felt a familiar feeling take over her stomach. suddenly, the girl wished she had eaten something during their first break.
she rolled her eyes, crossing her arms over her stomach in hopes to hide the noise from anybody. she found it so embarrassing to have something like this happen in school.
the girl forced herself awake throughout the entire class; wishing she had caught more sleep.
well, she did have an advantage since last year. her high school started a half hour after her middle school, so she was able to sleep an extra half hour more.
but according to her it meant being able to stay up an extra half hour more.
she propped her crossed arms up on her tabletop before burying her head into her arms.
eventually after trying to fight her heavy eyes, audrey gave in; letting her lids close over her eyes.
━
the bell rang sharply; meaning school was out, which meant phones.
as audrey glumly walked out of her math class, she saw all the kids around her gather into their groups of friends and pull out their small devices.
she sighed, making her way over to the front gate, where she would meet her friends.
audrey strolled through the halls, which had emptied faster than they had been filled hours before. she kicked stray leaves here and there as she slowly and tiredly made her way to the front.
"so i was thinking what if we just–audrey!" lilith smiled, turning to audrey, marina following. "what took you so long?" marina asked, fixing audrey's hair out of her eyes.
"french class is boring me half to death; they're starting from the beginning." audrey explained, rolling her eyes.
"well duh, not everyone spent two years before highschool learning french." lilith said, lightly punching audrey's shoulder.
"okay but i know this stuff already! why can't they just put me into advanced or something?" audrey shook her head, walking past the two girls.
"maybe you should take the opportunity to just ace the class since you know it already." marina shrugged, walking next to the girl.
"well that's why i chose french in my course request last year, rina." audrey mumbled, toying around with a keychain on lilith's backpack in front of her.
"hm, well then just live with it until you get your pluses." marina replied, "anyway, lily my dad's won't be here until later so you guys wanna go to the mall?" marina asked the two, nodding her head to the mall that was a block in front of their school.
"can't my dad doesn't want me 'going anywhere friends without going home first.'" audrey mocked, annoyed. marina looked over at lilith, who tilted her head to the side, "sure."
"okay then, see you lovely ladies later." audrey winked, as she started to walk towards her bike in the lot in front of them.
━
miles fairchild sighed as he walked out of the halls, upset over the fact that he had lost something so precious to him.
frustrated, the boy shoved past multiple people before making his way to the front gate.
he glanced around before walking past more people and shoving his way past more people trying to make it across the parking lot.
the raven haired boy searched the parking lot for a familiar yellow car, unable to find the bright color through all the subtle ones.
annoyed, he gave up making his way towards the concrete sidewalk.
"hey miles!" someone shouted, causing him to crinkle his face in confusion, who the hell was this and what the hell did they want.
he turned around to be met with some boys on the bus who were from his tenth grade math class, "nice afro, white boy!" someone yelled, earning laughs from more people on the large mobile.
"bet your rich money can't buy you a better perm!" another guy laughed hard, slamming his fist into the bus multiple times.
"dude, shut up he transferred here 'cause he beat up some kid at his old school." someone muttered, causing the bus to quiet down as it got ready to drive away.
pissed anyway, miles ignored them, he was too far away from them to do anything. so instead he found himself away from the situation even more livid than before.
he walked off the school's property as he made his way towards the small plaza near the school. the young boy contemplated going to the mall before he realized it was probably just more people and more boredom.
miles thought long and hard over his guitar pick. the fifty dollar one that his mother had bought him for his twelfth birthday.
the last birthday he spent with her before she died.
the boy fought tears as he stared at one foot being placed in front of the other while he walked towards the lot full of stores and restaurants.
after taking off his bag and setting it down next to him, miles collapsed on the bench that was placed against starbucks.
"fucking hell." he whispered into his palms, "one pick. one damn pick and you can't even save that of her." he angrily muttered, hot tears threatening to spill out of his eyes.
sighing, he sat up straight before looking up at the clear sky. he tugged on his sweater, wiping any tears that were on his pale hands.
he shook his head quietly, looking down at his dark colored converse. he glanced at his bag before a familiar yellow vehicle made it's way into the parking lot.
"i thought you were at school." kate said to the boy as she rolled down her window, "well you thought wrong." he shot back, yanking the car door open as he tossed his bag into the car.
the boy slammed the door shut, not bothering to talk as he stared hopelessly out of the window.
