⁵ NEW FEELINGS AND GREETINGS
━
AUDREY SAT AT HER DESK, staring out of the window that looked the corner of her street where lakewood drive and jones avenue conjoined.
she glanced back at all the notes that had been sprawled over her desk, before looking back at her computer which sat on her bed across from her desk, illuminating the other half of her room.
she sighed, thinking of all the letters. it had been a month and a half since high school started and she already had a secret admirer.
she couldn't think of anybody who would give her something so.. interesting.
most people at american high would make fun of someone for doing something like that, and anyone receiving it would just laugh it off and forget.
so why did she feel like this was special?
the last time she'd received a note at her locker was in eighth grade, and back then she was sure it had to have been some sort of prank.
she tried to think of this situation the same way as well, however she was finding it difficult to tie it into that feeling and keep it that way. audrey was the type of person to overthink a lot of minor assets of a simple situation.
it's what stressed her out more than anything.
"audrey, i'm not going to call you again!" her mother shouted, across the house. "alright, alright!" she yelled back, getting out of her seat and shutting the window.
━
the girl sat at her desk, sighing as she lifted her head from the paper she'd been working on.
she had written a letter to the secret admirer.
"jeez, this is so stupid." she muttered, staring down at her paper. it had asked for him to reveal himself in more of an essay-way than a poetic one.
"fuck this," she muttered, crumpling the paper and tossing it into the trash across the room, actually making it into the small bin; making her smile.
she threw her head back, staring at the ceiling before taking off her pants and peeling her shirt from her torso, changing into a more comfortable oversized t-shirt. tiredly, she crawled into bed.
she was ready for sleep, but sleep wasn't ready for her just yet.
the only thing that was ready for her, was her secret admirer.
but she wanted to know more about them through their poems, not more about herself. slowly thoughts popped up in her head, consuming her exhausted brain before she slowly shut her eyes, drifting off into an interesting stage of sleep.
tomorrow would hopefully be a much less confusing day.
━
as audrey opened her locker, she was surprised to find that there was no letter. she set down her book bag inside the small metal compartment, getting out some tape and taping her own envelope to the locker's exterior.
she smiled when she saw how she had written 'for -♡' using the signature they usually used. quietly, she took her bag out, re packing it with the few notebooks and textbooks she would need for the day, shutting the locker and leaving.
━
miles stood from the boys bathroom, staring at the letter that had been taped to her locker. he felt like punching something.
who the fuck had the audacity to give her letters, when it had been his idea. he looked across the halls, before pushing himself off the door frame of the boys bathroom.
the stressed boy walked across the field, swiftly moving past people who crowded the way in front of her locker. he looked around before snatching the letter and quickly shoving the small paper in his pocket.
━
"what do you mean you just left it there for them to find?!" marina asked, her jaw hung agape as she listened to audrey, "i mean i left the letter for the person writing me letters to find." audrey shrugged, flipping through the pages of her notebook.
"are you kidding! you could've used that to find out who it was!" marina exclaimed, her hands spread out in front of her before she slammed them on her face. "audreyyyyghhhh" marina groaned, "okay alright, we can go check if it makes you feel better." lilith offered.
━
the girls sat down on the grass field seeing that the letter was still stuck to her locker, thankfully whoever it was meant for didn't take it.
"we've been here foreverrrr," lilith sighed, laying down in marina's lap; "well i wanna see who this guy is." she replied in a determined yet mischievous tone.
"cool, i don't feel like laying out in the sun." audrey whined, holding her book above her head, shielding the sun from her eyes. "me neither," lilith laughed, moving closer to audrey using her book's shade as well.
"y'all my man talked to me todayyy," lilith sang, "which one?" marina asked, as she glared at audrey's locker. "patrickkkk," lilith replied, looking up at marina, who whipped her head back at the girl.
"patrick star." the girl laughed at the lighter brunette who lay next to her, "shut up!" she smacked marina's arm, her cheeks flushed a light red. "she's not wrong." audrey laughed, "oh you don't even start." lilith said, pointing a finger at audrey as she sat up.
just as lilith was about to get up and stretch she stared at the locker, breaking through her previous thoughts, "dude, it's gone!" she yelled, shoving marina out of the way, "fuck you mean it's gone?!" marina yelled as she looked up at the locker. "ugh!" the dark haired girl scoffed.
"look, whoever it was made for clearly got it." audrey shrugged, sitting up. "i get the feeling you know, who's sending you these." marina sighed, staring at audrey. "no clue, but i love that you think that." she winked back at marina.
"whatever. i give up. this guy's clearly a professional or some one who's super stealthy." marina mocked, throwing her hands up as she shimmied her shoulder. "sure, sure." audrey rolled her eyes, "just wait until he confesses." audrey said with wide eyes.
"like you'd say yes." marina laughed aloud, "unless he has curly hair." lilith added, wrapping her arms around both the girl's necks. "oh, yup and that." audrey laughed.

miles sat in his sixth period band classroom, his drums in front of him as he stared at the white envelope in his hands.
his thoughts tore him apart; he either wanted to shred it completely or open it and see who the person was.
but why? he asked himself, why had he become so.. possessive.
especially over someone he doesn't even talk to, a girl at that. the only person he had ever been this protective over was flora, and she was his little sister. so why did audrey matter so much to him when she'd barely ever even spoken to him?
he couldn't tell if it was because she had indirectly returned his guitar pick to him, or if it was for some other reason.
was it because he thought she looked pretty? was it because she dressed the way she did, or her laugh sounded like the rain when it's light and makes you drift off to sleep?
he really couldn't tell.
finally, he got up, walking up to the trash before crumpling the letter up and throwing it away. as he sat down, the only thought that consumed his head was why someone else was writing a letter to her.
he shrugged himself out of his brain, grabbing his drum sticks and shaking his leg as he tried to think of any beat to play to distract himself.
he had to act sooner or later, otherwise who ever else was trying to write to her was going to do instead.
━
audrey parked her bike in front of the starbucks, angling the two wheel mobile in a way she could see it from the table she usually sat at while doing school work.
she sighed, taking the key out from the bike's lock, putting it in her pocket as she opened the door to the cafe and shrugged off her bag.
pursing her lips, audrey wished she didn't have to tackle the worse subject first, but she realized it would be better to get math out of the way before moving on to her favorite subjects.
the girl worked and worked, getting distracted from subject to subject over the course of two hours. she had finally finished her french worksheet and her history presentation, but she just needed to finish her math work, and do it right.
maybe i just need to take a break, she thought as she got up from her seat walking towards the bathroom. as she opened the door to the bathroom she caught sight of her reflection in the mirror; "just a break," she breathed.

the girl sat up, maybe i just need to take a break, she thought as sighed, getting up from her seat. she hesitantly walked towards the bathroom. as she opened the door to the bathroom she caught sight of her reflection in the mirror; "just a break," she breathed.
audrey out of the bathroom, closing the door behind her as she rubbed her cold hands together. she glanced at the table where she had left her stuff.
but to her surprise, someone was sitting at her table. "'scuze me, i'm sitting here.." she carefully spoke as she walked up to the table the raven haired boy sat at.
"i think i know that." he mumbles in response, gesturing to the textbook, notebook and backpack that were laid across the table.
"okay so then.. why are you here?" she asked, crossing her arms staring at the boy.
"you suck at math." he randomly said, staring at her math work, "okay, mr. 'stick my nose in peoples business' i think you've done enough of your bidding today, wanna leave now?" she retorts impatiently. the boy stared at audrey, who looked quite irritated.
"want a tutor?" he asked, glancing from the books back to the girl, who stood there, bewildered by the boy's random comments towards her. "i don't need one." she assured, brushing off her jeans before sitting down.
"correction, you can't pay for one." he intervened, pointing a finger at her, "okay let me ask you this," she sighed, leaning forward. "do you get paid to be this much of a dick?"
"funny, no, and i'll tutor you for free if you want." he replied, shrugging at the girl who sat across from him. her jaw hung low and an eyebrow slightly raised.
"what's in it for you?" she prodded, suspicious of his intentions. tutoring? for free? it was too good to be true.
"not much. i guess i just get to make friends with people." he added, further confusing the girl in front of him. "yeah I'm sure you have tons of friends..?"
"miles," he said, leaning back a bit, as the girl eyed him carefully. she knew she'd seen him in the office she just chose not to bring the awkward moment up. "audrey." she quickly added.
"how old even are you?" she asked, leaning back onto the wall behind her. "i'm sixteen." he replied, "i go to american high too." he briefly explained, audrey nodded in response.
"you?" he asked, knowing she was either fourteen or fifteen since she was a freshman. "fifteen," she mumbled in response. "cool." he replied, earning a sigh from the girl,
"alright, audrey, you're doing the variables wrong." miles nodded to the paper in front of the girl.
"oh my god," she groaned, setting her head down on the table.
"here, it's not that hard." miles said, scooting closer to her and looking at her paper.
"that's what she said." audrey mumbled, a small smile making its way onto her face. miles ignored his urge to smile in response, realizing she'd spoke his intrusive thoughts.
"dude, this is basic review." miles laughed, looking at the paper, "dude, you're also a grade higher than me." she rolled her eyes at his comment.
"doesn't really change my understanding of it." he turned to her, "i can't tutor you if you're gonna complain the whole time." miles plainly said as his eyes skimmed the page.
"you know what, fine. let's try this, an absolute stranger teaching me for free." audrey said, summarizing the two teens' recent interaction, "totally unsuspicious, stress-free." she sighed, as miles shrugged a bit.
"sure."
