( MADELAINE PRINCE )

PART 1

✧･ﾟ: *✧･ﾟ:*𝐌𝐀𝐃𝐄𝐋𝐀𝐈𝐍𝐄 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐀𝐍𝐍𝐎𝐘𝐄𝐃. that's the only way she could describe how she felt at that moment, batman had decided that if she wouldn't go to gotham academy she'd at least have to attend keystone high until her place at happy harbor high school was confirmed. she twisted the bracelet her mother had given her nervously as she waited outside of her classroom. she ignored the glances some people sent her and focused on straightening her black pencil skirt and purple turtleneck.

the door in front of her opened and a man around 40 gestured for her to walk in, the girl following and coming face to face with a class of around 25 other people around her age. as she glanced around the class she saw the familiar head of red hair belonging to wally west.

"welcome, class, to the first day of sophomore year. we have a new student joining us today, madelaine prince. be nice" she didn't expect for him to say anything more and started to head for the back of the class in a seat two away from wally's.

"madelaine?" the redhead muttered to himself as he lifted his head to see the girl sitting down in her seat and sinking down avoiding the curious eyes. the boy felt his spirits lift slightly realising that he now went to school with mystique.

the class wasn't as bad as madelaine had expected, although the fact that she knew the answer to every question asked did help her. diana had made sure she was educated when she lived with her, she made sure the girl would be prepared for the real world.

madelaine had left the class before wally could go and speak to her and the redhead now searched the halls for her, when he did though he hesitated on going up to her as she stood leaning against a locker speaking to a football player.

the boys arm was above her head as he leaned in to speak to her, however her arms were folded to create some space between them. she nodded along to what the boy was saying before she noticed wally standing behind him and starting to smile.

"chat to you later, just saw my friend" she told the boy in front of her patting his chest and sliding out from under his arm. she approached the boy with a large smile and stopped when she was a few feet in front of him.

"didn't know you went here" wally said with a small chuckle as he held the back of his neck, staring at the girl intently.

"batman made me start" she said softly as she leaned in a bit so he could hear her, "and anyway i might be starting happy harbor soon" she added which made wally frown a bit. "but i seem to  have found a reason to stay here" it was a habit to flirt with the boy she told herself.

wally smiled once again before gaining a smirk "like me that much already, babe?" he asked as he walked closer to the girl breaking any space between them.

she smiled to herself before pretending to think "i'll let you know when i figure that out" and walking away from the boy to her next lesson. wally staring at the spot she once stood and grinning to himself like an idiot.

a redheaded girl who stood at the lockers nearby watched the two closely and began to make her way towards madelaine, grabbing the dark haired girls hand stopping her in her tracks. madelaine turning to come face to face with a girl who looked oddly similar to her.

"sorry" the redhead apologised with a small chuckle not pulling her hand back. "i just noticed you were new, i joined today as well" madelaine just smiled with tight lips finding it odd how alike they looked.

"mary" she introduced as she stuck her hand out to shake, a hint of silver shining through the blue sweater the girl wore. madelaine shook the girls hand feeling a small spark of electricity shoot through her body but staying still not wanting to come off weird.

"madelaine. i'm sorry but do i know you from somewhere?" she asked as she tilted her head staring closely at the girl, the only things different from her own face being the redheads freckles and green eyes.

mary pulled her hand back quickly with an awkward laugh beginning to rub her hand up her arm "no, maybe i look familiar?" the girl offered, a small hint of sadness in her tone.

"maybe..." madelaine trailed off skimming her memory but nothing showed up, she only knew three redheads, wally, m'gann and barbara gordon.

mary stared at the girl for a few seconds longer before grabbing the girls wrist lifting it higher "i like your bracelet!" she complimented as madelaine slightly pulled her hand back slowly considering the girls closeness.

"thanks, my mum gave it to me" madelaine said as she smiled to herself and began twisting the bracelet around her wrist and then nodding at mary's wrist knowing there was a bracelet under her shirt as well "yours aswell"

mary pulled her hand behind her back with a small smile at madelaine "gift from my mum" she told her as she nodded her head and then looked down at the ground smiling sadly "i never really knew her, or my dad actually. he died before i was born" the girls words making her frown.

madelaine not knowing what to say placed a hand on the girl in front of her's shoulder, diana had raised her to be nice to everyone she met and to sympathise with people. the girls moment was cut short as wally suddenly joined madelaine's side, water dripping off him.

"i hate this school" the boy muttered bringing mary's attention to him, the redhead girl taking a step back and looking between madelaine and wally with slightly wide eyes before smiling awkwardly.

"what happened?" madelaine asked as she let out a small laugh noticing the boys pants were wet making it look like he'd wet himself.

wally trying to wipe the water off his clothes turnt to look at her with a a frustrated frown "stupid bubbler" he said before looking to mary "who's this?" and then looking at madelaine and then mary again, him noticing the resemblance.

"wally meet mary.." the girl trailed off not remembering getting a last name from her "what did you say your last name was again?"

mary's eyes widened as she took a few seconds to reply "brekker?" she answered as if she wasn't so sure herself "mary brekker" she repeated sticking a hand out to wally, which the boy shook in return.

"well sorry, mary but me and mads here have to get going" the redheaded boy said making madelaine furrow her eyebrows before turning to the boy and seeing the look he was giving her.

"we do? we do!" she said as she turnt to mary and smiled before beginning to drag wally out of the school, the two now being allowed to go to happy harbor and join in on the beach day.

wally zoomed them to his house so he could get his swimming trunks on and and stuff for the before taking him and madelaine back to the tower, the girls things were there so she'd have to change once home.

recognize: kid flash; b-0-3, lady mystique; b-0-4

as the two appear in the zeta tube, wally carrying all the necessities for a day at the beach "the wall-man is here! " he calls out, running in his flip flops. "let's get this party star-uhn!" he's cut off as he trips on the pole of his umbrella, falling flat on his face. the beach ball going bouncing into the main room just past an angry batman as he watches wally skid towards them. lifting his head he sees them dressed for a mission. "...ted." he finishes weakly.

all the other protogés look to him with knowing smiles and hold no remorse at him making a fool of himself, even madelaine smiling from her spot at his idiocy.

madelaine finally walking out of her tube behind the boy staring at the team and the heroes oddly before helping wally up by grabbing his hand "what's going on?"

"wall-man, huh?" a new voice asks, aqualad stepping aside so wally can see her. decked out in green with an arrow on her chest and a bow in hand, just like green arrow. the colours accenting her slightly darker skin tone, brown eyes, and bright blonde hair. "i love the uniform. what exactly are your powers?"

madelaine looking at the girl with confused eyes before looking at the team behind her waiting for an explanation, trying to ignore the flirting tone the blonde had when speaking to wally.

wally ignores her question as he steps up beside madelaine "uh, who's this?" he asks Kaldur, gesturing to her.

"artemis, your new teammate." she says almost teasingly, before turning to madelaine keeping her same teasing look "lady mystique" she nods as a hello.

"hey..." madelaine says unsurely before taking a step closer to wally, as if claiming her territory. sure her and wally were nothing more than friends but she was already used to his constant flirting with m'gann and her and didn't think she'd like someone else to be added to that list.

"kid flash. never heard of you." wally continues in the same insultingly teasing tone as artemis before glancing at madelaine confused on why she was so close.

green arrow steps up. "um, she's my new protogé" the man says confusing madelaine as roy was the only protégé he had.

wally's eyes go wide. "wha-what happened to your old one?" he questions, clearly worried, but can't ask further as the zeta-Tubes behind him are put in use answering his question

"well for starters, he doesn't go by speedy anymore." roy states, walking out of the zeta tube. "call me red arrow." the four original protogé are both relieved and tensed to see him in the mountain, but it's madelaine who reacts the fastest.

"now this, is a look i like" the girl spoke out loud making roy smirk to himself knowingly and causing wally to look at her and then roy slightly annoyed.

"roy. you look-" green arrow begins, but red arrow cuts him off as he walks to the centre of training circle.

"-replaceable." he nearly growls, his gaze zeroed in on the blonde girl in the centre.

"it's not like that." green arrow tries. "you told me you were going solo." he tries finding an excuse

"so why waste time finding a sub?" roy rhetorically questions angrily. "can she even use that bow?"

artemis steps up to defend herself. "yes, she can." she says, almost chipper sounding as she gets right in roy's face. 

"who are you?" wally finally questions loudly as he throws his arms up in the air annoyed

"i'm his niece." artemis says at the same time green arrow says "she's my niece." 

this response gets a smirk to grow on robin's face. "another niece?" he questions, knowingly making madelaine whack his arm

"but she is not your replacement." kaldur assures, speaking to roy stepping up as roy actually turns to look at him. "we have always wanted you on the team, and we have no quota on archers."

from his left wally pipes up, cheery once more. "and if we did, you know who we'd pick." his words making madelaine frown considering his childishness. 

artemis steps up once more "whatever, baywatch, i'm here to stay." the girls proximity to the redhead making madelaine roll her eyes and walk away to stand besides kaldur.

roy immediately walks away from artemis to stand beside madelaine. kaldur speaks up as roy stops walking  "you came to us for a reason."

"yeah, a reason named dr. serling roquette." roy admits, looking to robin who tenses immediately at the name.

then smiling he pulls up the data on his hologlove "nanorobotics genius and claytronics expert at royal university in star city- vanished two weeks ago." he states as screens around the whole circle come up.

"abducted two weeks ago by the league of shadows ." roy corrects.

robin's joy shows through on his face. "whoa. you want us to rescue her from the Shadows?" he asks as he, wally, and m'gann all step up. madelaine however only stared at roy knowing he would've already gotten it done if he brought it up.

"hard-core." wally agrees, offering a fist to robin, which the boy wonder hits on top, then underneath, then on top again.

roy replies tensely. "i already rescued her." walking towards the lined up holo-screens. "only one problem." pulling out a small grey box which brings up a larger screen in front of the ones robin put up. "the shadows had already coerced her into a weapon," glancing at the screen to make sure the data's up. "doc calls it the fog, comprised of millions of microscopic robots, nanotech infiltrators, capable of disintegrating anything in their path- concrete, steel, flesh, bone.- but it's true purpose isn't mere destruction. it's theft. the infiltrators eat and story raw data from any computer system and deliver the stolen data to the shadows."

roy stops speaking as he lets the horrible information fully sink in. "providing them access to weapons, strategic defense, cutting edge science and tech." he finishes.

"perfect for extortion, manipulation, and power broking." artemis picks up, decidedly ignoring the angry look from wally and the knowing look from robin "yeah. sounds like the shadows."

"like you know anything about the shadows." wally scoffs, a smirk falling onto his face, but what he doesn't expect is for her to smile tauntingly at him. his smirk falls and he looks confused before finally shouting out what's on his mind. "who are you?!"

madelaine looking between the two and feeling a sense of bitterness in her throat but choosing to ignore it, although the way she was clenching her fist grabbing superboy and kaldur's attention.

roy deliberately ignores the spat. "roquette's working on a virus to render the fog inert."

"but if the shadows know she can do that..." robin begins, quietly.

roy agrees with him instantly. "they'll target her. right now, she's off the grid." the picture changes again. "i stashed at her the local high school's computer lab."

"you left her alone?" green arrow questions, shocked.

"she's safe enough for now." roy rebuttals in annoyance

"then let's you and I keep her that way." green arrow offers stepping closer to the young man he mentored. madelaine knew this wasn't going to end well and found herself joining green arrow's side.

"you and i?" roy questions, sounding both angry and surprised. "don't you want to take your new protogé?"

before green arrow can say anything, batman places a dark hand on his shoulder stopping the blonde in his tracks. he glances back at the dark knight before turning back to roy "you brought this to the team. it's their mission, which means it's her's now, too." green arrow says calmly

roy scoffs. "then my job's done." he says beginning to walk back towards the zeta-tubes before madelaine reaches out to grab his hand.

"come on, roy. stay" the girl encourages as she turns to look at her team and then back at the boy. artemis furrowed her eyebrows at the girls intimacy with the boy and then glanced at kid flash not speaking up.

"i've told you this already, i won't let them dictate my life anymore" and with that he ripped his hand from her grip and left.

recognize: speedy-

"that's red arrow, b06. update." roy corrects. the zeta tube beeps, recognizing the update, and transporting him away.

behind his turned back wally turns to artemis with a glare, m'gann looks over as well, but she's more confused than confrontational. artemis looks away from the gingers' looks.

"everyone online?" m'gann asks through her mind as madelaine sits on the desk besides artemis as dr. roquette was working.

"ohh. this is weird" artemis half groans, grabbing her head slightly. madelaine sending her a sympathetic smile and placing a hand on the girls shoulder.

"and distracting." dr. roquette's voice cuts in as she continues to code quickly. "coding a distributive algorithm virus on a kiddie computer with ram than a wristwatch is hard enough." she stops typing and starts moving her body as if she were speaking aloud. "now I have to hear teen-think in my skull?" she grips her head with annoyance and perceived pain from a headache she's bound to get.

robin was looking out on of the partially opened blind of the same window row, hiding behind a pillar, aqualad standing by the windows looking out and wally who was sat on the window ledge eating a granola bar asks "lady, do you always complain when someone tries to help you?"

"pot, kettle." artemis offers "have you met?" artemis says looking between wally and dr. roquette.

wally immediately becomes defensive. "hey. hey, i do not need attitude from the newbie who drove red arrow off the team." madelaine frowning at his words and how he was attacking artemis.

artemis stands instantly and points directly at him "hat is so not on me." behind her madelaine speaks up in annoyance

"both of you, shut it" she ordered the two before they both turned to look at her, artemis with an eyebrow raised and wally exasperated.

"she started it." he defends himself childishly making madelaine wonder why she liked the boy again. the thought suddenly making her still. did she like wally?

after a few seconds of silence passed artemis turns to madelaine "what's going on between you and red arrow?" she asks as wally starts choking on his granola bar a bit and robin smirks to himself.

madelaine's eyes widen as her and wally simultaneously say "nothing!" their answers making them turn to look at eachother before madelaine continues "anymore. we're so done with that" she tells the blonde before artemis nods and smirks to herself knowingly.

"how about I just help superboy and miss martian patrol the perimeter?" she offers, already walking away from her spot by the doctor.

"good idea." aqualad agrees, his tone formal as ever but there's a noted edge of stress to his simple words.

"you might cut her some slack. it was her arrow that saved your butt against amazo." robin points out, smirking at the last tad bit of knowledge.

kid flash's eyes go wide "what? no!" he denies instantly "that was speedy's- i mean, red arrow's... arrow. right?" he tries, giving the robin a small smile as if that would change his answer.

"now that i think about it..." madelaine starts, the engravings and design of the arrow not as similar to roy's compared to artemis'.

wally manages to huff in his head. "well, still not giving her the satisfaction." he gripes making madelaine smile to herself knowing artemis can still hear him.

walking out of the building artemis is quick to remind him that's ineffective "you know, I can still hear you!" she says making wally grip his head and groans aloud

"i couldn't get the justice league." roquette grumbles to herself, gripping the bridge of her nose before going back to coding.

"the virus won't be of much use if we cannot find the weapon." aqualad surmises, stepping up to stand behind the doctor. "can you track it?"

"my utility fog is not a weapon." she quickly defends, turning towards aqualad. "it's science, brilliant science, and of course i can track it, but i'd have to go online." she turns back to the computer but doesn't continue coding. "might as well rent a billboard with this address and ＂assassinate me" written in neon "placing her head on the fingertips of her left hand.

robin and superboy were gone and wally had gone out to patrol the halls over fifteen minutes ago but madelaine was beginning to worry as he hadn't reported anything back.

the door only creaks slightly as it opens, but it is only open a very small amount before a shuriken comes whizzing towards the back of roquette's head but aqualad takes the hit for her. the doctor goes to stand, but madelaine sees movement. "doctor, get down." she calls out.

roquette looks to the source of the shuriken, only to see the cheshire grin. her eyes widen and two more shuriken's fly towards her, which aqualad take to the outside of his right arm as he knocks the doctor to the floor.

madelaine joins the boys side as she tries to cover the doctor on the floor by using her body as a shield

the ravenette- cheshire- pushes the door fully open, running behind the computer desks. "hmm." she muses, twin sais held in a reverse grip as she runs towards the doctor, the goddess and atlantean "who does the quick redhead belong to here?" the chesire asks making madelaine's eyebrows furrow.

"so he's yours. he's taken a little swim, might want to go and play baywatch" the girl says before aqualad looks to madelaine and gesturing for the girl to go, madelaine rushing past the chesire before she could touch her and making her way to the pool

"she won't make it in time and that had to have hurt" the woman said gesturing to the aqualad's arm

aqualad pulls out the last shuriken out of his arm, his right tattoo glowing brightly. "atlantean skin is quite dense." he states, as he pulls out his water-bearers to form dual swords. Just in time to block her sais.

"and my shuriken are quite poisoned." she says, slashing at his stomach, then dodging under his strike at her head, then striking towards his arm which he blocks once more and pushes her away kicking her in the chest. she flips through the hit, landing silent and confident in a crouch on a computer table.

"m'gann, artemis, we are under attack in the computer lab. " aqualad calls out which madelaine hears as she tries to find out which way the pool is. she's able to hear  m'gann and artemis storm through the double doors, artemis knocking an arrow as she runs towards the computer lab. "we're on our way." the archer assures the boy.

however m'gann stops short, her eyes going wide before flying back to the last intersecting hallway she and artemis passed.

madelaine finally finds the pool and looks into it to see wally laying at the bottom unconscious, the girl doesn't think as she launches herself in to the pool and beginning to swim to the bottom hoping she's not too late. she makes it to the boy and places her arms under his and trying to drag his body up but due to his weight she begins to struggle, she keeps pulling but opens her mouth slightly as water begins to flood into her throat. the olympian girl tightening her grip on the boy before feeling something dragging her and wally up.

m'gann stands at the edge of the pool before dropping her and wally on the side of the pool, the martian running to their side as madelaine gasps spitting the water out before turning to look at an unconscious wally. the girl began to place her lips on top of wally's giving him mouth to mouth as m'gann looked on worriedly.

madelaine was beginning to worry it didn't work before wally shot up causing her to shoot back and for wally to start coughing the water up. the boy not having time to process anything as madelaine threw her arms around him pulling him close.

wally who was still trying to understand what was going on hugging her back, their wet clothes sticking together and making them both internally cringe. "i thought you were dead" madelaine breathed out raggedly as she tried regaining her breath, smiling widely at the boy.

"it's going to take a bit more than some water to kill the wall-man" he laughs making m'gann smile at the two in front of her. "now let's go, the others need us" the boy says remembering what was going on and pulling madelaine and himself up. the three taking off to the computer room.

madelaine, m'gann and wally  enter the door and find doctor roquette standing in stunned shock as arrow halves fall at her feet. artemis pauses upon seeing them which is what prompts cheshire to look as well now finding herself outnumbered five to one.

"maybe a little too interesting." she admits as artemis knocks another arrow. which chesire deflects before dropping a flash grenade and disappearing.

madelaine runs through the smoke, hitting nothing and stumbling right into artemis' arms. both girls bumping foreheads. madelaine holding her forehead before beginning to walk backwards hitting wally's chest.

the boy looks down to madelaine who he was supporting by holding her elbows before looking to the now empty space. "gone." he grunts.

"she's getting away! you're letting her get away!" roquette yells at aqualad causing the whole teams annoyance to grow.

"this was all your fault. you were on the perimeter! how'd that shadow get in?" wally demands to artemis, who boldly begins to walk in front of him and madelaine.

"it's not her fault" madelaine says calmly, turning to look wally in the eyes considering their close proximity. "I was meant to be in here with aqualad" 

"you came to save me!" he retaliates. "besides i can't be mad at you." his tone gone flirtatious and almost sweet as he changes who he's defending. "you gave me mouth-to-mouth." he says through his brain/

madelaine's eyes go widen, remembering that they were all still connected "we heard that!" artemis snaps angrily, while even aqualad began to seem annoyed.

wally drops his head onto madelaine's shoulder "dang it!" he gripes giving m'gann and artemis the ability to talk without him separating them.

she gives the newest member a genuine smile. "i didn't do half as well in my first battle," she offers, even placing her hand on artemis' shoulder in an attempt to increase her comfort by offering it physically. 

"same, i nearly let all the boys die" madelaine speaks up turning to wally and then aqualad, thinking back to their first time all acting as a team.

"and I know you can't have been green arrow's sidekick for very long." m'gann adds as she smiles at madelaine then both girls smile at artemis.

before the blonde can respond aqualad cuts in "focus, everyone." though out of the three m'gann seems the most annoyed with the interruption "the shadows will be back."

the radio beeps. "robin to aqualad." it catches the atlantean's attention immediately, madelaine turning so her body now faced wally's and grabbing the boys hand.

"lay off on her" she tells the boy keeping her voice low as she glances back to artemis who stood defensively but a small hint of a frown on her lips "she means well" and with that she walked over to m'gann's side.

aqualad finishes his conversation with robin and turns to look at the unhurt doctor roquette. "rescan for that fog. find it." then he glances back at the team once more. "we're moving the doctor."
