𝐯𝐢𝐢. How to write Carlisle Cullen
I will state my opinion and thoughts about Carlisle first before I go and advice on how to write to him so you can get to know him better.
To be honest, I don't know how I can not make this chapter religious since Carlisle's character is really based on religion. There's rumors or speculations that Smeyer based Carlisle's character on the founder of Mormonism and Latter Day Saint movement, Joseph Smith. They are eerily similar like twins, really.
That it does make it believable that Joseph's representative in Twilight is Carlisle because he's also known as the patriarch of the Cullen Coven and everyone follows his word and places him on a high pedestal like God, both Joseph and Carlisle dedicates themselves to the service of goodness, and also why every single person in Forks thinks of them as a cult because in reality as much as they try to deny it the Cullens are a cult that successfully recruited Bella into their group with ease.
From the videos of @/JuliaGoes on Tiktok who grew up Mormon and was raised in the teachings of the Mormon doctrine, Twilight is about an outsider to the LDS faith, coming into the Mormon faith and lifestyle. And honestly, it makes sense. Even ex-mormons believe that they used to be in a cult. She said so herself.
For me, Canon Carlisle Cullen, I have mixed feelings about him. He has many questionable characteristics and flaws that align to Mormon characteristics and why Smeyer wrote him that way. Smeyer even said that Twilight came into her dream, much like how Joseph Smith dreamt of God and Jesus telling him that all Churches are wrong and that an angel came into his dream blah blah blah. Have you ever questioned why the twilight vampires are often misinterpreted by other humans as Angels? From Emmett thinking that Rosalie's an angel when he woke up from his transformation as a vampire to Edward and his mother thinking that Carlisle is something completely different that's why Edward's mother begged Carlisle to save Edward from dying of influenza because she thought that Carlisle was an angel and many insinuations from their physical appearances that they are something unearthly, how Bella describes Edward to be angelic and glorious. Because I think Smeyer really meant to write a supernatural book that's meant to be Angels instead of vampires but, oh, well. (let me clarify the mormon version of angels and not the biblical ones because those angels are terrifying)
Carlisle also has a savior & god complex. Look, he said many times that he won't turn a human into a vampire but fast forward he has a whole coven of them, and he reasons that 'saving' them is his solution, and also that he's so fucking lonely that he needed company and disregarded consent. He sees a white person dying and just turns them, and also the fact the vampires don't just turn regular humans, it's pretty much insinuated in the Twilight Illustrated Guide that every leader of the coven saw a potential power/gift to those humans they turn into a vampire. That's why Jasper was turned by Maria, why Maggie, the lie detector, was turned by Siobhan, why Benjamin was turned by Amun.
Carlisle noticed that there was something special about Edward and felt pity that young man is dying, Carlisle turned Esme because he had a connection to her already when he saw him when she was a little girl-he was really looking for a romance because he was lonely, Carlisle noticed Rosalie as being one of the well-connected woman in her home city that had a bright future, and well, Emmett was just turned by Carlisle as an apology to Rose for turning her because Carlisle saw Rosalie dying from SA and said 'oh, a perfect girl to be turned into a vampire for my adopted son' but Edward didn't like her because Rosalie was too vain (Rose hated Edward because she didn't fit into his standards and became really bitter) As for Alice and Jasper the two vampires who are not turned by Carlisle, as soon as he learned of their gifts, 'welcome to the family!' let us all recall from the books that Edward looks down on Alice and Jasper in the aspect of them not being saved or turned into a vampire by Carlisle's venom because Edward worships Carlisle and thinks that they are the superior vampires because they were turned by Carlisle (the religiously good, pastor's son, vegetarian vampire that never drank human blood when he was turned, and tried to kill himself in numerous ways because he is horrified of what he become, and then found a way of drinking animal blood by accidentally killing a deer and found out that animal blood is sustainable enough for them)
Carlisle undoubtedly created a large family, which is something that Mormons are known for encouraging. The Cullens are not supposed to drink human blood but animal blood, and Mormons are not permitted to consume some liquids, such as those that contain caffeine. (in this case, caffeine is equivalent to vampire blood, in my opinion). When Edward was stopping himself from sucking Bella dry, he thought of Carlisle being disappointed in him is what mormonism teach when their members have sinful thoughts, that they should think of something else when they have urges.
Carlisle made sure that Alice and Jasper were married first before they officially joined the Cullen. The notion of celibacy, unity of marriage, and purity, is really highlighted in the books so many times. Why'd you think Edward stayed a virgin for so many decades? Why he thought of Bella as someone so pure and innocent (he just can't read her mind, but Bella's thoughts is exactly like every girl in Forks high school) and why he wanted to get married first before he turns Bella into a vampire, Edward basically placed in above Bella's head that in order for her to be a vampire, they need to get married first. Even though he loves Esme, he treats her like a maid and adopts the traditional values of women (I do not think traditional roles are bad, but if you read between the lines those female characters in Twilight that does not have these are written badly by Smeyer, example: Rosalie Hale & Leah Clearwater both can't have kids, the Denalis sisters portrayed as succubus and highly sexual women that are not married; it's bad according to mormon doctrine). That's because of Carlisle, they are both extremely religious people (that Smeyer based on being Mormon).
No sane parent would ever allow their century year old child to stalk a seventeen year old then continue to groom, be predatory-like and manipulate said seventeen year old to fit/mold herself into their standard. That's just failed parenting. But I also heard that old Mormon men are marrying minors with parental consent apparently (it's uncommon now apparently).
Both Carlisle and Joseph has searched for 'true religion'. Joseph read every scripture, tried to learn as much as he could about different religions including the occult until he had come up with Mormonism. For Carlisle it's a bit of a reverse, he was already an animal drinker and he wanted to find more vampires like him, he also explored the world, then he found the Volturi in Italy, and after experiencing what is like to be in the Volturi after leaving the Coven did he found what his true philosophy really was. (Volturi = Catholics, Cullens = Mormons. Joseph Smith hated Catholics because they lacked something, meaning Carlisle found a better way: animal blood because you are way better as a vampire if you drink animal blood, and Joseph: found a different way and superior way of worshipping God through Mormonism)
So here's what separated Joseph Smith and Carlisle Cullen because after all these years knowing this information I am still in denial about it.
But the difference between Edward and Carlisle, I am basing this off of the books, Carlisle believes that vampires are not damned and have souls while Edward believes that vampires go to hell. So, book Carlisle doesn't believe that turning into a vampire is damned, he just thinks that he couldn't subject another human into the life of vampirism. If he did, there will be a whole nother level of existential angst for him. Carlisle still believes that vampires are still a child of God, which I think a lot of Twilight fic writers got wrong about him, because from the Twilight fics I read back then, Carlisle strongly believes that being a vampire is a sin.
That's why Edward said that Carlisle 'adopted a new philosophy' or something along those lines that if they, as vampires, are still capable of believing in God, then you are still able to go to heaven according to the doctrine of Protestants. He did adopted a new philosophy or created a doctrine of his own, he married a woman who died of suicide, was very much in favor of Bella having an abortion because it was killing Bella, thinks that killing is a sin when it is done out of pleasure (he lets the other vampires hunt human but not in Forks territory), allowed Rosalie to get revenge.
And the fact that Carlisle is monogamous and Joseph Smith is into polygamy which his wife downright disagreed with so she didn't know that his husband married and had other wives for a while. (Emma Smith's maiden name is Hale and so is Esme's because in their cover up Rosalie and Jasper, the hale twins, are Esme's niece & nephew)
I wouldn't really single out Carlisle's whole character trait as being compassionate, (everyone describes him as one, Edward worships him because of his compassion) but the man is doing the bare minimum, LOL. He's literally a doctor whose job is to save lives and he often used that to create vampires because he was lonely. I would put him more into a morally ambiguous character. He does not care about human life as long as it's the medical practice of it. In Breaking Dawn he lets his vampire friends who drink human blood hunt to quench their thirst with the request to do it in another place. Let Rosalie deal with her abusers. Turned Rosalie into a vampire specifically to be Edward's mate. Didn't fight enough to save Bree Tanner. He's compassionate but it really doesn't say in the books that he donates a fortune to charity. Him turning Edward, Esme, Rosalie, and Emmett is not out of compassion. Forcing them to go to high school every time they move instead of actually fitting their age into college or fresh graduates. Makes Rosalie go to Med School so he can keep up with the modern medicine practices, I mean, why can't he do it?
This all may seem like that I don't like Carlisle, it's 50/50. I like and dislike him. He turns a person who's on the brink of death into a vampire because there is no other choice and so he makes it for them but at the same time he wouldn't do it to someone who has a choice, see what I mean? Carlisle chooses their fates.
Everything about Twilight is about a teenager being recruited into a cult because of unusual rules, like not being a real vampire, denying their true nature: Animal blood drinkers, goes to high school everytime, thinks they are better vampires because they drink animal blood, and all that.
The Cullens are Mormons (the perfected beings), the Volturi are the catholics (because as I said Joseph Smith had a dream that God and Jesus came into his dream and told him that the Catholic Church teachings are wrong). Carlisle tries to resist the true nature of vampires and tries to change that and Aro does not. Animal drinkers (mormons) are good and blood drinkers (catholics) are bad. According to their Mormon beliefs.
Edward & Carlisle think lowly of vampires who drink human blood, (even though Edward had a blood craze because he wanted to explore.)
This took so long because I was actually watching/reading about the teachings of Mormons. There is a lot of Mormonism rooted in Twilight and this is just the tip of the iceberg, like Carlisle being the first vampire in the Twilight universe that is an animal drinker or just like how John Smith is the founder of Mormonism. Because at theis point I only talked about Carlisle Cullen being an allegory to Joseph Smith.
SO NOW THAT I GOT THAT OUT OF THE WAY. Finally, here is how I advise you to write Carlisle. Remove every fucking mormon metaphors, allegories, insinuations, degredation of other blood drinkers and those who are not turned by Carlisle's venom. Make him a feminist (not the mormon version of feminist because their version is anti-feminist) Don't be a racist and let Carlisle turn POC into vampires because POC vampires do not exist in Twilight (Laurent is white in the books) because the venom removes the melatonin on their skin, and we all know how Smeyer thought of the Native Americans/the Quileute tribe and they are badly treated in the books, and how the Cullens belittled them in their own way by calling them mutts (that's a whole nother topic of racism in LDS)
That's it, hope it's helpful enough!
