𝐢𝐢. Creating a Vampire Coven
I haven't seen a lot of fanfiction that has their own Vampire Coven because it's more common for an OC to be human than a vampire, so I would loveee to talk about this.
If you want to read fanfic that has a Vampire Coven, I recommend -lunatichale 's Jasper Hale fanfic, Crown of Thornes, which has the Thorne Clan/Coven. Ugh! I love it so much. Sam really put a lot of effort into creating that Vampire Coven with their backstories and all of that, and they're all super unique and interesting!
So yeah, let's continue with that.
Here's the description of Vampire Covens in the Twilight Illustrated Guide:
"Most commonly, a coven is made up of two members. One feature of the unchanging nature of vampires is that they mate for life. Once they fall in love, that feeling never fades. As a general rule, only the bond between mates is strong enough to survive the competitive drive for blood. Larger covens are less stable, and usually end because of internal violence."
As I have said previously, even in a coven, vampires are territorial in nature.
"Each member of the coven maintains several well-tended identities, complete with the documents to support them, which allows the Cullens to establish themselves in new locations as necessary. Each time the Cullens move, the relationships they claim to share with one another may shift, too. Each time the Cullens move, the relationships they claim to share with one another may shift, too. In one place, two members might pose as father and adopted son; in another, brothers, or uncle and nephew. Regardless, the bonds of love and respect between members of the coven are immutable."
But no one really follows that canon rule with the shifting of relationships and roles that they portray to the humans because it wasn't really stated in the movies. In Fanon, Esme and Carlisle will generally be the parents, and the rest of the Cullens will play it off as siblings.
So, how will you start making an interesting coven? Let's start first by asking how many are there in a coven. A coven doesn't have to be as big as the Cullens or the Volturi; it can be two or three vampires like the Romanians (when Aro killed the rest of their coven, but Stefan and Vladimir still consider themselves as a coven), and the three vampire coven like James, Victoria, and Laurent.
If you are considering a big coven, keep in mind that the Volturi will always be kept in check because they will soon feel threatened if a Coven is large when it comes to numbers and if there are also many gifted vampires in the said coven.
A well-balanced number for a coven for me is the Denali Coven (Tanya–is the leader; Irina, Kate, Carmen, Eleazar, and Garrett joined them after Irina died. The real leader of the coven was Sasha, but the Volturi killed her because of creating an immortal child) so five vampires in a coven seems good enough. Or the Egyptian Coven (Amun—the leader, Kebi, Benjamin, and Tia)
These covens share a similarity: a leader and one or two members with a gift (The gifts will be explained in another chapter).
A leader of the coven is the one who keeps everyone in check, the one who will be followed, and the one who makes sure that their coven is protected. They usually have parental instincts like Carlisle or the older sibling vibe like Tanya.
With the covens, they usually have a geographical name of where they typically reside or the surnames that they use. For example, the Olympic Coven is commonly known as the Cullen Coven. Still, they don't usually use the Olympic Coven as a name because I think they move around a lot to even use the geographical name. But like the Denalis, who reside in Denali, Alaska, and use that as a surname sometimes as well. Adding to this is the Egyptian Coven from Egypt. The Romanian Coven in Romania. The Amazon Coven from the Amazon, natives of the Pantanal wetlands. The Irish Coven in Ireland, and on.
For me, the Cullens don't really consider themselves a coven but more of a family. Garrett stated that in the books, too. That's why they don't really feel animosity or territorial with one another. They have created this bond that surpasses all of that. Look at James's coven because they have no real bond with each other, except for James and Victoria, who are mates; Laurent immediately bailed on James and Victoria and sought asylum in the Denali Coven.
So you can make that with your vampire coven as well! It's like a found family trope. You basically have the creative liberties on what to call them and where they reside. You can go with the geographical name or the surname (The surname is usually the leader of the coven's surname)
You can write about how they were formed or why the leader wanted a coven, how they met each other, how they perceived each other at first, and the development of their bonds throughout the years. Or why certain members of the coven wanted to be part of the coven. Always ask yourself the WH questions. You can make a coven from your country and incorporate your characters, your culture and personality. It's really a blank canvas.
You can stray away completely from the plot of the movies/books and create your plot with the Cullens, or have your coven move into Forks! (Don't forget the treaty with the shifters)
Here's some advice as well. Always make your characters interesting and relevant to the story!
What is their purpose, and what is their role in the story? You can't have favoritism with your characters and choose who gets the best lines, awesome abilities, or unique personalities. They all need to be doing something that adds more depth to your story.
If one of your characters has minimal interaction or addition to the story, they'll often be placed to the side or forgotten—irrelevant. Why did you even create them? For decoration? Make them bring something to the table!
So that's that. I don't really know what I can be of help with this because it really depends on the writer and their creative ability to make their characters interesting. That is my take on creating a vampire coven! I hope I covered that well since there isn't really much to learn about covens in general.
