𝐢. How to write Jasper Hale's human past in fanfiction
Okay, so after stating my opinion regarding our beloved tortured blonde boy. You may ask, "Okay then, self-proclaimed expert of twilight fics, how can we write Jasper's past in our fanfiction?"
Well, then, I am very much happy to help.
I have written three Jasper Hale fan fictions and'll explain how I wrote them in my fics. But let's start with how I learned what Jasper's past is really about.
Okay, so, after learning about Jasper's human life, because my dad and I watch YouTube videos about history, my dad was a history geek, so I often get persuaded to watch America's history with him. It's actually where I got my OCs, Genevieve and Greyson's backstory, and the Salem witch trials. Then, I saw a video regarding the American Civil War, and I was like, "That's when Jasper was turned," When I finished watching it, I was like, fucking hell. Fast forward to a few years, I read my first fanfiction of Jasper. I can't remember what fic is that exactly cause I read tons, but I remembered getting so mad that the fic just brushed over the fact that he was a Confederate soldier and that they are excusing and consoling his actions. I was so bewildered. Telling myself that, "That isn't right at all,"
Because how can you brush that off? How can you excuse his actions? I can't. That's why I didn't follow the canon of the mentally frozen state when writing my fics. You have to be clear in your fics that you won't be following the canon rules of Smeyer's vampires. You have to explain that as the story progresses because there can be very observing readers pointing that out, which is embarrassing.
Then, after watching that history video, I researched it more, read more articles, and watched more videos about it-further research into the civil rights movement for African Americans-the protests, the donations, etc.
To my beloved Redamancy, my first ever Jasper Hale fanfiction that gained so much adoration from Twilight readers even though my writing is so cringy, LOL. So, in this fic, I retained Jasper's past in the only way I knew how because it's my first fan fiction. I don't really know how to change things up back then.
BUT I did change Jasper's perspective and actions. He lived through the movement but did nothing? NO BABY GIRL. After learning what side he joined during the Civil War, he deeply regretted his actions in his human life, and he acted on his regret. He rallied, joined the protests, joined the movements, donated his money to the movement, and helped. He went through a significant CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT.
In my second Jasper fanfiction, which is Querencia. This is where I started exploring Jasper's human life little by little. In this, his father was abusive to his mother and him; he loved his mother, and that's why he learned to respect women. He was a poor farm boy who didn't earn much. Then, he joined the war, in the UNION. As we know, canonically, he was a natural-born leader, charismatic, persuasive, and easy to learn, so he became a spy for the Union. I changed what side he was on during the war. It's as simple as that.
Then, in my third Jasper fanfiction, Raison D'etre. This is where I am very confident of switching things up and completely changing Jasper's past. Like in Querencia, he was a poor, stable boy who worked for wealthy families alongside people of color. He knew what their situation was at the time. His father was abusive to his mother and his siblings. He has siblings, yes, the oldest of three. Seeing the situation of his human friends, he decided to join the war and fight alongside them in the Union Army. He became a spy for the Union and, because of it, rose through their ranks and became the youngest major.
So, these are some examples of what you can change regarding Jasper's human past. He can learn about what really happened at the time because of academic resources. Because I, for one, will be curious about the era I lived through when I was human. Let him be curious about his human past. So when he finally realizes what side he joined during the war, he feels guilty and regrets his actions. But does it stop at guilt and regret? NO. Let him act up with his guilt and shame, and make him join the civil rights movement during the 1950s and 1960s. OR, a really fun idea is to make him act on vengeance by burning and destroying confederate statues or, like those confederate appreciation things, burn their flags. Eliminate racist groups. He killed before, and he can kill again, but this time, their pain is his biggest accomplishment because they also cause pain to those who are helpless.
JASPER CAN BE MORALLY GRAY.
I like that about him; he has no problem with it and no regard for human life. If you've read Midnight Sun, he and Rosalie are so ready to kill Bella, but being the submissive that he is to Alice, he doesn't act on it.
Why did I make his father abusive? This adds to his character that because his father is abusive to his mother, he vows that he will never lay a hand on women because he saw with his own eyes how much pain his mother was enduring from his father. In my eyes, he's a mama's boy. His mother encourages him never to be cynical about love and always to find hope, even if it may seem difficult.
Jasper is the breadwinner of the family. His father was a drunkard, and his mother only earned money by selling her handmade handkerchiefs or any handmade crafts. They need to earn more. So, he works multiple jobs, mostly for wealthy families. He is young, charismatic, and persuasive and can quickly get jobs, mainly because he is a white man, too, so he does not experience any problems when acquiring jobs. He can't get high-ranking jobs. After all, he isn't qualified for it because he didn't have a good education. He is a farm boy or a stable boy. He worked for wealthy families. With that, he worked alongside people of color and saw how different the treatments were with him vs. with them. He knew it was wrong. He's also poorly treated, but not as badly as them. Being curious, he quickly learns of their situation because they are his friends. He got along with them perfectly, and he did not understand why society was making people of color different when they were not because they were the kindest people he had ever met. He could see no difference between them, not even their skin color.
So he decided to join the war with them. To fight for what he believes is right.
When changing certain canon things about a character, you really need to explain why?
Why did he become a Union soldier instead of a Confederate soldier?
So, to start with that, you'll start on how he grew up, his environment, and his beliefs. It would help if you considered those aspects.
If Jasper had grown up wealthy, he would have been surrounded by conservative Southerners; he would have the same mentality as they did. He would have owned slaves like many wealthy people had back then.
You really need to start at the root of it all. Why is Jasper the way he is in the first place? Why is he like that in your fanfiction? Explore his character.
But create a certain change that makes sense. Yes, you're writing fanfiction, but you must also be realistic.
And, yeah, that's it! Hope this helps. I'll also write my opinion and advice on how to write Jasper's time during the Southern Vampire Wars.
