❛ ACT I ❜
-ˋˏ chapter twelve ˎˊ-

JENNA HATED HER.

Sofia couldn't belive that when she woke up her aunt had gone to live on campus. According to her sister, while Sofia was passed out, Isobel showed up on the Gilbert doorstep.

The vampire revealed herself to Jenna and her aunt was shocked that her boyfriend's ex was alive. She knew her family lied to her.

Sofia was upset that she wasn't conscious when this happened, she felt like she could have comforted Jenna or tried to explain. But she also knew Jenna didn't want to see her face.

That was implied when her aunt wouldn't answer her calls.

All three siblings were miserable and guilty. The house felt empty without their aunt around. All they could do is try to get Jenna to talk to them or contact them.

Sofia felt the most of it. She was responsible for their family yet she couldn't keep her aunt here. She wondered how Jenna would react if Sofia told her the truth. Would Jenna be scared of her? Hate her? Accept her?

There is many ways that telling Jenna the truth could go wrong and Sofia wasn't comfortable compelling her aunt.

She would just have to wait for Jenna to come back.

Sofia's eyes were glazed over slightly as houses and people passed by her in a slow blur. She wasn't focusing on the road like she should.

Her mind was a mess.

She's been calling and texting her aunt all morning but got nothing in return. Nothing. Sofia considered driving down to the university but she knew her aunt would just ignore her still.

Jonas's words from the previous night were playing on repeat in her head, picking at her brain.

"How could you stand by them after they killed Elijah?! Your soulmate!"

Soulmate.

Sofia knew what a soulmate was. Well, the the story book version her mother use to tell. A soulmate was someone made for you, right? Someone compatible.

But were they real? Did Sofia even believe in them? She always thought she'd find someone and love them but not her soulmate. The world doesn't work like that.

But she thought the same thing before she discovered the supernatural. Could this be a something unexplained like vampires, witches and werewolves? Was there more to it?

Was she soulmates with Elijah Mikaelson?

That mere thought was enough to make her skin rise with goosebumbs and the hair at the back of her neck to stand up.

She needed answers. And when something weird occurs, you go to a trusted witch.

Soon enough, Sofia pulled up in the familiar drive way and wasted no time in grabbing her bag and walking to the front door. She rang the doorbell and not even a minute later did Bonnie open her door.

"Sofia?" The witch asked questionably, surprised to see her friend since she was sure the Gilberts were dealing with Isobel.

Sofia smiled nervously. "Hey Bon. Sorry for just coming here without calling -"

"Oh no, it's cool. Don't worry." Bonnie shrugged it off with her usual friendly smile. "My dad's at work, you wanna come in?"

Sofia nodded gratefully and stepped inside the small home. Ever since Grams died, Bonnie's been living with her father. The house was a little smaller than Grams's and Bonnie hated that her father wasn't too fond about their witch bloodline.

They settled in the witch's room with both girls facing each other on Bonnie's bed. Sofia was playing with her daylight ring nervously and looked to be thinking about something.

"Sofia?" Bonnie's nudged her gently and the vampire sighed.

"What I'm about to ask of you and tell you has to be kept a secret Bon." Sofia's eyes stared into Bonnie's sternly. "You can't tell anyone, not even my siblings."

Bonnie was very intrigued now. A secret of Sofia's? That's rare, especially if she's keeping it from her family. But she can see how serious her friend was about the topic.

"I promise." Bonnie linked her pinky with Sofia's, earning a small smile from the vampire.

"Do you know anything about soulmates in the supernatural?"

Bonnie nodded with a confused expression. "Yeah..... my Grams told me about them. She said they were created by a ancient witch from dark magic a long time ago. Why?"

"Well, uh." Sofia cleared her throat "I think - maybe - that I might be soulmates with Elijah." Sofia rushed out.

"What?"

"Bonnie -" Sofia went to explain but Bonnie interrupted her.

"Wait, like soulmates soulmates or I have a crush soulmate?" Bonnie asked leaning forward. "Like meant to be soulmates?"

Sofia bit the inside of her cheek and continued to play with her daylight ring. "Soulmates soulmates, Bonnie."

Her eyes widen. "How? Do you have proof?"

Sofia nodded silently before slowly revealing her wound to the witch, which looked way worse than the day before.

Bonnie gasped in horror and looked at the wound."Oh my God! Sofia what happened?!"

Bonnie touched her shoulder in concern but it made Sofia wince.

"Sorry!" Bonnie apologized.

"No, it's okay." Sofia played it off, covering the wound again.

"How long have you had this?"

"Ever since Damon daggered Elijah -"

"In the heart." The witch pieced it together. "You got this because Elijah is daggered." Bonnie met her eyes again

Sofia nodded. "It seems we're linked. When he's daggered, I get this stab wound but I don't desiccate." Sofia explained.

"Maybe Jonas did a linking spell on you, tying you to Elijah?" Bonnie suggested.

"I thought of that too." Sofia said. "But why me? I wasn't a threat to him or anything. His main focus was on keeping Elena safe."

"So you think you're linked through a sort of soulmate bond?" Bonnie asked in disbelief.

Sofia nodded. "Yes but there's more." She inhaled a deep breathe. "Back when Elena and I were kidnapped by Rose and Trevor, Rose said my birthmark meant I was 'special' or something. She said that I was the key to Elijah's forgiveness. Wouldn't that imply that I'm important to him in some way?"

Bonnie nodded."Good point." She stayed silent for a few seconds. "Did Elijah ever harm you?"

Sofia instantly shook her head. "No, he never hurt me. He acted very calm and gentle around me." She found herself smiling slightly before dropping the smile once she realized.

Bonnie looked at her friend in pity. Sofia must have felt something for Elijah because she's never seemed so affected by a man before.

Sofia cleared her throat. "And uh, last night Jonas said Elijah was my soulmate. And then he did some kind of spell on me and I saw these images."

Bonnie leaned closer and reached for her hand. "Can I see them?"

Sofia silently nodded and Bonnie took the brunette's hand in hers and closed her eyes. The second she closed her eyes the images suddenly appeared before her.

Bonnie snapped her eyes open with a startled gasp and dropped Sofia's hand.

"That grimoire." She said in realization.

"What?"

"I've seen that grimoire before." Bonnie blinked a few times, trying to remember.

"The one from my vision?" Sofia questioned hopefully.

"Yes!" Bonnie said excitingly as the memory came back to her.

She got up and walked to her wardrobe, opening it and bending down to drag a big box out. "Last night, Damon and Jeremy came with me to get the Martin's grimoires after they died so I can keep them safe."

Bonnie brought the box to sit in between them and Sofia noticed how it was filled to the brim with books.

"That grimoire in the vision, it had an odd symbol on the cover. I remember seeing one like it when I packed them away." Bonnie explained and started to unpack and inspect the different grimoires.

Sofia helped her search through the mountain of grimoires, none looking familiar. As she got closer to the bottom, she noticed a grimoire bigger than the others and more worn out. And right on the cover was the peculiar symbol neither girls understood.

"Bonnie look!" Sofia picked it up and showed the witch the cover. "This is it right?"

"Yeah." Bonnie replied and took the book, eyes wide in awe as she paged through the ancient grimoire. "There should be something about soulmates in here."

Sofia moved closer to the witch to see the pages too, curious. She really hopes she didn't make this whole thing up in her head and is wasting Bonnie's time.

But her gut told her she wasn't just putting invisable pieces together.

"It's here!" Bonnie's voice brought Sofia back to reality. "I found it." She looked at Sofia and the vampire grinned.

"Whoever wrote this, did it centuries ago." Bonnie noted. "Wait, it's a spell." She squinted her dark eyes.

"Really?" Sofia questioned, not understanding the Latin words scribbled on the page.

"Yeah, it's a spell to see if you have the soulmate bond in your blood." Bonnie answered after translating the spell in her head. She looked at Sofia. "I can try it on you if you want, to see if you have it. But I'm not sure if it will tell us if it's Elijah."

Sofia hesitated. "Will it drain you?"

Bonnie read over the spell again and shook her head. "No, it's quite easy, I just need your blood."

"Okay." Sofia smiled before grabbing Bonnie's hand. "You promise it won't hurt you?"

The witch smiled at her friend's care. "I promise."

─── ο½₯ ο½‘οΎŸβ˜†: *.☽ .* :β˜†οΎŸ. ───

"Are you sure you want to do this?" Bonnie asked the vampire across from her.

They were seated on Bonnie's bedroom floor, across one another with a small bowl of Sofia's blood in front of Bonnie. The curtains were drawn and the door closed so the room was darker and quiter. Four candles were placed around them and Sofia tried to calm her nerves for the spell to work.

"Yeah." Sofia smiled assuringly at her. "Just don't put too much on yourself. If the spell doesn't work, it's fine."

Bonnie chuckled at her words. "You are such a big sister." She looked at Sofia in amusement.

"I am a big sister." She rolled her eyes with a small smirk.

With one last smile, Bonnie closed her eyes and exhaled deeply, the brunette copying her actions.

Bonnie started to chant the spell and Sofia couldn't help but open her left eye slightly, watching as her blood levitated and circled slowly around Bonnie's hovering hand. The witch looked very focused as she continued the spell.

Sofia gasped when she felt a familiar stinging sensation on her shoulder and it intensified as Bonnie's chants got louder. She looked down at her birthmark and her eyes widen when it started to glow. She reached up to touch it and the second her finger came in contact with her skin, images flashed before her eyes rapidly.

The images were of a all too familiar man over the decades, in different time periods and clothing, smiling, laughing, blazing in anger, drowning in sadness and relief.

Sofia snapped her eyes open, puffs of startled air coming out of her mouth.

Bonnie, who finished the spell, looked at her with wide eyes. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah - yeah I think." Sofia looked up to meet Bonnie's eyes and the witch could see how shocked the vampire was.

"It worked, didn't it?" Bonnie asked softly.

Sofia let out a breath and covered her eyes with her hands. "I saw Elijah." She said quietly.

"So you really are soulmates with Elijah?" Bonnie exclaimed in shock, not fully believing that it was true before.

"I'm so screwed Bon." Sofia stood up to pace around the room, voice laced with worry. "I'm soulmates with Elijah. Elijah of all people! This would be great if he wasn't the enemy at the moment!"

"Well actually, Klaus -"

"And he was going to give my little sister up to die without telling me - oh my God." Sofia stopped pacing to look at Bonnie. "Do you think he knows?!"

"About?"

"The soulmate bond."

"Honestly? Maybe. I mean he's been around for a long time so he must have known." Bonnie answered truthfully before standing up and placing her hands on Sofia's shoulders. "I won't tell anyone, I promised, remember?"

Sofia sighed. "Thank you."

Bonnie gave her a sympathic smile before bringing her into a warm embrace, one which Sofia needed.

"I'll look for anything that can cure or stop your wound from taking over your entire body. And find a strong enough unlinking spell." Bonnie told her as they pulled away.

"Thanks, I don't think Damon's going to undagger Elijah anytime soon." Sofia rolled her eyes.

Bonnie shook her head. "When are you two going to make up? He looked really sad yesterday, like he was kicking himself for something."

Sofia looked at the witch questionably. "Since when do you care about Damon's feelings?"

Bonnie chuckled. "I don't - at all. I care about you getting your best friend back."

Sofia shrugged. "I'll let him suffer for another day or two."

Bonnie laughed and Sofia took out her phone. She had some missed calls from Stefan, Damon and Jeremy.

She frowned. "I need to go." She gave Bonnie one last hug. "Thank you again for confirming everything and not telling anyone. I appreciate it Bons."

Bonnie hugged the vampire back with a smile. "Anything for you Sof."
