β ACT I β
-ΛΛ chapter one ΛΛ-
SOFIA GILBERT groaned sleepily as the sound of her ringtone rang through out her bedroom.
She didn't bother to open her eyes as she reached over to her bedside table to grab her phone. The brunette vampire winced at the brightness of her screen before her eyes adjusted to the contact's name. She scowled before accepting the call.
"Why the hell are you calling me so early Damon? Do you want me to toss all your bourbon into the fire?" She grumbled, miserable.
"Who pissed on your toothbrush huh?" Damon retorted, not fazed by her threat.
Sofia rolled her eyes and sat up, running her hand through her loose hair. It was knotty and needed to be brushed. "You know what's the first thing I want to hear when I wake up?" She asked, humming absent mindingly.
"What?"
"Not your annoying voice."
"You are not miss sunshine in the morning. Bambi." The older vampire said, using the name he gave her when they met. He told her it's because she looks as innocent as a baby deer. Ironic because she drinks blood. Not animal blood like Stefan Salvatore though, she finds the taste revolting.
"Why are you calling me? Did you kill someone again?" She asked, making a face.
"No, and I'm offended that your mind immediately went to that."
"With your track record?
Seriously?"
"Shut up and get your ass over here. It's important."
Sofia placed her phone on speaker and left it on her bed before standing up. She opened her curtains, letting the sunlight warm her face thanks to her daylight ring. Then she walked to her dresser to find some clothes. "What is wrong now?"
Every ten minutes there's some supernatural problem that includes her friends and herself. It's been months and Sofia was sick of it.
"Bitchy vampire slut is up to something. Blondie called and said Katherine has a message, I'm guessing you want to hear it too."
Sofia frowned, worried for Caroline. Recently Katherine threatened to kill Matt if Caroline didn't spy on Elena and Stefan's relationship. The Forbes girl broke yesterday, spilling the beans. Caroline was the sweetest person in Sofia's life and didn't deserve what Katherine has done to her.
"Yeah, of course. I'll be right there. Thank you Damon." She replied, taking out a black skirt and a long sleeved red top.
"Of course Sofie." He paused and she could hear the smirk on his face when he said his next words. "You'd get here faster if you came in your undies. I won't judge."
Sofia laughed, knowing how empty his flirting was. "I'd rather pour vervain into my eyes." Then she walked over to her bed and hang up.
Damon Salvatore and Sofia Gilbert were an odd pair to their friendgroup. Damon was reckless, impulsive and had very little care for others. He killed without remorse. Sofia lived his lifestyle yet she wasn't nearly as brutal as him. She drank from bloodbags and not innocents, was extremely compassionate even to those who don't deserve it and was the 'big sister' in everyone's lives.
They met after Stefan turned her and brought her to the boarding house to help her adjust. Sofia hated Damon at first, repulsed by his attitude towards humans. He didn't like her either because she was too 'goody goody' like Stefan.
But so much has happened since then and they both realized how much trust had formed between them. Damon started opening up to her and she didn't push him away or label him like he expected. She actually cared about his well being and wanted to be there for him.
From then, Damon Salvatore viewed Sofia Gilbert as one of a kind. He loved her for it and treasured their friendship. Not like he's ever admmited it but it was clear. And she, too, valued their connection.
They were an odd pair, but a great one.
Looking in her dresser mirror, Sofia stared back at herself with a blank expression. Like the rest of the Gilberts she had chocolate brown hair that reached the small of her back in loose curls. Her skin was pale but not sickly. She had sharp cheekbones and doe eyes like her mother.
And peeking out from her tank top was her birthmark. It was a very odd but unique shape. She couldn't even think of anything it resembled. It was just a shape. Whenever she looked at it, she felt uneasy for unknown reasons.
Yawning, Sofia noticed the time and she needed to get ready for the day ahead.
A familiar picture frame caught the young vampire's attention before she could enter her bathroom. It was taken by her brother Jeremy at her graduation months ago. Miranda was kissing her cheek on her right side and Grayson was pointing at her smiling face proudly on her left.
It hurt still. To think of them. To think of that night. She hated that she lived but they didn't. Her little siblings deserve to have their parents in their life. More than her.
Frowning, Sofia looked away from the picture with a familiar ache in her chest. Pushing it down, she continued to the bathroom, smiling at Jeremy and Elena who were brushing their teeth.

Jenna Sommers was Miranda Gilbert's younger sister. And has taken responsibility over the Gilbert siblings after their parents passed away.
It was difficult for Jenna to juggle her studies and the chaos in the Gilbert house but Sofia was a big help. She always took care of her younger siblings even before the crash and she was doing a better job now that her vampirism amplified her motherly nature.
The two young women were like partners in taking care of the family. Both were young adults dealing with their family and it was important that they were close. Sofia saw Jenna as her big sister since they weren't that far in age. Jenna gave advice when asked and never judged the kids for their way of coping.
Jenna was completely unaware of the supernatural and, honestly, Sofia was terrified of telling her about her vampirism.
Coming down the stairs showered and dressed, Sofia made a beeline for the kitchen after hearing Jenna pour coffee. She entered and smiled at her aunt. "Good Morning, Aunt J." She greeted.
"Morning Sofie. Do you want some toast?" Jenna smiled at her niece, holding a loaf of bread in her hands.
Sofia shook her head disapprovingly, taking the bread from Jenna. "No because you need to be resting. It's been a day since you were discharged Jenna!"
Jenna was recovering from when she stabbed herself in the stomach. Katherine compelled her to do this and this added to Sofia's hate to the vampire.
Jenna snatched the loaf back with a pretend look of annoyance, but her smile gave her away. "I refuse to sit around all day. I'm 25! Not 70!"
Sofia groaned at her stubbornness. There was no use getting Jenna back to bed if she didn't want to. "Fine but you better not go out today." She pointed at her sternly.
Jenna smirked, putting bread in the toaster. "Yeah yeah."
Smiling, Sofia stepped away from the counter. "I'm heading over to Stefan's."
"Okay honey, enjoy and stay safe!" Jenna kissed Sofia's cheek, already moving to their refrigerator to get more breakfast supplies.
"I always am." Sofia waved at Jenna and before grabbing her shoulder bag from the table and leaving the house.

The Salvatore Boarding House was massive and very old. Both the Salvatore brothers resided in it. Sofia even had a bedroom of her own since there is so many.
Stepping closer to the overly large door of the house, the Gilbert didn't bother knocking. She entered and closed the door, listening for where her friends where.
"What? Knocking is too cool for you?" Damon scoffed, coming around the corner to greet her.
Sofia rolled her eyes, allowing the man to throw his arm around her shoulder and lead her to the library.
"You should be careful who you invite into the house." She said mockingly, earning an amused chuckle.
Caroline Forbes was sitting on the couch in front of the fireplace, nursing a glass of blood. Stefan sat near her and they both turned to the entering two.
Sofia frowned at the obviously frightened blonde. She left Damon's side to sit closely to Caroline and the girl immediately rested her head on her shoulder. "What happened Care?" Sofia questioned before accepting a glass of blood from Damon.
"I had a run in with Katherine. I'm still shaking." Caroline answered her friend. Sofia rubbed her hand up and down Caroline's arm, trying to help her relax.
"Go ahead, tell them. You two are gonna love this." Damon gestured for Caroline to talk.
"I saw Katherine at The Grill. I just stopped by to gawk and quasi - stalk Matt." Caroline sheepishly admitted, not proud of her actions.
The blonde then rambled about how she backed out from nerves last minute and said she was only using the bathroom. "Skip the teen drama and get to it." Damon snapped impatiently.
"Let her speak." Sofie scolded Damon with her eyes before looking back at Caroline, who leaned closer.
"Then I had to pretend to use the bathroom even though I didn't really have to go because I'm a doofus. But then Katherine cornered me and demanded that I give you two a message." Caroline said, looking between the brothers.
"What's the message?" Sofia asked, already regretting asking.
"To tell you guys that she wants the moonstone or she'll rip this town until it rains blood." Caroline winced.
"Tell them the rest of it." Damon demanded.
"Tonight, at the masquerade ball." Caroline finished, lifting her head from Sofia's shoulder.
Stefan sighed and started to pace around them. "She wants to do it in public. Killing Mason thew her off guard." He stated.
"She's running scared. What she did to Jenna was desperate." Damon looked at his brother.
"She's running out of tricks." Sofia added, mind thinking of all the things Katherine could pull on them.
"We can't underestimate her. We have to play this smarter than her." Stefan pointed out, stopping in front of the girls.
Caroline huffed irratibly. "Can we just give her the moonstone so she'll leave?" She looked at Stefan, desperate for Katherine to leave their lives forever.
"No, Katherine's not getting dick. I've had it. I'm going to go to the masquerade ball and I'm gonna kill her tonight." Damon confidently exclaimed, walking around the couch.
"You're not gonna kill her." Stefan pointed at his brother firmly.
"Don't give me that goody-goody crap." Damon glared at Stefan.
"You're not gonna kill her."
"Oh, really?"
"Because I am." Stefan revealed making Damon smile proudly.
Sofia said nothing. She didn't know if their plan would work because it always seems Katherine is ten steps ahead of them. Always. Sofia wanted the bitch dead but it wouldn't be this simple.
"So, now that that's settled. I need a date." Damon clapped his hands together before smirking at his best friend suggestively. "Bambi?"
Sofia titled her head with a smile. "I'd rather die again." This made Caroline smirk and Stefan chuckle.
"I'll take that as a yes." The raven haired Salvatore wiggled his eyebrows.
Caroline suddenly latched onto her friend's arm with an excited smile, her previous fear evaporating at the idea of dress shopping. "Come on! Then we can go dress shopping!" She beamed.
Sofia raised her eyebrows at her sudden mood change. "I was actually just going to wear one of my old ones." She shrugged, not in the mood to waste hours at the mall. Especially with Caroline. Sofia loves her like a little sister but jeez that girl can shop.
Caroline scoffed, pulling Sofia to her feet eruptly. "Not on my watch! We're going shopping and we are going to look jaw-dropping!"
Caroline Elizabeth Forbes was a force to be reckoned with once she set her mind on something and Sofia was not going to be the one to go against her.
"Fine." The brunette gave in, and Caroline smiled triumphantly.
"Great!"

After a surprisingly short two hour trip to the mall, the vampire girls returned to find everybody but Elena preparing for tonight.
Sofia's eyes inspected the crossbow in her hands, leaning her body against the table full of weapons Alaric Saltzman brought. Caroline stayed a good distance away, not wanting anything to do with vampire killing weapons.
"I got Stefan's message."
Sofia's vampire hearing caught the familiar voice of Bonnie Bennett. She put down the weapon to stand closer to the entrance. She offered a smile in which the younger girl returned.
Sofia has known both Caroline and Bonnie since they were kids. They were her sister's best friends and therefore, by extention, Sofia's non- blood related little sisters. With only a year difference, the girls were extremely close and protective of each other.
Stefan approached the Bennett witch. "Hey, you brought the grimoire, thank you." He looked at her gratefully, knowing Bonnie was reluctant to come over. She's not a fan of vampire business but since most of her friends were ones, it's difficult staying away.
"What's going on?" Bonnie questioned.
"We're gonna kill Katherine." Jeremy vaguely informed, passing the two to get to the weapons table. But he didn't get any closer because his older sister placed a firm hand on his chest, giving him an authoritive look.
Sofia hated how much Jeremy wanted to get involved in the supernatural. Elena was already in the middle of it and the last thing Sofia wants his Jeremy included.
Jeremy rolled his eyes, moving around her. "Chill Annie." He told her making her glare slightly.
Only her family members call her 'Annie' at times. It's based of her middle name 'Anne.' Grayson, their dad, was the one it originated from.
Sofia watched with narrowed eyes as her brother picked up a gun containing wooden bullets. "You're not going to shoot your own sister, are you?" Sofia pretended to skeptically eye him.
"Depends. Am I your favorite family member?" Jeremy raised his eyebrow playfully and her eyes narrowed further.
"No, Jenna's my favorite." Sofia bluntly answered before using her vampire speed to grab the gun from her brother and shove him gently.
Jeremy groaned. "Seriously?" He whined like a child.
"My baby brother shouldn't be handling guns!" Sofia ruffled up Jeremy's hair, knowing he hated it when she called him her baby brother in public.
Jeremy glared at her.
The group gathered around the table, eyes trained on Alaric as he showed them the different weapons and how to use them properly.
"This works with compressed air. The trigger mechanism is up here. I have two of these in a different size." He put on a sleeve like device and turned to Stefan. "For you I recommend this. It fits nicely under your jacket sleeve. You use the trigger when you're ready." The man elaborated.
Alaric then did a sudden stabbing movement and the vampires of the group looked at him with strange expressions. He noticed. "You wanted me to show you how to kill her vampire." He shrugged, putting the weapon down.
Alaric continued to talk, and Sofia picked up the crossbow she looked over earlier used to shoot wooden stakes. An mischievous idea came to mind. Silently, she aimed at Damon's shoulder before pulling the trigger. Quickly the Salvatore caught it and smirked at her miss.
"Too slow."
She smiled innocently before aiming at his leg and successfully shooting a stake into his knee. "Yes!" She cheered and high fived Caroline.
βββ ο½₯ qοΎβ: *.β½ .* :βοΎ. βββ
Sofia smiled at her reflection in Caroline's mirror, smoothing down the bottom half of the dress.
It was black, short but not innapropriate. The sleeves were long and open and the neckline was low, showing a decent amount of cleavage. She wore her pearl necklace with her hair down. Black heels and mask matching.
She had to get ready at Caroline's house because Elena couldn't know about their plan.
Sofia was brought away from her thoughts when Caroline walked back into the bedroom and squealed at the sight of Sofia dressed up. "You're stunning!" She gushed and walked over.
The blonde vampire wore a blood red sleeveless dress that hugged her body perfectly. Her hair was set in wavey curls and her makeup was light. Sofia smiled at her beautiful friend. "Says the one who looks like a red carpet star."
"Thank you! Black really suits you Sofie." Caroline complimented the older girl before looking at the door. "We need to get going, don't want to be late!"
"Wait." Sofia stopped her from walking away. Caroline stayed silent and waited for Sofia to speak. "Are you sure you don't want me near when you do your part tonight? I know Katherine really spooks you." Sofia offered, worried.
Caroline stiffened at the reminder of her part in their plan. But she exhaled in order to calm down. "I need to face her sometime. It's okay Sof, I got it." She smiled weakly. "Thanks though."
"Anytime." Sofia offered the girl her arm, Caroline smirking and linking hers with her own. "Shall we?"
"We shall."
βββ ο½₯ qοΎβ: *.β½ .* :βοΎ. βββ
The masquerade ball was held at the Lockwood mansion. And, like all the parties hosted there, it was grand.
Everybody was dancing with their partners and friends, enjoying the music and food. Fairy lights decorated the back yard and tents were put up.
Sofia thanked the waiter as she took a glass of champagne off of the silver tray, her doe eyes scanning the crowd for Katherine Pierce.
Caroline went off to find Matt, and Jeremy and Bonnie went to prepare the room they were planning on killing Katherine in. Taking a sip, her eyes met Damon's as he walked up to her still figure. He smiled.
"Looking gorgeous Sof." Damon kissed her cheek before moving to her side, watching the crowd with her.
She smiled and looked at his appearance. A classic tux. "You look good in a suit. I wonder how you fit your ego in there?" She taunted cheekily.
"Ouch, right in the heart." He winced, clutching his chest dramatically.
"I'm kidding, you look good." She patted his chest with a chuckle.
"I know." He smirked. The woman titled her head back, finishing the champagne."Would you like to dance, Miss Gilbert?" He bowed properly making her laugh.
"It would be my honor Mr. Salvatore." She nodded and placed the empty glass down. She took his offered hand before yelping in surprise when Damon spun her around before giggling. The Salvatore smiled.
He twirled her under his arm a few times before they swayed side to side. They danced to the music, Sofia trying to purposely step on his feet and Damon trying to avoid it, making others glance at the laughing pair in bewilderment.
Then the Salvatore looked to the side and frowned. All amusement was gone as he looked back down at her. "Your turn, be careful." Damon warned, giving her arm a squeeze before walking away.
Sofia turned around and saw her brother looking at her from across the lawn. She immediately started walking towards him. Jeremy nodded at her as she reached his side before they focused on two woman not far from them.
"Elena." Jeremy called Katherine's attention to them, Sofia eyeing the other women suspiciously. The Gilbert siblings removed their masks and Jeremy looked at Lucy. "Hey, sorry can we talk to our sister?" He asked casually.
Lucy eyed Sofia back before turning around and walking back inside the house. Katherine smiled at them, trying to act like their sister. "What is it, Jeremy? Sofia?" She stood up straighter.
"We have a message from Stefan." Sofia said and crossed her arms over her chest, watching Katherine's reaction.
"Oh?" The older vampire raised her eyebrow, watching the siblings with suspicious eyes. She could tell they were up to something.
"He and Damon want you to meet them at the edge of the lake by the woods. They brought the moonstone." Jeremy informed Katherine.
She flickered her chocolate eyes between the siblings. "And why are you two their little messengers?" Katherine asked.
"Because they know we're not afraid of you." Jeremy said bravely and Sofia would have smiled proudly if they weren't on a mission.
Katherine smirked, finding the situation entertaining. "Hmm, you Gilbert men, so courageous. How's John by the way? Were they able to sew his finger his back on?" Katherine stepped closer to Jeremy and stroked his tie.
Before Katherine could take another threatening step closer, Sofia moved to stand between them. Her jaw was clenched and a protective glare was in her sharp eyes. "Hands off." She sneered. Katherine stepped back.
Sofia was usually a calm person but when it came to her loved ones, she didn't hesitate to show her protectiveness. This made her both admirable and dumb. Because here she stood, standing up to a vampire much older and stronger than her.
Sofia thought Katherine wouldn't hesitate to kill her, but the Petrova vampire knew better than to do so. Katherine was not wishing to die.
But that didn't mean she couldn't mess with Sofia. Katherine's smirk widened, reaching over to twirl a strand of Sofia's soft hair. "Hmm, protective and brave." She tilted her head deliberately watching Sofia's glare harden. "You're exactly his type, you know."
Her glare softened in confusion and she swatted Katherine's hand away. "Excuse me?" Sofia asked, stepping away with her brother's arm in her grasp.
Katherine just winked at her before walking away. Jeremy and Sofia exchanged confused looks before they turned around to leave the scene. Jeremy started to text Damon as Sofia pondered on Katherine's words.
Suddenly they were grabbed by their arms and pulled to their right, Sofia instinctively stepping in front of Jeremy. When she saw it was just Elena and Bonnie, she relaxed.
She eyed her sister. "What are you doing here?" She groaned. "I knew Ric couldn't keep an eye on you!"
Elena scoffed loudly. "I should be asking you that. What the hell is going on?" She looked at the three.
"We're killing Katherine, once and for all." Bonnie answered her friend.
Elena's eyes widened. "You guys are trying to kill her here?"
"We saw an opportunity and we knew we had to take it." Jeremy shrugged but that only made Elena angry.
"Okay, stop with the 'we', are you guys crazy? You're going to get yourselves killed." Elena stressed.
Sofia stepped in with look directed to her sister. "You are going to get yourself killed Elena if you don't go back home. Are you forgetting Katherine hates your guts?" Sofia tried to not sound harsh, knowing Elena just wanted them safe. But what they were doing tonight would ensure that everyone would be safe.
Elena frowned in disagreement. "No, how am I supposed to feel if one of you guys get hurt because of me?" She asked them
Jeremy sighed. "It's not just you anymore, Elena. She's messed with all of us, she has to stopped."
Before Sofia could try to reassure her sister, Elena screamed in agony. This made the them jump in shock. "Elena?" Sofia yelled, reaching for her.
Blood seeped through the fabric of Elena's top from a wound that magically opened. Two more appeared and her sister fell to the ground in pain. Sofia rushed to seat her sister at a nearby table in panic and held her hand. Elena squeezed it like her life depended on it.
Sofia turned her head. "What the hell is happening to her?" She yelled frantically, looking at Bonnie specifically since it was obviously magic.
Bonnie gasped in realization before looking at the boy next to her. "Jeremy! It's Katherine, she's linked to Katherine! Get them to stop, now!"
Jeremy took off to stop the Salvatores from killing Katherine and Bonnie sat beside Sofia, trying to calm Elena down.
Sofia felt herself start to tear up at the sight of her little sister in so much pain, then an idea came to her. She bit into her wrist and moved it to Elena's mouth. "Drink Elena! It will heal you." She encouraged.
After Elena drank the blood, the wounds healed up making the three girls sigh in relief. But a few seconds later the wounds appeared again, and Elena whimpered.
"What the -" Sofia's eyes widen.
Katherine must have a very powerful witch on her side. Sofia didn't know what to do now that her blood wasn't healing Elena's wounds for more than five seconds.
"Annie, it hurts." Elena cried to her sister and Sofia placed more pressure to the back wound and stroked Elena's hair, whispering calming words to her.
Bonnie frowned. "I can't break the spell, Elena. I'm sorry but I can try to take some of the pain away. Okay?" She grabbed Elena's hands and started chanting words neither Gilberts understood.
Jeremy ran back to them from the house out of breath. "Are you okay?" He looked at Elena worryingly.
"Are they?" Elena asked, despite her unfortunate situation.
Jeremy sat on the other side of the bleeding doppelgΓ€nger. "They're stuck in there with her." He looked at Bonnie."You were right, Katherine had a witch link Elena to her. "
Sofia's jaw clenched at that statement and Bonnie stood up quickly. "The girl I saw, the one inside! Stay with her, keep pressure on her shoulder!" The witch instructed Jeremy before turning on her heel to leave.
"Where are you going?" Jeremy and Sofia asked in unison, both their hands covered in Elena's blood.
"There's another witch here! I'm going to find her!" Bonnie exclaimed and rushed back inside the party without a glance at them.
Sofia shouted. "Be careful!"
Jeremy removed the Gilbert ring that cheats death off his finger and gave it to Elena.
"No." Elena weakly protested.
"Take it, you need it more than I do right now." Jeremy insisted, pushing the ring closer to Elena.
But she refused. "No Jeremy. What I need is for you to be safe." Elena looked at him sternly.
Sofia shook her head at her siblings, sucking in a sharp breath. "It wouldn't work. The ring doesn't work on the supernatural. Elena's a doppelgΓ€nger." She told them, handing the ring back to Jeremy. He needed to wear it.
The fifteen year old sighed in defeat and used one hand to apply pressure to Elena's back wound and the other to hold Sofia's hand.
Sofia squeezed his hand before looking at a panting Elena "You're going to be okay Elena, just keep your eyes open. Bonnie's working on breaking the spell. " Sofia insisted and kissed her sister's temple. Jeremy and Sofia shared a look, both wondering if Bonnie has found the witch yet.

Lucy, the other witch and the woman Sofia saw Katherine with, removed the spell she put on Elena and took down Katherine. The Salvatore brothers informed Sofia that they were locking her in the tomb.
Sofia was beyond confused on why they didn't kill her but they told her that Katherine has another agenda that concerned everyone. So she was needed alive unfortunately.
The party had died down immensely so there wasn't much people outside like before.
The Gilbert sisters were now walking towards where Sofia parked her car. The vampire held her younger sister close to her by her arm as Elena talked to their brother on the phone.
Seeing Elena bleed so much and not being able to do anything was one of Sofia's worst fears. Watching her loved ones suffer and being absolutely useless. She really thought that becoming a vampire would help her protect everyone but she's starting to see that she can't save everyone, no matter how much she tries. It's the bitter truth.
Sofia went to unlock her car once they arrived next to it, letting Elena go. "Yeah, you can drive Bonnie home. Annie and I are going straight to bed, bye." Elena told their brother before hanging up.
Just as the vampire opened the front seat door of the car, she heard a thud behind her. Turning around quickly her eyes widen when she saw her sister unconscious on the gravel ground, lifting her eyes to see a masked man stalking towards her.
Sofia didn't hesitate to grab the man's head and hit it hard against the car's side. His body fell limp by her front tire and he left a blood stain on her window.
Sofia reached for Elena but someone behind her yanked her back by her waist. She gasped when the person injected vervain in her neck before she could fight back. Sofia fell backwards into the man's arms, black overtaking her vision and a fuzzy feeling spreading through out her body.
Unknown to her, her birthmark glowed dimly as the two soulmates were to meet soon.
