Raging Bulls:
New York, America:
"Good work, Fubuki. You've improved a lot."
Shu complimented as he panted slightly and wiped the sweat off his forehead before picking up Spryzen from the floor.
He and Fubuki were having a beybattle and the young blonde had just given him a ring-out finish.
"Thanks, Shu."
Fubuki smiled as he picked up Forneus and they both sat on the bench in the training room. As the older red-eyed male took a sip from his water bottle, Fubuki looked at him with concerned eyes as he asked,
"Hey Shu, is your health alright? You've been looking paler than usual."
"Hmm? I'm fine, Fubuki. There's nothing to worry about. Don't worry."
Shu replied as he brushed him off before glancing at his reflection in the glass walls of the room. Indeed, he looked paler than usual. Not only that, if he was being honest with himself then he'd also been having headaches and body aches lately.
The crimson-eyed albino couldn't understand what exactly was wrong with him so he ended up concluding that it must be due to him doing the Raging Bulls work and mentoring students without having proper breaks.
He thought that if he'd take proper rest and take care of himself then he would definitely be fine.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
A few days later:
As Shu was doing some paperwork in his office like usual, he couldn't help but feel as if his vision was going to give out any second and his headache was just making things worse for him.
'Maybe...I need some water.'
He thought as he stood up and went to the coffee table to pour himself a glass of water. There was also a basket full of fruits beside the jug and in the basket, there was also a fruit knife present.
The albino suddenly felt his vision go blurry as he held his head with one hand and instead of grabbing the glass, he ended up brushing his hand against the fruit knife which resulted in him getting a fairly big, bleeding scratch.
"Ow!"
He groaned and held his hand as the blood came gushing out awfully fast. But Shu was not the type to panic in situations like these. He was mature enough to go to his desk and get himself a first-aid kit without making a lot of crying and painful sounds.
Shu then sat down on his chair and began to treat his new wound. But to his surprise, the injury won't stop bleeding even after applying the medicine. His wound ended up soaking the bandage completely and the blood even started to drip through the bandage.
"What the-"
Shu's red eyes widened as he slowly began to feel weaker due to the constant blood loss. Luckily, there was a knock on the door and before he knew it, Fubuki walked in along with (Y/N).
"Hey Shu, do you thi- SHU?!"
(Y/N) began speaking but she cut herself off as soon as she saw the albino's bloodied hand.
"What happened to you?!"
Fubuki asked as he and the girl rushed to the albino but before Shu could respond, he passed out.
"W-What do we do now?"
Fubuki panicked as (Y/N) was quick to instruct,
"Help me get him on my back. I can carry him. We're taking him to the hospital. Now!"
The blonde nodded as he helped the older female and both of them rushed out of the Bulls and straight to the hospital.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Timeskip:
At the hospital:
"Is he alright now, doctor?"
"What happened to him?"
Both (Y/N) and Fubuki asked simultaneously to the doctor who'd just come out of Shu's ward with a clipboard and pen in his hand. He had a grave look on his face as he replied,
"I'm sorry to say this but...Mr. Kurenai has leukemia."
"W-What?"
Both the blonde boy's and the (h/c) haired girl's jawdropped as their eyes widened in shock. Somehow regaining her composure, (Y/N) asked,
"Y-you mean blood cancer? B-but he can be cured, r-right? It's n-not in the serious stage yet, r-right?"
"It's in the first stage only. I'm glad that you brought him here on time. However, I can't guarantee that we'll be able to cure him or not. We can give him the medications. It'll depend on his willpower and his body's immune response to the medicines."
"A-alright, doctor. Can we go and see him?"
"I apologise but you can't. Not right now. He's sleeping and we'd like for him to rest as he's lost quite the amount of blood from the injury."
"O-okay."
The girl responded as the doctor nodded before he left. Fubuki placed his hand on the girl's shoulder as he said in sympathy,
"It's alright, (Y/N). Shu is one of the strongest people out there when it comes to willpower. I'm sure he'll be fine."
"I hope so too."
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The next day:
"Hey..."
A weak voice greeted the (h/c) haired girl who'd just walked into the ward with a basket full of fruits in her hand. As she closed the door behind her, her eyes turned to the albino who was lying in the bed with a blood drip attached to his left arm.
Sighing softly, she made her way towards the bed and sat on the chair beside it.
"How do you feel now?"
(Y/N) asked as she placed the basket on the bedside counter and looked at Shu who gave her a weak smile.
"I'd be lying if I said I was fine. My body is aching and I don't even have the strength to stand up and walk around."
"You should've seen a doctor sooner instead of pushing yourself like that."
The girl said as her eyebrows furrowed and she crossed her arms. The albino just chuckled lightly before cough took over him.
"Easy. Shu take it easy. No need to speak if you don't feel like doing it."
"It's nothing really. Just slight cough."
He responded after his coughing was gone and his breathing returned to normal.
"So...what did the doctors say?"
"They said that if the blood transfusion doesn't work then they'll have to go for the stem cell transplantation."
"Oh..."
(Y/N)'s face dropped as she placed her hand on top of Shu's and gave it a gentle squeeze. Even though she didn't say it, Shu understood her concerns.
"Don't worry though. Stem cell transplantation surgeries generally have a high success rate. I'll be fine."
"It's easy for you to say. I...just can't bear the thought of losing you y'know."
"I know. I'm sorry for worrying you and everyone else so much..."
Shu's voice trailed off as he frowned and squeezed her hand back gently. The (h/c) haired girl just stared at him before she said,
"You're apologising for something that wasn't even your fault."
"Still..."
"Alright. If you're not gonna stop talking about things like this then you better shut up and have rest."
(Y/N) scolded as she frowned back at him which made him shut up instantly.
"Alright. If you say so...(Y/N)."
--------------------------------------------------------------------
A few weeks later:
The doctors continued to give the required medications and treatments to Shu but his condition only seemed to worsen.
It started with him coughing occasionally during the day which eventually grew into him coughing up blood much more often.
In the end, the doctors declared that he was nearly in the terminal stage of leukemia and surgery was the last hope for him.
So today was the day when the fate of Shu Kurenai would be decided. Today was the day of the stem cell transplantation surgery.
Along with (Y/N) and Fubuki, Valt and Xander had also come along as they were equally concerned for their friend's health.
Just as Fubuki, Valt and (Y/N) were talking to Shu, Xander came into the ward. Apparently, he'd just returned after talking with the doctors about the surgery.
The blading champion turned to look at him as he asked with concern evident in his voice,
"What did they say?"
"They said that according to Shu's physique and the condition of leukemia, the surgery stands a 50% chance of success."
The taller male responded as he also sat on one of the chairs beside the albino's bed.
"Well, 50% isn't that bad."
Shu responded in a weak voice as he mustered up his energy to smile at the four worried faces of his friends.
He was all skin and bones now. And yet, he didn't show the slightest signs of worry or desperation about his death. Maybe because he knew that losing control over his emotions in a situation like this would be of no use.
As silence followed, the (h/c) haired girl decided to break it by holding Shu's hand and asking,
"Are you nervous?"
"A little bit."
"Then don't be. Everything's gonna be fine."
"Yes, I believe in it as well."
The albino responded. Valt looked at him and slammed his hands on the side of the bed as he said,
"Shu!"
This took not only the said albino but the rest of the people in the room by surprise too as all of them looked at him with surprised looks before Shu said,
"...yes?"
"You better make it through the surgery! I promise that I'll get you Spryzen beybreads after you recover!"
That was something which made Shu, (Y/N) and Xander laugh. That was typical Valt Aoi. But Fubuki just blinked as he watched the other three laugh. To the blonde, it was something he hadn't expected from the champion.
After about 30 minutes, a nurse came in and told them that it was time for Shu's surgery. They all hugged Shu one last time before leaving.
As (Y/N) was about to leave as well, the crimson-eyed albino held her hand weakly as he said,
"Wait...I want to tell you something."
"What is it?"
"If I...don't make it...I want you to take care of Spryzen for me."
Shu said with a look that told the girl that deep down, the albino knew the seriousness of his disease. It was now when she saw the vulnerable look on his face.
'So...he was putting up a facade in front of Fubuki, Valt and Xander. Even to the end, he didn't want to worry them...'
The (e/c) eyed girl frowned as she turned to fully face him before leaning down and pressing her forehead against his,
"Don't say that Shu. You will make it through. Believe in yourself."
"I...also have one more thing..."
"But-"
"(Y/N), please. It's important."
"Okay. Go on."
"I know this isn't the best time to say this and I also wanted this to be different but...I want you to know this before I...lose the chance. Ever since we were kids, I've always had an attraction towards you which as we grew up, I realised was love. I never confessed my feelings because I was afraid that you'd reject me and I'd ruin our friendship forever. So I always kept my feelings to myself. If I make it through the surgery, I'd like to become your boyfriend, (Y/N). I...I love you."
(Y/N)'s eyes were wide open by the time Shu finished. The albino looked in the girl's eyes for her answer but before she could respond, a doctor came in with a nurse as he said,
"Miss, it's time for the patient's surgery."
And before the duo knew it, a nurse was leading the girl out.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
As the surgery was in progress, Valt paced around impatiently in the hallway while the other three were sitting on the benches, praying in their minds that everything would be fine.
Valt: "I hope everything goes smoothly."
Xander: "Don't worry, Valt. It will. Shu is not someone who gives up easily."
(Y/N): "Yeah. That's something he learnt from you, Valt."
The girl said with a small smile on her face, easing the tension in the atmosphere a little. When they turned to look at the Forneus blader, they saw his hands clasped tightly as he looked like he was the most worried.
(Y/N): "Don't worry, Fubuki. Shu will make it. I just know it."
Fubuki: "I hope you're right."
After the surgery:
As soon as the red light of the operation theatre board turned off and a doctor walked out, all four teenagers rushed up to him and asked in unison,
"How is he doctor?"
"I'm sorry to say this but Mr. Kurenai couldn't make it."
The doctor said in a quiet tone as he looked down, feeling guilty for not being able to save a patient so young.
"Y-you're lying, right?! Say that you're lying!"
Valt's eyes widened in shock as he almost lunged at the doctor but Xander held him back,
"Calm down! It's no use Valt! He's gone!"
Tears were streaming down his eyes as well but he was trying his best to stay strong. The doctor bowed in shame as he said,
"We underestimated the limits of the cancer. It had...spread far beyond the limits of surgery."
(Y/N) dropped on her knees as soon as the realisation of Shu being no longer with them hit her. Fubuki was quick to hug her as he said,
"H-he...is...g-gone..."
"It can't be..."
The (h/c) haired girl cried as she hugged the younger blonde who was quick to return the gesture.
'I never got to say this back to you. I...I love you too, Shu...'

Alternate ending:
"The surgery was a success. Mr. Kurenai has made it through."
The doctor said with a smile on his face as the wonder boy jumped excitedly and cheered,
"YAY!"
"I knew it! Shu would make it!"
Xander grinned as Fubuki let out a heavy sigh of relief before smiling and asking the doctor,
"Can we go and see him?"
"Sure. But make sure to not be too loud."
"That warning is for you, Valt."
The (h/c) haired girl laughed as Fubuki and Xander joined while the blunette pouted before they headed inside to meet up with the albino.
As they went inside, they saw Shu lying on the hospital bed in nearly the same way as he was before the surgery. Except this time, he had a smile on his face.
"Hey, guys..."
"Shu! I'm so happy that you made it!"
Valt exclaimed as big round tears rolled down his eyes and he nearly jumped on the poor albino had it not been for the orange-haired male holding him back in an instant.
The crimson-eyed blader let out a small laugh as Fubuki came by his side and said,
"You scared all of us so bad Shu..."
"I'm sorry. But hey, look at me now. I'm alive and well now."
He said, trying to be light-hearted as the young blonde held back his emotional tears before getting up and letting the (e/c) eyed girl come by his mentor's side.
"(Y/N)..."
Shu breathed out as the girl leaned closer to his ear and began,
"I'm...so happy that you didn't leave us Shu...and about my answer..."
If an ECG had been attached to him, it would've recorded an erratic heartbeat. The last words of (Y/N) made the albino happier than he was after beating the cancer.
"...I love you too."

I'm sorry but I just can't write a story with an angsty ending. It makes me cry too. (โ 'โ ๏ผโ ฯโ ๏ผโ ๏ฝโ )
That's why I always write bittersweet stories with two endings. ๐คง
I'm sorry if I made you wait too long. I'm sorry if you didn't like it or if this oneshot was cringe. I'm also sorry for my terrible grammar. ๐
Anyways vote, comment, share and maybe....follow me too? All the characters belong to Hiro Morita, only the story plot is mine.
Stay safe and have a nice day/noon/evening/night.
Sayonara, bug out.
