"They... they stole our song!" Alaska said, shocked.
As the Seas0n began to perform, the girls of Bittersweet were frozen in their seats.
"Now we not only just have to do better than them in the same song, but it also looks like we copied them because they went first," Riley muttered. "This is probably worse case scenario."
This was actually the first time for Mya to watch Seas0n as a group perform.
But unfortunately, she could see perfectly as to why they won the last challenge.
As a group, they were incredibly all rounded and synchronized. There were no obvious flaws that could be noticed while they performed and it also helped that if there was something that could be considered less perfect, the other members of the group covered it.
"They're a perfect group," Mya muttered. "Not only are they flawless as performers, but as a group, they all work incredibly well together."
Lanhua nodded in agreement.
"But it feels like they really are just covering the song," Robin said quietly.
Luckily for all of them, they hadn't been mic'd up just yet so there wouldn't be any drama or controversies.
"When we perform it, we make sure to add a Bittersweet touch," Mari whispered. "And by doing so, we are going to beat them."
Of course that was assuming there would be no flaws in the performance.
All the girls watched as Izzy finished off their performance in the centre position and the music died down.
The cheers from the crowds exploded and filled the entire room as Seas0n took their bows.
"Let's hear from the judges!" Dahyun beamed.
They all turned to JYP first, who had a grin on his face.
"Your performance was exceptional. That song itself is hard to perform due to its intensity and difficulty to sing and dance. Along with that, you need to worry about a concept change! But you guys nailed it perfectly and made sure that the strong points were strong. I'm very impressed."
The audience clapped politely, all of them taking careful notice that the comments were all positive.
"Stray Kids?"
Jisung was handed a mic and the idol grinned, looking at the Seas0n members.
"You guys really did amazing and I'm so impressed at how you were able to perform such a difficult song."
He shared a look with the other Stray Kids members and they all nodded.
"However, the members and I feel that we have yet to see a performance by Seas0n and not just a cover. We feel like you guys haven't added your own touch to the songs that you have sung so far."
At this, Seas0n became visibly shaken.
"Its not that you guys did a bad job," Jisung reassured, quick to notice their surprised faces. "It's just that there were missed opportunities to make it your song."
Seas0n nodded, bowed, and then were gestured off the stage.
At that time, Bittersweet had been moved into the wings for their turn.
Riley turned to them, smiling.
"We can do this girls. We seen their performance and now we just do ours ten times better."
The five other girls nodded and then geared up for the performance.
"Please join me in welcoming the other group competing for their debut, Bittersweet!"
The six girls walked out confidently, waving to the crowds and bowing in the judges' direction.
"Mix it together, salty and fresh, hi! We are Bittersweet!"
The audience cheered for the girls who were smiling brightly.
"Welcome back to the stage!" Sana beamed. "Mya, can you tell us what song you will be performing today?"
Mya nodded, a bit starstruck that her idol was speaking directly to her.
"Today, we chose a song to show off Bittersweet's versatility! After the first challenge, we are ready to give a performance that shows that we are equally worthy of debuting as Seas0n!"
Mya turned to look straight into the camera, a confident gleam in her eyes.
"Seas0n, you guys are beyond amazing. We're so honoured that we get to fight for this spot against you; but that doesn't mean we won't simply give up."
Mya turned to face the judges, making sure to keep an equal length of eye contact for all of them.
"We also chose O.O for the debut challenge. Please enjoy our performance!"
Sana gasped a little and brought her mic up quickly.
"It seems as if we have a challenge on our hands! Is our audience ready to see Bittersweet's counter?"
As the cheers continued to crescendo, the girls got into formation.
With a nod to the tech people on the side, the music started.
And just as they had performed for Stray Kids, the girls brought a 110% effort.
As they sang and danced, O.O was no longer an NMIXX song, but a Bittersweet song.
It seemed that all the girls had that kind of talent; the ability to change a song by someone else and perform it so well that it becomes a song of their own.
The song seemed to flow out of them and draw in their audience.
Their infectious smiles, their talents.
Riley's powerful leaderlike charisma, Robin's overwhelming stage presence, Lanhua's dynamic rap, Alaska's smooth dancing, Mari's irresistible centre quality, and finally Mya's honey-like vocal tone.
All of it together added up into one star studded group.
...assuming that Mya got through her high note, of course.
Currently, they had just gotten to the concept change part.
Mya was smiling as wide as she could in order to hide her nerves.
Which seemed to be working out okay, for her.
At least until the hook approached.
As Mari moved out of the centre part for Mya's big moment, the girl took a deep breath and then...
A perfect, high quality, A5 was hit.
Equally as good as the original.
The song continued and with a burst of energy as well.
When the song finished, the volume of the audience had seemed to increase and all the girls hurried into a group hug.
"Judges?"
JYP picked up his microphone to speak, but no words came out.
"You girls have rendered me speechless," he started. "In just a week, you've gone and prepared an award worthy performance. The only thing I'll say is that at times, you're smiling in places that don't need such a happy front. So just be careful of where you're exhibiting certain expressions."
The Stray Kids members glanced at each other before Jeongin decided to speak.
"Myself and the other Stray Kids members all agree that you guys somehow have improved your performance from when we had last seen it. We're all really impressed at how you were still able to go the next level up."
He turned to Mya, unable to contain the growing smile on his face.
"Especially, you, Mya. You were struggling to hit that high note last time and today you came in and aced it. And thanks to that, you provided a wave of energy for your entire team that allowed you guys to continue to ride on a high until the end."
Jeongin put down the mic as applause shattered throughout the audience.
"In the meantime, let's check out the next challenge!"
Seas0n was welcomed back onto the stage as the screen behind them began to play a video.
"Hi SSS!"
Robin's eyes widened significantly at the sight of THE Jeon Jungkook on the screen.
"I'm here to announce the next challenge of SSS. As you all know, this show is trying to find not only the best performers, but the best producers. So for the next challenge, whoever wins the debut challenge gets a chance to work with me on your final song performance! We can work together to write lyrics, create a melody, or if you already have a song put together, I can give you some feedback. Good luck Bittersweet and Seas0n!"
The screen faded to black and Robin looked at her members with wide eyes.
"You heard it here! The winner of the debut challenge gets to work with legendary idol, Jungkook on their signal song!"
The audience exploded into cheers and the Bittersweet girls shared a look with each other. Being able to work with Jungkook would be a huge opportunity that they couldn't miss out on.
"At this point, all of the audience votes have been tallied! Shall we see which team will get the advantage for the next challenge?"
Bittersweet crowded in together holding hands.
"Please be us," Mya whispered.
The screen flashed split 50/50 for Bittersweet vs Seas0n.
As the votes began to spin rapidly, Mya's heart rate picked up.
"The winner is..."
The screen stopped and then the winner's side flashed.
"Bittersweet by twenty votes!"
All of the girls instantly perked up and turned to the audience as fast as they could, their thanks full of fervour.
"However, the other 50% has yet to be decided! Judges?"
JYP and Stray Kids looked at each other and nodded their heads.
"Both Stray Kids and I agree: the winners of the debut challenge and the Jungkook advantage are... Bittersweet!"
Mya didn't really know what happened next. In fact the only thing she knew was that someone was screaming out of pure joy, someone was on the floor crying, and she was being hugged by at least three members.
They had won their first challenge. They had won a humongous advantage. They were on the right track to debuting.
And all she could do was allow for feelings of relief and triumph to flow her.
Out of the corner of her eye when she peeked over Riley's shoulder, she could see Jeongin looking at her and smiling softly, his eyes full of compassion and care.
