Prologue

"Happy birthday, sweetheart," Brian Rogers, Hannalynn's father, smiled as he handed his now 10 year old daughter her very first keyboard.

"No way!" Hannalynn exclaimed. "This is mine?!"

"Sure is," Brian nodded. "Tyler and I already have our own, so now it's your turn."

"Thank you thank you thank you!" Hannalynn threw her arms around her father before pulling away and opening the long box. She pulled out her new Yamaha keyboard as her father put together the stand. Once he was finished, Hannalynn excitedly placed her new prized possession on top of it and raced to the outlet to plug it in.

"Go on, play a C chord," Brian insisted. Hannalynn placed her small fingers down on the white keys and played the chord, her smile widening. She then began to play other chords and the beginning of Für Elise as her father watched her proudly.

Brian and his wife, Paula, were both musicians since they were around Hannalynn's age. The two had met when they played for the same band and toured the country together in their early adulthood, Brian being the lead trumpet player—who could also play bass—and Paula as their keyboardist. They claimed that tours always brought soulmates together, which was basically Hannalynn's version of happily ever after instead of some hokey fairytale.

After touring for a few years, Brian and Paula decided to settle down and start a family. The two were happily married once their firstborn, Tyler, arrived, and when he was old enough they began to teach him bass and piano. Once Hannalynn was born, the two musicians did the same thing and created a very musically talented family.

"Woah, Hanna got her first keyboard?" Tyler asked as he and Paula entered the garage.

"Yup, and soon enough she'll be going on tours with a band of her own," Brian said with a laugh as he put an arm around his wife.

Hannalynn laughed. "Will I be meeting my soulmate on this tour?"

"Like we've said before, Han, tours are the place to meet your soulmate, so you never know," Paula said with a wink.

"I can't wait to go on tour, then," the young musician smiled before continuing to play on her new keyboard.

Five years later, Hannalynn Rogers was still playing on her Yamaha keyboard in her garage while singing along with her older brother Tyler, who was singing and playing his bass.

After going through another few measures, Hannalynn stopped playing. "Wait, I want to change something." She grabbed her pencil off her music stand and started to erase the notes in front of her. Tyler walked over as Hannalynn changed the two eighth notes to one and a sixteenth note.

"Now are you done tweaking our song so I can get back to singing uninterrupted?" Tyler asked.

Hannalynn shrugged. "If I find something I don't like again I'm going to change it. I just felt this change worked better with the lyrics."

"Whatever you say, Hanna," Tyler went back to where he was moments before and was about to play again when the door leading to the house opened and Brian stepped out.

"Sorry to interrupt, but your mother and I are leaving tonight to Ontario and we have to do some last minute packing," Brian began. "And as I was packing I realized I'm running low on valve oil. Would one of you mind going to pick that up at the music store before we leave?"

"Yeah, I can do it," Hannalynn offered as she unplugged her keyboard.

"Thank you, Hanna," Brian smiled as she grabbed her bike. "Don't forget it's Blue Juice!"

"I won't!" Hannalynn called back before riding out of the garage and down the road. She rode for about twenty minutes before reaching their local music store in Toronto. Hannalynn locked her bike to the rack and headed towards the door. Just as she was about to pull the door handle, she noticed a poster on the door of a band called Calpurnia. The kids on it looked around her age, and underneath their band name said: "Want to join our band? Auditions are Friday May 25 inside the music store!"

The audition intrigued Hannalynn, and the poster also said the band tours, just like her parents had when they were younger. Hannalynn had always wanted to go on tour like her parents, and part of her wondered if her parents' silly beliefs on finding your soulmate on tour was true. She snapped a picture with her phone of the poster before heading inside the store and grabbing her father's Blue Juice valve oil.

"Hey, Fred," Hannalynn greeted her classmate at the register, who was the son of the store owner.

"Hi Hanna," Fred returned the greeting as he scanned the Blue Juice.

"So I noticed that poster about Calpurnia auditions, what do you know about that?" Hannalynn asked as she handed Fred her money.

"They're some band of kids our age, and one of them is on that show Stranger Things or something," Fred shrugged before handing Hannalynn her change and bag with the Blue Juice inside.

"Really?" Hannalynn's eyes went wide at the mention of her brother's favorite Netflix show. "I'm interested in auditioning, what about you?"

Fred shrugged. "The only instrument I'm somewhat good at it is my acoustic, but I don't think they need one, so I'm out."

"You never know unless you try, Fred," Hannalynn replied.

"I'm fine, but good luck, I'm sure you'll do great," Fred said.

"Thanks, Fred, see you soon," Hannalynn waved before leaving the store and biking back to her house. She quickly gave her father his valve oil and said goodbye to her parents before racing up to her bedroom.

Hannalynn sat at her desk and opened her laptop and began to search up Calpurnia. Sure enough, Fred was right; Finn Wolfhard from Stranger Things was part of the band, along with Jack Anderson, Malcom Craig, and Ayla Tesler-Mabe. They already had three songs released, and one was just released that day on YouTube. Hannalynn listened to it and was already in love with how they sounded, and before she knew it, she found herself practicing her keyboard for hours.

"Hanna, it's one in the morning," Tyler said groggily as he pushed opened the garage door. "Go to sleep and practice later."

"Tyler," Hannalynn turned to face her sleepy 17 year old brother. "I have to be good enough to get into this band, so I'm going to practice until my fingers fall off. Got it?"

"Then at least turn down the volume," Tyler groaned before shutting the door. Hannalynn resumed practicing and writing her song that she wanted to audition with for Calpurnia before falling asleep against the keys.

She awoke a few hours later and went straight back to writing and practicing, and she did this everyday until the day of her audition, which was the day that changed Hannalynn's life forever.
