REAL LIFE

Hannalynn stood outside Jack's house and knocked on his front door with her Yamaha keyboard case under one arm. She saw a tall blonde boy run through the house and approach his front door with a glass window on it. Jack unlocked the door and smiled at Hannalynn.

"Hey Hannalynn, come on in," Jack held open the door.

"Jack that rhymed!" Malcolm yelled from downstairs. Jack lead Hannalynn down into his basement where the others were setting up.

The other three greeted Hannalynn as she set up her stand and placed her keyboard on top of it. Finn kindly plugged it in for her before tuning his instrument.

"Okay, so we've been rehearsing all of the songs we've already written since we're going to be traveling soon," Finn explained as he handed her pieces of sheet music. "Ayla wrote down your parts, I hope you can sightread."

"Every musician has to at some point, right?" Hannalynn replied with a smile. "I'll be alright."

Finn nodded and then announced they'd be doing a run through of City Boy first. Malcolm counted them off by tapping his drumsticks together before the beat began. Hannalynn followed along by sight-reading the sheet music and accidentally started singing along with the rest of them when she was supposed to just be sight-reading.

Once the song was over, everyone looked over at her and Hannalynn felt herself sink in her seat.

"Sorry, I just got carried away," she muttered, her face going red with embarrassment.

"No, it's perfectly fine, because you were amazing," Jack said with a smile, to which she smiled back.

"You can sing, play, and write music? Triple threat," Ayla commented.

Malcolm's eyes went wide. "FINN I HAVE AN IDEA!" Finn turned to face him and raised an eyebrow as he walked over. "COME HERE CAPTAIN, WE NEED TO DISCUSS ON THE BOW!"

"What is he talking about?" Hannalynn whispered to Jack.

"Nobody ever really knows," Jack replied. "But he's Malcolm so we all love him."

"Malcolm just had the greatest idea, and I need to discuss with Han about it alone," Finn said. "Let's take five."

Ayla, Malcolm, and Jack all left the room and headed upstairs, leaving Hannalynn and Finn alone.

"So, Malcolm proposed a great idea that I want to see if you're up to," Finn began as he sat in front of her.

"Fire away, Finnlard," Hannalynn replied as he gave her a glare, which made her laugh.

"Anyway," he continued. "We all decided to start a fun 'project' where each of us writes a song individually, and once we're done we're going to share it with the group and see if we want to perform it when we go on our trip in a few months.

"So Malcolm suggested that you also write your own song, since you're so good at it, and maybe you could perform it solo at our performance! What do you think?"

"I think that sounds crazy," Hannalynn said with a nervous laugh.

Finn tilted his head to the side. "Why?"

"I have stage fright when I perform alone," Hannalynn admitted. "I don't know, I guess I'm afraid people will hate what I have to give them."

"But you're so talented, and you deserve to share your gift of music with the world," Finn replied. "At least think about it, for me?"

Hannalynn hesitated. "Okay."

Finn grinned. "Thanks, Han. You're the best!" He stood up and called the others to come back. "And we were actually going to work on writing our songs after we do run throughs of the others, so give it a go?"

"I'll try," Hannalynn nodded as the other three came back in. After their run throughs, Hannalynn sat down at her keyboard and started to play a few chords before forming a tune from the notes. She wrote them down and continued for a while before Jack stood behind her with his phone.

"Can I take a picture for the Calpurnia Instagram?" He asked.

"Sure," Hannalynn nodded before going back to work.

"YOU BETTER SEND THAT TO ME JACK SO I CAN POST IT ON THE INSTAGRAM!" Malcolm shouted from across the room.

"WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING WHEN YOU'RE RIGHT THERE?" Ayla asked.

"SORRY!" Malcolm then went back to work along with the rest of them.
