Maya Yoshida smiled, effortlessly disappearing and reappearing behind him, her katana pointing menacingly at his neck.

"Not so fast, handsome," she teased, her voice dripping with playful confidence. "So, you must be the new recruit the boss has been talking about. Unfortunately for you, I won't let you wander in here without a convincing reason to join our ranks."

The Boss chuckled at the scene, clearly entertained. "As I said, Jackie, this is Maya - our blade-wielding beauty." She released Jack and faced him directly. Jack extended his hand and said, "It's an honor to meet you, Ms. Yoshida."

She hesitated before shaking his hand, feeling an undeniable spark between them. "No need for formality."

Intrigued by her presence, Jack watched as Maya straightened her white suit and secured her sword behind her back, then poured herself a glass of rum on the rocks.

While he was still reconciling himself to her earlier attack, Jack's thoughts were interrupted by the Boss addressing the gang members who were handing over their money to Mr. Knucles. "Hey, you lot! Put your wallets away!" His voice cut through the chatter and demanded their immediate attention.

"But let me tell you something, Maya," the boss continued, amusement dancing in his tone. "This guy is no random rookie; he's a cold-blooded killer! Yah!"

Maya leaned forward slightly, her intrigue piqued. Her grip on her glass tightened and a teasing grin flickered across her lips. "In that case, here's the test: 'サムライ・ジャック、お前みたいなヤツが何でこんなギャングと一緒にいるんだ?靴でも売ってろ* (What's a guy like you doing with this gang, Samurai Jack? Shouldn't you be selling shoes?)'.

"I doubt you'll be able to translate."

She added playfully, and as she sipped her drink, savoring her small victory, Jack responded, leaving her momentarily speechless: "You said, 'What's a guy like you doing in this gang, Samurai Jack? Shouldn't you be selling shoes? " He continued, "And to answer your question, Maya, I do not sell shoes. However, as I told your boss, I have dedicated my life to preparing for the day I will face Aku.

"Achieving that goal will undoubtedly change my life." Jack paused, letting the weight of his words sink in before bowing respectfully.

As the realization dawned on the Chicago gangsters - who now understood that they had not only gained a cold-blooded killer (that's what they think XD), but someone fluent in Maya's native tongue.

As it dawned on the Chicago gangsters - who now understood that they had not only gained a cold-blooded killer (that's what they think XD), but someone who spoke Maya's native language fluently - the atmosphere changed. Maya's smirk faded, replaced by a flicker of surprise.

She hadn't expected him to understand her, let alone respond with such conviction. The playful tension in the room crackled like charged air.

"Impressive," she murmured, her voice low and curious. "Not many can understand me or grasp my language."

Jack stood tall, his demeanor calm yet unwavering. "I have spent years honing my skills, both in battle and in understanding. Knowledge can be as sharp a weapon as any blade."

The boss, sensing the connection between them, couldn't help but grin. "He passed?"

The gang watched as Maya looked from her boss to her companions and finally nodded, "Yes, he passed the test." She freed herself from the dresser, her katana glinting in the dim light, and walked to the door, the Chicago gang cheering. Just then, her voice cut through their excitement.

"How about we celebrate with a bite to eat?" she suggested. "I know a place that serves the best ramen in town. It's a bit of a dive, but the flavors are worth it."

Jack's eyes widened in surprise, "Ramen? I assumed there weren't any—"

"Any ramen restaurants in this area?" Maya interjected with a playful grin. "I was also under that impression, but I have my sources if you understand my meaning." "One might be astonished at the discoveries that can be made when one knows where to look."

Jack arched an eyebrow, indicating his interest. "Could you please elaborate on the nature of the business in question?"

"Very well," Maya replied, turning to face him, "I will relate that story to you over dinner."

Before he could respond, Jack's stomach emitted an audible growl, thereby interrupting the moment. The Chicago gangsters were overcome with mirth, while Maya emitted a soft, discreet laugh. Jack exhibited signs of embarrassment, rubbing the back of his neck and muttering, "I could undoubtedly benefit from a nourishing meal."

"Indeed, that is a favorable outcome." The Boss interjected with a clapping of his hands. "Let us not delay any further. Let us prepare the vehicle." "It has been determined that they are departing."

Maya appeared perplexed, inquiring, "I was under the impression that you all wished to accompany us."

"Did I make an erroneous assumption, boys?" The collective response of "no" from the gang was audible as Mr. Pickles began to speak, only to be met with a stern gaze that immediately silenced him.

Thus, in accordance with the instructions provided, the gang proceeded to prepare the vehicle for Maya and Samurai Jack, who proceeded to take his place in the front seat as she initiated the engine and began to drive off with him.

Location (Sinju Palace)

Maya alighted from her vehicle in front of the restaurant. Her white suit provided a stark contrast against the neon lights that flickered above the Sinju Palace. The distinctive aroma of savory broth and grilled meats wafted through the air, stimulating her olfactory senses.

She cast a backward glance at Jack, who emerged with a complex expression of awe, curiosity, and shock. The Japanese restaurant was devoid of any other presence, save for the silence that echoed around it, which constituted a stark contrast to the intense ambiance of their earlier encounter.

"Welcome to Sinju Palace," Maya said, her demeanor reflecting a sense of pride. "The workers are well acquainted with me. I could procure you the most optimal seating arrangement within the establishment."

Upon entering, Samurai Jack observed a distinctive combination of elements within the interior design, including Japanese lanterns and street art, which collectively created a dynamic yet tranquil ambiance that exuded a sense of warmth and comfort.

However, the audible clattering emanating from within the establishment served to elicit a visceral response from Jack, reminiscent of his earlier mortification.

Maya led Jack through the room with a sense of assurance, the soft glow of lanterns providing illumination along the way:

"Wait here. I'll be right back."

He nodded and began looking around to see the place filled with fewer people of 2 or 3, though he couldn't help but smell and drool a bit of the appetizing aromas of grilled meats and stewing broths wafting through the air.

However, his appetite was swiftly extinguished upon encountering a sizable octopus attired in nothing but a chef's bandana.

Startled by his reaction, the Octopus continued preparing sushi as if it were normal, while Samurai Jack felt disturbed by a sea creature mincing and slicing seafood dishes. Subsequently, he was prompted to turn by the application of a gentle tug to his robe.

Upon doing so, he encountered a young boy, who was blindfolded and attired in miniature waiter's garb.

The boy shyly extended a greeting in the form of a wave. Naturally, Jack was cautious not to alarm the child, noting his reserved demeanor and the hesitation he exhibited as he raised his small hand.

"Greetings," Jack said in a soft voice, lowering himself to the child's level. The child's blindfold shifted slightly, allowing a brief glimpse of curious eyes glimmering with wonder.

"Are you a samurai?" the boy inquired, his voice imbued with a curious blend of reverence and wonder. Jack, in a gesture of affirmation, knelt and nodded. "Indeed, I am," he replied. "Might I inquire as to your name?"

Before he could respond, Maya intervened, and the boy immediately approached her with a warm embrace. "Madam-chan!" "Good day, Miyo-kun." Maya gently ruffled Miyo-kun's hair, her face displaying a warm smile.

"What brings you here?" she inquired, assuming a kneeling posture at his level, similar to that which Jack had assumed moments before.

The youngster's demeanor shifted, his shyness momentarily superseded by the glow of her attention. He responded with a cheerful affirmation: "I was waiting for you to come back to play!" "Wait, let me get my mother!" he exclaimed, his enthusiasm evident as he hastened into the kitchen.

Jack emitted a soft chuckle and rose to his full height, "Are you acquainted with this child?" he inquired. Samurai Jack inquired as to the identity of the child's mother, to which she replied in the affirmative, stating that her name was Charlie and that she was employed at the establishment.

"Miyo-kun's mother was being subjected to abuse at the hands of her former spouse following the birth of their child." Maya's voice became more gentle, and her expression took on a serious quality as she proceeded to relate the story, "It has been challenging for them and I do whatever I can to assist anyone in the same position as them."

Samurai Jack nodded in agreement, filling empathy for the child, "They must be grateful to have you protect them," he replied, glancing towards the kitchen where Miyo-kun had darted and turned back to Maya.

Then, he looked away from where Miyo had run into and was met by Maya's new look.

She had changed into a simple kimono in primarily a dark, muted grayish-blue. The kimono features intricate designs on the sleeves and lower portions, including subtle floral and botanical motifs that likely represent nature themes.

The obi, or waist sash, contrasts a rich red with golden and decorative designs around the waist. Regarding her black hair, was neatly pinned up in a classic updo with a white jade hairpin.

This left Jack stunned that he couldn't process his thoughts, as the transformation in Maya was as unexpected as it was striking. The elegance of her attire seemed to enhance her presence, casting her in a regal light that whispered tales of ancient traditions steeped in honor.

It brought a lot of memories of his home, though meeting a woman who tried to kill him earlier seemed to fade away as he felt his heart pounding with each second of Maya wearing a traditional kimono that he didn't realize that he was blushing.

"Y-Your attire is beautiful," he managed to say since he didn't trust himself to say more right now.

Maya offered a gentle smile, her demeanor shifting seamlessly to one of warmth and humility. "Thank you, Jack," she softly replied.

As soon as they took their seats, a server came over, and Maya promptly ordered the waiter to bring her personal waitress in.

Relishing the relaxed atmosphere and the delightful company, she (Maya) starts by handing Samurai Jack some green tea which he accepts as they both begin to drink.

The room features a wooden table at the center with several low chairs that have curved wooden armrests, blending traditional seating arrangements with the floor lined with tatami mats, giving the walls design a square wood paneling, and one side is made up of large translucent shoji screens.

There are recessed shelves built into the wall, housing a few decorative items like ceramics, which add a touch of elegance and simplicity: "I appreciate your inviting me to dinner. It is very considerate of you." Samurai Jack starts, placing the tea down puts his hands together on his lap, and bows slightly in a gesture of thanks.

Making Maya smile, "You're welcome to come here anytime you feel hungry, y'know."

This seemed to surprise the Samurai, as he instantly returned it. As on cue, a blonde waitress approached, her smile warm and welcoming.

"What can I get for you both—" she gasps in bewilderment, "Oh, M-Madam! I-I-I d-didn't think you were coming tonight!"

Maya chuckled lightly, her eyes sparkling with amusement.

"Surprise! I thought it was time to eat, plus Jack here is starving!" she replied, her tone playful yet inviting. The waitress's eyes landed on the Samurai and she felt her cheeks tinged with a hint of pink, "I s-see. W-Well, would he like something to eat?" Maya nodded and then ordered a full-course meal that included:

1. Steaming bowl of tonkatsu ramen

2. Lighter shoyu

3. Soup (Suimono)

4. Sashimi (Otsukuri)

5. Boiled Dish (Nimono)

6. Grilled Dish (Yakimono)

7. Deep-Fried Dish (Agemono)

8. A couple of sushi rolls

9. Gohan: Rice served with additional side dishes.

10. Pickled vegetables (Tsukemono)

11. Miso soup (traditional soup made from miso paste)

12. And for dessert, sweet mochi (Daifuku)

As the waitress walked away, Maya leaned back, her expression contemplative. "So!" She waves it off like it is nothing, which worries the Samurai, who begins to: "Now that we got out of the way. Tell me Jack, what makes you so determined to face Aku?"

Jack's demeanor changed; his eyes grew distant. "Aku isn't just an enemy; he represents everything I oppose. My family," he recalled moments of protecting his father, meeting his mother in the temple, and "my home."

Another memory flashed of the village engulfed in flames.

"—he destroyed it all." He remembered how he had trained under the finest masters in every fighting skill throughout his childhood. "I've trained my entire life for this great opportunity. Once I end him, I will return home."

Maya listened intently, recalling her past, which made her frown at her food, casting a shadow over her eyes. Samurai Jack noticed and widened his eyes, nervously trying to brush it off. "My apologies, I didn't mean to make you feel guilty for me," he said with a nervous smile.

"That's a heavy burden to carry."

Her words startled him, and as Maya finally looked up, he felt a sudden warmth from her—sympathy and respect—as she placed a hand over his. Samurai Jack felt a rush of emotions, an unexpected connection blooming in the space between them.

"It's not just my burden," he replied softly, his voice almost a whisper. "All journeys hold weight; we are shaped by what we endure."

Maya nodded slowly, her gaze fixed on the wall, where shadows danced as the flickering light swayed. "Every scar tells a story," she continues to tell him, "But... do you think you're ready to confront him?"

"I must be," he replied, his voice steady, yet filled with determination. "It's not just about revenge; it's about restoring peace for my people."

Their food arrived, the bowls steaming hot in front of them as Maya let go of her hand from his, feeling her heart race and her face flushed, luckily she distracted the unwanted attention of the Samurai by not wasting any time diving into her food with enthusiasm.

"And here's to restoring balance," she said, raising her chopsticks in a mock toast.

Jack smiled, lifting his cup.

"To unexpected allies."

They clinked their cups together and dug into their meals, the rich flavors enveloping their senses. Maya watched Samurai Jack savor each and every single bite like his life depends on it, her mind racing with thoughts of their earlier encounter.

'Everything happens for a reason.' An elderly woman's voice resonated in her mind as the fiery energy between them transformed into a deeper connection—an understanding born of shared purpose. She realized he might be her only hope for returning home, but...

The worst-case scenario wouldn't be him failing. The thought of her returning to her family lingered in her mind like a shadow, a whisper of doubt that threatened to cloud her newfound resolve.

What happened to her family?

Are they alive?

Or

Will they recognize her?

Many questions she wanted to know how much has changed since she's seen her mother and father, and the part of facing them was something she kept getting anxious about...But never shows it.

"What if you don't succeed?" Maya asked, her voice barely above a murmur, "What if he's too powerful?"

Jack paused, his chopsticks hovering above his bowl.

The question cut deeper than she intended, and he could sense the weight of her concern. "I've faced impossible challenges before," he replied, his tone steady but tinged with the gravity of truth. "Each time, I've found a way. I can't afford to think of failure."

"What if you don't return?" she asked, but he cut her off, eyes intense.

"Then I'll ensure you'd come with me," he said gently. "After all, it's nice...to find and meet someone in the same situation as I am."

Maya nodded, her heart racing as she absorbed his words. His vulnerability revealed a strength that compelled her. "You're brave, Samurai Jack," she said admiringly. "You bear the weight of the world yet stand tall."

He smiled a flicker of gratitude in his eyes.

"And you, Maya, have your been in many battles than I have," Jack sees his reflection on his soup, "We all do. But perhaps together, we can go back to our timeline after I defeat Aku."

Their eyes met, and for a brief moment, only they existed, sharing a common purpose.

Maya finally spoke, "Let's make a promise."

Jack, surprised, listened intently.

"No matter what happens, we face it together, got it?"

He slowly smiles and lifts his tea, "Promise,"

The words sealed their unspoken agreement, as they got back to eating.
