Delilah and Reggie snuck through the streets of Small Heath trying not to be seen by and Blinders who were roaming around.
Over the past few days, the two had been sneaking around during the day and the night. It was clear that they had feelings toward each other, they were just too scared to do anything about it. Delilah had grown slightly annoyed at the boy due to the fact he had gotten himself involved with the Peaky business.
She didn't want him getting hurt, or worse, Tommy hurting him if he found out about them.
Reggie grabbed her hand, stopping her from going further. "What's wrong?" she asked.
He shook his head. "Nothing" he smiled. She raised an eyebrow, watching his eyes glisten underneath the moon.
"You trust me, yeah?" he asked and she nodded, her fingers grazing against his. He leaned in slowly, cupping her face. He gently kissed her soft lips. She kissed him back, holding the side of his jacket.
He pulled away and Delilah looked down, not allowing him to see her red face.
Reggie tilted her chin up. "What was that for?" she asked. He smiled. "Just because"
"Just because?" she repeated, laughing. He nodded. "Just because" he whispered.
"My mum likes you" Delilah said, fixing his hair. "Really?" he asked, smiling. She nodded.

Delilah ran down the stairs, looking at her father who sat alone in the kitchen. "Happy Birthday" he said dimly, standing up and wrapping an arm around her.
She hesitantly hugged him back, not being used to it.
Francis soon walked in, placing a cup of tea in front of Delilah and wrapping an arm around her from behind. "My little girl is all grown up" she teased.
"Where is everyone?" she asked. "They'll be here soon" Francis said, grabbing a box from the living room.
"Happy birthday, my girl" she smiled.
Delilah grinned widely, opening the box. Her lips parted as she looked down at the necklace. She turned it over and saw the name 'Lilah' carved into it. Delilah looked at her. "I remember somebody got if for us when you were first born, it was your fathers idea to give it to you"
"Thank you" she nodded,
Delilah pursed her lips into a line before embracing Tommy once more. Neither of them got a chance to say anything because John and Arthur had bounced in.
"Happy Birthday" they shouted. She smiled, pulling away from Tommy.
"Off me an Esme" John handed her a stack of money. "Buy yourself something nice"
"And off me, a bottle of whiskey" Arthur presented, handing her the bottle. "Arthur" Tommy scolded.
"Dad, i'll share it with Reggie, Ron and Luke, please" she pleaded. He bit his tongue at the mention of the three boys. He knew she was friends with them, but didn't approve. Francis smiled at the efforts the girl was making toward her father.
"Fine" he huffed.
Time had passed and they all continued working in the betting den, writing things down.
"Hello, love" Polly said, making her jump. "I left you something upstairs," she said, walking past her and into Arthur's office.
Delilah curiously climbed the stairs and pushed the door open, looking at the dress that hung beside her bed. It was similar to her blue dress, except it was a white satin one with diamonds outlining the top of it.
"Woah" she whispered, running her hands over the fabric.
-
"Before we go out to celebrate" Tommy entered her bedroom. "I wanted to talk to you" he said.
"What about" she asked. "Your safety" He said, standing in front of her.
She frowned, confused.
Tommy pulled a gun from his trousers and placed it on her bed. Her eyes examined it. "Pick it up" he said. Delilah stared at him. "Delilah, pick it up"
She hesitated before picking it up, the cold metal sending shivers up her spine. She swallowed hard.
"That's yours" he said. "I'll teach you how to shoot another day, but you need to keep that somewhere," he said. She kept ahold of it, running her finger over the metal.
"Do you understand?" Tommy placed a hand on her shoulder. She nodded. "Good, we're going to the Garrison in ten minutes"
He left the room, leaving her alone with the gun. Delilah shoved it under her bed, not knowing where else to put it.
-
Delilah smiled at herself in the mirror as she wore the white dress Polly had gotten her, her hair done nicely.
She walked down the stairs, lifting her dress away from the floor.
Polly looked at her and gasped. "You look beautiful" she complimented. Delilah felt herself get embarrassed from the fuss. "Pol, leave her alone" John said, throwing his arm round Lilah's shoulder and dragging her outside.
"Not so little anymore are you?" he asked.
She shrugged him away and looked around as they walked into the Garrison. Her eyes widened. "Reg?" she asked, approaching the boy.
"Hello, Lilah" he smiled. "What are you doing here?"
"Well, it's a peaky blinders party, i'm a peaky blinder" he whispered. Her face dropped slightly, remembering. "Oh yeah"
"Happy Birthday" he said. "I would give you a hug, or even a kiss, but John is currently sat glaring at me" he said quietly.
She smiled, holding in a laugh. "At least it's not my dad" she told him. He shrugged, agreeing.
"Hello, Reggie" Francis greeted softly. "Mrs Shelby" he said. "You can call me Francis" she smiled, placing a hand on his shoulder.
-
Tommy watched with a smile as Francis spun the fifteen year old girl round whilst the music played in the background. She didn't care that people were watching or that the pub was full of people. "Come on, Ada, join in," Francis urged, holding her hand out. Ada rolled her eyes jokingly and began dancing with them. Francis locked eyes with Tommy, smiling at him softly. The door of the pub swung open but they ignored it. "Reg!" Lilah shouted. Francis offered her hand to the boy, pulling him when she shook his head with a smile.
"Your a good boy, Reggie" Francis drunkenly said to him. "You treat my girl well"
Francis clapped her hands as Reggie spun Delilah around, a wide grin on their faces. Ada danced around with Francis.
"Tommy" Arthur whispered.
Francis' father was involved in the same industry as the Shelby's were, excepts he dealt with more dangerous people. And recently, Tommy had gone and gotten himself into some trouble with a business partner of Francis' father.
Francis and her father lost contact after she married Tommy, her father didn't like him.
Tommy looked toward the door, his face dropping. The same with John. "Francis" Tommy shouted. The girl looked at him. "Francis get away from the door" he said in a panic, she couldn't hear him over the music. John ran to the girls, grabbing Delilah who held Reggie's hand and pulled them to the side as the man who had entered the pub had pulled out a gun. "Francis" Polly warned. Everything began moving in slow motion for everyone.
Ada turned around, freezing as the barrel of the gun pointed toward her brother, but dangerously close to Francis.
"Mum" Delilah shouted once she'd realised what was going on. She attempted to run forward but got held back by John and Reggie.
Tommy ran toward the red headed girl in attempts to pull her away and just as he did, the gun fired, sending a bullet right into Francis' chest. Her breath hitched as she grabbed Tommy's arm, her mouth parting.
A scream left Delilah's mouth. "Mum" she shouted, John let her go and she ran forward. "Lilah" she whispered as the girl fell to her side. Tears were streaming down Delilah's face as she pressed her hand onto her mothers chest, blood covering her hand.
They hadn't even noticed the man leaving the building. Polly and Arthur rushed to Tommy's side, holding Francis as she fell to the floor in Tommy's arms. Tommy cupped her face, his eyes glossing over.
Reggie grabbed Delilah, trying to pull her backwards. She took a fistful of his clothes, screams and cries leaving her mouth.
John and Ada stood in shock.
People rushed around the pub, some leaving and some surrounding them. "Get me an ambulance" Tommy said quietly. "Get me a fucking ambulance" he shouted. "Tommy" Francis whispered, gripping the hand that held her face. "Yeah..yeah i'm here" he smiled slightly, holding her close. "You're going to be okay love" Polly whispered, pushing Francis' hair out of her face. "Delilah," Francis whispered, "look after her, please.." she begged.
Delilah fought against Reggie's, grip, scrambling toward her mother who lay in a pool of her own blood.
Tommys heart broke watching as she grew pale. Tears fell from his eyes. "No, Franny come on, you're okay, the ambulance is on its way. Hold on please" he begged, "Hold on for us" he cried, kissing her head.
"Mum, please" Delilah begged, struggling to breath. She grew light headed.
Arthur stood, stepping away, covering his mouth. "Get out" he shouted at everyone. "Get out the fucking pub"
"Reggie take her home" John said. Reggie grabbed her again, no matter how hard she fought against him, he held her tightly. Her legs grew weak as she collapsed into him, crying. He held her head, holding her.
And whilst everyone thought it was the war that changed Tommy Shelby, it wasn't, it was the death of his first love, Francis Shay. Tommy would be kept awake by the thoughts of her death, for years. He'd watch as his daughter grew to be just like her, have the same look on her face when she was angry. He watched as he slowly realised, he hadn't fully lost Francis at all, because she was still there, inside of Delilah.
