—— SOMETIMES I REALLY wanted to put my foot down Isaacs throat and shut him the fuck up. For instance, when we were seven and he won three games of uno in a row and wouldn't shut up about it for a week, and when we were thirteen and he learnt how to do a backflip before I could, and right now.
"I'm thinking of throwing a party, not too big, just us lot and then some rugby friends." Isaac boasted at the lunch table.
"I can't believe your mom is letting you have a party for your sixteenth." Becky scoffed, "Weren't you grounded literally last week?"
"Yeah, but she feels bad for cheating on my dad with his brother and is trying to win me over by proving she's a better parent." Isaac shrugged like it was nothing.
Everyone went quiet for a while, blinking in silence, before Alexis spoke up.
"Anyway. . . what's going on between you and Leah?"
"Oh." Isaac flushed a deep scarlet. "Nothing. We're just talking."
"Talking as in friends or situationship?" Roman asked, stealing one of Maddy's fries.
Isaac didn't reply, opting to sip from his water bottle instead. Roman laughed and patted him on the back,
hollering.
"I know that's right! Isaacs getting bitches!"
Maddy swatted him on the back of the head, glaring at him.
Roman cleared his throat, "Apologies. It has come to my attention that Isaac Simmons has acquired the skill of flirting and obtaining the attention of a female." And wrapped an arm around Maddy's shoulders as my
smiled in satisfaction.
"So. . . are you going to invite her to your party?" Oscar asked.
"I dunno." Isaac shrugged, "I mean— I don't know if she'd show up because, like, it's a couple thousand miles away and all that, but don't worry, that's a minor problem."
Oscar kicked him under the table, revenge for his sarcastic
response.
"Ow! You wanker." Isaac hissed, rubbing his shin. "But, seriously, if I invited her, I feel like I would have to invite everyone else too."
"What's wrong with that?" Roman deadpanned, making everyone groan. "Oh, right! He who shall not be named!"
"Jesus Christ, you don't have to walk on eggshells around me! I'm not going to burst into tears just because you say his name." I laugh humourlessly, sick of my friends acting like I was a ticking time bomb.
"Sorry hun, we just don't want to upset you." Becky placed a hand on top of mine.
"Yeah, that's all." Oscar kissed the back of my head. "We don't do it to piss you off, Lex."
"How many times have I told you to stop calling me that?" I huffed, sitting up properly so I was leaning on him.
"I— Sorry?" Oscar frowned, letting his arm fall away from my waist.
It went awkwardly quiet for a hot minute, before Roman addressed the elephant in the room.
"Awkward!" He sang under his breath.
"Just because you have to right to talk doesn't always mean you should." Becky snapped.
"Can we go back to talking about my party?" Isaac sighed. "Alexis, is it okay if they're there?"
"It's not my party." I said. "You invite whoever you want."
"That basically means, 'No, I don't want them there, but I'm not about to say it to your face'." Roman put on a feminine voice.
"Can you be serious for one fucking second?" Becky scoffed, gritting her teeth.
"God damn! What crawled up everyone's ass today?!" Roman exclaimed, holding his hands up in surrender.
By this point, I'd had enough. I stood up from the table, grabbing my bag and slinging it over my right shoulder.
"Alexis!" Maddy called after me, along with an annoyed huff of, "Good job, Ro!"
I went to the one place I knew would be free and open, Miss Smiths office. I knocked on the door and stood patiently outside, waiting for her to open it.
She smiled upon seeing me, pressing her land yard to the buzzer to unlock the door. I opened it and went in.
"Alexis Lewis, I haven't seen you in a while." Miss Smith smiled, sitting behind her desk as I sat in the back corner of the room. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"
"I just needed some time alone. My friends are annoying me and I just feel like they're constantly on edge around me, afraid to say the wrong thing and set me off— which, I haven't done in a long time, so I don't know what they're so worried about." I ranted, picking at my nails.
"Alright, well you stay in here for the rest of lunch then we'll send you back for last period." Miss Smith nodded,
opening her lunch box. "How's things otherwise?"
"I. . . I don't know." I frown. "I— I think I sound like a complete cunt for saying this but. . . I don't think I like Oscar as much as I thought I did. And I think I miss Walker more than I should."
"That's completely normal, Lexi, you two were very close, but you're also very young, it's important to know that your relationships in secondary most likely won't last. And it sounds like the end of the world, but it's really not. You have your whole life ahead of you." Miss Smith did what she was best at: advising.
"But, I'm scared. I'm scared that my feelings towards Walker are more than just liking him." I swallow thickly. "And I just feel so guilt because I'm with Oscar and I know he likes me so much but I just. . . I don't feel the same."
"You're in no wrong for feeling any way that you do. You can't change the way you feel for someone, no matter how hard you try." Miss Smith sighed, "So don't beat yourself up over it. If I were you, I'd break up with Oscar, because it's not fair on either of you to be in a relationship where feelings aren't mutual."
"But I feel bad." I play with the ends of my hair. "He's done a lot for me and. . . I think he loves me."
"Why do you think that?"
"He tried to say it to me last week."
"Oh."
"Yeah. . ."
"What do you mean he 'tried' to say it?" Miss Smith furrowed her eyebrows in confusion.
"We were chilling in his room and he said 'I lo' and then his sister burst into the room, begging me to do her hair." I rested my head back on the wall.
"Definitely break up with him." Miss Smith nodded. "And that's not to be malicious or cruel, but because you shouldn't be dating him if he loves you and you barely like him anymore."
"I know." I mumbled and nodded, pulling out my phone.
I ended up in my contacts app, scrolling through until I reached the bottom, my thumb hovering over one contact.
