Stiles isn't exactly sure how he is going to help Rory Carter—he almost regrets agreeing to help her at all because he's stumped on ideas on how to be useful to her. There isn't exactly books available on the market (he's checked) for him to read, nor is there any websites that aren't completely bogus on how to help an almost-dead person to cross back into the land of the living. Most things he finds that aren't complete horseshit and scams, is stuff that tells him how to get a ghost to go to to the light to find peace—which is what he doesn't want. It's far from what he wants. He's come to the realisation that within the first few weeks of this year, he's become Beacon Hill's resident supernatural advisor, and, in order to save Rory, he's now on a serious time crunch to become better at his new role.
Rory was already worried about her life to start with once she literally found herself looking down at her own dead body, but now that there's the risk that she'll never get to wake up if her parents decide to pull the plug before she gets the chance to return, she was going insane with concern. She was constantly at the hospital, listening in to the doctors and nurses' conversations to see if there was any idea they could try to wake her up, even if they were slightly unconventional. She's desperate at this point and doesn't care.
Rory doesn't want to die at the age of seventeen. She's barely lived a life to be able to comfortably pass on—for God's sake, she hasn't even had a boyfriend before. Looking back on her life before the almost death, makes her feel pathetic and regretful that she didn't even try to take risks, or live a life. She stayed within her comfort zone and didn't go out to parties, make friends, sneak out when she wasn't supposed to or even do anything outside the norm for her. Now... she wished she did.
She was at least grateful she didn't have to go through this alone; that at least she had Stiles. She felt sorry for him regularly, because he was the one that had to deal with her sudden meltdowns about the looming of her death; and while she was hopeful they would be able to figure it out, she had to grow to accept that maybe she would have to say goodbye sooner rather than later.
Rory would've liked to have her goodbye in person; to be able to hug her loved ones and tell them it'll be alright—but she knows she won't get that with her current predicament. Her parents aren't handling it well either. They're fighting amongst each other, distancing from one another rather than holding the other closer for support. She can see them blaming each other, as if it was the other's fault for her situation when deep down they're blaming themselves even more. She wants to tell them not to fight, and to tell them she's there and she'll be home soon... but she doesn't even know if that's true or not.
Until she can be sure that she will eventually return home, she has to rely on Stiles Stilinski to help her get to the bottom of her situation—but she knows she can't rely on him entirely even though she wants to, because he has his own life to live too, and he already has his hands full with Scott. She doesn't want to break him before they even get started in a friendship, and she's left at square one again.
It was the first game of the season, and Stiles was so incredibly nervous about it. One: because it was the first game of the season, and it always sets the tone for how the rest of their season is going to look, depending on if they win or lose; and two: because he's terrified that Scott is going to shift and kill someone in the middle of the field once he loses control. Scott isn't as concerned about that, he's more concerned about living a semi-normal life where he plays lacrosse and has the girl he likes as his girlfriend.
Scott hasn't really come around to accepting what his new norm was yet, and he wasn't exactly aware of the gravity of his situation—that he could actually kill someone if he wanted to, and he could even if he didn't want to because he hadn't learnt how to control his abilities yet—or maybe he just doesn't want to. Rory doesn't know Scott well enough to assume what his thoughts are yet, but from what she could tell just by watching him recently, it sure seemed that way.
Rory sat amongst the full bleachers, filled with spectators from both teams' sides of friends and family. She sat closest to the bench where Stiles would be sitting to talk to him throughout the game while both teams milled around as the referee got in position on the field.
Rory gave an enthusiastic wave to Stiles as soon as she saw him and Scott walk up to the field, dressed in their sporting gear and joined the team on the sidelines. Stiles gave her a subtle smile in return even though he was slightly embarrassed that she was going to be watching him sit on a bench for an hour instead of actually play.
Lydia approached Scott and called his name. As soon as she got close enough, she grabs him aggressively by the front of his jersey to pull him closer to her.
Stiles watches with a very clearly jealous expression on his face as he backs away from them and Rory bit her lip and she watches him watch them with a somber expression.
"Hey, kid." Stilinski says to his son as he walks up to him, pulling him out of his jealous gaze as he turns his head back to look at his father.
He tries to hide the anxiety he's feeling about Scott playing in the game and his overthinking from watching his interaction with Lydia and says, "Hey."
"So, you think you'll see any action tonight?" His dad asks him and Stiles looks at Rory, who gives him an encouraging thumbs up that she thinks he'll play. She's never watched a lacrosse game before, so she had no idea that Stiles Stilinski was a notorious benchwarmer ever since he joined the team freshman year.
Stiles then shrugged as he responds, "Action? Maybe."
Stilinski clearly doesn't comprehend the double meaning behind Stiles' words, that there could very well be a lot of action if Scott loses control and attacks someone on the field in front of everyone rather than Stiles getting field time. He isn't sure what's worse anymore— disappointing his dad or disappointing Scott.
The referee then blew his whistle, calling all the players to the field where they met in the middle, while Coach Finstock called out assuring words to his team— they were assuring to him at least.
The referee set the ball down on the grass between Jackson and one of the players on the other team before ordering them into position, "Down!" He called and Jackson and the other player crouch down with their lacrosse sticks net-down, each of them preparing to be the first one to scoop up the ball and make a play.
Several feet behind Jackson, Scott closes his eyes and once again prays under his breath. The referee gives the final warning before the game begins, "Set!" He calls again, and a moment later, the ref blows his whistle, and the players set off into the first play of the game, with Jackson easily scooping up the ball and making his way down the field, with Scott and the rest of the starting teammates following him to back him up.
Scott runs quickly down the field and holds up his stick to indicate to Jackson that he's open for a pass, but instead, he passes to another player.
Meanwhile, on the bench, Stiles continues to anxiously gnaw on his lacrosse glove as he watches the game progress, groaning when Scott is clearly purposely ignored by his teammates while Rory sat next to him on the bench.
Scott is once again ignored by another player, who tries to pass the ball to someone else who was better guarded than Scott— who was wide open; the player misses the catch, and a member of the opposing team catches it instead and runs the opposite direction down the field, "Is that meant to happen?" Rory asks Stiles in confusion, wondering if it had something to do with Scott's positioning as the reason why he wasn't getting the ball.
Stiles shakes his head while watching Scott holding his arms out in frustration.
Beacon Hills manages to get the ball again, with a different teammate catching the ball and passing it back to Jackson. However, Jackson gets side-tackled hard, causing the ball to fall out of the net on his lacrosse stick.
Scott's eyes widen in surprise when he sees the ball has fallen onto the grass nearby, and he realises he has a chance to grab it and actually participate in the game. However, Jackson sees the ball and then sees Scott looking at it, anticipating his next move and rushing towards the ball himself just as Scott lunges to do the same, not wanting Scott to get any glory.
Just as Scott is about to reach the ball, Jackson catches up with him and shoves him aside hard so that he's able to regain possession of the ball once again. Scott hits the ground with enough force that he rolls several times across the field, and Melissa McCall gasps and covers her mouth with her hands in shock from watching her son her hurt.
Scott looks on furiously as he watches Jackson launch the ball into the net, scoring the first goal of the game for their team while the crowd in the bleachers starts to stand and cheer for him— minus Stiles and Rory, who were apprehensively afraid that the unfair treatment towards Scott was going to inadvertently cause him to shift on the field.
Coach, however, is thrilled by the fact that they scored the first goal of the game and screams from the sidelines, "That's it, Jackson! Get fired up! Fired up!"
Scott tries to catch up with the others and, finding the effort futile, stops and sighs deeply.
Jackson just high-fived one of his fellow teammates when he catches Scott's eye from down field and smirks, leaving Scott looking crestfallen. Stiles sighs deeply and dramatically at the exchange and mutters under his breath, "No..."
Lydia Martin's excited cheering catches Rory's attention and she turns her head to the bleachers, where Allison was beside her, smiling and trying to keep up with the game as well.
Lydia turns to Allison and grabs her by the wrist as she tries to hype up her friend. She picks up a sign she made and has Allison help her hold it up. The sign reads, "WE LUV U JACKSON" in black and red letters while they simultaneously cheered for Jackson.
Rory winced, "Oh, no..." She groans, catching Stiles' attention too.
"Brutal..." Stiles grimaced as he could see how jealous Scott was getting from the field, watching the girl he liked cheer for the guy he hates most. Everyone could see the betrayal and hurt in his eyes, and Stiles immediately gets a bad feeling, especially when he sees Scott grit his teeth and run back onto the field, "Oh, this is not gonna be good..."
Rory bites her lip, wanting to close her eyes, "No, it's not."
In the middle of the field, Jackson, Danny, and several other players are huddled together to whisper to each other, while Scott was slowly losing control of himself. He was in a crouched position with his head down, a low growling noise coming out of his mouth, where his fangs seem to be extended.
The referee frowns in concern and confusion as he looks over to Scott, "You okay, kid?"
Scott, unable to talk out of fear of further transforming, simply nods his head.
Jackson catches their brief conversation and watches Scott curiously for a long moment, especially when the referee—who has since walked to the center of the field— turns back to give Scott one last confused look. A player from the other team, looked at Scott warily from behind him, clearly disturbed by the low growling sound that continues to come from Scott's throat to the point where he backs up several paces to put some space between them.
"I think the bad thing we're trying to avoid is happening." Rory mumbled and Stiles continues to anxiously twist his fingers as he watches Scott with intensity from the sidelines.
Stiles wrings his hands even more before anxiously rubbing his neck, becoming more unsure of his plan to allow Scott to play by the moment and wondering if maybe Derek might have been right to keep Scott off the field.
Lydia, once again, grabs the sign she made cheering on Jackson, which they had taken a break from holding up, and goes to return to raising it in the air, standing to her feet; unlike everyone else in the stands who are seated. She turns to her dark haired friend, "Allison—a little help here?"
Allison looks at Lydia with an expression that almost looks irritated before she reluctantly stands to her feet and holds up her half of the sign with her left hand while Lydia does the same with her right. Though it's obvious Allison's heart isn't in it when it comes to cheering Jackson on.
Scott looks over once again at Allison, and even though it's obvious to everyone else that Allison is only holding the sign to be nice, Scott's eyes flash gold again for a brief second before he clenches his jaw and returns his attention to the game.
The referee once again calls the play and the players all get into position, and when the ref blows the whistle, the two players at the front come to a stalemate, with neither one able to push past the other to grab the ball.
The force of having two lacrosse sticks with pressure from opposing sides causes the ball to fly haphazardly into the air, and Scott, finally seeing an opportunity to be active in the game, leaps high into the air, breezing right over the heads of two players before landing lightly on his feet and running as fast as possible towards the goal. He deftly dodges the three players from the opposing team who try to tackle him, keeping hold of the ball the entire time.
Scott continues to duck, weave, and spin around the other players at a speed that is very quick for a human but not obviously supernatural—but anyone who knew how uncoordinated Scott used to be, would know he would need supernatural interference to become that good.
Scott easily throws the ball into the goal and the crowd goes wild, jumping up and down excitedly and cheering for the team. Stiles leaps to his feet and begins wildly pumping his arms as he shouts loudly, causing Rory to cover her mouth to muffle the laugh that was escaping when he dramatically turns to face his fellow teammates on either side to solicit high-fives, which he does not get, but he remains ecstatic as he cheers on his best friend's performance.
Several other players playfully chest-bump Scott in congratulations for his goal, and as they get into position, Coach, eager to let Scott continue to play at this level and win them the game, starts shouting at the other players to pass to him.
Rory watches as Jackson clenched his jaw tightly, making it obvious that he's unhappy with the attention being on Scott rather than himself, like he's used to. The referee steps up to the two players in the standoff for possession of the ball, blowing the whistle, and the two players stalemate once again for a moment before the opposing team snatches it, with the player running toward the opposing team's goal.
Unfortunately for this player, he gets right into Scott's line of sight and is horrified when he sees Scott, whose eyes are blazing gold and whose fangs are out as he growls menacingly under his breath. Scared, the player weakly tosses the ball, which Scott catches easily, causing the team to cheer as he runs toward the Beacon Hills team's goal.
"That's not meant to happen, is it?" Rory questions with confusion again.
Stiles only continued to to gnaw on the finger of one of his gloves when a dumbfounded Coach, sits down next to Stiles with a confused expression to talk to him, though neither of them take their eyes off of the game, "Did... did the opposing team just deliberately pass us the ball?" He asked incredulously.
"Okay, so that answers my question." Rory deducts with a nod.
Stiles removes the fingertip of his glove from his mouth and nods eagerly, "Yes, I believe so, Coach." He answers as Scott rushes down the field, ducking to avoid the blows from the opposing players and deftly zig-zagging out of their way.
Coach smiles wryly, though Stiles is still extremely anxious about how Scott seems to be walking a very fine line in terms of controlling his lycanthropy, "Interesting..."
There was just over thirty seconds to spare in the final quarter of the game, and tensions were at an all-time high. Scott had just taken a shot, throwing the ball so hard that it busted through the net of the opposing player's lacrosse stick net and into the goal. In the stands, everyone was standing and cheering, while ignoring how physically impossible that should be for him to do.
Suddenly, Scott looks panicked as he stands in the middle of the field, barely concealing the fact that his eyes are blazing gold and his fangs are still extended, seemingly struggling to reign in his newfound werewolf side. Meanwhile, Coach continues to clap and cheer, oblivious to Scott's current condition while the coach from the opposing team comes over and lightly smacks Coach Finstock's shoulder with the back of his hand to get his attention, making it clear that he doesn't think this last goal should count.
Coach Finstock, exasperated, scoffs and argues against him, "What? The ball's in the net!" He throws his hands up, "That's the goal of the game— to get the goal in the net!"
The other coach couldn't argue further with him, because they all knew if the roles were reversed, they'd expect the same sentiment. Coach then blew his whistle to indicate that they have agreed that the goal was fair.
Scott, still panicking, gets into position on the middle of the field as the referee once again sets up the standoff between Jackson and a player from the opposing team to determine who gets possession of the ball.
Jackson and the opposing player crouch down to stand off for possession of the ball, which ends with the latter winning and running down the field. However, he accidentally drops the ball, which Scott scoops up before running the other way.
He seems confident at first, but then, he freezes in place, as if he's unsure of what to do next.
"What's he doing?" Rory questions with bewilderment. He looks like a deer in headlights; like he's never played before. She then realises when she catches a glimpse of golden eyes underneath his helmet, "Oh, no. He's shifting."
Stiles stands up to get a better look as he realises what is going on and starts to mutter under his breath, "No, no... Scott, no, no!"
There was seventeen more seconds left in the game, and the opposing players were surrounding Scott in an attempt to regain possession of the ball.
Scott then snaps out of his daze, and begins sprinting towards the goal as if he didn't just freeze up seconds before hand. The goalie for the opposing team seems terrified by the sight of Scott staring at him with his intense gold eyes, and just as two other players from the other team start rushing toward Scott from each side, Scott twists at the waist and puts all of his strength into tossing the ball toward the goal, which flies with such force that the goalie dodges it rather than trying to catch it.
The referee blows his whistle just as the buzzer sounds that the game has timed-out, leading all of the supporters of the Beacon Hills Cyclones to leap to their feet and cheer ecstatically, thrilled to see the final score, with Beacon Hills winning the game.
Stiles jumps up with his arms raised in the air while Rory couldn't believe that Scott had managed to pull himself together at the last second without killing someone. Control like that usually takes years for a newly bitten werewolf—and he somehow managed to do it within a few weeks.
Stiles lowers his arms and sighs in relief that the game managed to end in a win without Scott hurting or killing anyone due to changing, "Oh, my God! He did it!"
Scott was still standing in the middle of the field, seemingly dumbstruck by the fact that he just won his first game, having scored half of the total amount of points made by the team.
However, he's finally brought back to reality when he suddenly drops his stick on the ground and removes his right glove to find that, despite his eyes and teeth returning to normal, his fingernails are extending into claws, indicating that he's losing control again.
Not wanting to expose his secret to the crowd, he runs toward the school just as the audience members start running onto the field to congratulate and console the players on the Beacon Hills and opposing teams.
Allison rushes after Scott to see what is going on, a worried and curious expression forming on her face that he had run off instead of stayed with his team and their supporters to celebrate their win.
Stiles' own celebration was cut short when he sees his dad's concerned expression while he was on the phone with someone, "Dad, what's wrong?" He calls out to him.
Stilinski only holds up his index finger of his free hand to indicate that Stiles needs to hold on so he can listen to whomever is on the other end of the line. Stiles and Rory share a look and she knows he wants her to get close so she can hear the conversation.
She approaches the sheriff and listens in on the conversation, and after only being there for a few seconds, Stiles can see paleness washing over Rory's usual tanned skin. Whatever was being said on the phone wasn't good.
After Rory tells him what happened, and Stilinski informs him of the more finer details that they had missed previously, Stiles runs to the locker rooms to find Scott immediately to tell him of the newest revelation.
His arms and legs were flailing about wildly, not realising what he was interrupting until he gets into the shower room. He immediately gets a guilty look on his face when he realised he just crashed Scott Allison's romantic and private moment, and quickly ducks out of the shower room to give them some privacy; the two of them being so into the moment that they hadn't even noticed Stiles' short presence.
When they finally break apart again, they keep their foreheads pressed together as Allison giggles happily. She shifts so their noses are now pressed together as well before looking Scott in the eyes with a giddy sort of nervousness, "I, um..." she mumbles, biting her lip before forcing herself to take a step back away from Scott, who was smiling widely, "I gotta get back to my dad."
She gives Scott one last peck on the lips before turning to leave, causing Stiles to frantically try to act like he wasn't just watching them make out and failing miserably. Allison takes it in stride, though, and politely greets him before she walks past him to return to the field to leave with her dad, "Hi, Stiles."
Stiles awkwardly returns the sentiment as she passes him, "Hey. Yeah." He replies, waving at her casually.
"It's moments like these that I'm glad I'm invisible." Rory cringed because of how deep Allison was blushing and how uncomfortable Stiles was because they both knew what just happened.
Once Allison was gone, Stiles rolls his eyes and glares at Rory for her comment before going back towards Scott when Allison was out of earshot. Scott was still dazed in the afterglow of his romantic interlude with Allison, but he walks over to him with the cheesiest grin on his face, "I kissed her."
Stiles nods patronisingly, finding Scott's dopey demeanor tedious, "I saw."
"She kissed me." He's unbothered by Stiles' lack of excitement for him, because he just killed Allison.
Stiles makes a face, "Yep. Saw that, too." He confirms with an awkward nod, "That's pretty good, huh?" He tries to humour him.
"I—I don't know how, but... I controlled it. I pulled it back." Scott already has a much more positive outlook on his future now, and Stiles and Rory couldn't tell if it was because of Allison or because of something more genuine, "Maybe I can do this? Maybe it's not that bad?"
Stiles only chuckled nervously. He doesn't want to spoil his mood after he saw how truly happy and at peace he currently was—especially after how panicked he's been the last few weeks since he got bitten, "Yeah... we'll talk later, then."
Stiles pats Scott on the shoulder affectionately and turns to leave, but Scott—thankfully—was still able to read Stiles perfectly in spite of his many current distractions. The werewolf grabs him by the shoulder and forces him to turn around to tell him what's going on, his smile dimming, "What?"
Stiles sighs when he sees Rory fidget with her fingers. She didn't like the news at all because it had essentially returned them back to square one. He doesn't want to spoil Scott's positive attitude, and he doesn't want to remind Rory of how shitty their situation was, but he also knew that the information was important and needed to be shared.
"The, uh, medical examiner looked at the other half of the body we found..."
Scott raises his eyebrows, not sure where Stiles is going with this, "And?"
"Well, I'll keep it simple. Medical examiner determines killer of girl to be animal, not human. Derek's human, not animal. Derek... not killer. Derek... let out of jail."
Scott gapes at Stiles in shock, appalled by this news, "Are you kidding?"
Stiles grimaces, making it clear that he's just as unsettled by this news as Scott is, "No, and here's a bigger kick in the ass—my dad ID'd the dead girl. Both halves. Her name was Laura Hale."
Scott's jaw drops even more when he puts the pieces together, "Hale?"
Stiles huffs an anxious laugh before grimacing again, "Derek's sister."
