Stiles doesn't know what to make of his life. His best friend is a werewolf, and he talks to a ghost—or, partially a ghost since Rory isn't technically dead. He's very glad that Rory is more of a Casper the Friendly Ghost rather than something out of Poltergeist, because he isn't too sure how to react to being haunted. He's seen how those movies turn out, and he knows the funny friend always gets killed by the monster after the hot popular girl. Stiles knows he's the funny sidekick in the situation; and he knows he doesn't want to die so soon.
Seeing Rory still freaks him out, especially when she just appears out of no where. In all honesty, Stiles thinks that she gets a kick out of seeing him scared.
But, it does have its perks when it comes to snooping. She can get into places unseen and get information without anyone knowing. It couldn't of come at a better time either as Stiles was determined to solve the mystery of her attempted murder and the other murder of the unknown woman.
Stiles was hidden behind the corner of a short stairway where he watched his father, Sheriff Stilinski, standing and speaking to the principal with one of his deputies while Rory stood next to them, listening.
After a few minutes, Rory appeared next to Stiles, making him flinch while she actioned for him to pretend he was on the phone so they could talk without making Stiles look insane for talking to himself in public, "What were they saying?"
"They're enforcing a curfew for minors because of the dead person and almost dead-me in the woods." Rory tells him, her mouth frowning in concern about what the town is doing to try and protect its citizens. She also felt a little guilty because if it wasn't for her, or the other girl, the teenagers of Beacon Hills wouldn't have the curfew and they'd be able to have fun on weekends and after school.
Stiles scoffs in exasperation and threw his arm up in the air, "Unbelievable. My dad's out looking for a rabid animal, while the jerk-off who actually tried to kill you is just hangin' out; doing whatever he wants."
Rory sent him a deadpanned look, "You don't seriously think that Derek Hale was the one that killed me, do you?" She asked him and Stiles nodded his head purposefully, "Stiles, the Hales were friends with my family before they died in that fire. My mom babysat him and his siblings when their parents were away, or picked them up late after practices. I doubt he would kill me and some other poor girl."
Stiles looked deep in thought before he got an idea, "I can do something."
"Uh, I don't think I like where this is going." Rory stared at him with a skeptical expression, "What are you thinking?"
"I think we need to find the other half of the body." Stiles answered her and her eyes widened instantaneously at the idea.
Stiles walked off without another word. When the gravity of what Stiles has just said hits Rory, she scoffs incredulously, "Please, tell me you're kidding!" She says as she runs after him, going through people as she tries to catch up to him, "How is that going to help with anything? Also, how do you plan on not getting yourself killed with the killer probably still out there?"
"All very good questions..." Stiles responds, "And we're probably going to need Scott and his super senses to help us out."
"Us?" Rory stopped walking and looked at him in confusion, but Stiles just kept on walking.
Rory wasn't sure how Stiles managed to rope Scott into helping—more importantly, she wasn't sure why Scott would want to help. From the sounds of things, there really was a possibility that Derek Hale was the one that tried to kill her. When Scott was at his property earlier, he had apparently smell blood that was buried under soil. Somehow, it triggered something in Scott to help investigate the seemingly suspicious older male.
They started at the hospital. They were unsure of where to go to get the information they need until Stiles saw a sign on the wall pointing them in the direction of the morgue.
Scott took one last look around so no one could see two teenagers—and a ghost—hanging around an authorised area before slowly backing into the door towards the morgue, leaving Stiles behind as a look-out.
"Good luck, I guess..." Rory muttered to herself as she followed Stiles back toward the lobby so it didn't look too obvious, where he sees Lydia waiting in one of the seats.
Rory noticed immediately how he got both nervous and excited to be in close proximity with his crush. It was too obvious when he had to turn around and lean against the nearby reception desk to pull himself together, "Oh, my God..." He groaned.
"What?" Rory whispered, even though the only the only person that could hear her was Stiles, and he tried to secretly look back at Lydia once again as a hint that he was groaning about her, "Lydia is just a girl, Stiles. Go talk to her. Girls love confidence." She encouraged.
Stiles looked nervous and after a long moment, he can't resist Rory's advise and heads toward her direction to talk to her, "Hey, Lydia..." He starts of, his voice shaking with nerves, "You probably don't remember me. Um, I sit behind you in biology."
Lydia made a confused face but doesn't say anything, so Stiles kept talking, "Uh, anyway, I always thought that we just had this kind of connection." He continued and Rory raised an eyebrow at his speech but doesn't say anything to dissuade him. Lydia then made at face as though what he was saying surprised her; which Rory didn't understand because she was sure someone like Lydia Martin knew everyone loved her, "Unspoken, of course. Maybe it'd be kind of cool to... get to know each other a little better..."
Rory's face dropped when she noticed the bluetooth headset in Lydia's ear; it becoming obvious that she had been on the phone the entire time and hasn't been listening, "Stiles..." Rory tried to get him to stop speaking, but he kept going as he hadn't noticed it yet, "Stiles!"
"Hold on. Give me a second." Lydia suddenly speaks and she hits the hold button on her headset and takes it out of her ear before turning to speak to Stiles directly, who's face dropped in realisation, "Yeah, I didn't get any of what you just said. Is it worth repeating?"
Stiles looked back at Rory, who's expression was of pity. She mouthed an apology to him and Stiles just chuckled nervously and going to sit down elsewhere, "No. Sorry, I'll just sit..." He says to himself, feeling the awkwardness and embarrassment choking him as he sat around the corner from her, "You don't care..." He muttered.
Rory sat beside him in an empty chair while he picked up a pamphlet to distract himself from an embarrassing moment he'll replay in his mind forever, "I'm sorry, Stiles."
Stiles only shrugged lazily, "It's okay. It's not the first time she's done this." He whispers to her and her eyes softened with sadness. From what she could tell about Stiles already, he was a nice person. He deserved someone nice, even though she wouldn't say that Lydia Martin was that person for him. Rory didn't think that Lydia deserved him. He was too good for her, especially while she was acting as if she was superficial.
Rory looked down at her lap momentarily before she turned back to Stiles to give him some words of encouragement, hoping to not let that moment crush his confidence with women forever when she noticed the pamphlet in his hands. A giggle escaped her lips, "Thinking of becoming a gynaecologist, are you?"
"What?" Stiles asked in confusion as he properly looked at the material he was reading—his eyes were looking at the pages but his mind was not registering it whatsoever; it was too busy repeating his embarrassing moment with Lydia over and over again, telling him what he should've said and done instead, "Oh, my God." He groaned in embarrassment again when he realised he was reading a pamphlet about the menstrual cycle.
Before they could say anything else, Scott appeared and rips the pamphlet out of his hands, scaring him so much he jumps in his seat, "Holy shit!" Stiles yelped.
Rory could see that Scott was disturbed by what he had seen; which was fair considering no one should ever have to be inside of a morgue to look at a dead body. Scott gulped as he said, "The scent was the same."
Stiles straightened up, "You're sure?"
"Yes." Scott confirmed with a nod, making Rory's eyes widen at the prospect of Derek being a killer. From what she could remember, Derek was always sweet to her and looked out for her when they were kids. She understood he hardened up after the death of his family, but she didn't think he would become a killer.
"So, he did bury the other half of the body on his property?" Stiles asked Scott, making sure that the scent he was referring to was the one he smelt while being by Derek's house.
Scott nodded again, "Which means we have proof he killed the girl, and probably tried to kill Rory."
Stiles looked at Rory's saddened figure, getting all the motivation he needed to go after Derek, "I say we use it." He suggests and started walking away.
Scott followed after him in confusion, "How?"
Stiles then stopped walking and sighed. He turned to face Scott to make sure of what they're about to do, "Tell me something first—are you doing this because you want to stop Derek and help Rory, or because you want to play in the game and he said you couldn't?"
Rory could see by the look on Scott's face that both of the offered options are true, but he says different, "There are bite marks on the legs, Stiles— bite marks."
Rory's face skewed up. She didn't think she had bite marks on her body from when she last saw herself unconscious in the hospital bed. Was it the same killer and it suddenly changed how they killed? Or was it the work of a completely different person?
Stiles nodded in agreement, "Okay. Then, we're gonna need a shovel." He says as he smacked Scott playfully on the shoulder before leading him out of the hospital.
An uneasy expression grew on Rory's face as she stared at the boys' retreating figures, "I don't like this."
Night had fallen, and Derek has just walked out of the Hale House ruins towards his Camaro. He opens the door to the car and gets in, starting the engine and driving away, not knowing that Scott and Stiles were watching him from a distance in Stiles' Jeep.
Once Derek was a fair distance away from the house, Stiles drove the Jeep closer to the property, parking it so that he and Scott can get out with their shovels in hand. Scott looks around for a moment until Stiles joins him at the front of the Jeep, leading Scott to hand him a flashlight before the two head off toward the side of the house where the recently-overturned patch of earth is located.
After a moment, Scott speaks up, sounding concerned, though he doesn't stop walking toward the house with Stiles, "Wait... something's different."
"Different, how?" Stiles responded with an uneasy tone.
"I don't know..." Scott answered. The two finally reach the suspected gravesite, and Scott aims his shovel towards it with a shrug, "Let's just get this over with."
Scott jams his shovel into the ground, stomping the spade-end with his foot to push it in further before scooping up some dirt and throwing it aside.
The two work in silence for several minutes as they dig up the grave until Scott, sounding anxious, wipes his brow with his sleeve before he finally speaks up again, "This is taking way too long."
Stiles rolls his eyes, but doesn't stop digging, "Just keep going."
Rory suddenly appeared and Stiles held back the urge to jump back and scream like he usually does whenever she does that, "You are way too calm for someone that's literally digging up a grave at a suspected murderers house." She says and Stiles secretly glared at her.
He seemed calm on the outside, but his heart was racing with nerves and fear that Derek would just come out of nowhere and kill them just like he did with the others.
"What if he comes back?" Scott exasperated.
Stiles shrugs nonchalantly and continues to dig, as does Scott, "Then we get the hell out of here."
"What if he catches us?" Scott asked.
"I have a plan for that." Stiles tells him and Rory's eyebrow raised, wondering what kind of plan Stiles came up with. She's sure it's not actually a good one either, but she's intrigued to know what it is.
"Which is?" Scott asked inquisitively.
Stiles stops digging, leading Scott to do the same so they can look each other in the face, "You run one way. I run the other. Whoever he catches first? Too bad." Stiles shrugs again as though it's no big deal and gets back to digging.
Rory let out a snort, "That is the worst plan I've ever heard." She said, "He'll probably catch you first, Stiles."
Scott sighs in exasperation before getting back to work as well, "I hate that plan."
Scott dumps another scoop of dirt to the side and is about to dig in again when Stiles' shovel hits something solid, causing Stiles to raise his left hand and hold it out in front of Scott to keep him from moving, "Oh, stop, stop, stop."
When they both look down, they see several twine rope strings poking out of the earth, and the two kneel down so they can brush the dirt away with their bare hands.
They eventually uncover what looks like a bundle of a rough fabric, like burlap, which has been tied closed with the twine rope.
Stiles starts to try to untie the bindings, and Scott, still on edge with fear that Derek is going to come back and catch them, impatiently urges Stiles on, "Hurry!"
Stiles, frustrated by Scott's anxiety, responds in an irritated tone of voice, "I'm trying. Did he have to tie the thing in, like, nine hundred knots?"
"I'll do it." Scott says and Stiles continues to untie one end of the bundle, while Scott bends down further to start untying the other.
After a long moment, the two manage to get it all unknotted, and they open the bundle to find what looks like a severed head of a black wolf.
This scares the boys so badly that they both scream loudly and leap out of the grave, both landing on their bottoms as they scurry away from the half of the wolf corpse.
Rory covered her mouth in disgust, "Oh, that is sick." She groaned, looking away from the dead animal.
In the foreground, a flowering plant with purple petals can be seen, but neither Scott nor Stiles notice as Stiles finally questions what they've just uncovered, "What the hell is that?"
"It's a wolf."
"Yeah, I can see that." Stiles said sarcastically, "I thought you said you smelled blood, as in human blood?"
Scott shrugs before throwing his hands up, not knowing what else to say, "I told you something was different..."
Stiles, completely dumbfounded, throws his own hands up incredulously, "This doesn't make sense."
"I think it's time to go." Rory tells Stiles, "Who knows when Derek is coming back."
Stiles crouched down to get to Scott's level, "Okay. We should go. Help me cover this up." He says before moving to start pushing the dirt back into the grave with his hands, Scott moving to do the same.
"Stiles..." Rory called out to him, pointing to a purple flower that wasn't too far from the burial site, "What's this?"
Stiles stopped to look at the flower she pointed to and Scott took notice of Stiles' change in demeanor and questions him on it, "What's wrong?"
"You see that flower?" He pointed to it.
Scott frowns in confusion, not understanding the relevance, "What about it?"
"I think it's wolfsbane." He tells him and Rory's eyes widened in shock. She couldn't help but think why a poisonous plant would be buried next to a wolf.
Scott frowned in confusion, "What's that?"
Both Stiles and Rory looked at him incredulously, "How is this guy a werewolf but doesn't even know the basics?" Rory questions. If she ever became anything of the supernatural, she'd do all the research in the world to know about it. Like, for one, what could hurt or kill me—like wolfsbane to a werewolf.
Stiles scoffed at Scott's ignorance, "Uh... haven't you ever seen The Wolf Man?" He asked his friend.
Scott shakes his head, "No?"
"Lon Chaney Junior? Claude Rains?" Scott shakes his head again, more impatiently, and Stiles becomes even more exasperated, "The original, classic werewolf movie?"
Rory ran a hand down her face, "Oh, my God. He's hopeless." She groaned.
Scott sighed impatiently, "No!" He thinks they're wasting time talking about this, Derek could be back anytime. Stiles makes a face at him, and Scott loses his patience, "What?"
Stiles shakes his head, completely appalled by Scott's ignorance regarding cinematic classics, "You are so unprepared for this."
Stiles pushes himself up to his feet and runs over to the flower, pulling the entire plant up by the roots and gaping in surprise when he realises that the base of the plant has more twine rope tied around it, which is also buried underground.
He gently pulls up the rope, which has randomly placed wolfsbane petals attached at various points along the length of it, only to find it is connected to the bundle of burlap around the wolf's head, the long length of it buried around the grave in a spiral pattern which glows red as Stiles unravels it.
Scott looks at Stiles with a skeptical expression, confused as to why they're wasting their time with this, when suddenly, Rory looks down and is startled when she sees the grave, "Stiles..."
Stiles looks up and sees Rory and Scott staring in the grave with a shocked expression, so he walks over to where Scott is standing so he can see it from Scott and Rory's vantage point. When he follows Scott's line of sight, he yelps and jumps back a step, grabbing Scott's shoulder with his left hand to steady himself, "Oh!"
He wasn't sure what he was expecting, but it sure wasn't the upper half of the human female body that Scott found in the woods the night he was bitten, staring blankly up at them.
Stiles gasps in shock while Rory covered her mouth in horror. Derek Hale was the murderer.
