Defeatism + Music

Hello! I'm back on my bullshit and no one can stop me (though I really wish someone would). Today I have decided to once again take some time to assign some songs I love to characters, though this time it is not Taylor Swift specific. This was sparked by me driving and hearing two songs that made me think, huh, this really fits *insert character ship here.* So I've decided to assign songs I love to some of the relationships in Defeatism, because I am annoying.

As always, if this annoys you, please ignore it and I apologize. I am just a simple girl with hyper fixations and a brain that won't shut up, so I must give it reprieve in the form of word-vomitting my thoughts. Please forgive me.

1. Moonie Saintin by (user whose account is deleted) and Maverick Santiago by cryptidminds

Song: Green Light by Lorde

Explanation: Moonie and Maverick are so Green Light coded. If you have seen New Girl, then you know this song is in a very famous scene of the show (which I will not spoil, in case you haven't seen it). Tell me right now that the scene a few chapters back where Maverick tears off to find Moonie meanwhile Moonie is also searching for Maverick and they just keep missing each other isn't just that New Girl scene energy. Otherwise! The chorus of the song is like, I'll come get my things if that's what you want but I won't be able to let go. Lorde says she's waiting for the green light, and she means she's waiting for the okay to move on from a relationship and just let go. BUT. That's not how New Girl used it and that's not how I'm using it. Moonie and Maverick are both waiting for the green light from each other to push things further in their relationship, to move from friends to more!! Also this song is just fun and upbeat and I love it so I assign it to them because they are fun and upbeat and I love them (except I guess they're not that fun when they're almost dying but excuse that oop)

2. Elodie Daniels by me and Marcellus Singh by golden-rebel

Song: Would That I by Hozier

Explanation: HEAR ME OUT. This song is about Hozier finding comfort in easy past relationships, how in the past he saw love as a type of shield from the outside world, how he wanted it to be easy and calm. In the verses, he talks of these past loves and compares them to trees, because of the shelter and shade they provided him. In the chorus he strips that away and is like, uh uh, not anymore. Now I know that love is passion and fire. The girl that I'm in love with now is flames, burning down the 'trees' of my past loves, and I love her for it. Obviously, Elodie and Marcellus do not have past or current loves. But if you see it as like, they used to find comfort in not getting too close to people, or in meaningless hookups, and that each other are the flames burning it down, I think it fits so fucking well. Hozier says "fretted fire but that was long ago" and like, THEM. They feared love and letting someone in but now they're doing it and they're like. Okay yeah. I also think Oil has compared Elodie to a flame in Marcellus' eyes in past chapters maybe (I'm thinking of the star metaphor a bit) and how he sees her as so burning hot and not cold like him, and I think that maybe that is why I heard this song and was like yep uh huh. Them. They're burning down their past (bad) coping mechanisms with the help of each other. They're the flames, hell yeah.

Also, Are You Bored Yet? by Wallows is so them as well, but I digress.

3. Tempest Morgan by ceaseless-watchr and Damien Arlington by blythering

Song: We'll Never Have Sex by Leith Ross

Explanation: I have no real basis for this, but this song is just so goddamn sweet and makes me want to cry and scream. I think I hear the whole second verse (You look perfect, you look different / I don't wonder about your indifference / If I said you could never touch me / You'd come over and say I looked lovely) and just think of them, maybe. Like they'll do anything for each other's comfort, yanno? The whole story I didn't really see them coming, if I'm honest. I just knew I loved them as a pair, the bond they shared, how from the very beginning they were always looking out for one another. Then it turned to more, and I was like, okay, yes. Absolutely. Duh. I just think of Tempest and what she's been through with her ex, and how scared she must be, and how she's deeply in love with one of her dearest friends, and how crazy that must all feel for her. Then he offers to claim that the baby is his, and it's like oh my god, I'm in love with you, please don't do this to me. Don't let me have you but not really, you know? This song is simple and sweet, and so was their first kiss in a way. Tempest said she loved him, thinking that would be enough to turn him away, and he asked to kiss her. He doesn't want or need anything else from her, you know? Like, he doesn't need anything in return to help her ever. And he kisses her, because he wants to kiss her, and that's it. Idk I love them a lot and Oil has just done a fantastic job of creating so many relationships that I'm obsessed with.

4. Galilee Larson by curiosityanddreams and Callie Romano by ladyqueenish

Song: True Blue by boygenius

Explanation: I am a Lucy Dacus fan first, a human being second. This was her song when boygenius released the first three singles from their debut album, and immediately it was my fav. As a Lucy Dacus fan, I am well versed in her exploration of finding oneself and unconditional love throughout her songs. While obviously this song is pretty specific in its lyrics and tells a story, I think it's the meaning that fits Galilee and Callie so well. Like the chorus saying "And it feels good to be known so well / I can't hide from you like I hide from myself" like okay??? Callie and Gally core huh??? If Defeatism was some form of visual media, this is the song that would be playing during the scene where Galilee talks to Callie while she paints. Callie sees Galilee when nearly no one else does. Callie takes the time to draw and paint her, sees the beauty in her, notices the rooms she walks into. Galilee sees Callie too, and she demonstrates that during that scene. She discusses what color she thinks Callie would be and Callie is touched because even she had never thought of that. I don't know, there's just something beautiful about these two, and I think this song lends to that. There's no hiding when they're together, that's why Callie found it so hard to be around Galilee after the wine glass accident. Ugh, beautiful wonderful babies that deserve to live and kiss much much more (hint hint, Oil)

5. Galilee Larson by Oil and Jerry Winnerson by captain_sharrie

Song: I Wouldn't Ask You by Clairo

Explanation: This song is very literal. Clairo literally wrote it about her boyfriend who cared for her while she was hospitalized, and she repeats over and over again "I wouldn't ask you to take care of me." I'm really really obsessed with this song and have been for years, because like I get it. The intimacy and the vulnerability to be cared for by another person. I don't know. I think it just lends to the way Jerry has cared for Galilee since her accident. I don't personally ship Galilee and Jerry in a romantic sense (team Callie+Galilee and Jerry+Ro over here) so this is more just a platonic thing in my eyes, but still. The song tackles the struggle of letting someone in, and I think that lends to them. They're both outcasts amongst the group, struggling desperately to get in and make friends and to be wanted, but not really knowing how. Like, Jerry is buying video games to play with Marcellus and Galilee is throwing parties and always being present and they're just trying their best. The song struggles with like, trying to get close with someone but now knowing how, while simultaneously saying I would never ask you to care for me, I don't want to be a burden, and that feels like them to me.

6. Ro Di'Astolla by Splenxst and Jerry Winnerson by creator previously mentioned!

Song: Sweet Talk by Saint Motel

Explanation: Okay, hear me out, if this book existed in an alternate universe where their lives weren't quite literally devolving before our eyes, Ro and Jerry could be the leads in an A24 quirky coming of age college story. Like they would be such perfect leads. This guy who is weird and doesn't really have any friends and this girl who is mean and also doesn't really have any friends. Like they are so cute and we don't give them enough credit for it!! Like, the scene of Ro drunk telling Jerry she has a secret she doesn't remember had me giggling and kicking my feet. Like I have a plethora of tropes that I enjoy, but whatever they are is certainly one of them. This song is fun and upbeat and would fit perfectly in an indie movie, so I feel like it fits them. Like the lines "Oh, when you laugh / I forget that it's about me / But it's alright / Yeah, cause being your punchline still is something" COME ON. Like okay not an exact fit and I am projecting but if they got to know each other more I am so certain that would be them. Like Ro would be jokingly mean as her little defense mechanism and Jerry would be his goofy intellectual self and I would eat that shit up.

okayyyy I'm done being annoying now. I really think if I just made playlists for the stories I enjoyed I wouldn't have to be this annoying, but then I would want to share said playlists, and my Spotify is pretty connected to my irl self so sigh, cannot do that. This will suffice for now. If you made it this far, thank you for indulging my annoyingness love u goodbye <3
