"LET'S go see what the deal is." Ponyboy said, hopping out. "What for?" Dally sounded irritated. "Get back in here before I beat your head in." Ponyboy didn't listen and Johnny started to follow him. Dallas started to cuss the two boys out and didn't realize that a child (Kimmy) was there, plugging her ears. He quickly turned to her. "Are you gonna follow them?!" She shook her head, scared.

There was a crowd of people at the church, and most of them were little kids. Ponyboy tapped the nearest adult on the shoulder. "What's going on?" "Well, we don't know for sure what happened." He said in a cheerful tone.

"We were having a school picnic up here and the first thing we knew, the place is burning up. Thank goodness this is a wet season and the old thing is worthless anyway." He shouted to the kids. "Stand back, children. The firemen will be coming soon." "I bet we started." Ponyboy said to Johnny. "We must have dropped a lighted cigarette or something."

About that time a lady ran up. "Jerry, some of the kids are missing." "They're probably around here somewhere. You can't tell with all this excitement where they might be." Jerry replied. "No." The lady shook her head. "They've been missing for at least half an hour. I thought they were climbing the hill..." Everybody froze. It was very faint, but you could hear someone screaming...and it sounded like it was from the church.

The lady went white. "I told them not to play in the church...I told them..." She looked like she was going to scream, so Jerry shook her by the shoulders. "I'll get them, don't worry!" Ponyboy started to run towards the raging inferno but Jerry grabbed him. "You kids stay here!" Ponyboy jerked loose and ran. All he could think of was: We started it! We started it! We started it!

Johnny joined him and there was no way the boys were going through the flaming door, so he picked up a big rock and slammed it to it. And they went in. "Is that guy coming?" Ponyboy asked Johnny. "The window stopped him." Johnny replied. "How come? Too scared?" Ponyboy teased. "Too fat, man." Johnny replied. They found a couple of kids at the back of the church, screaming their lungs out.

"Hang on, we'll get you out!" Johnny yelled, trying to calm down the screaming kids, even though he was scared too. He and Ponyboy were working together to get the kids out (one kid bit Pony) and Kimmy and Dally were waiting at the window to take the kids to safety. Once all the kids were safe, Ponyboy got out with Dally's help but Johnny was taking his time. From what Kimmy remembered years after the incident, was that she heard Johnny screaming for help, her wanting to go and help him, but Dally told her no before knocking Pony out.

As she protected her unconscious older brother, the old church burned down to the ground, Kimmy remembered screaming for Johnny and Dallas, and trying to get Ponyboy to wake up.

And that's when her world went up in flames.
