20. call it what you want
It was a lazy Sunday afternoon, and Shubman was sprawled on their couch, lost in the pages of a book. The light from the window filtered through the curtains, casting a soft glow on the room.
Kamari was sitting on the floor nearby, her legs crossed under her as she was busy sketching in her notebook, humming along to a song that played softly from her phone.
She looked over at him, her gaze lingering on the way his eyes flicked back and forth across the page, so immersed in the book.
The sight was somehow comforting—Shubman, the cricket star, so effortlessly relaxed and content in the simplicity of the moment.
Kamari smiled to herself, her mind running through a hundred thoughts, each one more romantic than the last.
She had been thinking about this for a while, but today something felt different.
Taking a deep breath, Kamari closed her notebook, stood up and walked over to him. She leaned down and sat on the armrest of the couch beside him, watching him for a moment, waiting for him to look up.
When he finally glanced up, meeting her eyes, she gave him a soft, teasing smile. "Hey," she started, her voice light but with a certain tenderness.
"You know how much I love you, right?"
Shubman's lips curled into a smile, his eyes twinkling with affection as he placed the book down on his lap. "I think I've got a pretty good idea, yeah."
Kamari's heart skipped a beat, but she steadied herself. She took his hand in hers and squeezed it gently. "Well, there's something I've been meaning to ask you."
Shubman raised an eyebrow, his curiosity piqued. "What is it, baby?"
Kamari took a deep breath. This was it. She had no idea how he'd react, but she was determined.
With a playful glint in her eyes, she tilted her head slightly, her lips curling into a grin. She leaned closer to him and, with all the confidence she could muster, she spoke the words she'd been rehearsing in her head for days.
"'My baby's fit like a daydream, walking with his head down, I'm the one he's walking to'—you know, I think I want to be the one you're walking to for the rest of our lives," she said, quoting a lyric from Taylor Swift's Call It What You Want.
Shubman blinked, processing what she'd just said. His lips parted, and for a second, his mind raced. Kamari... just quoted Taylor Swift to propose to him?
He didn't even know how to respond, but the softness in her voice and the warmth in her eyes made his heart skip a beat.
She was serious.
Kamari laughed nervously, but there was no mistaking the sincerity in her expression.
"So, Shubman... will you marry me?" she asked, her voice almost a whisper, but it felt as if it filled the room.
Shubman stared at her for a long moment, taking in her words, her beauty, and the pure love she was offering him.
The suddenness of it all caught him off guard but in the best possible way. There was no doubt in his mind, no hesitation.
He let out a breath, and then a grin spread across his face. He reached out, cupping her face in his hands, his thumbs brushing over her cheek.
"Kamari," he said softly, his voice full of awe. "Are you... are you asking me to marry you with a Taylor Swift lyric?"
Kamari chuckled, rolling her eyes playfully. "Hey, don't knock it until you've tried it." She smiled at him. "You're the one I want to walk through life with. For real."
Shubman shook his head in disbelief, still grinning. "Well, that's the most you thing ever, and I love it."
He kissed her forehead softly, still holding her face. "Yes, a thousand times yes. I'll marry you, Kamari."
Her heart soared. She laughed out loud, the sound of it bright and full of joy. She pulled him into a hug, pressing her cheek against his chest as he wrapped his arms around her tightly.
"Seriously?" she asked, pulling back just enough to look up at him.
Shubman nodded, his smile never fading. "I'm yours, always. I can't imagine spending my life with anyone else. So yes, I'll marry you."
Kamari's smile was radiant as she kissed him, her heart racing with happiness.
"I can't believe this is happening," she murmured against his lips.
"I can't believe you did that with a Taylor Swift lyric," Shubman teased, his hand brushing through her hair.
She grinned, pulling back just enough to look into his eyes.
"Well, you know me... I'm all about the dramatic gestures."
Shubman laughed, squeezing her hand as he kissed her once more. "I love you, you know that, right?"
Kamari leaned against him, content and at peace. "I love you too, more than anything."
And just like that, their world felt a little bit more complete.
In the quiet comfort of their home, with the music softly playing in the background, they made a promise to each other—no grand speeches, no over-the-top moments, just two people who loved each other and were ready to take the next step together.
It wasn't about the proposal. It wasn't about the Taylor Swift lyric. It was about the feeling in their hearts that knew they were meant to be.
So yeah, call it what you want.
