Roya looked up from her knives and met her brother Toro, who was throwing credits on the table and scowling at his older sister. "What were you able to get?" he asked her, pointing at his own credits.
The brown-haired woman rolled her eyes in annoyance, regretting her decision to seek shelter with Toro after the death of her sister and mother.
"Double what you managed," she hissed in annoyance, tossing the cloth bag full of credits onto the table. Toro clicked his tongue in annoyance and sat down on the table, directly in front of Roya and sighed. "I have a job," he admitted in a lowered voice and immediately got Roya's attention. "You have a job?" she wanted to know, amused.
Toro immediately felt attacked and stood up. "You think I'm not capable of that?"
Laughing, Roya stood up and put her knives back in her belt before placing a hand on her older brother's shoulder. "That's right."
Hissing, he pushed that hand away.
"So tell me, Tori," Roya began with a grin on her face. It might be that Roya and Toro didn't always get on entirely well, but in any case, the two were siblings and loved each other. In their own weird way. "What's your job?"
"Fennec Shand-," he told her excitedly before Roya stopped him already. "Okay, forget it. Fennec Shand? She's an elite mercenary, sweetheart. You wouldn't make it anywhere near her."
"Come on! I know exactly where she is. We can make it! With her, I could become a legend in the guild and so could you," he tried to change her mind while stroking his hair with his hand shaking with excitement.
"I don't want to be in the guild and you know it." Roya closed her grey eyes, which she inherited from her mother, and sighed.
"You are not a fighter, Toro. You can't," she breathed honestly, but at that moment nothing could change Toro's mind. He grabbed his black jacket that was lying on one of the benches and put an arm around his sister's waist, who allowed the whole thing with a heavy heart. His typical smell enveloped her.
"Let's go to the canteen and relax a bit, shall we?" Toro pulled her along, giving her no choice at all, so she just ran along.
Once there, there were many criminals and also many from the guild, but one man among all caught Roya's eye immediately. A Mandalorian.
Toro saw him too, which made his eyes double in size. "Do you see what I see?" Toro grinned at his sister, who thought the whole thing was anything but good. "Yes, and I clearly see that this is a waste of time."
Toro, on the other hand, just rolled his eyes. "Come on, Ro."
Her brother pulled her along, allowing his piercing on his ear to be seen in light. He was an attractive man, but unfortunately far too reckless and he couldn't really fight either. That was why Roya wondered where he kept getting so many credits.
"Hey, Mandalorian!"
The broad-built man in the shining Mandalorian armour turned puzzled at the voice and stopped quietly when he saw the two siblings. Toro walked confidently towards Mando, while Roya merely plodded behind, annoyed. Mando's eyes first examined the young man before he looked at Roya. She was taller than other women, but she was not at all lacking in beauty. Her long brown hair fell softly down her back and her weapons were always at hand.
She radiated a formidable aura, though the expression on her face regarded Mando as unimpressed as Mando did under his helmet.
"If you're looking for a job, big guy, go ahead and sit down," Toro began, gesturing to the seating area. The Mandalorian seemed hesitant at first, but he needed the credits and so on the spur of the moment this seemed like a good option after all.
He sat down, followed by Toro and Roya across from him. She couldn't see it, but Mando could see exactly how her gaze kept examining the man."Names Toro, Toro Calican. And this is my wonderful sister, Roya," he introduced himself and then the woman next to him.
Mando had no intention of answering, but just continued to look at the two of them. He waited to hear more from the two of them, and incidentally found it quite amusing to watch this Toro trying to make himself important.
"Listen, I have a job and I need the help of a skilled man," Toro admitted, taking one deep breath and looking around him as Roya rolled her eyes again and crossed her arms in front of her chest.
Toro placed a disc on the table where a hologram appeared, of the target.
"Picked this up before I left Mid Rim. Fennec Shand, an assassin. Heard she's been under the run ever since the new Republic put all her employers in lockdown."
"I know the name," Mando said through his modulated voice. His voice sounded deep and soothing, though Roya didn't miss how rough and neutral it sounded.
Toro placed a hand on Roya's leg under the table, secretly needing support. He knew she would never show her affection with words, but she was more than familiar with gestures.
Ro, as Toro called her, also placed her hand on his briefly before crossing her arms again and listening to Toro continue to speak.
"I followed this tracking fob here. Now the positional data suggests she headed out beyond the dune sea. Should be an easy job."
Roya's eyebrows shot up and she looked at her brother from the side. "You didn't tell me about that, though," she remarked, taken aback by his competence. The Mandalorian stayed out of the discussion and leaned back, his arms folded in front of the breastplate of his armour. It was the first time he had heard her voice and somehow he had hoped that she was the one who did most of the talking. Her voice was soft, like that of an angel, but her appearance contradicted that. But Roya definitely knew what to say and what not to say. She sat there tensely, eyeing her brother.
Toro apparently didn't feel like arguing, so he just gave her a warning look, which she acknowledged with a roll of her eyes.
Mando sighed loudly. "Have fun with that."
He stood up and made to leave, but Toro quickly got up and jumped over Roya's legs so he could quickly come to a stop in front of the Mandalorian.
"Wait, wait! Hey, I thought you needed a job?"
"How long with the guild?" Mando fired back looking at him angrily through his visor. It wasn't visible from the outside, but Roya nevertheless put herself between them and pushed Toro back a little before standing beside him.
"Long enough," Toro replied, causing a snort to escape Roya. The Mandalorian immediately turned his head to Roya.
"Don't lie to him, Toro. I'm sure the good man knows as well as you and I do that Fennec Shand is as good as unapproachable." Roya was right on that point, which was why the Mandalorian didn't need to say anything more about it.
"She's right. If you go after her, you won't make it past sunrise."
Mando turned again and walked towards the exit, but Toro was quick again and stopped the man. Roya didn't even bother to run after him quickly, but sauntered over to him, relaxed.
"This is my first job," he admitted and Mando snorted. "You can keep the money, all of it. I just need a job to get into the guild."
"I can't do this on my own," he added desperately, knowing his sister would never help and if she did, he could put her in grave danger.
It was getting on Roya's nerves that her brother was so infatuated with getting into the guild and it shocked her how far he had gone to do it. She didn't even know that much yet.
Mando saw Roya brooding, biting her lips thoughtfully. He didn't know what was wrong with him, but something about her was different. Her look that carried so much history behind it and that annoyed eye-rolling that always followed when her brother spoke too much.
Finally, he had come to a decision.
"Meet me at the hangar three-five in half an hour. Bring two speeder bikes and give me the tracking fob."
Toro was pleased but destroyed the tracking fob, causing Mando and Roya to look at him in confusion. "What the hell?"
"Don't worry. Got it all memorised." Roya was surprised that the Mandalorian really wanted to take the job that she laughed unintentionally. Mando raised an eyebrow under his helmet and looked at the girl for a moment before turning and leaving.
"Yes! I told you this would be easy."
Roya shook her head. "Well, have fun with him together."
Toro immediately held her back by the hand and turned her to face him when she actually wanted to leave. To be honest, Roya didn't feel like going on this mission at all, nor did she have a good feeling about it. It was dangerous and Toro just wasn't cut out for it.
"You have to come with me," Toro asked her gently. His sister felt uncomfortable about it and sighed, "It's your job, I don't see why I should come."
"I didn't want you with me for now because it's going to be dangerous, but now that we have a fucking Mandalorian on board it's going to be a piece of cake."
Roya considered for a moment and lowered her gaze. It was dangerous, no question. And she'd been through so much already and had hoped to finally find her peace here with Toro, but she actually knew her brother well enough to know that it wouldn't be.
Eyes wide, Toro looked down at his older sister and took her hands in his. "Please. I don't want to go through this alone." Just like Roya had to go through everything alone.
Roya closed her eyes and expelled her breath loudly. "Fine. But you do what the Mandalorian tells you."
"Yes, Sir!"
Roya ran out of the canteen and leaned against the wall outside. Thousands of thoughts flooded her mind and she wished everything was different. Toro didn't know what happened to his mother and other sister then. No. Only Roya knew and she had no intention of telling him. He was to be led to believe that Roya simply needed time off and a different life.
Which wasn't such a big lie.
And now she had ridden herself into a mission with her inexperienced brother and an unpredictable Mandalorian. Could the day get any worse?
