Chapter Ten
"Awwww! A little Keefoster snuggle fest!"
"Quiet down Ro. You don't want to wake them."
"Nah, Hunkyhair's been sleeping for HOURS."
Sophie yawned and opened her eyes. Ro and Elwin were standing near the cot.
"Um? Hello?" Sophie said, raising an eyebrow.
"Sorry Sophie, we didn't mean to wake you," Elwin apologized.
"It's fine. What time is it?"
"Ha! It's 2:00 PM!" Ro gestured out the window, the afternoon light was spilling in the room.
"2:00 PM?!" Sophie cried, then slammed a hand over her mouth. But Keefe already woke up.
"Sophie?" He said drowsily.
"Sorry Keefe," She apologized, "I didn't mean to wake you."
"It's okay," Keefe yawned, "What time is it?" He mumbled.
"It's um-"
"2:00 PM!" Ro finished for her.
"2:00 PM?!" He cried, sitting up quickly.
"Reeeelllllaaaaxxxx it's not like you have anything to do!" Ro rolled her eyes, "Well, except for snuggling blondie over here."
Sophie's whole face turned red. She took a glance at Keefe and saw that his face was just as red as her's. Wow. It really is fun to make someone blush. But not when you're blushing yourself.
"Stop torturing Keefe, Ro," Sophie rolled her eyes.
"I think you mean Hunkyhair," Ro corrected.
Sophie rolled her eyes again.
"Sorry to interrupt um... Whatever this is, but now that's Keefe's awake, I'm going to need him to take these exlair's."
"Oops. Sorry I didn't tell you he was awake, Elwin. I guess I just got... Distracted?"
"I bet they were kissing!" Ro teased.
"We were NOT kissing!" Sophie protested with a beet red face.
"Sophie doesn't like me okay? She's in love with Fitz. Just DROP IT," Keefe sounded so stern, and he was glaring daggers at Ro, as if she knew something Sophie didn't.
If only he knew how much Sophie was falling in love with him. She's gonna have to tell Keefe that she broke up with Fitz-again-two weeks ago.
Elwin sent a knowing look in her direction that seemed to say, tell him! But Sophie shook her head quickly. Keefe already had enough on his plate. She needed to wait a little longer before she made any moves or whatever.
"Well, whatever. I'm gonna head out. Have fun with your girlfriend!" Ro called. Sophie's face turned to fire.
"She is NOT my girlfriend!" Keefe yelled, but Ro had already left.
"Sorry about that," Keefe blushed and turned to Sophie. Luckily she was saved from having to come with a response by Elwin and his tray of exlair's.
"Drink up, and this time, tell me when you're done," Elwin gave her a look.
"Right. Sorry."
Then Elwin left for his office, and it was just the two of them.
"Thanks Foster," Keefe smiled at Sophie, grabbing the nearest exlair and chugging it.
"For what?"
"For everything. You're amazing. And I'm the luckiest person in the world to get to be your friend."
Sophie cringed slightly. Friend. Friend. She was just a friend to Keefe. Never anything else. Always just a friend.
"Hey, you okay Foster? Your mood just shifted to... disappointment?" He said sadly, probably assuming that she didn't want to be his friend. Which was totally wrong, of course. It's just that... She didn't want to be friends anymore. She wanted to be more than friends.
"Oh, yeah sorry. Oh, I should probably tell you something," Sophie changed the subject.
"What?"
Sophie's mind was practically screaming insert joke here. Since when does Keefe say what? Without adding something about his fabulous hair, or handsome face?
"You sure you're okay?" Keefe asked again, a concerned look in his eyes.
"Yeah, I'm fine, don't worry. Anyways I was going to tell you that Fitz and I broke up. 2 weeks ago."
Sophie swore she saw a look of excitement in Keefe's eyes, but it vanished as quick as it came, leaving Sophie to wonder if she had seen it at all.
"Are you okay?" He asked.
"Yeah. I was the one to end it."
"Oh?"
"Yeah. Remember how I told you about that other boy?" Sophie asked.
"Yeah. I think so," Keefe nodded.
"Well... I realized he's worth it. Well... He was always worth it. I just didn't realize it then. But now I do."
"Oh. Are you sure you can't tell me who it is?"
"No. Not yet."
Keefe looked like he wanted to say more, but he didn't press further. He just grabbed a white exlair and drank it.
"Ew! What is this?!" He gagged.
And on and on that went until they were finally done with the tray. Sophie went to pick it up and take it to Elwin's office. She wasn't going to forget to do that again.
"We're done Elwin," Sophie said, setting the tray down on his desk. Elwin was rummaging through a stuffed drawer.
"Thanks," He called, not looking over at her. Sophie turned to leave the room. She pushed open the door and walked back over to Keefe.
He was sitting on top of the sheets, his legs tucked into his chest. His eyes were squeezed shut and he was trembling. He was holding his head in his hands and whispering, "I don't know. I don't know. I don't know." Over and over.
"Keefe!" Sophie raced over to him and grabbed his shoulders, "Keefe! Snap out of it!"
His body shook as he shouted to her, "STOP! It hurts. It hurts." He started to shake harder.
"KEEFE!" Sophie screamed, shaking him, "It's Sophie! Wake up! Please wake up!" Sophie shouted, "Please," She whispered, "Please." Tears ran down her face as she buried her head in her hands.
"Sophie?" Keefe said softly.
"Keefe!" Sophie shouted, tackling him with a hug, "Wha-what hap-pened?" She choked through tears.
Keefe wrapped his arms around her back and clung to her. She could feel his tears stain her tunic.
"I-I don't-kn-know."
"I thought-I-" She took a shaky breath, "I can't lose you," Sophie whispered into his ear and squeezed him harder.
They stayed like that for hours until their breath calmed down, and they ran out of tears to cry.
"Are you okay?" Sophie whispered, after a while.
"I-I don't know." Sophie could still feel Keefe trembling slightly in her arms, and she stroked his blonde hair to calm him down.
"Sh. Sh. Sh. We're gonna get through this. Together."
Keefe squeezed her hand.
"What if... What if... I'm... Broken. Forever?" Keefe said softly, tracing the word Legacy on his wrist with his free hand.
"You are not broken, Keefe. They did not break you," Sophie stared into his scared ice blue eyes. She had never seen him more afraid, "They did not break you," She repeated.
Keefe leaned his head on her shoulder and played with her blonde hair.
How could they do this to him?! How could they... Keefe was perfect. He was kind and sweet, he was funny and brave. He always knew how to make her laugh when no one could, and he was the strongest person she had ever met. He never gave up, and he was always there for her. No matter what had happened to him, he was always there for her. He would comfort her when she was hurting, and he would make sure she was okay before worrying about himself. She was his number one priority. And Sophie had no idea why. Why would Keefe be friends with someone like her? She let him get captured by the Neverseen, she constantly dragged him into danger, and she wasn't as perfect as he was. Not even close. Why would he want to be friends with her?
"Sophie?" Keefe interrupted her thoughts.
"Yeah, Keefe?" Sophie asked.
"What's wrong?"
He must have felt her mood shift.
"I'm just... Worried. Sorry."
"You're worried about me aren't you? I'm really sorry. You should go. You don't need to stress over me. You have way more important things to worry about," He whispered.
Sophie lifted his chin to face hers.
"You. Are my number one priority," She said softly.
"And you're mine."
And in that moment all Sophie wanted to say was, "I love you. So much." But he wasn't ready for that yet. Besides, he probably just thought of her as a friend anyway. So Sophie didn't say anything. She just squeezed his hand tighter, and held him in her arms until he fell asleep.
