1 week later...
"Do you know where he is?" Sophie demanded.
"The collective is out looking for him right now. We don't know where he is, but we'll find him. Did you try to transmit?" Mr. Forkle suggested.
"I thought about it. I was just nervous to do it since when I was captured they knew if I was transmitting or not. They might even... Hurt him if they know I've been talking to him. Besides... What if... What if... He doesn't answer... Because... Because..." Sophie couldn't finish that thought.
Nope.
Nope.
Nope.
Mr. Forkle put a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
"We're doing all we can. I'm sure Mr. Sencen is fine."
"Sure," Sophie mumbled, turning away. She had called this meeting with him to try and help Keefe. But maybe she just wanted to feel like she had some control in this whole mess. Guess this conversation just proves that she didn't.
Sophie felt tears prick her eyes again at the thought of Keefe strapped to a chair being burned alive for information he didn't know.
"I'll... Be right back," She couldn't hide the thickness in her voice.
"Take as much time as you need."
Sophie stumbled out of the door and ran to the Panakes tree. She slumped down underneath the bark and hugged her knees into her chest, wrapping her trembling arms around her legs and tucking her head into her knees, creating a Sophie-ball.
Images of Keefe filled her head. He was screaming for help. She could see it so clearly.
"SOPHIE! SOPHIE! HELP!"
"Keefe! Where are you?!" She was trapped in a maze of blackness it was closing around her, but she had to get to Keefe. Had to. Had to. Had to.
"SOPHIE!" He kept screaming.
"KEEFE!"
"SOPHIE! HELP!" He didn't seem to hear her. Tears spilled over Sophie's cheeks as she screamed his name in a blind rush.
"KEEFE! KEEFE!"
He didn't respond.
"KEEFE! Keefe?! Keefe!" KEEFE! WHERE ARE YOU!?" Then she collapsed to the ground trapped in the enteral darkness forever, with Keefe's muffled screams and the smell of smoke in the air. He was-
"Sophie!" Someone shouted.
Sophie jerked her head up from her trance.
"Fitz?" She whispered.
"Are you okay? What's wrong? What happened?" Fitz kneeled next to her.
"You haven't heard yet?"
"No. What is it? Why are you crying?"
Sophie quickly wiped the tears from her stained cheeks.
"Keefe," She said softly, "He was.... Taken. By the Neverseen."
Anger clouded Fitz's vision and he stood up furiously.
"How long?" He demanded sharply.
"We just found out a week ago," Sophie whispered.
Fitz ran an angry hand through his hair.
"Were you with him?"
"No."
"Why weren't you with him!?"
"I don't know," Sophie didn't have the strength to fight right now, and she knew Fitz was just angry.
"ARGH! Did you tell him something, something the Neverseen needed to know!?" Fitz ran another hand through his hair.
"I don't know!" Sophie shouted, standing up.
"Why don't you know?!"
"Why do you think?!"
"ARGH! I just-I-ARRGH!" He shouted, then stormed off. Tears pricked Sophie's wet eyes. She tried to fight them at first but then burst into another wave of burning tears. She was just starting to realize how much he meant to her... And now... He was gone.
No. She wouldn't let herself go there. No. No. No. Keefe was still alive, and she was going to-
"SOPHIE!" Mr. Forkle shouted, running to her at amazing speeds. Sophie jumped up from the Panakes tree.
"Mr. Forkle? Is something wrong?" Sophie began to panic.
"We found him," He breathed, "We found Keefe."
