Chapter Four

Sophie sat underneath the Panakes tree, the blue, pink, and purplish petals dancing in the cold wind above her, Sophie shivered in the chill, but she didn't mind it that much. The cold was numbing and it was a good distraction from all her responsibilities. A nice escape.

Sophie was beginning to think she was turning into Elsa when someone appeared, glittering in the distance.

"Hello?" Sophie asked.

"Hey, Sophie," A crisp accented voice called.

"Hey Fitz," Sophie hoped he wouldn't notice the slight disappointment on her face when she realized it was him instead of Keefe. But she didn't have a crush on Keefe... Right? No. She liked Fitz. They were meant to be. She just... Needed a little time.

So Sophie plastered on a smile and went to greet her boyfriend.

"How are you?" Sophie asked.

"I'm good."

"So... Did you come here to check on me, or something?" She asked.

"I came here to hang out if you want. And I brought you these," Fitz handed her a box of Mallowmelt, her favorite.

"Aww... Thanks, Fitz," Sophie blushed.

"Your welcome," Fitz smiled, his teal eyes sparkling. Unfortunately, Sophie's heart didn't flutter, even when she wanted it to.

Sophie smiled warmly and grabbed a bite of gooey Mallowmelt. She slowly sank her teeth into the first bite. Mmmmm... Yep. Mallowmelt is definitely the best.

"Thanks," She repeated, taking another bite.

"Your welcome. Hey, do you take that picture down?" Fitz asked. Sophie stopped chewing. Shoot. She forgot to take it down!

"Um, yep!" She lied, hoping that it was convincing. Sophie had never been a really good liar, unlike Keefe. Keefe. Soft, ruffled, blonde hair, shinning ice-blue eyes, crooked smirk.

"Sophie? You okay? You just totally zoned out there," Fitz asked.

"I did? Oh, sorry. I was just thinking about how good this Mallowmelt is," She said quickly. It wasn't an amazing excuse, and she could tell Fitz didn't buy it, but he didn't press further.

"Do you want to sit?" Sophie asked, gesturing to the Panakes tree.

"Sure," Fitz nodded.

They sat by underneath the Panakes tree, hands intertwined. But there was no electricity, no tingling, no spark. Sophie shrugged it off.

"So..." Fitz leaned in closer. She could tell he wanted to kiss her. But even as Sophie got closer and closer to him, she just wasn't feeling it. Their lips were seconds away when Sophie pushed him back.

"Sorry," She mumbled. Fitz looked hurt.

"Sophie? You do love me right?" He asked. Sophie had to fight the urge to cringe. Love... Was a strong word.

"I... Of course, I like you. Maybe not love yet... But... You broke up with me Fitz. Do you think it's just going to be perfect? Give it some time, okay?" Sophie pleaded. She hoped he listened.

"How long would I have to wait?"

"I-I don't know," Sophie admitted. Sophie couldn't miss the frustration in his eyes. It almost made her want to pull him in and kiss him, proving to him that she was ready, that he didn't need to wait. But at the same time it made her want to shove him backward and shout,

"Aren't I worth waiting for?!"

But she didn't do either of those things.

They sat there in uncomfortable silence for a while, before Fitz finally broke it.

"What's our next mission?" Fitz asked. Sophie mentally facepalmed herself, she had been so distracted in boys she forgot to plan, the Neverseen could strike any second! She didn't have time to wonder about silly problems like this.

"I... Have to check with team Valiant. Then I'll tell you," Sophie lied. She didn't know why she wasn't comfortable telling Fitz that she didn't have a plan yet. But maybe she was just too nervous to let him down.

"You do trust me though, right?"

"Yeah, I just need to check in with them first. I'll tell you straight after, promise."

"I don't know Sophie. Why can't you just tell me now?"

"Because."

"Because what?"

"Because!" She shouted. Fitz took a deep breath.

"Fine."

"Sophie! We need your help with Verdi!" Edaline shouted. Sophie mentally thanked the universe. Sophie would rather be brushing Verdi's teeth than being in this conversation with Fitz right now. Sophie hoped it wouldn't be this awkward around her boyfriend after a while.

If there even is a while.

"Sophie!" Grady called.

"Yeah! Right, coming!" Sophie shouted to them, "Sorry, Fitz. I gotta go. See you later?"

"Well... I could come with you if you want?" Fitz suggested.

"I wouldn't suggest it, the drool won't come out of your hair for a week at least," Sophie said. Fitz made a face.

"Okay, hang out later?"

"Sure," She agreed half-heartedly, before running off to Verdi's enclosure.
