just a bump
You, Jean, and Marco sat in the emergency waiting room, the minutes feeling like hours as you waited for the doctor to call for Connie. He was walking around the room, something you found weird, but it was keeping him distracted.
"Connie, why don't you just sit down?" You suggested once again and he shook his head, his feet still moving him around the room.
Jean leaned over to you, pulling the sleeve of your sweatshirt and grabbing your attention. Discreetly, he whispered, "Connie...he doesn't really like hospitals," he said, not really giving much away. You only nodded your head, wondering if it had something to do with Connie's family.
"So why didn't he fight against going to the hospital?" You inquired, your curiosity getting the best of you as questions racked your brain.
"It's-" Jean shifted uncomfortably in his seat, expressing that he wasn't going to say anything as he finished with, "It's just complicated..."
"...Connie Springer?" His head shot up when the nurse called his name, and the three of you stood up. The nurse eyed your group and scratched the back of his head in thought. He had short, smooth, light hair that was parted neatly down the middle and his name tag read "Moblit Berner". He carried a worried expression about himself— it was unsettling due to the circumstances.
"I can only allow one of you come back," the nurse smiled apologetically as the three of you looked at Connie. He stared with blank eyes before gesturing his hand at Jean, the ashy brown haired fellow looking somewhat surprised Connie picked him.
"I'll see what I can do for the two of you in a moment," he stated before guiding Jean and Connie into the other hallway, your eyes watching the two of them disappear behind the heavy doors.
"Well...now what?" You looked over at Marco and he shrugged, plopping down into the chair. You sat down beside him and propped your arm up on the armrest, allowing your hand to hold up your head as you let out an exasperated sigh.
"Do you think they'll take us to the actual waiting room?" You asked as you looked around where you were at now. People with bloody clothes or other things going on were surrounding you.
"Maybe...I'm not sure why we all couldn't go with Connie."
"Maybe so it's not so crowded?" You replied and Marco just shrugged as the two of you sat in silence. Neither one of you felt like talking, so you waited in comfortable silence and Marco ended up falling asleep on your shoulder.
About two hours had passed when a man walked up to you, clearing his throat. Marco woke up abruptly and glanced up at the mam. You looked up and took in his neat blonde hair and bushy eyebrows as he stared down at you, his blue eyes piercing.
"Are you here for Springer?" His voice was smooth and soft, not something you were expecting to hear since his face was so hard.
You caught a glance at his name tag and saw that it said "Erwin Smith". You and Marco looked back up at him and nodded your heads, wondering what news the man had to tell you.
A look of recognition came across Dr. Smith's face as he looked at Marco, but before Mr. Smith could say anything, Marco asked what he was here for.
"I'll be taking you to our standard waiting room where your other friend will be joining you shortly. We're examining Connie's hand right now, but it may take a while," Dr. Smith commented and you and Marco followed after him as he started to walk away.
"So...what do you do here...Dr. Smith?" You asked after he updated you on Connie's condition and what the next steps would be.
"Please, call me Erwin! I'm one of the orthopedic doctors here. I'll most likely be doing Connie's surgery." Erwin lead you to a large room where many other people were waiting. Some looked bored, some looked anxious, and some were crying. It felt weird being in a space like this where people were so vulnerable and most likely sad.
"Is there anything you two need?" Erwin asked and you shook your head no, grimacing at the sudden ache you were feeling. Erwin narrowed his eyes at you and Marco placed a hand on your shoulder.
"Is you head bothering you?" Erwin asked, his head tilting in concern.
"I hit my head when I collided with my friend but I should be fine," you responded, rubbing the back of your head.
"Doesn't seem like nothing...we take head injuries very seriously. Why don't you come with me and we'll get you set up with one of our ER docs," Erwin replied and Marco nodded his head in agreement. You saw no reason to not go with Erwin, so you left Marco behind, as he suggested it. He wanted to stay back unless any news of Connie would be delievered.
As you walked beside Erwin, you were quiet. You didn't think there was much wrong with you, but it wouldn't hurt to get it checked out. Erwin lead you into an examination room, telling you to sit tight while he went to go and find a doctor.
You sat on the examination bed, swinging your legs as you waited. The room was medium-sized and smelled of old carboard and disinfectants. The last time you'd been to the hospital was when you were born. You were a fairly healthy kid and had never broken a bone.
"Why are you swinging your legs?" A monotonous voice spoke up, tired and cold eyes staring straight into your soul. In front of you stood a man who was no more than 5'2". He had dark hair split down the middle, his bangs just above his eyes, and when he turned his head you noticed the undercut. His gray eyes were dark and like slits, just like Mikasa's. It sent a chill down your spine.
Not only was this man intimidating, he was extremely attractive. You'd never seen a man so handsome before, and it wasn't helping that he was a rich doctor.
"I was-uh-I was just-"
"Doesn't matter to me," he sat down on the wheely chair and crossed his left leg over to let his foot rest on his right thigh, his back straight. He had great posture.
"I'm Dr. Ackermann, the top ER doctor here. I'll be examining you," he stated whilst putting on a pair of gloves. He also put on a mask, something you found odd just for a head examination, but nonetheless, you let him get to work.
He went through protocol for a head injury and was gentle with you, never applying too much force. He was silent the entire time and only made quiet comments to himself that you couldn't quite decipher, but they sounded like they were about you.
"How's it going?" Erwin walked into the room and Dr. Ackermann didn't say a word. He leaned back from you and took his mask off, throwing it into the trash along with his gloves.
"How many times have I told you not to interrupt me when I'm working, Dr. Smith?" Dr. Ackermann was cold, but it didn't seem to phase Erwin.
"Well, she's Springer's friend. I'm only making sure that she's okay,"
"Springer? Tch, that kid."
"Levi-"
"It's Dr. Ackermann."
You sat there awkwardly, noticing how much tension had started to build up after that conversation. Clearly, these two had something going on.
"So...am I okay?" You butted in, trying to switch the attention away from whatever was happening, hoping it would calm things down a bit.
"It seems to be a very minor concussion. You'll have that bump for a few days, so I'd like for you to ice it to take the swelling down. No rigorous activity, or reading, watching TV, and playing video games for about 48 hours. Limit bright lights, loud noises and crowds for about 48 hours. You need to rest your brain since it's been bruised and I'd like you to follow up with your primary care provider sometime this week," Dr. Ackermann rose to his feet and placed his hands into his pockets, strutting out of the room without even a glance to Erwin.
"Wow he's-"
"A lot, I know," Erwin finished for you, leaning on the door frame. "We'll have a nurse get a folder with everything he said. Just follow that and you'll be fine," Erwin smiled softly and left you there alone with an aching head full of questions.

You and Jean decided to get food at the hospital but Marco needed to go home to finish homework. You were walking next to him in the hallway as you headed for the elevators to reach the cafeteria. Connie was about to come out of his surgery but Jean's stomach was hungry now and you didn't blame him.
"How do you think he's doing?" You asked.
"Well, if I know Connie he's most likely doing fine," Jean reassured you, after hearing the concern in your voice.
"Man, this has been a crazy day," you laughed half-heartedly but noticed Jean wasn't paying attention and instead followed his eyeline of where he was looking.
"Is that-" you squinted to see what Jean was staring at and saw a very familiar guy running around the hospital with a doctor chasing after him. Their hair was brown and in a high ponytail, their glasses large.
"It is," Jean answered and the both of you got up to see what was happening, hurrying down the hallway towards the commotion.
"Oh! Hey guys!" Connie yelled when he saw you, giggling furiously. He barreled over to you guys and tripped over his own feet. Jean lunged forward and caught him, helping Connie settle down onto the floor.
The doctor rushed over to you guys and you caught a glance at their nametag. It read "Hange Zoë". They bent down and let their hands rest on their knees as they tried to catch their breath.
"He was...he was freaking out, so I gave him some medicine to calm him down," they breathed out and you looked down at Connie who was now singing the ABCs.
"Dr. Zoë, what's going on here?" You turned your head to see Dr. Ackermann staring blanky at the four of you, his hands securely in his pockets.
"Oh nothing! Just a little mishap is all!" They laughed nervously, trying to haul Connie to his feet.
"I'll go find Dr. Smith. Don't move," Dr. Ackermann eyed all of you, briskly walking away down a hallway, his short stature quickly disappearing amidst all the other people.
Connie was now on his feet and leaning against Jean, his eyes partly open as he stared at you intently. You smiled a bit and wondered where his head was at.
"Zebras," he said in the most serious tone possible, his lips turning into a big smile as he started laughing at his own ridiculous comment.
"Okay...how about we get him back to his bed," Dr. Zoë suggested and pointed to the room behind you.
"Of course," you nodded your head as sole nurses rushed over to usher Connie into the room, knowing this would be a long, long day.
