๐๐๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ Maisie spotted in theย stateroom was the casket. It was gold, engraved with tragic Ancient Greek scenes of heroes. It was unnerving.
"A little nicer than cabin eleven, huh?" Luke said, proudly looking all over the room.
Maisie couldn't shake the bad feeling in her gut. She kept noticing the tiniest glimpses of regret in Luke's malevolent expression. Still, they were overpowered by the mean sneer of his smile.
He wore a white button-down and khaki pants, his hair slightly grown out, falling over his eyebrows. His scar was still there, a cruel reminder of the failed quest his father had sent him to.
He looked beautiful, Maisie thought. Then a second thought crept into her mind. Beautiful, like the devil.
"Sit," he said, gesturing to the sofa. Nobody sat.
"These are my assistants," he continued, introducing them to the giants. "Agrius and Oreius. Perhaps you've heard of them."
When nobody provided him with an answer, he said "You don't know Agrius and Oreius' story? Their mother... well, it's sad, really. Aphrodite ordered the youngย woman to fall in love. She refused and ran to Artemis for help. Artemis let her become one of her maiden huntresses, but Aphrodite got her revenge. She bewitched the young woman into falling in love with a bear. When Artemis found out, she abandoned the girl in disgust. Typical of the gods, wouldn't you say? They fight with one another and the poor humans get caught in the middle. The girl's twin sons here, Agrius and Oreius, have no love for Olympus. They like half-bloods well enough, though..."
"For lunch," Agrius growled.
Maisie took a step back as Oreius laughed uncontrollably, until his brother and Luke glared at him.
Luke took a seat on the sofa, propping his feet on the coffee table.
"So, Percy, how have you been?"
"You poisoned Thalia's tree," Percy cut right to the chase.
Luke sighed. "So what?"
"Are you insane?" Maisie finally found her voice. Luke looked at her, expression blank, though Maisie knew her words stirred him. "Thalia gave her life to save yours. And this is how you repay her? How could you dishonour her?"
"I didn't dishonour her!" he snapped, getting up from the sofa abruptly. "The gods dishonoured her. If Thalia were alive, she'd be on my side."
"Take her name out of your mouth," Annabeth shot angrily.
Luke's eyes narrowed, until they were two thin slits, anger evident in his face. "The gods have blinded you all. And you, Annabeth. If you're so angry about Thalia, why are you on a quest with this company?" He pointed to Tyson.
"Hey!" Percy said.
"Travelling with a Cyclops. I'm surprised at you, Annabeth." His voice was raising. "You of all people-"
Annabeth was on the brink of tears and Maisie wasn't going to have more of this. She quickly unsheathed one of her daggers and rushed towards Luke. Before he could realize what she was doing, she had slashed his bicep, blood now trickling down from it, staining his shirt.
He stumbled back, clutching his now cut arm. Maisie attempted a second hit, but he soon regained his footing and caught her wrist just in time. She raised her free hand to punch him, failing again, since he caught that wrist too.
"Let her go," Percy said, sternly, chanelling the leadership from deep within him. Luke didn't budge. Instead, he squeezed Maisie's wrists tighter, making sure she didn't escape his grasp.
Percy tried a different approach. "Listen. Your father sent us."
Maisie was sure this was the angriest she'd ever seen Luke, and would ever see him. His face went red, his eyes narrowed even more. His grip on her involuntarily tightened.
"Don't even mention him."
Percy went on. "He told us to take this boat. I thought it was just for a ride, but he sent us here to find you. He told me he won't give up on you, no matter how angry you are."
"Angry?" Luke roared. "Give up on me? He abandoned me, Percy! I want Olympus destroyed. Each time a half-blood joins us, he grows stronger," he said his gaze going to the gold casket. Maisie glanced at it, realization washing over her.
"Ew," she whispered.
"Whoa, you don't mean..." Percy trailed off.
"Kronos is re-forming," Luke confirmed.
"That's disgusting!" said Annabeth.
"Your mother was born from Zeus' split skull," he said to Annabeth but turned to Maisie too, apparently having heard her earlier remark. "I wouldn't talk."
"Go to Tartarus," Annabeth spat.
Luke sighed. "Shame."
He maneuvered so that he held Maisie's wrists with one hand and reached for a remote. With the push of a button, two uniformed crew members came in through the doors, armed.
"Good, security. I'm afraid we have some stowaways."
"Yes, sir."
Luke turned to Oreius. "Get these fools to the basement. The drakon needs to be fed. Don't fail me."
Agrius turned to him. "What about this one?" he asked, gesturing to Maisie.
"I'll deal with it," he said dismissively.
As the bear-man prodded the trio forward with his javelin, Annabeth turned to look at her sister. Maisie sent her the slightest nod. A silent agreement. Get out if you can. I'll be okay.
She couldn't break free from his frim grip, and she thought it best not to. It was either him, or the Aethiopian drakon.
"Are you seriously feeding them to the drakon?" she asked in disgust. She had faith that her younger companions would be able to get out of that situation, but she still had to make him feel bad for it.
He didn't respond. Instead, he waved one of the security guards over and made him take her daggers. Once he ensured she was unarmed, he let go of her wrists. Immediately, she rushed to the door, in an attempt to escape and save her friends.
The guards blocked the door, pushing her off. She stumbled back, grunting angrily.
"It's no use," Luke said. Some of the anger had dissipated from his voice. It was softer, almost tired, yet still rough.
Maisie turned to look at him, giving him her best death glare.
"You're terrible," she spat at him.
He took a step forward, making Maisie take a step back. That stopped him in his tracks.
"I just saved your life."
"By sacrificing my friends' lives? Your sister's life?" She hoped her words stung.
That was when they heard some commotion. Luke glanced at the doors, then back at her. He went around her, opening one door ever so slightly to see what was happening.
The twin giants appeared at the door, quietly telling him something that made the anger come back in his voice.
"What?" he nearly shouted.
He shut the doors harshly as he let his head fall, then sighed.
"Seems like your friends escaped."
Happiness surged through Maisie's entire body, her lips pulling themselves into a smile.
"Don't get too excited. We're not done here," he said and left her alone in the stateroom.
