IT WAS time for the glee club meeting and, as per usual, their director wasn't there yet. Trying to kill the time, the teens were around the room dancing or playing some instruments. Amelia was dancing with Brittany on one side of the room, away from Rachel's attempts of direct the choreography. When she twirled the girl, at the same time Mr. Schuester entered the room and both of them collide. Once he put the cheerleader aside, he looked at the others with a grin on his face.
"Great news, guys. Just got the competition bracket for sectionals, and we are in really good shape. There's only two other teams. We beat them, we make it to regionals."
"Uh, who are the others teams?" Rachel asked impatiently.
"Drum roll Finn."
The boy did as he was told, while Mr. Schue opened the paper in his hands and the students waited expectantly their opponents names, "School for the deaf in Dayton, and some Jane Addams Academy."
"Jane Addams? That's a halfway house for girls just getting out of juvie." Mercedes laughed. A lot of them felt relieved at that moment, thinking how easy will be to win.
"Th-th-this is great!" Tina said excited.
"People who can't hear what they're singing and criminals who don't care. It's gonna be a cakewalk. High fi..." Artie agreed with his girlfriend and turned to Brittany to high-five her, but she was giving one to Santana instead. Amelia laughed at that, but ended up giving him the high-five.
•••••
KNOWING who the competition was, the New Directions stopped putting effort and Mr. Schuester notice it. So, after some days of laziness, he decided to make them take it seriously again, and he already had a plan. The glee members were in the choir room standing front of the white board as the teacher pinned six pictures in it.
"Competition. Every one of these people or elements was a champion in their own right. But they used competing with each other to make themselves even better." He started the lesson.
"I don't understand how lightning is in competition with an above-ground swimming pool." Kurt said, looking very confused about those pictures.
"Conductivity. The lightning strikes and both water and metal conduct the electricity." Amelia explained from her place, with her head on Mike's shoulder.
"Exactly. You guys have become complacent. You were great at the invitational, but you got to up your game if you want to get through sectionals. Okay, split up. Guys on the left side, girls on the right side." When he saw that none of them moved he insisted again, "Let's go, come on. All right."
Amelia groaned when Mike squeezed her waist, and reluctantly lifted her head to quickly lean on Santana's shoulder. At the same time, Kurt moved to the girls side but was stopped by Mr Schue. Amelia frowned when she saw the face of the boy fell as he walked to be by Mateo's side, there isn't anything wrong with him wanting to be with them. But before she could said something, the adult kept explaining the assignment.
"Here's the deal. Two teams. Boys vs girls. One week from today, you will each perform a mash-up of your choice."
"What's a mash-up?" Puck questioned.
"A mash-up is when you take two songs and mash them together to make an even richer explosion of musical expression." Will explained, "Boys will perform on Tuesday, girls the next day. I want you guys to go all out. Costumes, choreography. Whoever wins the competiton gets to choose the number that we do for sectionals."
As they were getting excited with it, Rachel pointed the problem with it. "Wait, who's going to be the judge? Your gender makes you biased."
"Ah...there's going be a celebrity judge." He hadn't thought about that, so he said the first lie that came to his head.
"Wh-who?"
"Oh, you're going to have to show up to find out."
"I'm pretty sure is Miss Pillsbury." Amy whispered to her friend, making the other latina laugh.
"We got this in the bag." Mercedes said, all of the girls walking together out of the room.
"Totally. I'm going to start storyboarding our choreograohy tonight." Rachel eagerly said, causing Amelia to raise a brow to her. Since when she knows anything about dance?
When the girls started to split their own ways, Amelia skipped to join Quinn at her side.
"Hey Q, how've you been?"
"I'm great actually, never been better." The blonde sarcastically replied, "Sorry, my mood has been crazy lately." She apologized after seeing her friend's face.
"Don't worry I get it. You know yo can ask me for help with anything right? I can see if Sue can give more tricks to me instead, or even do your homework." Amelia knew that Quinn was trying to enjoy as much as she could cause even if she didn't want to admitted out loud, she knew that her situation will be out soon and then every person at the school will know, meaning that her whole social life will end. That's why the girl was overworking herself.
"Thanks Ames. I'm really glad to have you by my side, but I'm good for now." Quinn said smiling at her, but it was obviously a tired and forced one.
"Okay, just remember that I'm here. Whenever you need." Giving her a quick hug, the latina walked to her next class. She had already offered the same to Finn who, unlike his girlfriend, had accepted it, delighted that someone could do his homework for him.
••••
THE glee girls had accorded to meet at the dance studio, and now they were all there except Rachel. Amelia was doing Santana's eyebrows and laughing at her complaints. When the brunette entered the room she saw all of them doing anything but working on the mash-up.
"Okay girls we need to get started."
"We're getting warmed up." Santana dismissed her while Amelia continued pluckin her eyebrows, Brittany was beside them stretching her legs.
"Where's Quinn?" Rachel noticed the absence of the pregnant girl.
"Probably down at the mall looking for elastic-waist pants." Brittany joked getting giggles from all the girls, except Rachel and Amelia.
"C'mon guys, she's our friend." The latina scolded her friends, they rolled their eyes but kept quiet anyway. She knew that her friend was exhausted, so she didn't find it surprising that Quinn started skipping rehearsals.
"Mr. Schuester's right, you guys. We can't get complacent." Rachel insisted.
Mercedes sighed and lift her eyes from Tina's nails, "Chill out. I already picked the song. We're gonna do a mash-up oh "Halo" and"Walking on sunshine."
"Yeah. That was my idea." Rachel replied, getting annoyed by her lazy teammates.
"Whatever. Come on, we can do this in our sleep. You think those seven dudes are gonna give us any competition? I say we just wing it." Mercedes said full of confidence.
"We can't just wing it." Rachel frowns.
"All those in favour of winging it?" Mercedes asked, no one was really paying attention, so there wasn't any hands up. Amelia thought that they shouldn't wing the thing, but as she wasn't gonna give the girl the satisfaction of being right, she kept her mouth shut. "All those opposed?" Only Rachel raised her hand, "Looks like the ayes have it." With that she shakes her head and leave the room.
The others just kept doing their own thing without even mind about the competition, thinking they didn't have to try too hard to beat the boys.
••
When the "rehearsal" ended Amelia said goodbye to Santana and Brittany and started to walked towards her car. As she was singing a song she had heard on the radio, she saw her brother and friend by the car talking animatedly and moving from side to side. Once she was at their front, their smiles got even bigger.
"Uh, what is wrong with you two?"
"Nothing." Finn replied.
"We are just happy to see our favourite girl." Teo tells her, making her laugh in response.
"Please, don't lie to me. I know that your favourite girl is Quinn." She joked.
"Anyway, we were waiting for you to go home."
"Yeah, we'll go walking." This time Amelia laughed louder, until she saw the determination on their faces.
"Oh no, no way. Since when you two are eager to walk?"
"C'mon. It's a wonderful day, the sky is blue, the flowers are colourfull. Don't you feel the beauty of nature?" Finn asked taking her by the shoulders, Mateo nodding fervently beside him.
"Well if you want it so badly then go ahead, but I'm not gonna leave my beautiful car here. I guess I'll see you guys at home." Amelia sent them an odd look and watched how they both began to excitedly walk away, with an atypical energy in them.
There was definitely something wrong.
•••••
TUESDAY had come and the girls were waiting in the choir room for the boys' performance. Mr. Schuester and Ms. Pillsbury, the "celebrity" judge, were sat at a table ready to watch their students. As soon as they saw her, Amelia and Santana rolled their eyes at the obvious idea of their teacher, but they didn't have time to make a comment because the music started to play.
Confessions/It's my life.
Sung by the glee boys.
As their mash-up advanced, Amelia felt the fear raise inside her. Though she wasn't sure if it was because of their chance to win the competiton being crushed by the energetic boys, or the looks on their faces. Now she knew that something was wrong with all of them. However, she laughed when Teo and Mike started to do a weird dance at the front, and cheered loudly for them.
"Awesome guys. Geez, I didn't know you had it in you. It's like somebody slipped something in your juice boxes." Will aplauded them, glad that his plan was working. "You ladies better bring it tomorrow. Otherwise, we've got our opening number for sectionals." He said, making the girls regret about their decision, and the boys jump overly excited. Amelia's fear increased when her brother and best friend started to approach her, ready to squeeze the girl in a hug.
••••
TO SAY that Rachel Berry was furious wasn't enough.
She called an emergency meeting in the choir room the same day, ready to yell at her teammates.
"I told you guys."
"We know. You've been berating us for the better part of an hour." Santana said, as everybody else, annoyed to know that the girl was right.
"Yeah, you're giving me a headache. Stop." Amelia angrily said, but she wasn't exaggerating. The voice of Rachel was starting to hurt her, so she just laid her head on Santana's shoulder.
"Were they really that good?" Quinn asked, finally attending a meeting after days.
"They were, Quinn. Look, I was fine with arranging, choreographing and directing this number free of charge. But we underestimated the boys. Their number will go to sectionals and once again, I will be humilliated." Rachel complained, earning roll of the eyes from the rest, of course she had to make it about herself.
"How were we supposed to know they'd rock the house? They've never been good." Mercedes replied trying to defend her idea of wing it.
"How did they d-d-do it?" Tina asked, knowing that they were missing something.
"The real question is 'what were they on?'," Kurt entered the room. "Though I've been grouped with the boys, my allegiance still remains with you ladies. They declined my offer to do their hair in cornrows and all my artistic decisions have been derided as too costly because they involve several varieties of exotic birds feathers. We all took something." He explained them, making Amelia sigh. Great, my little brother is on drugs.
••
Amelia was looking for Mateo to talk. If their mother found out that he was doing drugs and she wasn't doing anything about it, Marissa would kill them both. She found him at his locker, a little more calmed than the days before.
"Really Teo? Now you're on drugs?"
"What?" He asked, surprised that she would accuse him of something like that.
"I know you all took something for the number. How could you do it?" He sighed and closed his locker to walk away. Hearing her sister yell at him in the middle of the hallway wasn't his favourite thing. "Do you have any idea of how mom and dad will feel if they find out?" She continued.
"Ames! You are overreacting, again. It wasn't a drug, it was a vitamin, the nurse gave it to Finn." He tiredly replied, relaxing his sister a little bit.
"...so, no drugs?"
"No. The only bad thing here is that you are gonna lose, because our number was awesome." And he had to screw it.
"Ha ha. Winning by cheating isn't winning." It was obvious she was worried about their chances.
"The only reason why you are this mad it's because you know you can't compete against us." He smirked.
"Oh please, our mash-up it's gonna be awesome." She lied.
"Still, it's not gonna be good enough. We are gonna win, you are gonna lose. Deal with it." He cockily said and Amelia gasped.
"In your dreams. And stop being so disrespectful, pendejo, I'm older than you." He blew her a kiss and started to walk away, which she replied with a false smile.
•••••
BEFORE glee club, all the girls were at the nurse's office. Rachel had decided to do the same the boys did, take the vitamin d. Terri Schuester, the wife of their teacher, was handing them the pill since they already had a cup of water in hands.
"Everyone gets a dose. Oh, except for you Quinn. You get acid folic momma, it's good for the baby." She whispered the last thing to the blonde cheerleader. "Get the lead, Howard. We have patients waiting."
"Are you sure we should be doing this?" Rachel asked.
"They started it. Besides, you were the one who asked us to come here." Amelia reminded her.
"Oh, it's over-the-counter, it's safe You can trust me, I'm a nurse. It's good for you." Mrs. Schuester assured them.
Once they took the pill, the girls went to the bathroom and changed for their number. The effect of the vitamin had already made effect on them, it was like if they couldn't stop moving and smiling. At the choir room, Rachel turned to Mr. Schue and Ms. Pillsbury to start presenting them.
"Thank you so much. It's really a pleasure. While the boys chose a selection of songs that cast an eye inward on the irresponsible life choices and sexual hunger of today's modern teens, we've chosen a selection of songs that speaks to the nation as a whole during these troubling times filled with economic uncertainty and unbridled social woe. Because if there's two thing America needs right now, that is sunshine and optimism. Also angels." She said almost in one breath. "Okay." She puts on position and the music started.
Halo/Walking on sunshine.
Sung by the glee girls.
When the girls finish the number they were almost out of breath. As everyone applauded them, Mr. Schue stood in front of them.
"Ladies, I-I don't even know what to say. You did such a good job!" He high-five each one of them."I don't know what you guys did, but whatever it was, keep doing it. Our celebrity judge has her work cut out for her."
The bell rang and all the girls excitedly leave the room. Amelia squeeze Santana in a big hug, and withouth thinking it, she gave the girl a quick kiss in the corner of her mouth. They were so excited that they didn't mind if somebody saw it. Luckily for them, nobody did.
••
After getting her clothes changed Amelia still feel the rush inside of her, so she directed herself to the auditorium to waste her energy.
Once she finished the dance, she heard applause coming from one side of the auditorium and then Mike walked on the stage.
"I knew you could dance, but that?" He whistle, "You are really talent Lia."
"Thanks, so are you." She smiled shyly at him, her cheeks red. "I don't want to sound rude but, what are you doing here?"
"I was looking for you. I was wondering why you were so energetic back at the choir room, but after that dance I think I know the answer...cheater." He accused.
"Me? A cheater?" She put a hand on her chest, trying to look offended. "You were the one who started to cheat first. It wouldn't be fair for us if we let it pass."
"Oh, so you're saying that we were so good you felt threatened by us?" He raised an eyebrow, walking closer to her.
"I said that, since you cheated by taking a pill, we were forced to do the same to be leveled." She replied. The mocking tone in both being evident.
"Whatever, cheater. Are you up for a coffee? Matt and I were about to go to the Lima Beans, pretty sure that your brother, Brittany and Santana are going too." Mike invited her, and if she weren't too busy drinking of her water, she would have saw the nervousness in the boy.
"Sure! Lets go." And with their arms looped they walked to her car, laughing at Mike's jokes about the vitamin d.
•••••
IT turns out that the famous "vitamin d" wasn't as safe as Ms. Schuester said, it was an ingredient used to manufacture methamphetamines and Howard Bamboo got arrested for buying so many. After hearing those news, the Romero brothers decided to not tell any of it to their parents, for their own good. Now the glee club have a very disappointed Will Schuester standing in front of them.
"We're really sorry Mr. Schue." Finn started the apology.
"We didn't mean to get you into trouble." Rachel continued.
"I'm really disappointed in you guys. Glee is supposed to be about what's inside your heart, not what's coursing through your veins." He scolded them.
"We know. And I think I speak for everyone when I say that we'd be happy to move forward and put this episode behind us." Rachel tried to reason with the teacher, getting nods from the other members.
"Well, it's not that simple. Because of this debacle, it's been decided that I'm no longer fit to run glee club myself. We've been assigned a co-director." Mr. Schuester explained, hating having to go through this.
And when Coach Sylvester entered the room, they all knew it was gonna be a hell-living.
WOW THIS WAS A VERY LONG CHAPTER.
