20 | One, Two, Three

Dayvon's left leg shook at a speed that quickened by the minute, matching the same pace that his heart raced at. He couldn't stay still to save his life. He tried pacing the hospital waiting room but that seemed to piss him off more than it calmed him down.

He was currently in the labor and delivery department of the hospital with Hazel, Aspen, and August, waiting to get an update on Autumn. They'd been here for over an hour already.

When they left the venue, everything appeared to be fine-granted that Autumn was literally in labor. She did the breathing exercises recommended by her doctor for a while, but by the time they arrived at the hospital, everything changed.

Autumn's blood pressure shot through the roof, her heart rate dropped and she experienced a brief seizure as soon as they walked through the doors. It all happened so quickly, neither of them saw it coming.

Dayvon was trying his hardest not to panic but it was quite the task since nobody was telling him anything. He'd been praying nonstop that Autumn and all three of the babies were fine. He hoped now more than ever that God was listening.

"Mr. Banks?" A feminine voice came from the entrance to the waiting room, and he wasted no time to stand up, as did Hazel and Aspen too.

"That's me. My girl ok?" He asked in a slight shuddering voice.

"We've stabilized her, she's alright, and all three babies are as well." She started off, and Dayvon ran both of his hands down his face in relief.

Dr. Davis waited until the family finished hugging one another to continue, not wanting to interrupt their moment. She'd been telling bad news all day, so it made her happy to finally share something good.

"She was in labor though? What happened? She had them?" Dayvon then asked; he couldn't deny that he'd be a bit upset if they hadn't allowed him to be in the room while she was giving birth. He wanted to be there with her.

"Yes, she's in labor. The middle stages though, so no, she has not given birth yet. The babies will need to be birthed by a cesarean section, asap. We have her prepped to do it within the hour but she's resting at the moment. The labor pains are strenuous and she needs a few minutes to recover."

"We've given her spinal anesthesia to make sure she can stay awake during her c-section and still allow it to be painless for her. She's in room 212. Please be calm and as quiet as you can so that we can keep her heart rate steady." Dr. Davis pointed down the hall, and they thanked her before heading in that direction.

Hazel and Aspen remained outside of the room while Dayvon went in first to make sure she was ok with them all being in there with her at once. They didn't want to overwhelm her, especially after what'd just happened.

When he walked inside, Autumn appeared to be sleeping against the mountain of pillows supporting her back. Then, he gently grabbed her hand and her eyes slowly fluttered open seconds later.

"Hey D. You okay?" Her voice seemed tired, and yet, she still made the effort to check on him.

"I'm good ma. You good? They wasn't fuckin' wit' you, was they? You need somethin'?" He rubbed her cheek as he stared down at her with a small frown.

"Mm mm. They don't want beef with you baby." She mumbled, causing his frown to drop, being replaced by a smile.

"You sleepy? The medicine kicking in?" He asked, noticing the way her eyes kept dazing backwards as if she was dozing off.

"Mhm. This shit damn near better than xans." She spoke truthfully, earning a hearty laugh from Dayvon since she sounded pretty serious.

When he went quiet and stayed quiet, Autumn turned her head in his direction to look up at him, only to see him staring back at her already. She could hardly read his expression but she knew just how worried he was.

She grabbed his hand from the bedside and placed it down on her stomach, coincidentally at the same time that her babies began to turn. Luckily, the anesthesia she was on made sure she felt nothing.

"I'm scared mama. I don't want nothin' to go wrong." He sadly admitted.

"We are fine. They ran a bunch of tests already and everything is good now." She assured, making him slowly nod his head in agreement.

"But-if something does happen and they ask you to choose between me or one of the babies, you better choose me." She pointed at him, and he laughed again.

"You already know I am ma. Ion even know them for real." He leaned over to kiss her forehead while identical smiles plastered across both of their faces.

"You okay with everybody coming in now?" He asked her.

"Mhm. Sit me up please." She grabbed the bedside rail, and Dayvon wrapped his arms around her torso to sit her up against the pillows. He gave her the cup of ice that she was reaching for, and then he went to go open the door.

August ran inside first, leaving his iPad in Hazel's lap without a care in the world. His whole face lit up at the sight of his mother who looked much better than she did an hour ago when foam was coming from her mouth.

"Hi mommy! Oh, I'm sorry." He lowered his voice to a whisper. "I didn't mean to yell 'cause the lady said we have to be quiet so the babies can be okay."

"You can talk regular stinky. It's alright." She chuckled, giving him a hug once her mom put August in the bed with her.

"Hey honey. You feeling better?" Hazel leaned over to hug her next, to which she returned as best as she could with mostly her whole body being numb.

"Yes. I didn't mean to scare y'all. She said I was seizing 'cause I gave myself a panic attack. The epidural got me chilling like a villain now." She hugged her brother lastly, then laughed when he called her corny.

"You almost gave bro ass one too. He was in there 'bouta swing on the lady at the front desk 'cause she couldn't tell him nothin'." He told her, referring to Dayvon, who only shrugged in response while Autumn shook her head.

"That lady fu as hell. She knew somethin'. She was just tryna play in my face." Dayvon stood on the right side of Autumn's bed, making her laugh again.

Before anyone could say anything else, there was a knock on the room door. When Autumn granted them permission inside, a team of nurses and Dr. Davis walked inside in full gear, letting them all know that it was time for her to give birth.

Aspen grabbed August from the bed, and he reluctantly let his mother go after kissing her cheek. He was a bit confused with everything that was going on but he was surprisingly taking it well. Dayvon reminded himself to get him something to show his appreciation.

"Ok mama, let me know if you can feel this." Dr. Davis rubbed down her stomach with the tip of a pen, and Autumn shook her head a few seconds later. Dr. Davis touched her chest, knees and ankles as well, and Autumn felt none of it.

Hazel, Aspen, and August moved towards the back of the room while Dayvon remained on the side of Autumn. Dr. Davis then lifted her hospital gown, and Dayvon looked down to see a catheter tube coming from her bladder, he assumed.

The nurses begin to talk to Autumn to let her know what was happening while they were doing it, but she tuned most of it out. She just intently watched and nodded her head when they required a response from her.

Excluding the panic attack that happened an hour ago, this birth was much calmer than when she had August. She wasn't in any pain and her mind was clearer than it was a few years ago, too. She was just living in the moment. Her heart was so full.

She looked over at Dayvon after he was handed a pair of scissors, seemingly in the same cloud of daze that Autumn was in. He felt his heart start to pump a bit quicker when he realized that Autumn's stomach was already cut open.

"First one, male." Dr. Davis lifted a chunky baby boy with a head full of hair into the air, and Autumn's eyes blurred from all of her tears as Dayvon cut the umbilical cord.

"She did it!" August whispered to Aspen after hearing his little brother's cries fill the room.

"She got two more to go neph. You ready to take care of all of 'em?" He asked, and August side-eyed him, making him laugh.

Dayvon pushed Autumn's wheelchair into the NICU, following behind a nurse that was leading them to their babies. Since they were almost two months premature, they would need to be in the neonatal intensive care unit to be closely monitored by the doctors.

They weren't sure how long they were going to be kept yet, but Autumn hoped it wasn't long. She was so ready to be home with them and show them their joint nursery. She and Dayvon worked hard on it.

"Look at their hair. Oh my god. All that heartburn was so worth it." Autumn wiped her face underneath her mask, staring down at her babies.

"My boy finna be locc'd up as soon as we get to take them home." Dayvon told her, quietly laughing when she mushed his head to the side.

"They so beautiful ma. You did that shit." He grabbed her hand, intertwining his fingers with hers.

He was so proud of her. He still couldn't process the fact that she'd carried three babies and gave birth to all three with little complications. Other than being born early, they were mostly healthy, according to the doctors.

They looked so cute in their little carts too, even with the tubes in their nose and bellies. On the front of the carts read all three of their names, and their weight and height as well.

Winter Destiny Banks, Sky Faith Banks, and Ash Nasir Banks; he took his father's middle name instead of an emotive middle name like August and Autumn's because despite Dayvon wanting all three of them to have the exact name pattern as Autumn's family, she wanted to let her little boy have a part of Dayvon's name, too.

Sky was bigger than both Winter and Ash by four ounces, but all three of them weighed less than four pounds. Still, they were the most perfect preemie babies that their parents had ever seen.

"Thank you pooh." Autumn kept her arms around Dayvon's neck after he'd picked her up, the two of them now back in her room so that she could use the restroom.

"Get out." She shooed him towards the door, holding the rail for support because she could hardly stand on her own.

"Shut up. Let me help you." He held her gown up for her, only for her to grab his wrists to stop him.

"Autumn I done seen blood before ma. Watch out." He said like it meant nothing to him, and Autumn tiredly smiled before doing as told.

He tucked the end of her gown into the neck hole so that it would keep itself out of the way, then he pulled down the mesh diaper she wore, making sure to be careful of her fresh cesarean incision mark.

"I love you so much, for real. I don't know what I would do without you." Autumn mumbled, loving the way that he took care of her. Most men would find all the blood from giving birth disgusting, but he was changing her diaper like it was something he did everyday.

"I love you. I got you ma. You know that." He laid a fresh pad into the middle of the new diaper before pulling it up her legs.

That she knew, for sure.
