CHAPTER SEVEN ✧・゚
▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅
THE ENTIRE ARENA WAS SILENT AFTER REAPERS FURIOUS CRIES FOR THE FALLEN, those still alive looking from their hiding places to see what was happening. Where it was safe inside the Academy, the mentors watched through the screen, skin crawling meeting Reapers cold stare that he looked up into the camera with.
Cassian bite down on his bottom lip to keep it from trembling out of emotion, stomach churning at that look Reaper was giving, a similar one that his (Y/N) did up into the camera also. He knew she was safe for now, but it still didn't ease his nerves at all not being able to see her.
His red coat was unbuttoned a bit from the top to let himself breath a bit better, hair messy from the amount of times hes ran his fingers through it. His ring was now on the end of his finger, from moving it around a lot in cause of his anxiety for (Y/N), and the games.
Coryo was also standing behind him closely leaving a hand on his elbow, sensing his unease through their twin bond, and felt the same way he was. Their matching blue eyes focus on the screen, watching as Reaper stood up gently carrying Dill's limp body in his arms.
Reaper started to place all the fallen tributes bodies in the middle of the broken arena, in a line from one another. He set Dill's body down carefully, giving one last sad look over her as he took off his hat to show his respect. Watching this from the vent, (E/C) eyes went wide seeing what the male was doing down below.
He continued to pick up the bodies and place them down gently onto the floor, making sure their arms were crossed over their chests, and weapons out of their hands to give them a peaceful rest. And when he finished with the last one, what he did next shocked everyone.
The Snow brothers head lifted up a bit more to squint their gazes on the screen, brows furrowed in alarm at what they were seeing. Reaper, without a care in the world, strolled over to the massive red Capitol flag hanging on the wall, and tugged it down in one go.
Collective gasps and shouts erupted in the Academy room in result, all the mentors standing up out of their chairs. Reaper walked back with the flag blowing behind him, it dragging along the floor. And he gently draped it over the dead bodies of his fellow tributes, hiding their figure from view.
That's just like her. Just like something (Y/N) would do. Cassian thought to himself with his thumb in his mouth, nervously biting down on the skin as his eyes flickered from his shocked brother beside him, to the male breaking the rules on the screen.
Reaper's back was faced away from the camera so they could't see his face, him staying silent for a few more seconds to pay respect to the fallen under the flag. That was until he slowly turned around, looking right up to the camera with a challenging expression.
"Are you gonna punish me, now?" He asked coldly spreading his arms to the side a little, his hat no longer on his head, as his voice rose when he repeated his question, "I said, are you going to punish me now-!"
Up in the vent near the rock pile in the middle, heavy breaths escaped (Y/N)'s parted lips, them being like that having seen and heared Reapers actions down below. She looked through the slits on the door, and spotted him still staring at the camera, something she recently did also to provoke the Capitol.
She knew the Capitol and all the important people inside sitting on their asses wouldn't be happy about this, and she was glad that was the case. They didn't have any right to stop Reaper from doing what he did, it was the least he could to for the ones who have fallen to the horrible games.
The only person she was actually worried about and feared for his safety in the Academy, was Cass. The one whom helped her from the very beginning. The one who she cares about so strongly it makes her heart squeeze each time she brushes over his initials on the bow she carries around her shoulders.
Distracted inside her own thoughts, she was knocked out of them when a startled yelping noise left her when a sharp weapon went through the vent door, almost getting her but she fell back into Lucy Gray's arms, the girl wide awake now hearing her sisters shout.
They both shared a frantic look with one another at the constant stabbing through the vent door, and (Y/N) gently shoved Lucy Gray down more into the small area they were in, "Go that way. I'll be right behind you." She whispered quickly, gaining a small unsure nod back.
When Lucy Gray started to crawl along the path into the vent more, (Y/N) shifted also with a silent curse to herself, and began to move on all fours. Inside was way too hot, her messed up sleeves sticking to her arms, loose bits of hair sticking to her sweaty face.
Her head snapped up a bit when she spotted Lucy Gray near the end of it, confusion over her features as to why her sister stopped. She crawled up the best she could beside her, and followed where Lucy Gray was pointing, breath hitching seeing Coral and Treech beneath them.
"Did you hear that?" The girls heard Treech whisper jabbing a finger up at the ceiling, "I think they are above us right now." He added smirking wickedly at Coral, who grunted back playing with her sharpened weapon.
"Good. That means the Mockingjay girl cant use her bow up there." Coral commented please in a lowered voice also, a gleeful smirk across her mouth sharing a look with Treech, who nodded in agreement.
(Y/N) scowled in offense hearing the words about her and her sister, hand reaching back to her boot to pull out the compact, being mindful of her weapon around her. She made sure Lucy Gray was back a bit, before opening it to pour the rest of the white powder out, hoping to catch Treech in the poison.
All of a sudden a trident stabbed through the vent as she did this, causing Lucy Gray to pull her sister to safety yelling out, and were both quick to crawl away from the open area. Coral laughed amused below, continuing to stab her trident through the vent, wanting the two dead and gone.
The sisters both scream a bit in alarm when the vent collapsed, taking them with it. (Y/N) took the heat of the fall as they landed onto the rough ground, holding Lucy Gray carefully in her arms. It didn't take long for Coral to see them, sneering seeing the two scrambling to get up, as they stumble into a ran together hand in hand.
"C'mon! C'mon-" The bow and arrow master shouted in encouragement to Lucy Gray, making sure she was running in front, as their hands let go for a second, for (Y/N) to slip a arrow into her bowstring, hearing Coral and another tribute running after them.
They all run back into the massive arena, giving the camera view of them, which had Cass's heart easing a bit getting a look at (Y/N)'s figure. But he knew what was coming, and he prayed, no begged his brothers idea about the snakes would save her, and Lucy Gray from death.
The four out in the open come to a harsh stop hearing something approaching up top, and froze when a huge drone appeared in the sky, a large container hanging from it. The wings to the drone caused a strong wing, that made (Y/N)'s hair fly back, and her eyes to squint feeling it, keeping a tight hold on Lucy Gray's arm now.
The drone placed the container down onto the ground in the middle, before flying away, leaving everyone staring at the new object wondering what was inside of it. Wovey suddenly appeared from off to the side, the young girl walking up to the container, "Is it over? Can we go home now?"
"Wovey." Reaper called to her still knelt beside all the fallen tributes on the floor, his hat in his lap as his eyes watch the girl who was now in danger, who ignored him, "Wovey, get away from there."
(Y/N)'s heart rate picked up seeing the young girl going to the unfamiliar container, going to take a step forward to save her as her bow was pointed downward for a second. But when she did, Lucy Gray instantly pulled her back, just as the glass broke from the container.
Millions of snakes began to pour out of the cylinder, and tacked poor Wovey to the ground, muffling her scream before she was taking out. Her (E/C) eyes go wide in horror at that, feeling herself getting pulled back by Lucy Gray, who picked up from the run to sprinting away from the snakes.
One of the tributes got caught in the snakes making her go down also, then Reaper who accepted his death without showing fear, his entire body getting covered by snakes, until his figure fell limp. Which left only three of them, now fighting for survival.
(Y/N) shot one of the snakes in the back to stop it from crawling up her sisters leg, hurriedly climbing up the pile of rocks again where Lucy Gray was calling her name in panic, reaching out a hand for her to grab. She did tightly once she was in distance, and saw Coral behind her, snakes already slithering around her body.
"It's not fair." Coral croaked out in a broken whisper, figure laying down helplessly on the rocks a few meters in front of the sisters, her eyes staying connected with (E/C) ones, "I can't have killed them all for nothing."
And that was the last thing she muttered before she squirmed trying to shake the snakes off of her, as she fell down into the pit of them, body going limp now that she was dead. This instantly had Lucy Gray turning to her expressionless sister, panic over her face.
"(Y/N), what does this mean now-" She tried to whisper in question shakily, moving herself to press her knee and hand onto the other girls figure, who continued to scoot them both back from the animals wanting to kill them.
Without answering the brown haired girl straight away, her (E/C) eyes scanned the arena to see if anyone was left, but it was just them two which meant Lucy Gray won. And so with a deep breath, she smiled confidently at her sister, "It means you won. That's what it means."
Lucy Gray's stomach churned uneasily seeing how her sister wasn't panicking, nor being effected by what was happening, However she saw right through the girl, by the way her fingers were trembling against the rock and bow, the opposite to what her expression was portraying.
The snakes continued to slither their way up to them, which caused (Y/N) to keep pushing her sister furthest away from them, and for Lucy Gray's mouth to open up, letting out her powerful voice in a song, hoping to calm the animals.
"You're heading for heaven.
The sweet old hereafter.
And I've got one foot in the door.
But before I can fly, I've loose ends
to tie up right here. In the hold therebefore."
Inside the Academy watching this currently happening, Cassian and Coriolanus both shared a determined look with one another, before Cass snapped his head back to the game master, ready to use his skills to save the woman he cared deeply about, along with her sister.
"Dr. Gaul. They've won." He called in a firm, but loud voice, catching her attention as she frowned not pleased hearing him suggest this, "It's over, let them out. There's no point having one victor when they are siblings. It will make people stop watching the games otherwise."
The game master didn't say anything in response but he knew that she was thinking, and processing his words, by the crease over her forehead. Once again, Cass knew how to play his cards, and use them when the time was right. Especially when he was most peoples favorites.
Back in the arena the snake now slitered up the girls legs, and arms, forcing (Y/N) to stay still and calm. She couldn't worry about Lucy Gray right now, even if she wanted to. First, she needed to deal with the snakes before they killed them both.
"I'll catch you up when I've emptied my cup.
When I've worn out my friends, when I've
burned out both ends.
When I've cried all my tears, when I've
conquered my fears right here.
In the old therebefore. When nothing
is left anymore."
The girls were sat on their knees together side by side on the rock pile, hands out watching the snakes slitter up their arms, but they didn't seem to want to hurt them, nor squeeze either. The animals were more so content, even more so on (Y/N)'s body, who's head was face down listening to Lucy Gray's signing.
"I'll bring the new when I've danced off my
shoes, when my body's closed down,
when my boat's run aground.
When I've tallied the score, and I'm flat on
the floor right here, in the old therebefore.
When nothing is left anymore."
As soon as Lucy Gray stopped she glanced over to (Y/N), who exhaled heavily through her nose feeling the snakes up near her neck a bit, and lifted her head up finally. If looks could kill, half of the people watching would of been dead. Her icy cold glare stares into the camera, lips bared up into a scowl going to sing next.
"When I'm pure like a dove. When
I've learned how to love.
Right here, in the old therebefore.
When nothing is left anymore."
Her voice, a haunting melody, wove through the air like a delicate wisp of smoke, lingering in the spaces between heartbeats of those who were watching. It sent pleasured chills down Cassian's spin hearing her singing, and heard a few people behind him sniffling also, her voice really having an effect on everyone, even the ruthless.
What came next really shocked the Capitol to its core however.
Not even bothered by the snakes hissing in her ears, or slithering all over her body, she breathed steadily and carefully lifted up the bowstring to beside her cheek. She felt the material brush against her cheek, pulling back the string staring dead into the camera, as the snakes were almost becoming apart of her, blending into the clothes she wore.
Cassian watched with his fingers gripping the material of his shirt where his fast pounding heart was, just as she let the arrow lose to send it flying through the air with a whistling noise. Everyone inside the room exclaimed in surprise, just as the arrow breaks some of the camera which destroyed the glass, leaving the screen in pieces.
Not one spoke any words after this stunt, too busy focused on (Y/N) who was smirking triumph pulling down the weapon, and mockingly bowed her head a bit with the snakes slowly getting off of her. Cassian felt another pleased sensation travel through him, before turning around to speak with the game master.
"Dr. Gaul, It's over. Let them, her out. Please-" Cassian was on the borderline of begging now, his voice sounding desperate as he gained the attention of Tigris, and Coryo beside him, both going to help their family member.
"Let them out!" Tigris and Coriolanus both yelled in sync after not hearing anyone agreeing with Cass, who's expression softened into a thankful one. His heart speed up even more when everyone else in the room started to chant what was said, fists pumping in the air.
Dr. Gaul's one good eye flickered back and forth between them all, before standing on Cassian last, "Who will watch the games if there's no victor? This could be an improvement that the games need One where it lets siblings win." He lied through his teeth, pleading with the older woman, accent becoming thicker.
She simply lifts up a gloved hand to signal for the others to stop chanting, which they did instantly seeing it. She turns to one of her game helpers, "Get them out." She orders lowly, before walking off making Flickerman laugh joyfully.
"They've won! (Y/N) Archeron, the Fireheart! Lucy Gray, the Songbird!" He announced into the microphone smiling widely, as he grabbed his show cards to scrunch them up, "The sisters have won the 10th annual Hunger Games!"
Everyone erupted into cheers hearing the news, all running down to the Snow brothers to congratulate them, and celebrate. But the only one who was doing so was Coriolanus in a daze a little bit, where was Cassian's attention was focused on (Y/N)'s face displayed on the cracked screen, and her alone. Nothing else mattered to him in that moment.
We did it, Fireheart. You did it.
