SONIA KASPBRAK had always been a controlling mother, especially when it came to her hypochondriac younger son, Eddie. Ripley, on the other hand, didn't have the fear of undiagnosed illnesses.
That is why when Sonia had to leave town for a few days and Eddie came down with a small cold, Sonia had called Ripley out of school to look after Eddie. She had a full day of lessons today and all of it was gone because her mother wouldn't let Eddie sleep in an empty house.
She wasn't mad at Eddie. She liked her brother's company and wouldn't mind looking after him if it were a holiday or a weekend - not on a day when her schedule was the busiest. Before she had left school, she had asked one of her friends to get her homework for her. Diana Tozier, her best friend, had agreed to grab everything she missed and would then give it to her younger brother, Richie, who was planning on visiting Eddie after school along with his other friends - Bill, Stan, Mike, Bev and Ben.
Ripley jingled her house keys into the lock until she heard the familiar click inside the door. She swung open the door and threw her backpack beside the cabinet and made her way upstairs. Ripley knocked on Eddie's door, pressing her ear against the door to hear him say 'come in'.
"Hey, Eds, how you feeling?" She entered the room to see her younger brother tucked tightly under a mountain of thick blankets. To be honest, he didn't look well at all. His skin was paler than usual, he had more pronounce bags under his eyes and his usually neat hair resembled a messy nest, signifying that he couldn't find the energy to style it.
Eddie smiled tiredly. "Not great, Rips."
"I can see that," she chuckled. "I'll go make you some soup and a cup of hot cocoa," Eddie nodded and attempted to climb out from under the blankets but Ripley pushed forward and pushed him back under. "No, mister, you stay in bed, you're sick."
Eddie furrowed his brow. "But mom doesn't like us eating in bed. It's messy."
"Mom's not here. What she doesn't know won't hurt her. Plus wouldn't you rather stay in your warm bed with a bowl of soup and a cup of hot cocoa, or downstairs where it's colder."
Eddie thought it over and nodded. "Point taken," Eddie smiled, snuggling back under his covers.
"Good. I'll be back in a sec," Ripley went to leave. "Oh, and also, your friends are coming over after school today with your work."
Eddie grinned with delight. "Really? All of them?" Ripley nodded. The younger Kaspbrak grinned further.
"I'll let them up and you lot can do what you want, when they come, yeah?" Ripley clarified.
Eddie nodded. "Thanks, Rips. You're the best."
The older Kaspbrak sibling smiled to herself. Neither would voice their love for each other often as they didn't hear it from their mother a lot, so Eddie saying that made her heart warm. "So are you, Eds."
