Odette finds herself far from Scotland, where she was born and raised, for the first time in her life after her father's passing.  At the request of her only living relative, her uncle, she journeys across the sea for a new life in France.  A life with guaranteed protection, given that her uncle is the captain of the Kings' Musketeers - a hard feat for an unmarried woman.  And Odette refuses to marry simply for protection. In fact, she'd be fine not marrying at all.  Men couldn't help but disappoint women and she was rather fine on her own, thank you very much.

Musketeer Athos has sworn away love after the woman he loved ruined his life. He traded in his comfortable life in the nobility for his sword in the Kings' Musketeers in hopes of never having a woman ruin his life again.

But Odette and Athos' paths cross when he is ordered to accompany her from Le Havre to Paris on her uncle's orders.  That should have been the extent of their relationship - acquaintances that greet each other with a cordial hello and a knowing smile. Nothing more.

But fate seems to have other plans for Odette and Athos. No matter how much they both protest.
