CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

✧✧✧✧✧

BON TEMPS WAS JUST AROUND THE CORNER. Homes sped by the window and Dakota leaned her head against it as the driver took them back home from the airport. Dallas was far behind them and the blonde hadn't said much to her cousin on the journey back. Jason, was oblivious of course, way too emerged in his own little world to even notice her mental absence.

It was two in the afternoon and she and Jason had flown back to Shreveport at ten thirty that morning. The flight wasn't long and she was glad to be back, seeing familiar surroundings

"This kind of reminds me of that bus ride back from All-State." said Jason, arm draped over the seats as he turned to Dakota. "Nothing looks exactly the way I left it. Know what I mean?"

Dakota didn't know what he meant, she'd barely left her home town before this trip. Besides, her mind was currently somewhere else. Dakota had left Eric in that hotel room the moment she had woken up, something she had regretted immensely, but the thought of having to face him after their moment she panicked and she booked it.

Though, there was nothing to be done about it now and she just hoped he wasn't too mad at her when they saw each other again. Dakota hadn't seen him or Godric again after that morning and she hoped they were al right.

"Not really," she muttered. "feels like there's something different with me though."

Dakota's eyes fell on the town sign as they entered Bon Temps and she furrowed her brows. It had been completely vandalised. She nudged Jason and he leaned her way to get a better look. The hair salon's alarm was going off, echoing through the empty streets. There was trash everywhere, as if a hurricane had come through.

"What the hell?" exclaimed Jason, having turned to look out his own window to see a man smashing his head against a pillar. "Look at this guy."

The further they entered Bon Temps, the more odd things they saw. An eldery woman came after another man screaming 'just pull your pants down!', while throwing objects at him. Two teens were fighting, one smashed a bottle against the other's head.

The car screeched to a halt when someone smashed into the windshield, breaking the window on impact. Dakota was glad she was wearing her seatbelt or she'd hit her head against the chair in front of her.

"They just ran right in front of me!" panicked the driver, turning to face them to see if they were all right.

Dakota rushed out the vehicle with Jason to the front of the car, taking in the damage. Blood dripped down their faces as the couple got up from the ground, grinning from ear to ear as if they hadn't just been ran over by a car. Jason and Dakota shared a glance as the man and woman turned to look at them.

The blonde raised her brows, seeing as their eyes were pitch black, whites and all. It looked like something out of a horror movie and she took a slight step back.

"Hey, what the hell is wrong with your eyes?" Jason demanded.

They didn't acknowledge them and wrapped themselves around each other, taking their leave, ignoring any injuries they might have.

"Wait, where are you going?" called Dakota, utterly confused.

"We gotta find Sam!" cheered the woman, turning to give her a quick glance before she pulled her top off, revealing a bright red bra. The man whistled and planted a wet kiss on her cheek as she did so.

"It's almost time, man!" he said, grabbing at her waist as they walked off.

"What the fuck is going on?" she muttered, glancing around the now once again empty streets. "I'm calling Sookie."

✧✧✧✧✧

THE YOUNGEST STACKHOUSE HAD WARNED THEM NOT TO GO TO GRAN'S HOUSE, BUT TO COME STRAIGHT TO BILL'S INSTEAD. Normally Dakota would question it, but with what they had seen upon arrival she decided against it. The driver had been kind enough to take them there, even with a broken windshield and then got the hell out of there.

Dakota didn't knock, she pushed the door open and there were footsteps running from the living room toward them. Sookie flew into her arms when she stepped inside the house, hugging her tightly.

"I'm so glad you're home! I was going to kill Eric if he hadn't had you home sooner. Did he hurt you in any way?" she rambled, eyes wide as she looked at her cousin, eyes falling to her brother as he closed the door behind himself. "Jason? Weren't you at church camp?"

"Yeah, about that." he grimaced, scratching the back of his head.

Bill entered the hallway, looking paler then usual but maybe that was because it was the middle of the day and he was supposed to be dead right now. He gave them a slight smile, probably feeling horrible this time of day.

"Glad to see you back in one piece." he nodded.

"Thanks," she smiled before turning to her cousin. "what the heck is going on all over town?"

"We'll, if it ain't the vamper and the vamp-lovers." Mrs. Fortenberry stood on the landing upstairs, staring the four of them down with her hands on her hips. Sookie let out an annoyed sigh. Her eyes were black too, like the midnight sky, but not in a good way.

"There are those fucking eyes again." uttered Jason, staring up at Maxine.

Mrs. Fortenberry cackled loudly, wanting to come down the stairs, making it down a few steps before getting stopped.

"Mother, come back here!" It was Hoyt, storming from the upstairs bedroom to go after his mother. Jessica rushed after him, looking as sickly pale as Bill did, but it didn't seem to bother her as much as it did her maker.

"She has gone totally batshit!" she cried, seeing them huddled downstairs.

"What on earth is going on?" Dakota demanded, having been gone only a few days to see Bon Temps gone to supernatural shit.

"At first I thought maybe it was just a bad reaction to her new diet pills," Hoyt tried to explain, guiding her down the stairs as much as he could. "but then we saw practically the whole town's got these eyes."

"How long has she been like this?" she asked, taking a step back when Maxine all but snarled at her.

"Since last night." explained Sookie, pulling a face.

"And I will be," said Maxine, giving the woman a nasty glare. "for as long as it takes for him to get his offering."

"That sounds fucking fucked up." exclaimed Jason.

Hoyt agreed with his best friend, shaking his head. "She's been going on about Sam Merlotte and how they're gonna offer him to god."

"Why don't you offer yourself up to me, Jason Stackhouse?" said Maxine, grinning at the eldest Stackhouse as she waltzed toward him. "You dirty little monkey." She latched herself onto hi, trying to give him a big smooch.

"Momma!" Hoyt cried, trying to pry her off of his friend.

"Does she ever calm down?" asked Dakota.

"Playing Wii gets her to focus." Jessica said from beside her, crossing her arms over her chest. "But I wouldn't call it calm."

Focus was one word for it and the six of them stood around the older woman as she screamed at the tv loudly, almost smacking her hand through the screen as she played some game Dakota didn't know.

"I'm gonna crack open your fucking skull, bitch!" she screeched.

Mrs. Fortenberry had been a pain in the ass before, but this was just top notch. The swearing, taking the lord's name in vain was not something she'd normally do. There was something seriously wrong with the woman.

"So," began Dakota. "she says god is coming?"

"Yes," nodded Bill, tearing his eyes from the tv to glance at her. "and everybody is waiting at Merlotte's so they can catch Sam and take him to Maryann's."

"Who's that?" asked Jason.

"Where is that?" added Dakota.

"It's our house," said Sookie, apparent frown on her face. "it is completely wrecked."

Dakota's heart sunk at the idea of their home being ransacked like the streets of the town had been. All their stuff was there, her grans stuff and she just hoped they hadn't messed it up too much. "How bad?"

Before Sookie could answer, Maxine piped in. "They're gonna rip that boy open and serve him up like a barbecue."

"Hoyt, has anyone been attacked by something with claws?" asked Dakota, remember the creature from the woods a week ago that had attacked her.

"Well, I heard Arlene say that there was a woman found at Merlotte's and that her back was scratched open pretty badly." said Hoyt, shrugging. "And I also heard somebody say that Daphne had some kind of weird scar on her back."

"The new waitress?"

"There's a new waitress at Merlotte's?" Jason's eyes widened and Dakota rolled her eyes. God, that boy only thought with his dick.

"We should talk to her." said Dakota.

"She's dead." stated Sookie, shaking her head in disappointment. "She had her heart cut out just like the other one."

"Have you ever heard of something like this before?" Dakota turned to Bill, who shook his head negative and she sighed. "Great, what now?"

"I am going to Merlotte's," stated Jason with a nod. "to find out what the hell is happening on my turf."

"Jason," began Bill, taking a step toward him. "if this is the same creature we think it might be you don't want to go anywhere near it. It almost killed Dakota last week."

"What?" he turned to face her. "You were attacked? You never told me that."

"It never came up," she shrugged. "besides, I am fine."

Jason glanced her over for a second, frown on his face. "I ain't about to sit back and let monsters destroy my town."

"It is dangerous." she shook her head.

"This is the war i've been training for." he said, determined to head to the bar and grill.

Dakota closed her eyes for a moment, sigh escaping from between her lips before she said, "You're not going alone, i'll come with."

Jason didn't object and nodded his head, already out the door and into the clearing before Bill's house. Sookie told her to be careful and then she went after her cousin, headed toward Merlotte's.
