seo kyungmi was born in seoul, south korea. she's the only child of (korean mother) bae eunseo and (korean father) seo kyungjin. the family moved to the uk when kumi was a baby for her fathers work, hence her english name (which she's not the biggest fan of). they lived in london until kumi was 11– all the while she was taking vocal and dancing (ballet & contemporary) classes because she wanted to be a performer. but eventually, just after kumi's 11th birthday, the family packed up and moved back to south korea.

it was her father that helped her make the decision to finally audition. at her schools annual talent show in korea, when kumi was 12, she fled from the stage mid performance after a girl who wasn't all too fond of her shouted some mean things from the crowd. her father managed to find her backstage and asked her why she ran away. she explained to him her doubts of not being good enough and her fears of failure, and he replied with a speech on how talented she was and that if she put her mind to it, she could accomplish anything she wanted— it shouldn't matter to her what others said or thought. and so, with her fathers words permanently etched into the back of her mind, she managed to win the talent show and later audition for his close friends company, bighit entertainment— who accepted her with open arms.

in 2013, she took her stage name of kumi and
became the 2nd main vocal of k-pop group, bts, which debuted on june 13th.

• the fear of not working— apart from disappointing people, nothing scares kumi more than the thought of retirement. she adores her job, as well as her members and their fans, and so she fears the day she will no longer have a passion for her work. this fear is what inspired her to write black swan— the song is incredibly meaningful to her.

• whenever kumi speaks in english, she has a really prominent british accent. even after spending so many years back in korea, her accent has managed to stick with her and is still just as thick as it was when she first moved. she is also known for teaching the rest of the members certain british slang and for being tortured by their awful impressions.

• kumi has an incredibly unique voice that elicits the most awe-struck of expressions. people (even vocal coaches and mentors alike) are very often impressed by her vocal range and control, as well as her ability to switch effortlessly between singing lower registers and higher registers. she is also often complimented on her vocal stability whilst dancing. kumi could be doing an incredibly hard dance and her vocals would still sound stunning—  people respect that.
