WORD OF THE WISE, when you ask your best friend to help change your hairstyle for the start of high school in a week, chances are, you'll find yourself like connor, staring at the mirror in disbelief with reina behind him doubled over in laughter.

"man, i look like fucking vector from despicable me!"

reina was on the verge of tears. she placed the straightener down onto the desk, trying to compose herself. "more like the o'hare guy from the lorax," she grinned. "c'mon, i say let it grow!"

connor flipped her off. "well i say let it die. seriously, there's no way i'm going into school with this wack ass will byers look."

she laughed and ruffled his hair. "alright stop whining mop head, go wash your hair and put in the curl cream i gave you."

he lightly swatted her hand away and went to the bathroom connected to his room. once reina heard the door shut and the shower turn on, she got out her phone.

AS SOON AS reina sent her reply, the bathroom door flew open, making her jump slightly and almost drop her phone.

she looked up to see connor with his damp curly hair, a small towel around his shoulders. he held up his phone and walked towards her with wide eyes.

"con, what the fuck!"

"you sent them a picture of me with straight hair?! shit, they're never gonna let me live it down!" he exclaimed, purposefully ignoring the part about reina making a move on him.

she stood up and grabbed his shoulders, stopping his pacing. it was nearing the end of summer, and surprisingly, he managed to grow the tiniest bit taller than her - it wasn't much, but considering the two were the same height up until this point, connor treated it as a big achievement.

"connor, relax, we've got so many other embarrassing pictures of them, it's fine! besides, you didn't look that bad with straight hair," she smiled, taking her hands off his shoulders.

"really?" he asked.

she nodded. "yeah, but i don't know why you wanted to change your hairstyle in the first place, dumbass. i like your curly hair the way it is."

connor smiled warmly. the whole reason he wanted to change his hairstyle was to try something different - something that would hopefully impress her. turns out, he didn't need to.

"i like your curly hair too, rei. always have."

it was a simple compliment, but it meant everything to her. growing up with people having a beauty preference for long straight hair, and mostly still do, it was, and still is, hard for her to accept her naturally curly hair.

with connor's help, she slowly started to embrace it, showing off her defined curls in many hairstyles she loved. bailey also helped her with her curl routine, which she was extremely thankful for.

"oh before i diffuse my hair," he paused, a sly grin on his face before he quickly shook his head side to side.

suddenly, she felt water droplets splatter all over her face. reina grimaced, immediately running past him towards the bathroom, where she knew he had spare towels for whenever she stayed over. her eyes were shut, but she managed to squint and find a towel.

"connor you'll be fucking bald after i'm done with you!"

"payback for sending that shitty pic of me in the groupchat!"
