Another month had passed since the meeting with the Cullens and Lilith's parents, and Lilith was anxiously counting down the days until the fifteenth of May. While she was excited to become a vampire and unchain herself from the possibility of becoming a dark witch, she was anxious about the part of actually turning. From what she had been told, the pain was excruciating, and she was never really that good with pain to be begin with; and while Edward had offered to be by her side the entire time, she was worried that her negative thoughts about the situation would put him off about being the one to change her.
Edward constantly promised that he was going to do it as that was their agreement—however, he was really taking his time in asking her again because he wanted to do it right this time. But, what she didn't know was that Edward had almost asked her to marry him six times since the last time he did. Though he could never actually get to the asking part as he was always interrupted by someone else or the timing just was definitely not right and that he felt it wasn't perfect enough for her.
While the first time he asked her wasn't exactly romantic, he had a second chance to make it completely perfect for her since he would only get to marry her once.
He had coordinated with Alice, Rosalie and Bella the best way to ask and to make it completely right since all he got from her was that she wouldn't mind what way to ask her and that anyway he did, it would be perfect to her.
"Please remind me why we're hiking today?" Lilith whined, out of breath from behind him as she tried to keep up with him as they trailed up the mountain, "I'm still tired from the last one we went on."
Edward turned to smirk at her before holding out his hand so she could hold onto it, which would ultimately keep them on the same pace, "It's a nice day outside, that's why."
"Well, it is Spring now." Lilith couldn't help but agree, "And we all know what that means..." She added on slyly.
Edward rolled his eyes jokingly, "Don't worry, I know your birthday is in five days." He said to her, the girl having been counting down the days since the start of the year and making sure to not forget to bring up how many days left there was until it was her birthday.
"Just wanted to make sure you remembered." She winked, causing him to chuckle.
"I couldn't forget your birthday even if I tried." He told her which made her blush. He could say the littlest thing and it would still make her blush like a tomato, and it was going to be one of the things he would miss seeing when she turned. But, he would prefer to see her safe and happy rather than her worst nightmare.
"Fine, I forgive you for making me walk." Lilith pouted, watching as Edward smiled and shake his head at her. Her eyebrows then furrowed as she noticed that they had walked passed the path that they normally took towards the field that they went to every time they went hiking and how Edward didn't make a move to turn back towards it, "Hey, are you purposely trying to make me walk more?" She questioned, pointing at the path that they were passing, "The path is back there."
"We're gonna go somewhere else today." Edward told her, "I'm feeling a little adventurous."
"Well, maybe you could feel a little bit more adventurous when I don't get tired easily." She suggested jokingly. She wasn't going to miss being out of breath and unfit after ten minutes of inclined walking as a vampire—in fact, that was one of the things she was looking forward to.
"Don't worry, I'll be a lot more when you do." He said in a suggestive tone with a wink, causing her jaw to drop and her cheeks to flush almost instantly at the innuendo.
The two hadn't talked much about sex, the thought of it making her fire up completely and almost shy away. It would be her first time, and she felt that if the opportunity were to arise, that she would be ready to lose it with Edward specifically.
The talked about it every now and again, barely hitting the surface; but, the two agreed that they wanted to be married first to make it all the more special, especially since there was a small danger factor because Edward was a vampire.
Lilith was happy to wait until after the change if she had to and if it made him more comfortable and less afraid to hurt her than it possibly could.
"So, where are we going then?" Lilith asked, trying to change the subject before she became a complete tomato at the thought of them having sex—and Edward seeing her picture it which would make it much more embarrassing.
"Do you remember when I first showed you what I was?" Edward counter asked her as he helped her over a fallen tree.
Lilith looked up at him quickly before back at the ground so she could see where she would have to step next so she didn't slip down the hill and drag Edward down with her, "Vividly." She answered him, remembering how dramatic he was being to try and scare her away, "I think we even walked past the tree that you threw back there."
Edward rolled his eyes at her teasing tone, "I was trying to scare you." She loved bringing that day up and how dramatic he was to tease him, which he secretly loved.
"I realised." She responded sarcastically, "And it didn't work."
"Clearly." Edward said back in a matching tone as he held up their hands that were still entwined and waved them in her face. The two had come so far from being strangers who shared a secret, to him only a few minutes away from proposing to her and spending the rest of their lives together, "But, anyway, we're going to the place above the cloud bank, I think it'd look really nice with this weather."
Lilith pouted as she thought about how much they would have to walk until they reached that spot and stopped walking, tugging on Edward's hand to make him stop also, "Carry me?" She pleaded, giving him the puppy dog eyes.
Edward couldn't help but awe at her and instantly scooped her up, causing her to let out a giggle from how fast it was, making him grin at her; the girl pressing a kiss to his lips, "Anything for you."
"I love you." She practically sang as she wrapped her hands around his neck, "If I had to walk, my legs would practically be jello by the tine we got there—and don't even think about making a sexual joke right now."
"Sorry, you just make it too easy." He chuckled and she scrunched her nose at him angrily, the vampire leaning in and kissing her nose, "You love me though."
"I do." Lilith smiled, "So much." She loved him and everything to do with him. She loved his smile, she loved his laugh, his silly jokes, his protectiveness, the way he held onto her like she was the most precious thing in the world, and most importantly, she loved how he loved her. Edward caught her thoughts and grinned, making him even more exited for what was to come and giving him more motivation to go ahead with it. His smile then turned into a cheeky one as he began to flash towards the highest point of the mountain, causing Lilith to squeal from shock and hide her face into his neck from the wind, "I take it back!" She screamed into his neck. Edward didn't respond verbally but laughed at her reaction, knowing she didn't mean it one bit.
He continued on towards the high point of the mountain. Alice and Rosalie had finished fixing it up a while ago but he wanted to spend extra time getting up there because he didn't want to give anything away to her by being in such a rush to reach the spot. Less than a few minutes later, he reached the top and Lilith's eyes were still closed into his neck, she was slightly scared that if she opened them he'd rush off again and she'd get whiplash, which made him laugh. It gave him the chance to set her down on her feet in front of their view before she would open her eyes cautiously.
Edward watched as the blonde witch opened one brown eye at a time before they completely widened in shock at the sight. The once dreary spot that had only the slightest amount of sunlight was now completely covered with white roses between the rocks and greenery that peaked out between them, along with candles that had been lit and placed elegantly around it all in front of the beautiful view of the town down below the mountain.
The witch carefully stepped over everything, trying not to squash the beautifully placed flowers, or kick over any candles as she made her way over towards the same large rock that Edward had stood on before showing himself to her. Lilith looked at her surroundings before turning to face Edward to make a comment on how stunning everything it looked, only to gasp as she saw him kneeling down on one knee in front of her holding a small black velvet box. She instantly placed a hand over her mouth to hold back the sob that threatened to come out.
She hadn't expected him to go all out with this, she didn't care how he asked her again—it could've just been after she had just woken up for all she cared—but, instead he wanted it to be extravagant.
"From the moment I set eyes on you, I knew you were different. I didn't know I had been waiting for so long for someone like you until you came into my life, and then it all just made sense." He started and Lilith quickly sniffles and wiped away the tear that fell from her eye, "Ever since, I've wanted to protect you and cherish you for every single moment after that; because you made me feel more complete, more alive, and you have shown me the true meaning of happiness. I am a better person by your side. I know we started off extremely rocky, and I have messed up in the past, and I have hurt you—" Edward paused and shook his head, scoffing how he stuffed up the speech, "Wait, sorry, I probably shouldn't be bringing that up in this." He quickly backtracked, realising it probably wasn't the best idea to bring up the horrible things he had done to her when asking her to marry him.
Lilith shook her head with a smile, there was nothing that he could bring up about the past that would ruin this moment to her, "No, no. Keep going, it's perfect." She assured him, "You're perfect."
Edward couldn't help but smile back after receiving the indication to keep going with his speech. He hadn't practiced what he would say too much considering he wanted to say something straight from the heart, but forgot that he would get nervous when the time actually came, but, kneeling in front of Lilith gave him exactly the motivation and inspiration that he needed to finish what he started, "You are the sweetest, most loving, compassionate and beautiful person I have ever known. You are the reason I smile, and the reason that I am still here today. You believed in me when no one else did—and when I didn't even believe in myself. You have shown me how to love with passion, purity, and unconditional acceptance. I'm not sure an eternal lifetime will even be enough to return all you have given me, but, I want to promise you that for the rest of our lives, I will spend it by your side forever trying to give back for the priceless moments and gifts you have given me." He finished and Lilith was letting out happy tears.
Lilith couldn't help it, everything Edward said to her just made her heart melt and it was lovely to hear his every thought about her for a change. While he regularly expressed his feelings for her, he was giving her insight into his mind with his speech since she never got to see how he was feeling in a moment. But now, she could tell that what he was saying was from the heart and was being improvised which made it feel even more special and perfect to her.
Edward finally opened up the box that held the large ring that reflected from the sun light, causing Lilith to let out another gasp, kneeing down in front of Edward and gently placing a hand over his while the other stayed in front of her mouth, covering it from how wide opened in shock it was from its beauty, "So, Lilith Bailey, will you marry me?" He finally asked, a nervous look on his face. Edward knew that Lilith loved him and wanted to marry him, but, even then, he was still nervous because on the chance that she would say no.
"Yes." Lilith sobbed, "Yes, yes, yes!" She exclaimed with an excited nod before launching herself into his arms and kissing him deeply. The vampire smiled into the kiss and wrapped his arms around her torso before standing up, lifting her body up with him which gave her the opportunity to wrap her legs around his waist to deepen the kiss, "I love you so much." Lilith expressed as she pulled away before leaning in again and kissing him once more, not wanting this moment and the happiness it brought with it to end.
"And I love you more." Edward said back in between kisses.
"Not possible." Lilith said breathlessly, continuing to kiss him as he set her back down onto her feet, him leaning down to keep kissing her also.
Edward took out the ring from the box before closing it and placing it back into his pocket and grabbing the blonde's fragile hand and gently placing the ring onto her ring finger, the girl inspecting its beauty by twinkling her finger and watching as the light reflected in the sunlight.
"It was my mother's ring." Edward told her, explaining why it seemed so different to most engagement rings that they would see nowadays. The ring was one of the only things he had left from his mother and she had told him before she died to give it to someone he loved unconditionally. He couldn't picture anyone else but Lilith wearing the ring, and he was so glad that the ring fit perfectly on her finger, along with suit her perfectly as well.
"It's perfect." She whispered as Edward hugged her from behind and pressed a kiss to her neck, "I love it, and I love you."
"I love you more." Edward told her, pressing her back closer against him, enjoying the moment.
"Best birthday gift ever." Lilith mumbled with complete bliss, her eyes closed and a smile on her face as she soaked up the sunlight that was beaming down onto her.
This was definitely making his top ten favourite moments in his life, that's for sure.
