The next few days, the vampires anxiously awaited the arrival of the Volturi. The more the snow stuck to the ground, the more real the situation felt to Lilith and the realisation that she could possibly not come back was settling in quickly. They had decided to make camp a couple of miles away from Forks—close to where the battlefield was going to be—to keep the battle as far away from the human eye as possible.
Lilith smiled as she listened to Diana giggle when Benjamin had lit the firewood that Jake had placed down onto the ground with his hands. "That's what I'm talking about." Jake smirked.
Diana had grown quite attached to the vampires that had joined them on their mission and she knew that her daughter was going to be a bit down when they all went home. Hopefully they felt the same towards Diana and would visit her in return also—Lilith also didn't mind having the extra family and friends around.
She then looked over towards Lorelei, who was standing beside her smirking to herself, "What are you smirking about over there?" Lilith nudged her gently, making sure to not be too rough with it as she held her daughter on her hip.
"Leah." She answered and Lilith raised an eyebrow as she wasn't expecting that response at all, looking over to see the female shapeshifter staring over at them. "She imprinted on me."
Lilith's eyes widened, "Then what are you doing over here?" Not only was it huge for Leah to have finally imprinted on someone; and the fact that she could actually imprint; it was huge for Lilith because she wanted her friend to be happy. Imprinting on someone meant that Leah could take the final step towards moving on from the Sam and Emily situation, and while she had moved on a long time ago, having her own person meant that there was no romantic connection towards her ex whatsoever which was all Leah ever wanted.
And Lilith was just so glad it was with someone like Lorelei; the two were so similar in personality and mindset that they would be able to understand and protect each other like no other. Leah needed someone like that, even if she wouldn't admit it, "Go over there." Lilith urged the witch, when she didn't budge, Lilith rolled her eyes, "Go!" She lightly tapped Lorelei's arm. She could tell that she was trying to play hard to get or so she didn't seem desperate, but there were times where she could see into the witch's mind and see how lonely she felt sometimes.
Having someone like Leah meant that Lorelei would never feel alone again because of how loyal the shapeshifter truly was. Lorelei let out a sigh and began to fix her hair a little bit before walking over towards Leah, Lilith looking at them with a smile when she saw a glimpse of their future together.
She then turned to her daughter and pinched at her cheeks, causing her to giggle and try to lightly slap her fingers away while Lilith hummed, "Aunt Leah and Lorelei are just so silly, aren't they, baby?" She teased while Diana nodded her head and let out a laugh in agreement, showing off her little baby teeth that had completely grown.
"This is what I like." Jake spoke as he sat down besides Tia and Benjamin, rubbing his hands together as he continued, "A little pre-battle bonfire. Telling war stories..." He then looked around to see the other vampires just standing around, "Or just standing there like frickin' statues." He added with a shake of his head.
Garrett then appeared besides them, "Name any American battle. I was there." He told Jake, using his elbow to lean onto his knee and point at them.
"Little Bighorn." Was the first battle that came to Jake's mind.
Garrett let out a smirk, "I came this close to biting Custer." He said, pinching his fingers together. "But the Indian's got him first."
Kate appeared on Garrett's lap, "Try Oleg's assault on Constantinople." She said while Garrett rubbed her arm. "He didn't win that one on his own." She smirked, thinking back on the good old days.
"If you're talking battles you're talking the Eleven Years' War." The Irish coven were next to sit on the tree logs that had purposely been broken down by the vampires to sit on. "No one does rebellion like the Irish."
"You lost the Eleven Years' War." Garrett reminded Liam.
"Aye. But it was one hell of a rebellion." Liam responded with a smirk, causing a chuckle out of the rest of them.
Soon enough, all of the vampires stood around the campfire telling stories of their times and the battles they fought in to pass the time or take out years of aggression out. Lilith felt Diana's head rest onto her shoulder, she looked down to see her eyes drooping, getting tired from being up so late.
She was usually asleep long before that time, but she wanted to stay up and listen to the stories even though she didn't understand much of what everyone was saying. She just liked listening to them talk with excitement and listen to their laughter.
"Are you tired, baby?" Lilith asked her, seeing her nod her head sleepily. "Okay, let's get you to sleep then." She decided, hiking her up further onto her hip as she carried her daughter towards their tent that Edward had set up for her earlier in the day.
She could hear Stefan and Vladimir talking next about their time when they were in the Volturi's position, feeling their sadness as they spoke about their past before it turned into anger at the idea of being able to finally get their revenge on the Volturi after 1,500 years of waiting. Lilith could understand their thirst to return the favour if they had come after her family and her home, she couldn't help but applaud their patience as she had no idea how they could have waited so long to be able to do so.
Not to mention after they had lost the life of a mate and a coven member. The pain that Stefan must have felt ever since would have been excruciating—she remembered how horrible it was being away from Edward when he broke up with her, but now that they were one in every single way, Lilith knew it would break her if he were to ever die. Stefan was most likely pushing through because of Vladimir and not wanting to leave him alone. Lilith would want to do the same now that she had Diana—even if it pained her to go every day without Edward. She could never leave Diana alone to fend for herself.
When she looked down at Diana, all she could ever think about was how much she loved her and wanted to protect her which was why she had to come to terms with the fact that they might have to let her go if she had a chance to survive.
Her ears then picked up on the sound of her husband speaking, her attention always going straight towards him whenever he was close by. "I can't help thinking, all these people are putting themselves in danger because I fell in love with a witch." He told Carlisle.
"You found your mate. You deserve to be happy." Carlisle assured him. "And they understand that."
Edward shook his head, "But, what what cost?" He questioned his father.
"Everyone here has something to fight for. I certainly do." Carlisle responded, immediately looking over at Esme, Rosalie, Jasper and Alice who were all standing close by towards each other by the fire while they listened to everyone speak.
Edward looked back towards the tent where his wife and daughter were laying, making eye contact with Lilith who winked at him while continuing to stroke Diana's hair to lull her. Edward smiled, "Carlisle, I've never thanked you for this extraordinary life."
Carlisle didn't say anything back but sent his son a smile back, placing a hand on his shoulder and giving it a reassuring squeeze. He didn't need to say anything back, he knew that Edward was grateful for everything Carlisle had done for him—even much so when he met Lilith.
Lilith pressed a kiss to her daughter's blonde hair, "You know I love you so much, right?" She asked Diana, feeling her nod her head as she cuddled closer towards Lilith. "Okay, good, because tomorrow I might have to ask you to go and stay with your Aunt Bella and Lorelei, and I need you to do that for me."
"And where will you and papa go?" She heard Diana murmur, practically seeing her green eyes tear up and her lip curl downwards.
"Papa and I are going to go... on a mission." The newborn told her daughter, trying to not make it sound as daunting as it could possibly be. "But, I promise you that you will be safe and that papa and I will make our way back to you."
Diana held up her tiny little pinky finger, having seen Lilith and Edward do it all the time and picked up the habit, "You promise?" She looked up at Lilith.
Lilith smiled and linked her pinky, "I promise. Now go to sleep, baby." Diana cuddled back into Lilith's chest and within minutes she was fast asleep, having already been exhausted from the day and from Lilith keeping her up that tiniest bit longer to have that small conversation with her.
She pulled out a small locket from her pocket and opened it up, smiling at the photo that it held of her and Edward on their wedding day before slipping it into Diana's jumper pocket. She was certain that she and Edward would get to Diana but with how long until that time came still up in the air, she wanted her daughter to have something to remember them by.
"I love you more than my own life." She whispered to her and pressed a kiss to her hair before letting her lay asleep on her. Even if Diana didn't hear her, Lilith just needed to have known she said it to her daughter in case she wouldn't have the chance again. Lilith heard the sound of leaves crunching and smelt her husband's scent nearing the tent, letting her know he was making his way over towards her and Diana after his conversation with Carlisle. Moments later, he poked his head inside before climbing in.
"How was your talk with Carlisle?" She asked him as he laid down beside her, taking a quick glance to see that Diana was still asleep and hadn't woken up from Edward or herself.
"It was good, baby. I felt like I had lifted a weight off of my chest." Edward admitted. He felt as if the last little bit that was holding him back from living a good eternal life with this family had been broken and he could move forward now that he had spoken through it with Carlisle. Edward had finally let go of the resentment towards Carlisle for turning him—he had let go of it the moment he met Lilith, even more so when he had his family—and he needed to let Carlisle know that.
He had no reason to resent him anymore for it because it brought him Lilith and Diana. Even if Carlisle knew through Edward's actions, Edward needed to tell him either way otherwise he would regret never telling him if things went the the way they didn't want it to. "That's good." She said softly.
"Are you okay?" Edward asked her this time and she nodded, "We're one day away from the rest of our lives and there's a lot to process."
"I just have to remember that all of this won't just be for nothing." Lilith told him. "In the end Diana will be safe which is what we want to happen, but, everything else is so up in the air that it makes me nervous."
"Then we hope for the best outcome to be our only outcome." He assured her. There was a moment of silence before he spoke again, "You know I love you, right?"
The newborn vampire turned her head to look up at him, almost offended that he would ask such a thing, "Of course I do, why wouldn't I?" They had been through so much together and he had stuck by her side through a lot, of course she knew he loved her.
"I just needed to make sure you knew, I wouldn't want anything to happen and regret knowing that I didn't say it." He told her and Lilith gave him a smile and leaned over to kiss him, "There aren't enough words in the universe to express how deeply I feel for you, but I'll start with I love you."
