It had been days since Emily left the Cullen home in a hurry and it had left Lilith quite worried. She had even attempted to try and contact the woman but not receiving an answer. Things were still going well health wise and the Cullens had decided to use this opportunity to try and manage to sneak out passed the border with the help of Sierra and Oliver to protect them so Carlisle and some of the others to be able to feed for when Lilith ultimately gave birth. They had let her know that they were going but only if she felt comfortable with it—which Lilith was completely fine with it. She had been feeling guilty about it for weeks since she noticed how starved they were, feeling worse whenever she had to drink from the blood bags in front of them.
Carlisle, Esme, Emmett, Sierra and Oliver had all left while the rest of the family stayed back with Lilith to watch over her while the others went out and she was quite happy with that bunch. She was trying to get Bella to get back with Jake on the side but the brunette was refusing to give in to somewhat distract her from the fear that she felt that something was going to go wrong.
"Okay, I've had enough of this." Rosalie stated as she stormed into the living room with her laptop in hand, "You're so close to giving birth and you haven't even decided on a name yet. Just thinking about it is giving me anxiety and it's not even my child."
Lilith laughed at her and shook her head, "I just figured that I would name her after she's born and pick whatever I felt suited her." She felt as if once she saw her child that she would immediately know what name would be perfect for them and just follow her gut.
"No, you're probably going to be high on pain meds from birth and accidentally going to name your child after the carpet; not happening. Plus you need to prepare yourself a little more if you have a boy." Rose insisted, making Lilith laugh harder. She was probably right anyway, "I've taken the liberty of making a list of the best names for children and their meanings over the last few years from several websites; and we're all gonna go through them and you're going to pick what you and Edward like best."
"Okay, I'll give." The witch placed her hands up in surrender before pushing herself up further onto the sofa to sit up straighter while Dakota moved out of the way and came back to nestle herself on Lilith's side before Rosalie handed her the sleek laptop. Her eyes squinting to adjust to the screen before widening at how many names there were listed, "Rose, that's a lot of names. You're gonna send me into early labour from stress."
"Please don't joke about that right now." Edward said from the doorway and Lilith tried to bite back a laugh before mumbling out an apology that he heard clear as day.
"We can cut it down by looking for specifics. Let's start with a boy's name since there's still a chance that she could be a he." Bella suggested. Bella was definitely rooting for it to be a boy for whatever reason—but she was going to be happy either way with whatever the baby ended up being.
Lilith didn't even look at the computer screen before smirking and looking up at Edward, "Well, in that case... what about Ryker?"
Edward rolled his eyes, "Funny." He commented before moving closer to his wife's side while both Rosalie and Bella stayed on her diagonal on the other.
Ryker was ecstatic about Lilith turn of health and was apparently looking forward to meeting her child once they were born—while Lilith was still hesitant in agreeing to it, she had to give him some gratitude that he helped her in his own strange way. She felt that naming her potential son after him was a tad bit too much for her and Edward, but she wouldn't let go of the opportunity to joke about it anyway.
"In all seriousness, I always thought Thomas and Mason were the cutest little boy names." Lilith thought, "And Mason could pay a little homage to your parents and you, which I think could be nice."
"Mason Thomas Cullen does sounds adorable." Edward agreed, "But, you don't have to ask me. Whatever you pick, I'll also like because you like it." He states and Lilith rolled her eyes at him. He wanted whatever she did because he felt that she was going through all of the pain and suffering of having to grow their child and eventually give birth to it; so he felt it would be fitting that Lilith were to be the one to name their child.
"Edward." Lilith whined, "I want you to be a part of this and I want you to tell me if you don't like names. It is your child also." With her pregnancy brain, she couldn't tell if names didn't actually sound good or if they flowed and she needed Edward to tell her, and she didn't want to take over and pick a name that he didn't like—especially since he would have to refer to their child by that name for the rest of their eternal lives.
"And I think Mason is the perfect name for him." He said, leaning over to kiss her, the witch humming as he did so and pouted when he pulled away.
"Well, that was easy." Rosalie commented sarcastically to Bella who chuckled at the blonde vampire in return. She then let out a squeal, "And now for the girl."
Lilith let out a puff of air before looking at the screen and scrolling down the list, "I think there's a lot more girl names than there were boy's." She noticed.
Rosalie waved a hand, "The girl name was more important."
"Well, we can cut out any name that sounds like she's a forty year old woman." Lilith joked as she tried to cull some of the names to make it easier to pick one singular name for her and deleting the names like 'Susan' and 'Karen'.
"And you can cut out that those ones right there." Edward pointed out as he pointed at 'Victoria', 'Maria', and 'Magda'.
Lilith nodded, "Good looking out." She complimented as she deleted them from the list, both of them not wanting to name their child after women that had caused their family grief.
"Maybe you should also cut out the names that'll make her sound like a stripper." Bella chimed in and Lilith let out a snort while getting rid of those selected names on the list as well. The human girl then looked at the list and made a face, "Huh, that got rid of majority of the list."
"I feel like I don't want to pick something that's so popular since we probably don't need another Sarah, Olivia or Jessica in the world." Lilith said as she got rid of the top most popular names from the list, "But, I don't want to give her a name so unique that she won't ever be able to find her name on a mug or something, and that people will never be able to pronounce it."
"Get rid of those ones then." Rose said pointing at the list of names that she believed Lilith would think were too unusual for her, "But, make sure to still take a look at some of the classics as well. They're never too popular."
"I think we should give her a strong name." Edward suggested, "Like something that has a strong meaning behind it like royalty, courage, warrior or strength."
"Dad is already thinking his child can walk on water." Bella teased while Rosalie showed Lilith the names that had the meanings that Edward was looking for.
Lilith continued to scroll through the list until her eyes caught a certain name, letting out a small gasp and scrolling back to it and awing at it, "That one is so cute!" She said pointing at the name.
"Diana is a feminine name derived from an Indo-European root word referring to the divine. It is the name of the Roman Goddess, Diana, the goddess of the moon and the hunt. It is also the name of Princess Diana, former Princess of Wales and humanitarian. In Persian, Diana means supplier of beneficence and wellness." Edward read the description that his wife was looking at our loud to everyone.
"It fits a lot of the description that what you wanted in her name." Lilith noticed as she placed her head on Edward's shoulder who pressed a kiss to it, "Almost completely if I'm being honest."
"Diana Cullen. I like it." Edward agreed along with Bella and Rosalie, "She already sounds like she's going to be perfect."
"Oh, believe me, with you two as parents—she will be." Bella acknowledged, "Are you going to give her a middle name like you would with Mason?"
Edward looked down at Lilith, "I practically chose what I would want her first name to be like; you can choose again this time."
Lilith rolled her eyes at him again, figuring that he would've pulled that somehow so she would choose the name so she could be happy with it first and foremost. "I'm going to be honest, I have been thinking about it." She admitted, "And it might sound weird but I wanted to name her after you two somehow." She said lazily pointing at Bella and Rosalie.
Both Bella and Rosalie looked at each other before looking at Lilith strangely, "And how were you going to do that?" Rosalie asked, biting back the smile that was beginning to form as she was indeed quite happy that Lilith thought of naming her child after her.
"And why?" Bella questioned, not thinking of herself to be so worthy that Lilith would name her child after her.
"Well, you two have been there for me through everything—you two are my sisters—and I wanted to acknowledge that. At first I was thinking of giving her two middle names but then I figured that might be a bit excessive." She explained, "And then I began to just mush and play with your names together how it would sound, and Rosabella was the one thing that kept coming up that I liked."
Edward grabbed the laptop and searched up the name that Lilith had brought up, "It means either 'beautiful rose' in Latin and 'noted protector' in German." He read.
"Diana Rosabella Cullen." Rosalie said the name out loud before grinning, "She sounds like royalty to me."
Jacob and Alice then walked into the room and Edward's head snapped over towards the wolf, "Did they get out okay?"
Jake nodded his head, "Yeah, they're fine." He answered him.
Bella then let out a squeal at her best friend, "Why don't you tell them what you've decided?"
Jake's expression turned slightly alarmed as he looked in between everyone in the room for an idea or a clue as to what Lilith could have decided, "What now?" He questioned.
"Just baby names." Lilith downplayed it, but even she couldn't stop the excited smile spreading across her face, "They love them."
"They're perfect." Bella narrowed her eyes at Lilith but her fake seriousness turned into a grin as she noticed the happy look on Lilith's face.
"Well, I'm sure they are." Jake nodded his head, "I'd love to hear them."
"If it's a boy, we decided on Mason Thomas Cullen." Lilith advised and she watched as Alice's eyes softened and she let out a small 'aw' at the name, "And for the girl, we picked Diana Rosabella Cullen."
"They definitely are perfect." Alice agreed while Jake also nodded his head in agreement, the pixie sized vampire skipping over towards the blonde and pulled her into a hug while Lilith continued to sit in her spot.
Lilith smiled as she was happy that everyone liked the names that she had picked before her nose scrunched when the familiar pressure feeling made itself known on her stomach area. She let out a sigh, "Edward, your child is pushing on my bladder area again, I gotta go."
Edward chuckled at her choice of words before helping his wife up from her spot on the sofa and onto her feet. She placed her hand over her the top of her stomach like she usually did while Edward bent down and picked up the styrofoam cup filled of blood that was resting on top of the coffee table, "You're going to want that." Edward told her as he handed the cup towards her. She always had it with her and always wanted it with her as the baby would make her crave it at the worst possible times, and would kick and move around in a fuss until she got it.
And Lilith wasn't going to take anymore chances without it as she had experienced the discomfort that was her child doing that when she was relieving herself once before.
"Thank you." She responded, taking the cup out of her husband's hands and went to take a step towards the bathroom before a sharp stabbing pain seared across her stomach, causing her to hiss loudly and double over in pain; the cup of blood slipping out of her hands and onto the carpet, spilling everywhere.
Her pain turned worse when she felt her back fling backwards, hearing it snap from the motion over the sounds of Lilith's screams—it seemed the moment was in slow motion for the vampires and they couldn't react fast enough as Lilith fell to her knees in pain, the two joints breaking as she hit the floor from how weak they were to begin with.
Edward rushed to place a hand behind Lilith's head before she fell, realising that this was the moment that they were definitely not prepared for.
Their baby was coming and both doctors were no where to be found.
Edward immediately grabbed his wife and rushed her to the makeshift hospital room that wasn't too far away, placing her on the bed while Lilith let out moans and sobs from the contractions in her stomach and her newly broken bones.
Edward recalled several things about medicine and surgery from his time with Carlisle, trying to do his best to help and trying to buy some time before Carlisle and Oliver got back to help out and do it properly, "Rosalie, pass the morphine." He ordered, pointing at the syringe that was placed on the try beside them.
Carlisle and Oliver had been preparing for this day for days now, so the entire hospital room had thankfully been set up for Lilith's labour with everything they needed ready to go. Rosalie grabbed the syringe before passing it to Edward, Lilith let out a gasp of pain, trying to look around while her vision faded in and out and from blurry to clear.
"Carlisle said the placenta must of detached." Alice informed as she held the phone close to her ear, Lilith not having realised she had even called her father-in-law. Edward took Lilith's moment of distraction with Alice to stick the syringe into the side of her stomach, causing her to grunt from the stabbing feeling, "He's coming as fast as he can, but..."
"We'll have to do it." Rosalie realised with wide eyes as she looked at her best friend on the operating table.
Her instincts took over and she reached for the scalpel, Edward quickly grabbing her wrist and stopping it from getting any closer towards Lilith's stomach, "Rose!" He exclaimed, "Let the morphine spread."
He could tell Lilith was already going to be in enough pain and he wanted the morphine to spread more so she wouldn't have to feel it as much.
"There's no time!" Rosalie snapped back, "She's dying!"
"Get her out now!" Lilith barked the order with gritted teeth, grabbing onto anything she could to try and squeeze onto it as if it was transferring the pain she was feeling to that. If she would have to experience the pain in order for her child to survive the birth, then she would do that. Morphine spreading throughout her body didn't even matter to her when it was her child's life on the line.
Rosalie brought the scalpel towards Lilith's stomach once again and Bella sprung to action and grabbed Lilith's face, "Lilith, look at me." She ordered, Lilith's brown eyes meeting her own before they closed while screaming out in pain when she felt Rosalie bring the knife across her stomach.
Her vision blinked in and out as she watched everyone flinch, when she finally opened her eyes she saw Rosalie holding the scalpel up in her hand with it both covered in blood while she inhaled the scent. She wasn't interested in the blood of a witch—but, she had been so starved that even Lilith's blood was appealing to her, "Rosalie, don't!" Edward shouted when he heard her thoughts and Jacob instantly tackled the blonde to the ground before she could attack Lilith, "Alice, get her out of here!"
Alice quickly went to her sister and grabbed her by the throat and dragged her out of the room while Lilith cried out to her, begging for her to stay even though she was slightly frightened by the animalistic look in the vampire's face.
"Ow!" Lilith shrieked from the searing pain in her body, letting the tears stream down her face and down her neck, constantly jolting her body around and not being able to control it without it causing even more pain.
"Change her!" Bella shouted at Edward while she attempted to hold down Lilith's arms, "You gotta change her!"
"I can't, not while she's still in there." Edward shook his head while Lilith continued to scream out, "I gotta get her out first."
"Where the hell are Carlisle and Oliver!?" Jacob shouted out to no one in particular, frustrates that their luck was so horrible that Lilith managed to go into labour when both doctors were no where to be found. He then went to her other side, standing parallel to Bella, "Stay focused, Lilith. Keep your heart beating."
Lilith let out another large and loud screech, feeling the pain in her stomach and her mind showing her the vision of what her child was experiencing, "She's suffocating!" She screeched and Edward immediately bent down and bit harshly into her stomach, causing her to shriek out once more when she felt the pain and heard the sounds of her bones breaking again.
Her vision turned red from the pain as she tried to look in between Bella, Jacob and Edward—watching as Edward wiped his mouth from the blood and bent down once more to bite again while Bella and Jacob held onto both of Lilith's hands, grunting from pain from how hard she was squeezing them but the two of them not complaining out of respect and worry for her health.
The pain was so severe that her ears were ringing and she was beginning to grow numb from it—she wasn't sure if the morphine had finally spread from all of the adrenaline or if her mind had purposely blocked the part where she could feel the pain, but she didn't mind, it was a moments rest.
She could still hear her own grunts and moans from pain and she could hear Edward speaking to himself as he seemed to be getting somewhere with getting their child out, and after once final grunt from an uncomfortable feeling, Lilith let out a gasp of relief before all they could hear were her pants.
She looked at the people in the room, seeing that Bella and Jacob were looking down towards Edward who had let out a quiet laugh as he lifted up the child who was covered in blood and mucus. Lilith let out a sigh of relief when the baby let out a cry, signalling that it was okay as she had read in her maternity books that a cry was a good thing when the baby was born, "Hey." Edward cooed to it before holding the baby towards his chest and looking at Lilith, "It's Diana."
Edward placed Diana on Lilith's chest, remembering that nurses and midwives always tried to get the baby on the mother's chest after birth for them as it was a way of stimulating part of the baby's brain, "You're beautiful." Lilith cried as she finally let go of Bella and Jacob's hands to caress her baby, "So beautiful."
Edward smiled at the moment before Lilith felt another small bone snap, causing her to groan and flinch. Diana began to cry and Edward gently lifted his daughter off of Lilith's chest and wrapped her in a blue cloth to try to calm her down. Lilith watched as Edward held onto their daughter so tenderly, looking at her in such admiration as if she was the most amazing creature he had ever seen and she would have the ability to bring even the toughest men to their knees.
Lilith felt the pain burning more than normal, she felt it spread and the world began to spin and fade, meaning her time was running out, a ghostly smile played on her lips as she wanted the last image she would ever see to be the most important people in her life.
She was prepared for the best day of her life to be her last. She was accepting of the fact that she would have to give up her life for her daughter's because she loved her too much to care about what would happen to her, as long as Diana got to live a life surrounded by people who would love and care for her endlessly.
Diana would be protected by the Cullens for the rest of their lives, and Lilith knew that she would be looking out for her from wherever she was going next.
Lilith had felt all the emotions around her as she watched Edward and Diana interact, she felt the exhaustion, and she felt the relief among the the overwhelming emotion of realisation that she had actually had a child that she and Edward could call their own.
Lilith had grown their daughter in her stomach for months, she had begun to identify herself as her mother; they had named her. She got to hold her at least once, and if her body couldn't of handled it all much longer; she would accept this be the end.
Because she got to have that small and gentle moment of everlasting happiness as a family with her husband and daughter before her life just simply... ended.
