DEAN SALVATORE WAS WORRIED. IT HAS BEEN A WHOLE MONTH SINCE HE LAST heard from maeve sloan. he has left her what feels like hundreds of messages, yet no response. so here he was, sitting at his kitchen table while his plate of spaghetti sat in front of him, untouched. lily salvatore who was getting ready to leave for her afternoon shift at the bank, had walked in and noticed her son, completely out of it and it wasn't the first time
lily let out a sigh, she places her bag on her kitchen island and walks over to sit by her sixteen year old son "honey" she speaks with such ease. her voice caused dean to be pulled from his thoughts, his eyes find hers "what's going on in that head of yours?" she asks
he shook his head "nothing. i-i uh, i have to go to damian's" he says, before going to stand, but his mother grips his hand
"dean, you know you can talk to me right?" lily spoke as she stopped her son from leaving
the sixteen year old glanced at his mother, lily held a worried look. he felt a punch to his gut, the last thing he wanted to do was have his mother worrying about him. she already has the worry of having to work shift after shift just to pay off their bills. he sighs before sitting back down in his seat. he shrugs "i'm just worried about a friend"
lily furrows her brows "which friend?" she wonders if it was about maeve
dean gave her a look to not push it "a friend" he assured "she hasn't--" he closed his eyes in frustration that he just gave away that it was about a girl. he could already picture his mother's raised brow and sly grin. he sighs before continuing "she hasn't responded to any of my messages, it's been like a month" he says as he runs a hand through his hair "i don't know what i did to make her want to distance herself from me. just before that we were hanging out and we planned to do all these things together"
lily tried to hide the smile threatening to spill, the thought of her baby boy experiencing his first love was special to her "well, i can't speak for her, but i know when i sixteen, i would have days where i just didn't want to text anyone. i would go through these hard times and i would just go incognito. maybe, your friend is going though something like that. i doubt that she would just leave you in the dust. plus, something serious must be going on for anyone to just leave my baby boy in the dark" she grins, hoping to somewhat bring up his mood
dean grins slightly, he considered maeve a close friend. they hung out plenty of times and she would always, always reply. maybe his mom was right, maybe she was going through something. but a big part of him wanted to be there for her if she was
back at seattle grace mercy west hospital, sixteen year old maeve sloan found herself seated at the edge of her father's hospital bed. it's been exactly thirty days since mark sloan entered his coma. and these past thirty days have been hell for maeve. not hearing her father's voice, his laugh, seeing him smile, it broke her. but she's also been stronger than ever. the last time maeve cried for this whole situation was when she heard richard webber call for a crash cart... that was thirty days ago
meredith grey, derek shepherd, callie torres, lexie grey, miranda bailey, richard webber, and basically all of the staff in the hospital felt for her. watching the sixteen year old never leave his side, if she did it would be to quickly go shower and come running back. watch her not get a blink of sleep, she only ever slept an hour-- at most five hours, that is when callie torres would force her too. worst of all, maeve sloan hardly wanted to eat. miranda, callie, derek, or meredith would have to come down and force her to eat, they wouldn't leave until she finished everything off her plate. it was all just heartbreaking to them
"hey maeve"
the sixteen year old had muted the world. all that was going on in her mind where flashbacks with her father, moments that were filled with happiness
"maeve"
a flashback that she always loved revisiting was when she was just five years old, her first day of kindergarten. she remembers the way mark sloan let go of his hard manly demeanor and let his tears roll down his cheeks as it was time to leave her in her classroom. she remember the words she told him "it's okay daddy, i'll be fine. don't cry"
"maeve"
the hand of miranda bailey, pulls her out of the trance. she turns to look at the surgeon "lexie asked if you could go be with her for her last leg therapy appointment"
the sixteen year old didn't want to leave his side, especially not today. this was the thirtieth day... it was the last day. the last day before mark sloan would be disconnected
"there is still time maeve" miranda spoke softly
maeve nods slowly "five p.m, right" she let out a soft forced chuckle. though she chuckled, a piece of her heart shattered at the thought of disconnecting her father
"mae--
"i'll head down in a minute" she cut her off before placing her hand on her father's "i'll be back" she says as a shaky breath slips
it was four thirty in the afternoon and dean salvatore found himself at the park with damian and nessa. dean had just passed the football to damian, when damian spoke up as he caught the ball "hey, there's madelyn and shawn"
at the mention of maeve's best friends, dean turns around to spot shawn sitting at a table with his guitar and madelyn skating on her skateboard. nessa chuckles "careful there lover boy, almost broke your neck"
damian chuckles, before speaking "they probably know where maeve has been, go ask them"
nessa fought the urge to roll her eyes "or you could leave them alone, and let maeve have her space. she clearly isn't responding for a reason" she argues as she plucks the flower petals from the flower she had in her hand
dean fought the urge to say something back at nessa, as the years passed, the more he disliked her. as he glances back at madelyn and shawn, he see's the two getting ready to leave. so instead of acknowledging nessa, he simply walks away from her and damian, and heads to maeve's friends "ugh, come on man" damian sighs "nes, come fetch the ball"
before shawn and madelyn could get far, dean managed to catch up "hey"
both teens turned around to see the blue eyed blond "oh, hey dean" madelyn smiles
"what's up man, good to see you" shawn replies
"nice to see y'all too" he greeted back, before getting right to the point "hey, have y'all heard from maeve?" he questions. yet he notices their smiles fade
madelyn looked to shawn, before looking back to dean "she's-um, she's been in the hospital"
at the mention of the hospital, dean's heart dropped "what? what happened to her?"
shawn instantly looked at madelyn, for not wording it correctly "what maddie meant to say was... maeve has been in the hospital because her dad was in a plane crash. he's been in a coma for the last month" shawn explains
"oh my god" dean whispers
"yeah, and sadly today if mark doesn't wake up from his coma... they'll disconnect him" madelyn added
dean didn't even know what to say. his heart went out to maeve and sofia. he only ever saw mark once, the day of callie's baby shower. mark kept glaring at dean the whole time. maeve always talked about her dad, especially how she missed him seeing as he worked a lot. he couldn't imagine how she felt "is she at seattle grace hospital?" he couldn't help to ask
both teens nodded "we're actually heading there now, you know to be there for her" madelyn looked over to shawn before continuing "do you wanna come with us?" madelyn offers
dean glances over to her "if you don't mind, yeah" he says with no hesitation

maeve sloan felt a unbearable chest pain as she starred out of the windows of the hallway. she also felt it hard to breath, her left hand wrapped itself around her waist as her right hand came up to her neck. she felt her body slowly start to tremble "maeve, richard is looking for you" miranda calls out. as maeve goes to turn around, she tries to cover up the panic attack that is arising "and so is shepherd and torres"
a shaky breath escapes maeve's lips, which miranda bailey catches "oh, okay" maeve forces out. she couldn't stop her body from trembling "i-i just - i just" she tries to calmly say, but it just keeps getting hard to breathe, her eyes filling up with tears "need a minute" those were the last words she could force out before she felt herself hyperventilate
a sob escapes her lips as the words "he's... d-dying" escape her lips as well "my d-dad is dying" she rushes out as her hands run through her hair in frustration "and i'm-- i'm falling apart" she sobs "i'm sorry"
miranda bailey quickly steps forwards and pulls her into the closest empty room. as they step in, she closes the door behind them "okay" she whispers, maeve turns around to face her, her body trembling "now, fall apart" dr. bailey instructs
maeve furrows her brows "what?" she questions
"yeah. cry. um, scream. punch the bed" she motions her fists "i-i'd give you something to break, but i don't have anything on me" a sigh leaving her lips "no matter how many times i've prayed for this not to happen... yes, your dad is dying, honey" tears well up in miranda's eyes
maeve's hands come up to her mouth to prevent the threatening sob "you and sofia are going to lost you father, and it's unfair. it's devastating, and you deserve to feel that. because everyone around you gets to fall apart. lexie, callie, derek, take your turn"
take your turn. maeve's body obey in a quick second, a sob left her lips "i don't want to lose my dad, bailey" tears rolling down her soft skin
sobs after sobs fell from her lips "i can't-- i can't do this life without him"
no matter how hard miranda bailey tried to fight back her tears, she couldn't. she walked over and embraced the sixteen year in a tight hug "i know it's hard, but trust me, i'm still praying and i hope god hears me. but no matter what happens today, you will not be alone, do you understand me?" she spoke through her tears "we will be by your side through all of it. through the very end"
miranda eventually gave maeve her space to pour out the trapped feelings she's been swallowing for the past month. now miranda sat in the lounge room crying. well that is before richard webber came to find her "bailey?"
"i'm fine" miranda quickly spoke as she wiped her tears with her tissue
"miranda" richard insist as he rounded the corner to see her
miranda bailey knew richard was going to keep insisting, so she gave in "it's maeve" she sniffed "she's only sixteen years old. sixteen! and she's already going though a grief of not only losing one parent, but two"
richard pulled a seat towards the couch she was sitting on "it's hard to lose a parent at any age. it's a specific pain, and it sticks with you for the rest of your life" richard sympathizes
"i just want to hold her and tell her everything's gonna be alright, but there's no words that can help heal what she's gone through and is going through"
as maeve sloan was watching jackson avery bid his goodbye to her father, she hears her name being called out. upon turning to her left, not only does she see her best friends, but she see's the boy that never fails to make her feel butterflies... dean
madelyn is the first to hug her "we came to be here for you" maeve couldn't reply without cry, so instead she just hugged her tighter. and madelyn knew that was her way of saying thank you. she then moved onto shawn, and then dean
as the two stood in front of each other, dean noticed the amount of tears in her eyes "come here" without hesitation, and within a second maeve sloan was in his arms
"thank you for being here" maeve forced out as she rested her head against his chest
"always" dean whispers for only her to hear
maeve heard someone clear their throat, she knew that was richard webber's way of saying it's time. as she pulls herself from dean's embrace, she wipes away her tears. he turns to see richard, derek, and callie waiting for her outside her father's room. she swallowed the huge lump in her throat, before being the first to step into the room
she stood on the right side of her father's hospital bed, callie standing next to her, and then derek standing beside callie. all while richard stood on the left side, prepared to recite his directions "after i stop his medication, i'm gonna extubate him"
there goes another piece of her heart shattering "okay, we're all doctors here. i've also witness mark discuss every step of this procedure with maeve. you don't need to say this" callie opposed
richard shook his head "i'm not saying it because you need to know the procedure. i say it because even if you think you're prepared for what's about to happen, you're not" he argued "your brain can't fully absorb what we're about to do. but by saying this... i'm giving you a little time to catch up"
all maeve could do was look down at her father, praying to the heaven above and to her mother to please please return her father to her
"so, after i stop his medications... i'm gonna extubate him. as indicated in his living will, dr. sloan asked that, if life - sustaining procedures would only prolong the moment of death, that these procedures be discontinued. dr. sloan asked that if he were unable to make his own medical decisions, that his directive be honored by his chosen proxy. his final request was that only comfort care be given to him in his final moments. once support is removed, he may only hold on for a few minutes"
few minutes... maeve felt her legs weaken, her body trembling. what kept her a feet, was her hand grabbing onto the side of her father's bed. callie's eyes instantly looking towards the sixteen year old, making sure she was okay
"or the process could take hours. i'm turning the ventilator off" richard announced. maeve could only look down, tears escaping her eyes as she shut them, wishing to wake up from this horrible dream. callie carefully pulled her to her side, letting the nurse take her spot to help remove the mouth tube "we've sedated him with morphine, so he's not feeling any of this"
a small wept left maeve's lips, as did callie. the mother intertwined her hand with the teens "i'll give you some privacy" richard announced as he exited the room with the nurse. derek walked over to the seat on the left side of the room, while callie pulled the one next to her so maeve could sit by mark's bedside. one of the nurses brought in another chair for callie to sit on. maeve wasn't ready for these next few minutes or hours

after some gruesome hours, the time came. mark sloan's heart rate was dropping. callie and derek both looked at each other, knowing it was time. meanwhile, maeve reached out to grab her father's hand, her head resting on near his elbow. outside of the icu room, the surgeons also heard the heart beat monitor lower. at their sudden glance towards the room, madelyn, shawn, and dean knew this was the moment maeve's life would change for the worse
maeve wasn't ready to say goodbye. mark sloan was more than just her father, he was her rock, her anchor. without him she knew she would sink and drown. but here she was preparing herself for hell on earth. she knew deep in her heart that mark sloan would never want to leave this world, especially if it meant leaving his greatest gifts in life. so, she had to at least give him some sort of comfort. so with tears rolling down her skin, she spoke softly, not caring if derek or callie were there "i know life without you is going to be the most hardest thing in the world. and i know that a big part of me is going to feel lost for a very very long time" she let out a shaky breath before continuing her next words "but i want you to know that it's okay daddy, i'll be fine. your little munchkin will be fine"
that was it, that's when maeve sloan heart finally shattered. the loud agonizing sound of the heart monitor flatlining. a sob escaped her lips as she gripped onto her father's hand "i love you so much" she whispers with tears just pouring out from her eyes
she felt derek pat her father's chest. not only did she lose someone, but both derek and callie lost their best friend
it was like if the world had stopped. one minute they were hearing the flatline, and suddenly the next they heard a heart beat start up again. maeve sloan felt as if her mind was playing a cruel trick on. her. so, her teary puffy green eyes snapped towards the heart beat monitor, a sigh of relief left her lips along with tears rolling down her cheek...there was a heart beat again
god heard their prayers
