MAEVE SLOAN THOUGHT HER FATHER MARK SLOAN WAS IN THE CLEAR AFTER THE accident. but it seems as if faith wasn't on her side... nor her father's side. mark sloan had entered in some sort of coma. one minute he was fine, talking to maeve about her starting eleventh grade and then the next maeve went to talk to lexie, only because mark begged her to. and when the sixteen year old was walking back to her father's room, the words spoken by richard webber made her heart stop, "crash cart"

โœˆ๏ธŽ ๐“œark sloan held a soft smile on his face as he watched his daughter go on and on about starting eleventh grade. he only hoped he would be there to witness all the joy to come "i have also thought about joining the cheerleading squad" the sixteen year old told her father as she was sat on the hospital bed beside him

maeve sloan watched as her father's eyes widen. she could already feel a storm of a lecture coming, but for some reason he held it back. he nodded instead and formed a smile "i already know, you're going to be the best cheerleader. heck, you'll even be the cheerleading captain" he meant ever word, she was a sloan

the sixteen year old couldn't help but to grin "i wouldn't go as far as to say cheerleading captain" she snickered

a small grin formed on mark's lips, but it soon faded when he felt the need to remind his daughter just how amazing she is. he shook his head slightly "don't doubt yourself, maeve" the sixteen year old furrows her brows at the mention of her name. usually, he would call her munchkin or honey

outside of his icu room, richard webber was explaining to the surgical intern, heather brooks about the surge. seeing as derek shepherd question webber: you think it's the surge? "in many terminally ill patients, they have a final surge of energy. they get better before they get worse"

"but this is not that" jackson avery assured

"but in a little while, he'll do what all patients do. he'll have epiphanies, he'll tell you what really matters in life, ask for his family--" the four surgeons turned to take a look at mark sloan talking with maeve... his family

"the man is telling dirty jokes. it's not a-- not a surge" derek cut him off

jackson laughs "no, i don't think so either" he added

richard slowly nodded, before speaking up "then i really hope he isn't in there telling maeve what really matters in life"

but little did the surgeons know, he was... "i want you to promise me something" mark told his daughter. he didn't give her a chance to speak, he continued "no matter what happens in life, always keep on fighting. there will be times when life knocks you down, whether its in school or in the outside world, but don't you dare give up. and like i told you a second ago, never doubt yourself. you understand me?" maeve was confused as why her father was talking about this, but nonetheless she nods "promise me" he says, wanting to hear her say it, so he could have a sense of peace

"i promise"

mark nodded and squeeze her hand "now, do me a favor and tell dr. avery to come in here. and go check on lexie" he instructed her

after his conversation with jackson avery and convincing him to go grab sofia, he leaned back into the hospital bed... completely exhausted. in that second, richard webber walked in with his hands crossed against his chest "is this what i think it is?" he asked, as he let out deep breathes

"there's no way to know" richard replied, knowing all too well the term they were taking about was the surge. he took a few steps forward, resting his hands against the end of the hospital bed "we'll... we'll just... take it as it comes. okay?"

"don't tell callie. she's about to operate on derek" mark said exhaustibly, while richard finished fixing on his nasal cannula

"okay" richard replied

"derek doesn't need to go in this surgery worried, so don't say anything to him" mark spoke up

as richard was lowering the head of the hospital bed "they can reschedule the surgery, mark. i'm sure they'd want to"

"no" the blue eyed man declined "that surgery's gonna get derek back into the o.r. where he belongs" richard sighs before pulling his chair closer to the bed "nobody's got better hands than him, except maybe callie. have you looked at her hands? they're beautiful. sofia has her hands" mark exhales "callie... really doesn't even know how good she is" he glanced over at richard webber "i wish my little girl could see how amazing she is. she's-- she's so talented, you should hear her sing. just pure talent, she for sure got that from me" with the strength he had left, he let out a snicker

"sometimes you wish people... would just see themselves the way you do" he continued "listen to me. this the surge talking?" he asked richard

the chief shook his head "no, this is you. this is all you. so keep going... 'cause i'm not going anywhere"

mark sloan was grateful that maeve was with lexie at her leg therapy, he didn't want her to see him like this "in the event that my heart stops beating and i stop breathing, i want to be resuscitated" richard read off from the living will

the chief turned his head to glance over at an exhausted mark sloan "well, don't go crazy, but... if you can get me back, yeah, get me back" the blue eyed replied

richard forced back the grin threatening to form "initial here" he instructed as he handed him the clipboard and pen. after being handed back, he continued reading "in the event that i am close to death and life support would only postpone that moment of my death, i, 'a' -- want to receive tube feeding, 'b' -- i want tube feeding only as my physician recommends, and 'c' ... i do not want tube feeding. initial one"

after mark chose, he handed the clipboard back to webber "this section specifies a time of withdrawal of care. life-sustaining care shall be withdrawn if signs of recovery are not seen after a period of..."

richard webber glanced over at mark sloan, awaiting his answer. the next two words, hurt mark to say "thirty days" and once more, mark was handed the clipboard

as he handed it back, he started getting flashbacks. the first memory he recalled was the day maeve carolyn sloan came into his life. the second memory was the day he witness her take her first steps. as he turned his body to the side, he felt it get harder to breathe. his eyes were fixated on richard webber, yet his mind was on his little girl, his munchkin, his person. he didn't find himself thinking of sofia as much as he found himself thinking of maeve. sofia had callie and arizona. but maeve? sure, derek and meredith would step up, seeing as their her godparents. but maeve sloan only had him left, she had just lost myleen a few months ago. he knew, if he went into the light... it would break her. so as he felt his eyelids and airway closing, he promised himself that he would continue fighting

he couldn't leave behind his person.

but as mark was now unconscious, he didn't get to hear the crushing sob that left maeve sloan's lips as richard webber called out for a crash cart
