After a few falls, from the two of them, they both made it to the mall—without having any broken bones. Marty placed his foot down on the ground to have the two skid to a stop by the mall sign that read, 'TWIN PINE MALL' along with a digital clock that read '1:18.' The two get off of the board before walking around, Marty holding the video camera while Darleen held his skateboard.
There was an oversized van with a ramp going down the back of it. It had lettering on the side reading, 'DR. E. BROWN ENTERPRISES-24 HOUR SCIENTIFIC SERVICE.' A large dog sits beside it, waiting patiently. The two walk over to the van and dog. "Doc, hello?" Marty calls out, Darleen had bent down and started to pet the dog, "Hi Einstein." Marty does the same, "Where's the Doc boy? Where's the Doc?"
An engine can be heard and the two stand up—a sleek, stainless steel DeLorean, drives down the ramp. It was modified here and there, but not to the point where it looked like junk. Marty stares in amazement as Darleen is just playing with Einstein at this point. The DeLorean drives up next to the two before the car door opens, having Doc—a 65 year old man—step out of it.
He wears a radiation suit, the hood off. "Good evening Ma-." He stops seeing Darleen, he quickly pulls Marty aside, "What is that girl doing here?" Marty stumbles over his words. "I, uh—she, well.." Doc sighs, he didn't hate Darleen—in fact he thought that she was a pretty good person, she was just unprofessional at times. Doc sighs, "Well, ahem, welcome to my latest experiment, the two of you." He says the last words a little louder so that Darleen can hear him.
She gets up, "Oh, hi Doc." Marty goes back to looking at the car. "It's a DeLorean, but what did you do to it?" Darleen looks Doc up and down, "And, what's with the Devo suit?" Doc ignores her question and instead grabs the two by their shoulders, "Bear with me you two, all of your questions will be answered. Roll tape.. and we'll proceed." Marty raises the camera and points it at Doc.
Darleen stands behind Marty while Doc clears his throat before addressing the camera. "Good evening, I'm Doctor Emmet Brown. I'm standing here at the parking lot of the Twin Pines mall. It's Saturday morning, October 26, 1985, 1:19 a.m., and this is temporal experiment number one." He looks at Einstein, "Come on Einstein. Get in, boy." The dog obeys what Doc says and jumps into the cars driver seat, Doc buckles him in.
Doc turns back around to the camera, "Please note that Einsteins' clock here is in precise synchronization with my control watch." He holds up his watch next to Einsteins' just to prove that the two clocks are in sync. "Good luck, Einie." Doc says to his dog. Darleen places her chin on Martys' shoulder, her hand going to his other shoulder as she watches closely. Marty looks at her out of the corner of his eye before going back to filming.
Doc starts the ignition and the engine roars to life, along with turning the headlights on. He shuts the door, sealing Einstein in. He steps back and grabs a remote control unit—similar to the ones for toy cars. Doc turns the controller on before having the car drive down the parking lot before turning towards them, "Here we go, if my calculations are correct, when the car hits 88 miles per hour, you're gonna see some serious shit." Doc takes a deep breath before pushing the accelerator button.
The DeLorean takes off and Darleen hides behind Marty. The car shifts gears, the L.E.D speedometer passes 30—passes 40, the three are all watching, it passes 60—passing 75, the car is approaching them now, it hits 85—86—87—88! The car is engulfed in a blinding white light. It's gone all of a sudden, a trail of fire left behind. The three are hit with a blast of wind, the two teens are just blinking in disbelief.
Only a license plate is left behind that reads 'NO TIME.' Doc has a wide smile, "What did I tell you? 88 miles per hour!" Doc checks his watch, talking to himself as Darleen furrows her brows before taking a step away from the two, "Christ almighty! You disintegrated Einstein!" Doc places his hand on her shoulder, "Calm down, Darleen. I didn't disintegrate anything. The molecular structure of Einstein and the car are intact." Marty looks at Doc, "Then where the hell are they?"
"The appropriate question is, when the hell are they. You see, Einstein has just become the worlds' first time traveller. I sent him into the future, one minute into the future to be exact. And at exactly 1:03 a.m. and zero seconds, we shall catch up to him—and the time machine." Marty puts his hand out, "Wait a minute Doc, Doc.. are you trying to tell me that you made a time machine out of a—out of a DeLorean?" Doc smiles, "Precisely!"
Darleen lets out an exasperated sigh, "Well, this is some heavy shit." Docs' watch beeps—he holds his hands up to Marty, "Ten seconds! Roll tape, brace yourselves for a sudden displacement of air." Marty aims the camera back to where the DeLorean disappeared. Doc grips the remote control tightly, "5... 4... 3... 2.... 1!" A sharp blast off wind hits them, Marty holds Darleen tightly to his side as she closes her eyes and faces the other way.
The DeLorean reappears, right where it had vanished, it was still going 88 mph. Doc presses the brake button resulting in the car screeching to a stop. Marty, Doc, and Darleen rush over to the car cautiously. Doc slowly reaches for the door handle before touching it, his hand recoils in pain. "Is it hot?" Marty asks. Doc shakes his head, "It's cold, damned cold."
Doc raises the driver side door and sees that Einstein is still sitting there, perfectly fine. Doc compares his watch with Einsteins'. "Exactly a one minute difference!" He says with a smile. "Is Einstein alright?" Darleen asks. Doc unbuckles Einstein and the dog comes out of the car, happy and playful. Doc gives him a treat, "Good boy, Einie. He's fine and he's completely unaware of what happened. As far as he's concerned, the trip was instantaneous."
Doc looks at the two teens, "Come here, lemme show you how it works." Darleen walks right over while Marty is still skeptical. Doc waves him over having Marty approach cautiously. "First, you turn on the time circuits. The readout tells you where you're going, this one tells you where you are, and this one tells you where you were." The three readouts are labeled, 'DESTINATION TIME,' 'PRESENT TIME,' and 'LAST TIME DEPARTED.'
"You input your destination time on this keypad. Want to see the signing of the Declaration Of Independent?" He punches in 7-4-1776, "Or witness the birth of Christ?" He punches in 12-25-0. "Here's a red letter date in the history of science! November 5, 1955." He pauses, realizing something, "Yes, of course—November 5... 1955." Marty tilts his head, "What happened then?"
