Childhood.
It was never something that Mei'lu intentionally though about. Oh eywa, it was something she wanted to forget.
She wanted to forget the harsh words coming from the ones who were supposed to love her the hardest, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't forget. It was like the words were drilled into her head.
Why her? she thought. She wanted an answer, why only her? Why was she the only one being treated this way? Was there something wrong with her? Was she that disgusting, to the point where her own parents didn't love her?
And of course she didn't want her siblings to be treated the way she was, but the question always lingered in the back of her mind, along with their harsh sayings.
Everything Mei'lu's parents have said or done, they were always in the back of her head, constantly haunting her.
When Mei'lu tried to seek comfort in others, they made her feel like they understood her, then told her to get over it, saying she had the rest of her life ahead of her.
That was the day Mei'lu realized that no one truly understood her, because no matter what, no one will ever see the same thing.
Because you can witness the same thing, at the same time, but you're both seeing it from different eyes. So what's the point of trying to get someone to understand?
Especially if you know that they never will.
ILU RIDING
"If you want to live here, you have to ride."
The lessons were, in fact, not over yet.
The group was stood in the shallow parts of the water whilst Ao'nung was informing them all of the ilu, and though the girl was tired, Mei'lu could not deny that she was excited for this lesson.
She loved ilu, of course hers, Ivä, being her favorite.
Deciding that splitting into groups would be easier, Tsireya starting picking out the groups. She, of course, chose Lo'ak which made Mei'lu roll her eyes. Ka'ey, Roxto, and Ao'nung stood off to the side, watching to see what was going to happen whilst Kiri, Tuk, and It'ey were sat in the sand playing.
"Her name is Ivä." Mei'lu spoke after seeing Neteyam eye her ilu curiously. The boy hummed in response, before letting out a grunt when lifting himself onto the creature.
The girl cleared her throat before speaking, "Remember, Ilu are calm creatures. They do not wish to harm, they will be gentle with you, so you will be gentle with them as well." The boy listened before nodding.
"Now make the tsaheylu." She spoke. "Feel the Ivä's emotions, become one with her. If you are in distress she can tell, so keep calm."
Neteyam nodded in understanding, and Mei'lu quickly showed him where to place his hands, "Hold on tight, and remember to keep calm."
"How do I-," the boy didn't get to finish his sentence before Mei'lu slapped her Ilu's back. The boys eyes widened when Ivä took off and Neteyam gasped in surprise when the ilu suddenly dove under water.
The animal moved fast against the water, making it hard hold on. Neteyam didn't want to make a fool of himself but ivä could sense his stress, making him unable to control her. He fully lost his grip and was thrown off the ilu, and as he came up coughing she quickly swam away, splashing him in the process.
He began to swim over to Mei'lu, who had her hand over her mouth, trying to lower her giggles. She heard loud laughs from behind her and turned to see everyone giggling. She stopped laughing when she saw the look on the poor boys face. He looked so embarrassed, and Mei'lu couldn't help but feel a little bad for him.
She gestured for him to come over to her, so he could try again and that he did, except when he positioned himself on the Ilu, she couldn't help but notice how wrong he was.
"You are positioned wrong." She spoke, making the boy look down at his position in confusion. "Your legs are too far up, and far too loose when riding. You aren't going to be able to hold on with just your arms."
"Okay got it." Neteyam muttered to himself before moving his legs to where he thought he should place them, before looking back at her for approval. Mei'lu simply nods her head, a signal to go.
The boy takes off, and Mei'lu couldn't help but get a sense of pride at how fast he learned.
Neteyam manages to stay on the Ilu the whole time, making Lo'ak's jaw drop before letting out a,"Bro what?!"
The older brother lets out a chuckle before cupping his hands around his mouth and shouting out to Lo'ak sarcastically, "don't worry bro you'll get it next time!"
Neteyam returns back to Mei'lu, who has her arms crossed and a smug look on her face, matching his. "Hey, i did pretty good right?" He smiled with his arms outstretched. "Hm, i suppose you did all right."
"I must be a great student huh?" He jokingly questioned, not caring too much about the girls lack of enthusiasm.
"Wrong. I'm just a good teacher." She spoke before walking out of the shallow surface and onto the sand, past the group of boys; who had happened to see the interaction, making Ka'ey snort at the boy's expression.
