Jong Residence

Yuri dashed down the stairs from their rooftop backroom to the main house kitchen. You were almost out of breath when you entered the opulent kitchen, where your mother was preparing the Jong household breakfast. You turned and looked at her with raised eyebrows when you felt a soft, quick kiss on the cheek. When you plopped down on one of the kitchen bar stools at the counter to catch your breath, she turned and looked at you with raised eyebrows.

As she looked at your agitated face, your mother cracked a small smile. She smirks, knowing how much you despise physical activity. You are too lazy to exercise. That's why she got you a bike to ride to school. Another form of torture.

"Good morning, Eomma," you mutter, your brow furrowed as you tighten your hair into a high ponytail. "How come you didn't wake me up? I could come down and assist you in finishing the 'royal' breakfast.

"Morning princess, I wanted you to sleep in," your mother smiled, but her eyes were weary " You have been so tired of your night school classes lately. I know the entrance exams are approaching, and you've been studying hard and you've been taking extra loads."

As you sigh and help her set up the household breakfast with the food in the warmers at the buffet table, she quickly prepares you a bowl of steaming rice porridge. Your mother awoke before 4 a.m. to begin preparing the daily breakfast. She made aromatic kimchi eggs, Korean Mushroom pancakes (her aunt's favorite), and Gyeran Jjim (a must for the daily breakfast table), and served them with dalgona coffee. You polish all the silver chopsticks and return to the nook where you eat your favorite dak juk porridge-chicken and rice porridge.

As you took a spoonful of your porridge, you smiled at your lovely, young mother. Nobody else in the family likes it, so your mother always got up early to make it for you. It fills you up and keeps you satisfied for the rest of the day.

"But, Eomma, I wanted to assist you. I heard Aunt Dallia was arguing with you last night. I just don't want you to overextend yourself, eomma. You should take it easy. You are still struggling from the illness." You were concerned by the exhaustion in her eyes. Her eyes were adorned with dark circles. She had a severe flu attack four days ago and still appeared under the weather. You wish she could just abandon all of her responsibilities and retire to bed. Perhaps you could have helped her with her household tasks until she recovers quickly.

"Don't be anxious, my princess. I'm going to be fine. Just eat well and catch the school bus; otherwise, you'll have to pedal to school today. I don't want you to be late for anything." She rubs you on the back. Turn around while she loads the dirty dishes into the dishwasher.

You shook your head, concernedly watching her slow, mechanical movements. It can be stressful for you to go to school knowing that your mother had to endure such verbal abuse from your aunt, Dallia. You wish you could get a part-time job and live with your mother after senior year. Your mother, on the other hand, is very strict about your education and wants you to focus on your final year. Because of all of your credits, you and your best friend will graduate early.

You suddenly heard footsteps coming down the stairs. You frown. It's your delightful, spoiled cousin, Jong Mi-cha.

She always seemed sluggish every morning. Does she even sleep? Or is she just on social media...taking staged selfies of herself? As your mother bowed and greeted her politely, you raised your eyes to her apparent sour demeanor. She barely reacts, nodding dismissively. You shook your head in disgust at her impolite behavior. What a jerk.

You smirk inwardly because one of the most popular guys at your school has probably rejected her advances yet again. Can't she see that she isn't all boys-type? Sorry to say, but Mi-Cha is a first-rate narcissistic brat. She believes she is superior to everyone else, including you, her maid.

"Good morning..." you said quietly. Her hair was marvelously loose over her shoulders. But she seemed upset so early in the morning. Her well-shaped brows creased.

She just stared at you with a bored expression and narrowed eyes, then quietly went to the buffet table and began to open the lids of the warmer dishes. As she looked down at the steaming food, her nose scrunched up in disgust.

"Aunt Binna! Kimchi mushroom pancakes and kimchi eggs again? Can't you at least include some variety in this house? What about a traditional English breakfast of bacon and sausages? " She groaned at your mother. Your dalgona coffee nearly choked you. (a sort of iced cappuccino) in reaction to her obvious lack of respect

"Your mother loves it...and my mother made it for her, not for you. Just eat what is placed before you," you stated, peeved. Your mother looked at you with wide eyes and shook her head, so you wouldn't start a fight or make a scene. They're already walking on thin glass in this household.

You inhaled deeply and swallowed any other snarky remark that came to mind. You'd had it with your cousin. She is ungrateful but sometimes mean-spirited.

She pursed her lips tightly and narrowed her beautiful eyes at your fresh, flawless beauty "Yuri, you watch it. And where have you hidden my PE uniform? I couldn't find it in my drawers...just...just go get my schoolbag in my bedroom before I tell my mother about your latest obnoxious behavior. Beggers can't be choosers, "She shot back, pointing to the stairs and dismissing you with pursed lips. Who peed in her porridge today?

You inhale sharply while internally counting to ten in order not to slap this obnoxious brat across the face.

"Oh, your uniform is still in the washing machine; my mother can't smell if you didn't put it in the laundry basket or not. Use one in your room next time...jeez "You softly mutter the last part through your teeth. Fortunately, your mother was cleaning the kitchen counters.

Your blood pressure began to rise. But you smiled tightly and stood up, rinsing your bowl and taking the stairs to retrieve your cousin's school bag with a dirty look behind your cousin's back. There have been numerous occasions when you wished to do something to her clothes, but doing so would land you and your mother in serious hot water. So you simply obey like a spineless fool. Your cousin only ate a few nibbles of her kimchi eggs and Gyeran Jjim begrudgingly. For a special school treat, you know she'll order sushi from a nearby luxury restaurant. She is very popular at school, and many people do favors for her...except for the one she idolizes the most.

You went up to her opulent and comfortable room to retrieve her schoolbag. You can't resist peering around the room until your gaze is drawn to her desk near the window. Her light blue backpack was on her pink flower patterned chair, her bag was adorned with glittery stickers and soft toys keyrings on the zippers and straps. Typical a girly girl. Every year she would redecorate her room to her peculiar taste. But one thing that you and your cousin have in common, you loved to read. She is mad about teen romances and you love to write stories. Your mom can't afford to buy all these expensive room decors for you.

You could see a glitzy pink open notebook on her desk, where she scribbled some nonsense. all over the pages. You wish she would just sit down and study instead of chasing after boys who aren't interested in her.

You just roll your eyes and take her bag from her chair, but your gaze is drawn to something in the notebook-a huge drawn heart with a name in it. Your breath caught in your throat as you stood silently peering at the beautiful drawn purple and pink heart with silvery arrows pointing outwards- de'picting the cute traits of the person she adores so much.

Names like- 'total babe, gorgeous, intelligent, awesome dancer, kind-hearted, kissable lips, unattainable, popular, and so on, and then she wrote her name in a big pink heart with glitter pencils and stars stickers- HIS FUTURE GIRLFRIEND. A sticker bow connected the heart to the heart of her dream guy.

You snort and mutter under your breath, "YOU WISH!" "You left it like that and wondered if she was aware that she had exposed her most private thoughts for all to see. The boy is indeed out of reach. He just doesn't date. Whether you are good-looking or not. All of the character traits she listed were true. He was all of those things and more.

You took a deep breath, knowing that your cousin isn't the only one who has a crush on the most talented street/hip-hop dancer at school. He is a member of the hip-hop group NEUTRONIX, which is a popular street-dancing crew. You might be able to tolerate hip-hop. But you're uninterested in the Kpop scene. You despise it.

You made your way down the stairs to where Mi-cha was lounging in the TV room, clutching her cell phone.

Her mother opted to skip breakfast and sleep in. Your uncle traveled to Tokyo for a week on business. You sigh despondently as your mother shakes her head, clearly disheartened by the wasted energy and food. She took out small containers and put the leftover or unfinished pancakes in a lunch box for you to take to school.

You handed Mi-cha her bag, and as she jumped up, she snatched her bag from your grasp and took her car keys from the table, and wordlessly walked out of the house to get into her new Kia Picanto. Her parents had given her a gift on her 18th birthday three months ago.

Your uncle wanted her to drive you to school with her, but she kept refusing to be seen with you. Even if you were stranded, you'd rather walk to school in the snow than take an uncomfortable experience with her and her equally obnoxious friends.

You enjoyed riding your bike to school on hot days. But nowadays, you'd rather take the bus. It allows you to reflect on your life and future, review your schoolwork, or just daydream about what ifs.

After helping to clean up the dining room and kitchen, you kissed your mother goodbye.

With a final wave to your smiling mom, you walk down the stairs in the cool air, holding your dark grey schoolbag and cell phone. Gi-yeon texted you to meet her at the bus stop.

You smile warmly as you were thinking about your friendship with your only pink-haired science nerd best friend.
